Just look at me in that ridiculous pink hat. ^^ I was out of control that night. I left that thing on for a full minute and a half before almost clawing my eyes out to get it off. I don’t have hands, you know. It’s hard to take a hat off without hands. First world problems, I guess. Sometimes you just gotta do things to get a laugh, though. Life gets way too blah blah boring. The People need to laugh more and worry about where we poo or what we chew less. Look at me .... I can fit six tennis balls in my mouth .... look over here .... I’m making my eyes bug out like a ... bug with really bulgy eyes ... look at me pooping in a corner on the carpet! All these goofy things we do don’t always make the People giggle, but we try. So, this issue is dedicated to the Goofus in all of us. Brightening the Peoples’ day, yes, is something we can do with our mere presence when they come through the door, but think about going the extra mile and let them find you waiting for them on top of the table one time ... or sleeping on your back, smack in the middle of the floor, all legs in the air ...or maybe try dragging something too large to fit through the doggy door through the doggy door? There comes a time in every Cocker Spaniel mix’s life when they wake up, look in the mirror, and just don’t recongize themselves anymore. That day of reckoning for me wasn’t so much a spiritual “who am I, what have I done with my life,” as it was 100 percent a “Why do I look like a jumbo golden cotton ball?” and “Why is it so freaky hot in here all the time?” I didn’t recognize myself and it felt like the bowels of H...E...double rawhide sticks because I was carrying around about sixty extra pounds of fur. Some Huskies or Poodle-types can pull off this trend, but it didn’t suit me. It was time, beyond time, actually, to take action.

When I finally arrived at Fluffy Cuts, I was greeted by the most lovely people and a nervous little white girl with a hairless heiny. A’ndrea and Brian were the People and they would be at my service today. (The hairless heiny belonged to Ember, who A’ndrea rescued from a kill shelter and is giving love and helping her get her hair back.) Brian gave me a big hug and told me I was beautiful... which made me feel good, but who knows... maybe he just has a thing for overly-fluffy stuff. I didn’t feel beautiful. A’ndrea ran her fingers through my hair (he he he...tickles!) and assessed my skin. She told Brian I could go with a shampoo for “normal” skin. (Normal! Me?)
I had heard great Driver! Get me to Fluffy Cuts...STAT. things about a new A’ndrea is helping grow hairs salon at the beach — Fluffy back on foster Cuts. That super handsome dog Ember (don’t tell him I said that. No... tell him! No... don’t. Wait... Don’t.) lab around the corner on Third Street told me they have gentle hands and kind hearts. Sweet! I really love those things. I had the maid call and we got an appointment the very next day! I couldn’t wait! I was so.... hot... (temperature-wise, not sexy-wise). Appointment time! I went to sitstay in the car. I never drive myself to the salon, I have a driver. (For someone on my payroll, she certainly seems to be on her own schedule.) 8 | Support local family-run businesses!
Into the baaaaawth we (I) went! Warm water trickled all over my fuzzy body. I was unsure I would like it at first, but once Brian started massaging me with suds, getting in all crevices and tickling my arm pits... ohhhh we laughed and laughed. I started feeling better and reenergized already. It smelled just divine.
Brian turned off the water (and yah... I’m aware I looked like a melting candle with eyeballs), “We’re going to take care of you,” he reassured me as he wrapped me in a cozy towel and placed me on the blow dry table. Comes to find out this is a special high-powered blow
dryer that can really help get that undercoat outta there — even for those of you who don’t get your hair cut, a professional bath and blow dry is great for cutting down on summertime shedding! Fur started flying. I wasn’t completely sure what I had gotten myself into, but Brian looked into my This is really eyes and embarrassing, kept telling you know that, me all was man? going to be OK. It was, of course. A’ndrea was up next to take care of that embarrassing extra floof. She didn’t look the least intimidated. But IIIIIII was intimidated when she pulled out a multitude of sharp, shiny, pokey items, which I could only assume she was going to use on me. I decided I could get used to being a walking, talking Furby. Thanks guys for the awesome bath! See you next time! I’m good. Ah..... no. That’s not where this little story ends. My driver wouldn’t let me leave until we did what we came here for. So, A’ndrea gently and expertly used those tools to expose a beauty that I didn’t know was possible! She cleaned my ears, clipped my nails, shaved my feets and pits. She was able to make a whole other dog from the hair she got off me. (We’ll call him Bob Barklie and let him sleep under the bed.) A’ndrea used to be a vet tech, so she knows a lot about a lot and has even alerted other drivers to take their salon

