OUR DUMFRIES CAMPUS IS LOCATED AT THE CRICHTON, A HISTORIC 85-ACRE PARKLAND ESTATE ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF DUMFRIES. Our Dumfries Campus has state-of-the-art learning facilities for students and currently operates across four distinctive buildings; Dudgeon House, Browne House, Rutherford McCowan Building and Dumfries & Galloway College Building. Campus partners include University of Glasgow, Dumfries and Galloway College, the Open University, Scotland’s Rural College, The Crichton Foundation and the Crichton Institute. • The Crichton Library is located in the Dumfries and Galloway College Building and is equipped with wireless IT facilities, PC workstations and access to the Universitywide library and other online resources • The Student Link is located in The Crichton Library and brings together the services offered by Student Services, Student Administration Services and the Lifelong Learning Academy and provides advice on enrolment, careers, funding, job shop, counselling, disability support and parttime study • Our Corporate Marketing and Lifelong Learning teams are located in Dudgeon House and can provide more information about full and part-time study options at UWS in Dumfries • Sports facilities including games hall, gym and fitness studio are located in the College Building • Access to computer work stations and WiFi is available throughout the campus • A state-of-the-art clinical training skills unit for UWS nursing students is located In Browne House and the new UWS Recovery College is located in Dudgeon House • Free on-campus parking • An active Students’ Association also exists for students studying at the campus. With a population of 32,000, Dumfries forms the hub of Dumfries & Galloway, a region of rugged coastlines, sandy beaches and tranquil lochs. The town of Dumfries offers a good range of leisure, retail and entertainment venues. Outdoor sports and leisure pursuits are also well catered for including cycling, golf, mountain-biking, water sports, hillwalking and fishing. Just recently UWS has strengthened its partnership with Dumfries and Galloway Chamber of Commerce by becoming a Partner for Business to help increase engagement and knowledge exchange with local businesses. UWS has also been involved in sponsoring local award ceremonies such as the NHS Dumfries and Galloway Celebrating Excellence Awards, Dumfries & Galloway Life’s People of the Year Awards and Dumfries and Galloway’s Chamber of Commerce Business Awards.The 11th annual Rural Enterprise was recently held at Dumfries Campus and highlighted the latest research and policy practice in rural enterprise. It brought together policymakers, researchers and rural community leaders concerned with the latest developments and issues in rural entrepreneurship. The vitality of rural businesses for Scottish and UK economic development is hugely important and this Conference provided an opportunity to discuss new policy developments and support issues for rural businesses. 3

The University staff and students also help to support local charities at every available opportunity and recently entered a winning team in the annual Run4Health event which was held on the Crichton grounds in Dumfries. The University’s Dumfries Campus is also committed to working with regional schools to raise awareness of local study opportunities. In partnership with Dumfries and Galloway College, UWS recently organised a taster day for local school pupils considering a career working in Early Years. Each year, UWS also works in partnership with NHS Dumfries and Galloway to run a Nursing event for school pupils and in partnership with Dumfries and Galloway Council and other agencies, organises an event for prospective students considering a career in Social Work. Over the last four years, senior pupils have been given the opportunity to participate in the annual UWS Enterprise Challenge which encourages school teams to compete for the enterprise award. This brings together both the academic and business communities to support pupils in their challenge to develop and promote sustainable business ideas. With ten schools now participating each year and a growing level of support from businesses and the local media this event is set to remain a popular event which we hope will inspire future entrepreneurs. The Dumfries Campus Student Awards event is now in its 5th year and recognises our local students for their outstanding achievements, with both academic and practice awards presented to students studying across all subject areas at the University. The event also continues to attract support and sponsorship from a range of our local partners, including The Crichton Foundation, who also provide financial support to students and initiatives throughout the year. As a result of these strong regional partnerships UWS attracts students straight from school as well as a large number of students building on their college qualifications or professional experience from the workplace. Last year UWS hosted two graduation ceremonies in Dumfries to accommodate the growth in academic provision and to celebrate our first students graduating with degrees in Social Work and Applied Enterprise. UWS is also key to CPD provision in the region, particularly for NHS Dumfries and Galloway.

