Gosh! That was a warm summer and now Piccadilly Gardens has finally returned to space that can be enjoyed the fountain has been a super attraction for kids splashing about in it to quell the heat. Manchester’s ‘Bee in the City’ Project has been a great success. As I walked about the city I constantly ran into people taking pictures of them and looking for the next one, although to be honest I’m not sure how many made it out to Blackey… It drew thousands of visitors into the city and added to Manchester’s culture I am looking forward to next year’s event and hoping it is just as exciting. The city is experiencing yet another building and redevelopment surge. Ancoats is fast becoming the next hot place for to ‘open’. There are so many residential apartments under construction the whole area is soon likely to be one of the city’s most vibrant quarters. Now HS2 is well underway the area surrounding Piccadilly Station is starting to get people excited. The Mayfield, commonly used for events and exhibitions has had a busy summer. While the London Road Fire Station is now clad in scaffold and we hope this fabulous building soon emerges to join the city’s exciting venues.

South of the A57(M) the new home for MMU is pouring concrete almost night and day and looks enormous. No doubt this will be a huge boom to students studying there and local businesses. North of this both Manchester Square and Kampus are piling ahead and will help to revitalise this part of the city. In this edition we take a close look at MediaCityUK over at Salford Quays. After all that excitement we return to the city and explore Manchester’s ‘gourmet’ coffee scene created by many independent coffee grinders and purveyors. MediaCityUK Salford Quays - a classic transformation from disuse into a modern high-tech wonder

The Manchester Ship Canal was the main thoroughfare for shipping between Manchester and Liverpool and the vast docks, in Salford, connected the city to the world beyond. However, as manufacturing in the Northwest subsided so did the fortunes of these once proud docks. And by 1992 the docks where closed for good leaving a legacy of history and infrastructure that simply was no longer important to the world economy. In the mid 1980s Salford council acquired the docks and started to create a plan to redevelop the enormous 220acre site. It is fair to say that the plan really began to have local impact when the Lowry Theatre was opened on Pier 8 in 2000 and interestingly its first exhibition was one of a Victorian Salford photographer one Samual L. Coulthurst (a relative of the editors). 5 Eighteen years later Salford Quays are now an important part of Greater Manchester; home to national broadcasters the BBC and ITV, the old canals and docks are used for sailing and there is even a water taxi service. In this issue we visit Salford Quays to get a feel of what is on offer to the visitor and find many exciting reasons to take the quick ten-minute tram ride from Peters Square for a fun day out.

MediaCityUK, on the banks of the Manchester Ship Canal is home to the likes of the BBC, ITV, Ericsson, dock10 and Kellogg’s, and is further complemented by over 250 media and digital businesses. It’s a host to a wide variety of leisure activities, whilst being an international hub for technology, innovation and creativity. The BBC’s move to MediaCityUK in 2011 was one of the most ambitious projects in the history of the BBC and created a new centre of excellence outside London for production, technology development, training and digital media. With around 3,200 staff working in 26 departments including CBBC/CBeebies, BBC Learning, BBC Radio 5 live, BBC Sport, BBC Radio Manchester and BBC Breakfast, thousands of hours of content for television, radio and online are produced from here.

The BBC occupies three buildings at MediaCityUK - Quay House, Bridge House and Dock House. Each of these impressive buildings houses a host of departments covering the wide spectrum of content the BBC produces for television, radio and the BBC Worldwide extensive catalogue. Alongside the BBC buildings is the main studio block known as Dock10. Although this is not a BBC building, a great deal of BBC’s output from MediaCityUK is filmed or broadcast from these vast studios.

The BBC was offering regular tours of their Manchester Oxford Road studios for many years and, when they moved to their gleaming new home in Salford, of course the public were eager to see inside. Every tour is different as this is a working facility and the activity in the studios changes on daily basis. Believe it or not, the first BBC radio broadcast was way back in 1922 and the first regular BBC television broadcasts started in 1936. Back then, Salford Quays was a very different place and being used for a very different purpose.

Who could have envisaged how the world of industry would change and advancements in technology would drastically alter the way we live our lives. 8 In an ever-changing digital world, not only has the BBC kept up with technology, but it has become a driving, inventive force, constantly looking to the future. The impressive new facilities at MediaCityUK reflect this and will allow the BBC to continue being the pioneering force it is within the broadcast industry. BBC Tours are currently operating in Birmingham, Bristol, Newcastle, Glasgow, Cardiff and Belfast, but the MediaCityUK tours are the biggest and run most frequently. Lasting approximately 90 minutes, each tour takes you behind the scenes to show you the reality of broadcasting, the many hours of blood, sweat and tears that production teams, presenters and journalists put in to bring you the slick looking programmes that appear on your screens.

The Tour Guides give a lively insight into the many programmes originating from the BBC in the North and the level of work it takes to get them from script to screen. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll tell you about the famous faces who have visited the buildings and answer any burning questions about the technical wizardry behind the scenes. The multi-award winning IWM North brings the national collection to northern audiences. Designed by world renowned architect Daniel Libeskind to represent a globe shattered by conflict, the iconic building, innovative and dynamic exhibitions, use of digital media through hourly Big Picture Shows and public events explore how war shapes lives and inspires and encourages debate. On site at the museum until 25th November 2018, ‘Wave’ is from the installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, by artist Paul Cummins, and installation designed by Tom Piper. The installation was originally at HM Tower of London with 888,246 poppies were displayed, one for every British or Colonial life lost at the Front during the First World War. This special exhibition was closed in November 2014.

