The IDSA Student Chapter at SFSU is a design student organization that stimulates activity and dialog commonly experienced in the professional industrial design environment. It is affiliated with the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), a national nonprofit organization for professionals who design products, instruments, equipment, furniture, transportation, toy, exhibits, packaging, and environments. Across the nation, IDSA student chapters facilitate student educational concerns and interests and career opportunities in the industrial design profession. Our chapter provides a responsive student network and resource that maintains representation with the professional IDSA organization and the professional design communities-at-large in the Bay Area and the U.S. Our student chapter, in conjunction with the San Francisco professional chapter, sponsors student design exhibits, organizes open houses of design offices in the Bay Area and sponsors student and professional portfolio workshops. It also promotes presentations from professionals to students as well as facilitating internships and career employment.

Currently a founding member of the Design and Industry Alumni Association Steering Committee, Linda Lee graduated with a DAI Masters in Multimedia Design and a B.A. in Fine Art Photography at San Francisco State University in 1993. She began her impressive career as an industrial design intern for the Quality Assurance Department at Kaleida Labs. Inc. (a joint venture of IBM and Apple), later working as media asset manager at McGraw-Hill, then as senior product analyst at Creative Wonders (a joint venture of ElectronicArts/Capital Cities,ABC). As asset coordinator at Studio Archetype, Lee creates, organizes and maintains graphic assets and digital files for complex interactive projects, working closely with designers in creating graphic art during the implementation phase of projects. She also manages the archiving of all studio work. Prior to joining Studio Archetype, Lee managed and operated her own multifaceted production studio, specializing in photography and traditional graphic design. Her photography repertoire ranges from copy work of client paintings and architectural models to weddings, portraits and nudes. Linda enjoys scuba diving, snow skiing, sculling, and volleyball in her spare time.

Michael Dean Robertson received both a B.A. and an M.A. from DAI. Selected this spring as College of Alameda’s “Teacher of the Year,” he says he did not arrive here alone, thanking the department, especially Dr. John Dierke, for all the support and encouragement he received. He currently is responsible for the design and delivery of curriculum for alternative fuel courses for three Bay Area Community Colleges and coordinates training for instructors from various community colleges in California developing curricula in alternative fuel vehicles. He facilitates communications between industry and the colleges, and sponsors and coordinates programs to bring the newest changes in industry to the classroom. At DAI, Michael gives seminars for graduate students and is a technology resource for industry through support for local trainers and past students. A DAI internship with Richardson and the GMC Truck Center is in the planning stage. He is also a member of DAI’s Epsilon Pi Tau, Beta Beta Chapter. In 1997 Michael received the American Vietnam League (AVL) Teacher of the Year award for designing and delivering a program that targets at-risk Vietnamese women who want to enter the trades. Other awards in education include the 1997 ED Net Award for Outstanding Business Partnership and the 1997 ATT Special Recognition Award for the CNG MARTA Training at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