INFORMATION & ADVICE THERE’S PLENTY OF SUPPORT TO PREPARE YOU FOR YOUR TIME AT UWS - WHETHER YOU’RE A SCHOOL LEAVER, ADULT RETURNER OR COLLEGE STUDENT. SCHOOL TO UNIVERSITY If you’re preparing to make decisions about life after school, you have a number of choices when it comes to continuing your studies. If you have the relevant entry qualifications it is possible to apply to go straight to university (and then of course, you have to make decisions about what course, what university, what campus and when). Depending on your course choice and qualifications, it is possible to study towards a degree on a full or part-time basis with UWS and a number of access courses and summer schools also exist for students who want to boost their entry qualifications or for those who want help making course, university and campus choices. It is also possible to study at college before progressing to university. Students are advised to attend open days and information sessions to help them make informed choices about their future studies and to seek advice about fees and funding before committing to a course. ADULTS RETURNING TO STUDY If you’re preparing to return to education later in life, UWS can offer a range of flexible study options to help you take the first step. Whether you work full or part-time, and/or have family commitments and are interested in considering full or part-time study, UWS can offer advice and guidance on introductory courses, access courses or more advanced courses to suit your skills, qualifications, experience, commitments, budget and goals. A number of funding initiatives are available to help towards the cost of your studies. COLLEGE TO UNIVERSITY If you’ve already gained a college qualification, or are currently working towards one, you can often gain entry to the first year of a UWS degree, or in some cases advanced entry to second or third year of a related UWS degree. College can often ease the transition from school to university and can offer an alternative access route to university for adults returning to education. We have a range of partnership arrangements with colleges in Scotland, including Dumfries and Galloway College, which is located adjacent to the University campus. In Dumfries and Galloway a number of progression opportunities exist for local students to progress from college to UWS in a variety of subject areas including business, enterprise, computing, education, adult nursing, mental health nursing and social work. EMPLOYERS AND BUSINESSES UWS can help you support the personal development of your employees. In this guide you will find useful information about a wide range of part-time (day, evening and online) study opportunities available at our Dumfries Campus – this includes details of modules that can be studied on an individual basis and details of degree programmes that can be studied on a flexible modular basis around work and family commitments. Study plans can be created for individuals and can be tailored to suit your employee and your business needs – most modules require class attendance for either half a day (morning or afternoon) or one evening a week for around 12 weeks starting in either September, February or June each year. A range of funding initiatives is also available and a funding advisor can provide you or your employee(s) with advice on support available. (See pages 27-28 for details). UWS works in partnership with both public and private sector organisations to deliver training courses for senior executives, managers and their employees. Where there is sufficient demand, UWS can also tailor training courses to suit the needs of your business including delivery at a time and place to suit you. We are happy to discuss any business or training requirement you have. Please contact us and we can arrange a campus visit or come along to your place of work. UWS also has an Employability Link service which includes a Job Shop vacancy service for students and graduates looking for full and part-time employment and placement opportunities. THIS DEGREE – WHICH IS AVAILABLE ON A FULL OR PART-TIME BASIS – IS ALL ENCOMPASSING AND OFFERS AN EXCELLENT GROUNDING IN THE BUSINESS AND ENTERPRISE SKILLS VALUED BY EMPLOYERS. WITH A FLEXIBLE CORE FRAMEWORK, IT BUILDS ON EXISTING PROVISION FROM OUR BUSINESS SCHOOL. It offers a broad-based, integrated perspective on business life and as you move through the degree your perspective will change from an operational level to a strategic one. In addition to lectures and tutorials, there are group based activities in the programme, along with workshops and case study reviews. Other key elements of this course are: • learning in (and from) the workplace • talks from, and visits to, local and national employers • varied assessment formats, including examinations, coursework, presentations, case studies, portfolio building • a strong basis for further study CAREER PROSPECTS This degree has been developed in conjunction with major UK employers. EARLY CHILDHOOD IS A CRUCIAL STAGE IN A CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT. THIS REWARDING DEGREE OFFERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN SUPPORTING CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES IN A VARIETY OF ENVIRONMENTS. This course, which is informed by developments in the childcare sector, has been designed to deepen understanding of a variety of issues related to childhood and services for children and their families. It will give students the opportunity to build on their previous qualifications, entering at Year 2, to upgrade to a degree level qualification through two years of ‘full-time’ study. Students develop their existing skills and knowledge, consider the values that underpin work in children’s services and appreciate the importance of professionals from differing disciplines working in partnership. The course aims to enable students to promote children’s learning effectively and to develop the ability to work as a reflective practitioner. It develops students’ knowledge and skills and addresses management issues in childcare settings. Students with a disability, medical condition or Specific Learning Difficulties. If you have a disability, medical condition, or Specific Learning Difficulty which may impact on your course, you are advised to contact one of the Disability Advisers prior to commencement of your studies. Full-time Nursing students are exempt from course tuition fees and eligible for a non means-tested bursary (personal allowance) and, where applicable, a means-tested dependant’s allowance administered through the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). At present, current levels of personal allowance for all students are £6,578 per annum. *The dependant’s allowance is income assessed and is intended to support students’ dependants.

As demand for many of the part-time modules and professional qualifications is high, early application is advised. Finance - Funding your studies For session 2013/2014 Part Time student module fees are as follows: 20 Credit Undergraduate modules - £305 20 Credit Postgraduate modules - £555 A range of funding initiatives are available which may help you meet the costs of part time study: SAAS Part Time Fee Grant Part Time Students with an income of £25,000 a year or less may qualify for a Part Time Fee Grant from the Student Awards Agency for Scotland. From session 2013/2014 SAAS will link the level of the Part Time Fee Grant available to the number of credits you study. This means students can be awarded support in excess of the previous £500 limit. Applicants must be taking at least 40 credits of study within the academic year to access this funding. Skills Development Scotland Individual Learning Account (ILA £200) Skills Development Scotland Individual Learning Accounts are a Scottish Government scheme that can provide you with up to £200 towards the cost of your studies with the University. You can apply for this funding if you have an Income of £22,000 or less. If you intend to use an ILA account to fund or part fund your studies you must have this funding in place and supply us with your account number prior to the start of your course.
