This season is jam packed with festivals celebrating food & drink, such as the Manchester Food & Drink Festival, starting in late September, based around Albert Square. In our ‘The New Creatives’ piece we talk to the new generation of artists who live and work in Manchester.
We look at some of their work through the eyes of two independent galleries the NQ Gallery and Egoiste Gallery, both with shops in Afflecks. We are pleased to find that Manchester is still a force in the art world and that these new creative’s are making some amazing pieces which could be an excellent investment for the future. An exciting programme of events for 2018 is being promised by Rochdale Borough Council to provide a boost to residents and businesses as well as attracting thousands of visitors from across the region. We asked Councillor Janet Emsley (Cabinet Member for neighbourhoods, community and culture) she is very upbeat about the coming year commenting:
“There’s a lot to look forward to and this programme of events is another significant commitment by the council to give residents and visitors a lot of good reasons to keep coming into town, supporting our shops, businesses and attractions, as well as generating positive publicity for the borough week after week. We’re certainly not standing still either, even with the wellestablished events you will notice improvements and new ideas, all designed with visitors in mind. Additionally the council will also be supporting numerous other events organised by community groups and individuals that help to expand this busy calendar.”

The New Creatives
Manchester has been artistic hub for decades and here we talk to its’ modern day artists
You are probably already aware of the diverse and rich selection of the arts in Manchester. The city has large and small galleries, numerous festivals running through the year, every kind of artist and maker, universities, theatres and its street art is famous across the world. It is not a new thing either, home to art 14 events and festivals for at least 150 years Four years after Manchester was awarded it’s city status (in 1857) it hosted the largest art show in Britain - Art Treasures of the United Kingdom. The exhibition’s crowning piece was Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child which was promptly renamed the Manchester Madonna, which is still her name today. It attracted some of the biggest names at the time among them were Queen Victoria, Charles Dickens and Napoleon. Incidentally, the show also contributed to the birth of the Britain’s oldest orchestra - the Hallé Orchestra - as it first played there and they enjoyed it so much that Hallé was born. The exhibition proved Manchester is a worthy contender in a market traditionally dominated by London and it has remained that way to this day.
Manchester has a very rich visual art history repleat with names such as William Stott, Helen Bradley, David Vaughan, LS Lowry and others. A lot has been said about these well established names, but it is time we had a look at the new stars on the city’s creative horizon. New, exciting and independent artists are creating somewhat of a new wave; a new art movement on the scene. We spoke to two of the newest additions to the scene; the Northern Quarter and Egoiste Galleries, both located in the iconic Afflecks. Afflecks has been a haven for artists and their creative spirit for years. There you can discover and buy stunning pieces of high level art directly from the artists. This could potentially be the best investment of your life, as we have discovered from recent art auctions.

The NQ Gallery is run and curated by designer Johanne Fisher. She moved to Manchester after many years in London, originally trained in textile design and surface decoration. After a lucrative career in art direction and corporate graphic design she knew that she wanted more creative freedom and independence and a chance to foster other creatives. So with the support of her partner Giles she started Sunflowers In The Sea, Which was soon joined by the NQ Gallery.

Ben Sedman
Ben Sedman
At the forefront of NQ is the photographer Ben Sedman and it’s highly likely that you will have seen one, if not many, of his artistic collages or his famous Manchester Bee. Since childhood he was interested in photography and it’s power to capture the natural and man-made world. Working in vibrant colours and textures he creates beautiful images that have proved very popular. Ben is also a lecturer at the MMU, a part owner of the Chorlton Art Market and the creator of the Art In The Alley Movement.
Sue Scott
Another resident artist is Sue Scott, who has ben painting all her life however, only started doing it as a full career some six years ago. Her imagery has an instantly recognisable style and the subjects are usually urban landscapes, skylines and have a strong architecture tilt. These striking creations are often inspired by Manchester and it’s long industrial heritage. Painting mostly in acrylics Sue has an exceptionally clean and geometrically pleasing style. Sue also creates the covers for our guides, for which we are very grateful.