It’s really Bob Barklie neat they all get to work together as a family. They provide amazing service because it’s something they really, really care about. A’ndrea loves dogs so much she says she will they will try to groom any dog ... no matter the breed or temperment. They even do cats! Yech. A’ndrea and Brian made me feel like a million bones, and I spent almost NO time in a cage! (They don’t like to put dogs in cages.) I told my driver not to forget to tip for the great service! When I checked out, they gave me a super cute bandana and a report card! My driver was quite proud. So glad I stuck around. Can’t wait to see what he thinks over on Third. A month ago
I succumbed to cheeseburgers and a slip lead. The next thing I knew this small smelly woman had her arms around me and was lifting me up into her car while whispering “please don’t bite me, please don’t bite me,” and inside I was thinking “please don’t hurt me, please don’t hurt me.” So began our highly dysfunctional — but somehow functioning — relationship. I’m just your average stray. According to my vet paperwork I am a one-year-old pit bull. I was starving (I didn’t need the vet to tell me that) and my iron was so low it is a wonder I was even able to stand up anymore. I have scars on my neck and body. Foster Mom — or FM as I like to call her
nutrition at that point. So to those people — I get that you didn’t know me. I understand that maybe you didn’t want a dog who looked like me in your car or maybe you had plans and didn’t have time. Maybe you didn’t know what to do. But whatever the reason you had for not helping me, you were wrong! I just want you to know that not only did you miss out on meeting me, but you missed out on an experience that would have changed you in a really good way. I needed help so badly and you looked away. It is hard to justify that, but we can change that for the next time you see someone who needs help!
Here Comes the
BOOMer — thinks I was one of the untold numbers of dogs that are chained in yards and forgotten. She’s probably right, but thus far I’ve refused to tell her my story because it is fun to watch her speculate; I like to keep her busy. The day I was found, I was in an office/industrial park off Shad Road in Mandarin. A lot of people saw me that day and people even saw FM trying to get me. I’m going to try really hard not to whine about all that, but I have to say that it hurt when people saw me and turned away. My feet were burnt from walking on the hot street and I had open wounds on my body. I didn’t even have fleas anymore because I had almost no hair and my blood wasn’t even offering them I was super hungry. It’s hard to find something to eat on the streets if you don’t have any money.

It has been a month and I have put on 20 lbs! I
have Facebook page and my own lots of fans and friends. I have slowly come to enjoy toys, other dogs, and someone kissing me on the head. My iron is still low and I have heartworms in my body, but FM has promised me that things are going to keep getting better. I’m on board except for that “neuter” bit; that sounds like a step in the wrong direction if you ask me. FM says she thinks she has found a very special person for me to be my RM, not just FM! Maybe the best really is to come.

I hope that by telling my story, you will choose not to look away from the next Boomer you see. Even if you aren’t ready to care for an animal like me, you can at least offer a lift to an area shelter. If you do pick up an animal and take him home, please consider that you could have found a long lost pet and you might be the link to a joyous reunion. FM thinks people don’t I am learning how to be part of look long enough for owners; she’s a family. Look at my belly! really opinionated about a lot of stuff so be grateful I’m the one telling my story, or else there wouldn’t be any room here for my photos!

What to do if your pet is Lost... • Start looking immediately. • Search your OWN home & property to make sure he’s not just hiding. • search your neighborhood. Bring your pet’0s favorite things with you, a “squeaky” toy or favorite treats and rattle them loudly while calling your pet’s name. It’s also important to stop regularly, be quiet, and listen to see if your pet is making any noise. • Post signs at intersections. Include the breed of dog (or cat), sex, age, weight, and color, use bright colored paper for higher visibility. Give copies of your flier to people that walk their dogs in the area... and even the postman! • Go To all the local shelters. Calling the animal control department or shelter on the phone is not very effective. You should go to the shelters at least every other day. • Use the power of scent. Place a recently worn article of clothing (at least a day... the stinkier the better) belonging to a family member or the lost pet’s unwashed bedding in your yard or outside your front door where the breeze can carry the scent. Familiar scents can bring them home. Cats will respond to an open can of tuna fish or litter box also. • contact veterinary clinics both in your area and surrounding areas. • Use social media! Facebook is amazing for spreading the word. • Microchips. JULINGTON CREEK ANIMAL WALK Hey everybody! It’s Davi! Looking for a cool place to play on a hot summer day? Check out Julington Creek Animal Walk! I went last week and didn’t ever want to leave. Once through the gate, I was freeeeeee... with the wind in my ears & no leash around my neck ( UNLEASH! ). I ran laps around the trail, picking up speed as I tracked a new scent & marking my visit at every turn. Everyone needs to know DAVI was HERE (and there)! I felt very safe — there is a tall fence enclosing the entire park. I could do whatever I wanted... it feels SO GOOD to be able to do that once & awhile! I stopped between chasing a squirrel & burrowing under a bush to lap a drink from one of the many water bowls all around the park. ( This is thristy work I was doing here, people. ) “Mutt mitts” are everywhere, too, for picking up after me...which I don’t do, but “someone” does. I was excited to be joined by my good friend Bismark. He’s a LONG-haired dachshund ( I hope that doesn’t keep him from getting a job.) We charged into the meadow and wrestled in the wet grass, making our bellies a yummy muddy mess, ( sorry not sorry, mom ). We caught our breath & dug a hole for a shady spot to rest before exploring the trail one more time.

