Mr and Mrs an interview with the future

What was your first impression?

G: My first impression of him was how completely comfortable I felt with him. We immediately hit it off and we talked about anything and everything. It felt like we had been friends for years. J: She was walking through a crowd and spotted me, but pretended not to notice. I thought she was gorgeous (of course) but it made me smile the way she tried to play it cool.

What did you do on your first date? G: We had met up at a mall in Salt Lake City called City Creek. He bought me dinner and we walked around the mall and Temple Square. We just talked and laughed the whole time. I remember my cheeks hurt from smiling so much. J: We walked around downtown SLC and talked for hours. We couldn’t stop talking and laughing. We kept walking in circles even though it was January and I forgot to wear a coat that was heavy enough. 6

Who initiated the first kiss?

J: I did! She almost turned me down too. G: Jon. We had an amazing date at Thanksgiving Point. We had walked around the grounds, seen the museums, took a wagon ride and saw a movie all in one day. After the movie, we walked to my car and I offered to drive him to his car. After we parked, he looked over at me and said “I really want to kiss you right now”. I felt like that would be so awkward in my tiny car with a big console in between us. So I said “Mmm, maybe next time?” and he said “Okay” and immediately got out of the car. I felt so bad that I ran out of my car and yelled, “Wait!” and went right up to him and kissed him.

Who was the first to say I love you? G: Well, accidently? Me. For real? Him. I told I wanted the first time we said it to be very romantic and memorable. We had joked about saying I love you for a few weeks before he said it.. He would say things like

“Olive Juice” and “I love U...2 the band” just to mess with me. I would try and trick him too, but ended up just saying “I love youu.. wait no!”. And then there was one time we were at Old Navy and he offered to buy me a pair of pants and it just slipped out! Not very romantic. J: This was me again. She had talked about finding the “right moment” and we found it while the sun was setting over Utah Lake.

What’s the most interesting or surprising thing you’ve learned about each other since you’ve been together? G: I think just how creative he is. He loves to write, play instruments, and draw. He always seems so logical and doesn’t boast about it so I don’t see his creative side very often, but when I do I’m always surprised by his talent. J: She has this crazy secret knowledge of European art. She seriously never talks about it but it’s there. She is also really good at building IKEA furniture (she’s really just a dream woman).

What is one of your favorite memories together? G: We have so many good times, but I think my favorite was my undergrad graduation day. My whole family came into town for my graduation. It was a total whirlwind of a day with graduation and parties. Jon and I went to the park to save a pavilion for my family while they went to the grocery store. So Jon and I found a nice bench in the park looking towards a little creek and I put my head on his shoulder. I just remember it was just a quiet and romantic moment during a really fun, exciting day. J: We have been to two Disney parks together so it’s hard to beat pretty much all of the memories from those trips. Favorite though might have to be riding horses in the desert down by Zion. Or possibly spending the 4th of July in Hannibal, MO touring Mark Twain’s hometown. No wait, it was

definitely going to the Lincoln Museum and tomb in Illinois. There’s really just too many favorites.

What do you love most about each other? G: There honestly are so many things I love about Jon. I just love how he would move heaven and earth to make me happy. And I truly want to make him happy too! I feel so safe with him and I know that we are a team. J: I always tell people that if you can be with a woman who is smarter than you and better looking than you like I am, go for it. But seriously; it’s that she makes me better in a thousand little ways every single day.

When did you know you’d met the one? G: I think I had known for awhile but there was one specific moment I remember thinking he was the one. It was the Christmas season and we were sitting in the living room in front of the Christmas tree. He was reading and I was leaning on him and about to take a nap. It was so cozy and I knew I wanted my life to have moments just like that with him. J: I’d say date 4; touring the dinosaur museum at Thanksgiving Point. Holding her hand while talking and laughing just felt right. I knew I could do that forever.

What’s next for you two? G: We have been through alot in the past 3 ½ years with multiple long distance bouts. I spent 4 months in Israel for a summer and 1 ½ years in St. Louis for graduate school. I think we’re ready to just be together in the same place and travel together! We plan to go to British Columbia, Canada for our honeymoon and France this Fall. J: Well in the short run; going abroad and running off to a national park every time we can. Soon? Dog ownership. Maybe a bit down the road? 2.5 kids and a white picket fence. Gabby & Jon •

His Story THE PROPOSAL

I

had been planning the proposal for months. We drove to Colorado for a weekend away in Steamboat Springs, a pretty little resort town. On the first day we toured the town and drove all around the surrounding countryside. We went to a state park where I had planned to propose by a beautiful lake I had looked up beforehand. Unfortunately, when we got there it was totally full of families with their jet skis and bbqs getting ready for a fun Saturday. We kept driving around and the car started to get tense while I looked for a good spot to propose while trying not to let on what I was doing. I was about to give up and take her to dinner (I had a fallback plan of proposing on the river walk near the restaurant) when she said “Let’s just drive up that mountain a bit outside of town.” So we went up the mountain and found a pretty little secluded viewing area. We walked a bit away from the road into an aspen grove and found a clearing that looked out over the rolling farmlands. I knelt and proposed and she said….”Oh my gosh!”...and then she said “Yes!”

Her Story THE PROPOSAL

A

t the time I was still in St. Louis for graduate school. I went to visit Jon in between semesters and he wanted to take me on a weekend trip to Steamboat Springs, CO. It was a cute little ski town that we were going to spend the day exploring and Jon had made nice dinner reservations for later that evening. We started our day by getting brunch. Then we walked through the town and did a little shopping. Since we knew we were having a nicer dinner later in the day we decided to dress up. After exploring the town, Jon said there were some really pretty drives and a lake so I was really excited! We went to the lake and went on a really pretty drive. We made a lot of stops and looked at cool views. We actually drove around quite a bit, because we came back into town and went up to the ski resort. Then we went back into town and drove out the other way up the mountain. We were heading up switchbacks and I finally realized “Oh! He’s trying to find somewhere to propose!”. By this time, he seemed to be getting frustrated and was going to stop but I told him to go to the next pull off. The next pull off turned out to have a perfect view with a little aspen grove and a perfect log to sit on. I took some pictures and he hugged me and kneeled down and opened a ring box that had my perfect ring inside. He asked me to marry him and I said YES!