Dunstan Doodles
Dunstan is an artist, illustrator and animator whose experience spans all kinds of work. These include children’s book illustrations, such as Alligator Snaps and Haiku Zoo: Lion, to creating art work for record labels, comedians and musicians. Dunstan prefers to create by hand and enjoys the physicality of the process. He has also produced a reflective series of portraits of Manchester icons (some shown opposite).
Sue Willis
Sue is a Manchester based artist and studied at the Chelsea College of Art. She uses a variety of media to create her art including oil, digital, photography, maps and text. 20 She is interested in our relationships to the places we live in, memories, emotions and music. One of our particular favourite is the Madchester Metrolink stop map.
Christian Taylord
Christian is a self taught artist creating striking and colourful images on a glass surface which are then box framed creating a 3D effect. Having worked for various charities he has gone to created the stunning Manchester Pride Worker Bee. The Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotel has recently commissioned him to create a series of dedicated works to be used to help promote this Manchester landmark hotel.Christopher Clements

The CAPE by NQ Gallery
The CAPE is the latest addition to The Corn Exchange, created by NQ Gallery, and it is giving Manchester artists and creatives a fantastic chance to showcase their work. With a wide variety of artistic skills featured including painters, photographers and designers, it is aiming to showcase the very best of Manchester’s artists. Curated by Johanne Fisher and Ben Sedman this new gallery is located within the iconic Corn Exchange development, in Cathedral Gardens, situated on Fennel Street and is housed in one of the dazzling glass boxes. Open from 11am-6pm Wednesday to Saturday; you’ll be able to meet some of the artists that are situated here and talk to them about what makes their work so special.
Why The Cape?
We wanted a name that tied in with the history of The Corn Exchange and so drew inspiration from the original purpose of the building as a Corn And Produce Exchange, hence The CAPE.

Egoîste Gallery is owned and run by the artist Baiba Auria and Andrew Courtenay with the support of artists George Mellor and Jamie Clayborough.
Sonia Dalga
Egoîste is the exclusive stockist of the phenomenal art doll sculptor Sonia Dalga who creates Tim Burtonesque characters from clay and other materials. 24 This art has a mythical feel to it, the human-bird hybrids, the lost angels and melancholy lovers. Her work is highly collectable and original, with each peace being completely unique and never repeated.
Baiba Auria
Is a portrait artist living and working in Manchester. She is partially sighted, from birth, which has intensified her fascination with images and colours. She is particularly interested in the human face and a lot of her work plays with the distortion of it while retaining recognisability. Working in a digital medium and in classic oil paint, Biaba has gained high acclaim through her unusual digital portraits of stars such as David Bowie.
Christopher Clements
Painting people and environments from life, balancing chaos and order with elements of change at work during the process. He studied Classical Realism in the atelier tradition in Florence, where he developed a high level of technical skill and a distinctive interpretive style. Exhibiting widely including the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, he combines his practice with directing Northern Realist Drawing and Painting atelier.

Matthew Leak
A new acquisition is this mosaic artist. He is most inspired by music growing up loving Motown, Soul, The Beatles… His original portraits are often mixed media, using graffiti street art techniques and more robust ceramic mosaics. This creates a very unusual effect which you can see in the gallery in a spellbinding portrait of Chris Cornell.
Stanley Chow
The future is indeed digital, as Egoiste also represents Manchester’s own world renowned digital artist Stanley Chow whose work can be found anywhere from our Metrolink to the New Yorker. Specialising in portraits he has a very recognisable laconic style using a refined colour palette. left: Sonia Dalga centre: David Bowie - Baiba Auria right: Matthew Leak - Kylie Egoîste Gallery, Afflecks, Manchester egoistegallery.com | @egoistegallery
This diverse range of talent, shown in just two independent galleries, illustrates the city’s incredibly rich art scene. Many make their first steps into the art marketplace by joining the award winning Makers Market; here gaining the skills and confidence to start their 26 own art business. Manchester offers shoppers a wide selection of independent art and craft galleries who each deserve recognition, such as Kula, Manchester Craft and Design Centre and the Paper Gallery, to mention just a few. Mancunians are passionate and serious when it comes to creativity. They express their emotions, hope and strength through it, a good example of that is the Manchester Bee. An icon of the city, it has inspired hundreds of new art pieces as it expresses a united Manchester spirit with so much hope and togetherness. It is a visual marker of how important art is and can be. So take time out to support artists and their art and long may this a golden age of creativity last.

Manchetser Pride - (c0 Unlock Manchester
unlockmanchester.com | @unlockmcr
We are now well into the summer season and it has already been an excellent one. For those keen on music and dancing we’ve experienced the Blue Dot Festival, at Jodrell Bank, and Parklife, yet again drawing huge crowds to the city. Whereas the great city games saw Deansgate converted into a vast sportsfield where thousands watched professional athletes compete. But he summer is not over just yet we still have Head to the Hills, Creamfields and of course the city’s’ biggest annual party ‘Manchester Pride’ with its vast city parade, held over the August bank holiday weekend, to look forward to. There are any-number of music events happening across the city too. We can recommend the ever expanding ‘Manchester Jazz Festival’, explore the record industry and learn how its works at ‘Off the Record’ in November or the citywide event that is the Neighbourhood 31 Festival focusing on live music. Now the World Cup is over you might be interested to see the ‘A History of Russian Football’ exhibit at the Football museum. The popular ‘Strawberry Studios: I am in Love’ continues to excite visitors in Stockport and the MCR Art Fair (previously Buy Art Fair) is going to be held at Manchester Central in October. The theatres too are going to be packed and musicals are leading the way. Coming soon are ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’, The Beatles ‘Let it Be’, ‘Kinky Boots’ and the return of ‘Wicked’. Don’t forget that there are lazy weekends to relax and discover some of Greater Manchester’s amazing markets. You’ll never know what you’ll find on those stall possibly even that elusive Christmas present. Wait what? Christmas already….