Next we tackled the small hill leading to a cool playground with ramps to run, obstacles to leap, & a gazebo to circle. The cedar scent of the mulch mounds smelled wonderful. We raced to the top & dug through it, each of us taking a wood chip piece in our mouths as we headed to the pool to cool our paws. ( I’m sure we looked just adorable. ) So much to do...luckily we had allll day to do it! The pool was shallow & pretty wet. I swam laps while Bismark fetched a stick. We jumped out and rolled on the ground in bliss. Dirty & tired, our moms took us to the bathing station for a quick clean up before heading home. I slept so GREAT! It really was the best day ever. Heart I have a confession.
Well, it’s not a confession so much as a declaration. A declaration to whom, I’m not really sure, as everyone who’s ever known me knows this one very specific thing about me. But I’m going to announce it here anyway. Because you look like nice people that I can trust. Can I trust you? I think I can. So, here goes: I. Love. Dogs. I love dogs.
In the past six months I’ve learned more about dogs than I ever thought possible (thanks Cesar 911)! I’ve learned what it means to have a best friend who can’t talk (but the “personality” my boyfriend gives her suits her just fine). I’ve learned that Darcy views

people as giant lollipops. I’ve learned what it’s Melissa Heyboer like to have a pet that shares a similar eating style (i.e. ALL THE FOOD, ALL THE TIME. WAIT, NO, I DIDN’T MEAN BROCCOLI, I WANT THE STEAK PLEASE). I learned But I’m no expert. I’m not that you CAN train a a veterinarian or an animal dog to understand the behaviorist. I didn’t grow importance of sleeping up surrounded by dogs and in on the weekends (it’s I will never claim to be overly usually me dragging her knowledgeable about woman’s out of bed). understandably frustrated by the big, giant bowl of water when it tries to swallow her instead (and tastes yucky). I’ve learned that when I’m sad she makes me feel better. That when I’m bored she’s willing to take me on a walk. And that when newly washed sheets hit the bed, she’s always obliged to be the first to break them in. And she never complains about it. She’s like the Mother Teresa of dogs. She’d give you the hair off her back if you were going bald. And you’d want it. No, really, she has lovely hair. Short, but soft. Naturally highlighted with gorgeous varying colors of brown and white. I know plenty of men who would kill for Darcy’s hair. Well, any hair I presume, but that’s not the point. The point is, I’ve learned a lot. But nothing as important as learning that most of the time, dogs are only as good as their owners let them be. Darcy has always been kindhearted. We didn’t have to teach her that. You can tell she loves people, she loves being outside, she loves doing dog things. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t require guidance. With the help of my boyfriend, we’ve worked
extremely hard over the last half year to not just break her of certain habits, but train her to understand that she is the dog and that we are the humans and that humans trump dogs in authority. I want her to feel loved, and I want to spoil her. But I don’t want her to own me. So many pet owners think that dog ownership is a walk in the park (DOG PUN)! It’s not. It’s hard. And it takes a seemingly endless amount of patience and diligence. But holy cow is it worth it. It’s worth every early morning bathroom run, every holey sock, every scratch on my body left from her bayonet-like nails. She is worth it because she is worthy. Worthy of direction. Worthy of my time. Worthy of support. Worthy of a good life. Worthy. Not just because she is mine. Or because I am hers. But because she’s a dog. You see: I. Love. Dogs. I love dogs. I love them. All of them.

Her fianceé, Jon, had brought home a Staffordshire Terrier mix puppy to cheer her up after the couple suffered a overwhelming personal loss. “It turns out Bella saved me from my sadness — and she inspired me to help,” Kymberly says. “Because of the wonderful dog she is, I learned more about how pit bull-type dogs are mistreated, overbred, and get a horrible rap. I decided I owed these dogs the same support she gave me when I needed her most, so I got involved with rescue. In February of 2014, my affinity for these dogs (and knowing the heartbreaking number of them that die in shelters every day) drove me to start PitStop Pit Bull Rescue Transport. I wanted people to have a resource willing to step up and get these dogs to safety. Although pitties are my favorite, we do not discriminate. If there is an animal in need and we can help ... we absolutely will. PitStop has one primary goal — to help save lives.”

In their first year, PitStop took on the challenge of the Clay County Extreme Shelter Makeover Project. The Clay County Shelter is located in Green Cove Springs, Fla. It’s rural and overlooked. Volunteers cleaned and painted the entire facility, landscaped, added signage, and even installed a new fenced play yard for the dogs. The makeover took several weeks of planning, two full weekends, and 80 wonderful volunteers to complete! This project was a catalyst for community involvement and future shelter recognition. After several months of being on the road transporting dogs, their next program was realized. Toys for Transport started as a holiday
toy drive for shelter animals in October 2014. It has continued to grow through the generous donations of PitStop supporters. This program focuses on providing shelter animals “goodie bags” filled with collars, leashes, treats, and toys when they are on transport. PitStop is able to provide these items to rescues, fosters and forever families who genuinely appreciate them often bringing lots of surprised looks, laughter, and “thank yous!” PitStop Pit Bull Rescue Transport has two donation locations: Pet Supermarket (Jax Beach) and Earth Pets (Mandarin). The year 2015 has brought new community involvement, including
volunteering with other organizations, helping with adoption events, donation drives for other rural shelters needing assistance, and, most recently, helping a homeless military vet keep her pets by providing boarding and vetting assistance. “Our success is your success. We can’t continue to do the things we love to do without community support and involvement,” says Kymberly. I personally cannot imagine life without a dog; there is no creature more
loyal, loving, and forgiving on this planet. But, as a pet professional, I can tell you not everyone should get a dog. Bringing a dog into your home and life, whether it be a puppy or full grown, is something that should be thought out and planned (if possible). You will be responsible for another living creature’s well-being, both physically and mentally — and that’s not always going to be easy. It’s a commitment that lasts the lifetime of the dog. You must be prepared to take care

of an animal during good times and bad. You will watch them age. They would never abandon you if you get a little gray and you need to be there for them when they need you, too. As with all animals, dogs deserve to be loved, respected, and have the best quality of life for as long as possible. Set yourself up for success by not making a rash decision, just because you fall for those puppy eyes or soft ears! There is much, much more to sharing your life with a dog. Explore what age and type of dog might best suit your lifestyle before you bring a dog home. If you are active, you’ll probably do well with an active dog. If you’re not very active, consider a dog that is not high energy. Common sense! The amount of time you will be able to spend with a dog is also something to consider. It’s cruel to get a dog that you don’t have energy or time to care for. Before getting a puppy, realize that a little furball of joy is a full-time job that, if not properly taken care of, can wreak havoc on your home (and occasionally your sanity/patience). Potty training is something that takes diligence and mindfulness, but it is not that difficult if you truly put in the time and effort. My 18-month-old lab mix has only had one accident in the house. I made sure to have arrangements for him to get out to potty if I knew I would be gone for more than four hours. A puppy simply cannot “hold it” for as long as a grown dog and should never be punished for an accident. The same

goes for a senior dog, a dog with medical issues, or an adopted dog that has never experienced living in a home. Dogs don’t want to make a mess in the house, but they are not machines — they have needs. They need you to consistently and patiently show them what you want them to do. Puppyhood may last past the age of three years old, so be ready to have a happy ball of energy bouncing around for a few years. Puppies have (the arforementioned) energy, shorter attention spans, and a knack for finding trouble. They will need enough exercise, attention, and rules. These things are crucial for a happy and healthy dog. If you are not able to exercise your dog, have a friend or a professional do so. Puppies and some grown dogs love to chew; they can be masters of mayhem! Sometimes a kennel or a crate is a wonderful tool, it helps with potty training but