Being part of an audience is an exciting feeling and Manchester certainly has a wealth of theatres offering very diverse productions for your enjoyment. Independent theatres such as Hope Mill or the 3 Minute Theatre, in Afflecks, are breaking grounds for new works which regularly head to the big lights of London and onwards. This coming season sees some interesting and very exciting productions for us all to enjoy. The Comedy About a Bank Robbery has had London audiences in tears of laughter, whereas Mathew Bourne’s Swan Lake will enthral you in its beauty while Joanna Lumley takes us through her often hilarious career at the Lowry in October. Fancy a fix of Laurel & Hardy? Then Stockport Plaza are holding a celebration of the comedic duo, screening a selection of their greatest performances.
The summer is also a great time for children’s theatre with productions such as Doctor Doolittle, What the Ladybird Heard and Madagascar – The Musical Adventure as spin off of the popular DreamWorks film. Musicals have been a stalwart of the theatre for several years and it seems 2018 is going to be no different, with the return of Wicked, an new production An Officer and a Gentleman and the Cyndi Laupers’ musical based upon the real life story of a British shoe manufacture Kinky Boots. Continuing the musical theme we will be treated to ‘Let it Be’ - jam packed with Beatle hits, Rock of Ages an LA love story with a rocky soundtrack and Motown the Musical celebrating the windy city and its stunning performers and song writers.

Agbeko - Manchester Jazz Festival
42
It’s difficult to avoid Manchester’s musical connection. Everyday there are new bands being formed, musicians trained and songwriters slaving over hot laptops in the city’s coffee bars. Take a stroll into the Northern Quarter and you walk in the footsteps of, and experience spaces where, many world famous musicians have been and performed. Oldham Street alone has The Night and Day Café, The Castle and Gullivers all part of Manchester’s long musical history. Around the corner is Matt & Phreds, a performance space dedicated to Jazz, a central hub for touring bands; we can also recommend La Gitane on Bridge Street. Band on the Wall, Swan Street, is a venue of renown. In its intimate space you can see all manner of solo artists, bands and even the now almost legendary Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club.
Classical music is extremely well served with superb venues such as the Bridgewater Hall, the Stoller Hall and the RNCM each offering world-class experiences; they even have some pop bands too! This season is full of huge outdoor festivals celebrating music and offering great opportunities to party with your friends. Check out the Cotton Clouds Festival, Festwich, for full on Rock tribute bands, the long running dance fest that is Creamfields or start your Autumn off at the returning musicial event Warehouse Project, from September. For those who like something a bit different try the Manchester Jazz Festival, taking over the city’s street and venues, the Caribbean Carnival at Platt Fields or the Last Night of the Proms at the Bridgewater hall.

The Metroshuttle bus is a free service and makes travelling around the city easy and quick; just find a stop, stick out your arm and hail one of these modern buses. With its three routes, the shuttle buses cover most of the city and have good interconnections with each another. The routes are circular so even if you miss your stop just stay on and it will come round again. You could even use them as way to sightsee the city, although be warned that they can get very busy, especially at peak times. The buses are clearly marked and you can use the map to find the stops and route information. The Manchester Metrolink trams, in their fun bright yellow livery, trundle across the city transporting commuters and visitors alike. They connect the main stations of Piccadilly and Victoria to the wider region and Manchester Airport.
The new second city crossing completes the public transport jigsaw, with a direct line running right through to Rochdale. The semi-organised chaos caused by the St Peter’s Square stop development is over. The new state of the art station fits right in with its imposing neighbours, the Central Library, The Town Hall and Manchester Art Gallery. If you are off to The Lowry Theatre or the Outlet Mall, in Salford Quays, the tram will whisk you there in about 10 minutes from Piccadilly Gardens. Bury, with its attractions such as the East Lancashire Railway, its award wining Market and The Met theatre are only 30 minutes away. These services, coupled with the commercial buses routes and the national railway connections, make reaching and getting about the city very simple - Just remember to buy a ticket!