If you are leaning toward buying a puppy or dog rather than adopting, please do your research. Do not buy a puppy from a pet store or backyard breeder. By backyard breeder, I mean people who are breeding dogs to better their wallet rather than to better the breed. A good breeder will have many questions for you and forms to fill out, as well as asking for references. They will put you through the ringer to get one of their dogs because they are passionate about the breed and want to be certain they are placing a puppy in the right home. Before buying, look into rescue and adoption — many wonderful puppies and dogs end up in shelters because people did not take the time to consider if they were ready for a dog. Learning to Trust with the help of
TTouch Doryan Cawyer, CCMT
I first met Jackie when Kate and Bob
Moore contacted me about massaging their dog, Emme, who sufferd a torn cranial cruciate ligament. Jackie, an adorable six-year-old rat terrier surrendered to the Miami-Dade shelter as an aggressive dog, was rescued by Bob and Kate who foster her for New Rattitude Rat Terrier Rescue. Jackie met me at the door along with Emme and their other housemate Eli, but she was not as eager for my attention as the other dogs. While she was interested, she didn’t seek out and welcome petting as did the other two dogs. Jackie became a little more comfortable with me each time I returned for Emme’s massages and soon gave me permission to pet her. I was very happy to help Emme and see the positive effects of massage for her, but I kept thinking about Jackie, too. I knew that massage could ease some of her anxiety and help her learn to relax, but I didn’t think she was ready yet for that kind of touch. I had attended a TTouch (pronounced Tee-Touch) workshop several months ago and knew that some of the techniques I’d learned would be perfect for Jackie. I shared with Bob and Kate what I had learned in the workshop and how I thought that particular method of touch could benefit Jackie. They were open-minded and excited about anything that could help this sweet little girl learn to relax and trust humans again.
What is TTouch? TTouch, or Tellington Touch, is an amazingly humane and respectful way of working with animals. It utilizes a system of gentle bodywork and non-habitual movement exercises to positively influence behavior and well-being in animals, including humans. helpful in cases of extreme fear and shyness, excessive barking and chewing, aggressive behavior, problems with aging, and many other common issues. The TTouch method has three components: bodywork, ground work, and tools. So far, I’ve incorporated bodywork and tools into Jackie’s sessions in the form of TTouches and body wraps. We will add the ground work once she’s ready. Bodywork. There are three types of touch within the TTouch method: circular, strokes, and lifts. The foundation of TTouch bodywork is circular movements done in one and a quarter revolutions at varying tempos and pressures. My first session with Jackie consisted of very light TTouches anywhere she would allow along with lots of positive reinforcement in the form of verbal praise and treats. I let Jackie tell me when she’d had enough and we ended the session positively. It is very important to me that Jackie knows her wishes are respected in regards to our sessions. I feel this is crucial in helping her regain her trust in humans. Jackie has since progressed from allowing only the lightest and quickest of TTouches to now allowing massage strokes over most of her body! Tools. As she became more comfortable with touch, I introduced the body wrap to Jackie. This was done with an abundance of verbal praise and gold-standard treats. I monitored her reaction closely to ensure she wasn’t overwhelmed by the new experience. We left the wrap on for only 30 seconds to a minute before removing it, again making sure we ended the session on a good note. Body wraps produce an effect similar to antianxiety shirts for dogs, such as the ThunderShirt. The goal with Jackie’s body wraps is to enhance her sense of her own body and make her more
confident in her movements and behavior. I could see how tense Jackie was during our first session just by observing how she moved her body and how she held her tail very stiff and curled over her back. Now during our sessions, Jackie’s body is more relaxed and her tail is soft and lowered. Once she was comfortable with the body wrap, I introduced the head wrap. The purpose of the head wrap with Jackie is to help her feel focused and calm while also reducing her reactivity to stimuli, such as loud noises. I knew the head wraps were working when we heard Emme and Eli barking at something in the other room but Jackie didn’t join in the barking. She was alert and interested in what was going on in the other room, but she didn’t overreact by barking at the unknown as she had in previous sessions. The head wraps have also allowed Jackie to feel more comfortable with light TTouches on her head and face, especially around the left eye, which doesn’t produce tears. Her vision is probably not fully functional in that eye, so my goal is to help her feel more secure when things occur in that faulty left field of vision.
Jackie has made huge strides since beginning our sessions — I couldn’t be happier with her progress! She now greets me excitedly when I arrive and jumps up to kiss me when I kneel down to pet her. She eagerly awaits as I set up my massage table, and she frequently scratches at the door during Emme’s session as Emme always goes first (“Is it my turn yet?”). I’ve taught Bob and Kate how to practice the TTouches and body wraps on Jackie between our sessions. They recently had family stay with them for a week and reported that Jackie was much more receptive to being petted than she had been in the past. She also seems to enjoy relaxing with them on the couch now more than she did just a few months ago. Jackie is a sweet and lovable little girl, and she is learning that it’s OK to relax and trust again. She didn’t have the greatest experience with humans before Bob and Kate took her in, but together we are helping her realize that there are good humans who want to give her the love she deserves. Loki’s Story LOKI is a 6-year-old rescued Siberian Husky mix who was diagnosed with pneumothorax, a lifethreatening condition that required emergency surgery to save Loki’s life. Loki was having difficulty breathing and his dad was frantic to save his life. Sadly, Loki’s dad had been to several doctors who told him the cost of the surgery would be $8,000 and Loki’s dad couldn’t afford it.