Metrolink offers fast, frequent and fully accessible transport to and from Manchester city centre. Take the Eccles line to MediaCityUK and walk across the footbridge to reach the museum. The Lowry is a large arts and entertainment venue based in Salford, housing two galleries, three theatres, and a bar and restaurant called Pier Eight. Named after the painter LS Lowry, the building is home to the worlds largest collection of his works, and has a dedicated gallery to them. The second gallery presents exciting new exhibitions from contemporary artists. The three theatres present productions of all sizes including dance, drama, musicals, circus, opera, music, comedy and family shows. The Lowry Outlet Mall is directly opposite the imposing Lowry Theatre main entrance both of which are situated on a large open square that is home to the monthly Makers Market (held on the last weekend of the month). The Hip Hop Chip Shop is a much loved and award winning mobile business serving untraditional fish & chips inspired by the inventive and experimental ethos of hip hop culture. Their unmistakeable boombox trailer, also used for private parties, weddings & corporate and public events, has been at MediaCityUK since March 2016. South Manny Flavaz are the youngest street food vendor in Manchester currently and have been trading at media city for the last 12 months. They have recently acquired a restaurant of their own called Bistro 1116 located in south Manchester on Chester Road, Stretford. The menu is a very niche concept, being the only vendors in the north west making infused waffles, and the only trader in the UK to launch our handheld chicken ‘n’ waffles which is called ‘Chick n Cone’.

The Alchemist, standing proud on the canal and central to the Lowry and MediaCityUK. It is a stone’s throw from the MediaCity tram stop and looks out across a large dock. Coffee Scene @MCR An evolution of culture, taste and soul all created Manchesterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coffee passion

The Manchester coffee scene is true to the core roots of its city. Friendly, approachable, stylish and full of northern character. What began as a small number of 24 passionate people has now flourished into a prosperous scene transforming coffee into a booming business in Manchester. Speciality coffee can be described in many ways, with a lot being said of waves and what numbers we are up to. For the sake of simplicity we can talk about speciality coffee as the pursuit of quality, sustainability and taste. Speciality coffee shops are those which use speciality grade coffee and craft it into drinks that allow the true potential of that product to shine through. The pioneers of this movement were North Tea Power, nestled in the Northern Quarter eight years ago, before the neighbourhood became one of the most popular spots in town. If you searched the internet for speciality coffee at that time, they would be the only ones to come up.

Coffee Fix opened in 2012 just outside the city centre in the little village of Gatley and Takk came along on Tariff Street not long after, bringing with it a new slick elegance of Icelandic origins to the city. Fast forward eight years from the start of the speciality coffee scene in Manchester and there are now over twenty independently owned shops in the city centre. It is a very exciting time as a lot of shops are expanding across the city, opening their second or third stores. Including Pot Kettle Black, awarded with Coffee Shop of the Year (2018) by the Manchester Food and Drink Festival.

Federal Cafe and Bar, will have a new location on Deansgate challenging the city centre brunch operators to up their game and offer not only great coffee but also elaborate food menus. North Tea Power, however, decided to grow outside the city and opened Mother Espresso in Liverpool, and Takk are opening a second location on Oxford Road. Trove have added to the scene by opening their second unit in Ancoats, doubling up from their original home in Levenshulme, bringing their selection of quality baked goods closer to the heart of the city. Along with these coffee shops Manchester now also boasts five roasters namely ManCoCo, Ancoats, Passionfruit, Heart & Graft and Grindsmith Coffee Roasters.

Some of these have all grown organically from pursuing excellent products and focusing on the community around them. Heart and Graft began roasting in a shed, Ancoats in a warehouse and Grindsmith evolved from an adapted garden office and a trike into a roastery. Each one having strong roots in the city and helping develop one another in a vibrant community of dedicated professionals, determined to provide Manchester with the culture and soul it thrives on.

Autumn brings in the darkening nights and with it a change to the events held across Manchester. There are many promising exhibitions coming of these the Central Library is host to ‘There is a light that never goes out’ focusing on Manchester’s modern music history. The Royal Academy Takeover continues at Ordsall Hall a chance to experience some amazing art pieces and at the MSI ‘Stephensons’ Rocket is on display until April 2018. The city’s stages will be full of music this season and we think that Bjorn Again, Manchester Academy, will have you dancing, Doctor Doolittle, The Lowry, will astound the audience while Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake with entrance everyone. Looking for something more brash? Then how about Bongo’s Bingo, Albert Hall, for music and shear madness! Or 31 experience the spectacular that is Jeff Wayne’s War of the Worlds at the Arena. You simply cannot avoid Christmas and the kids will love the East Lancashire Santa Specials or Breakfast with Santa at Stockport Plaza. Being part of an audience is an exciting feeling and Manchester certainly has a wealth of theatres offering very diverse productions for your enjoyment. The RNCM are presenting a new production of Puccini’s ‘Sister Angelica’ and ‘Gianna Schicchi’ featuring drama and comedy all in one event (not to be missed). Stickman is becoming another popular show, aimed at the younger audience, this engaging story will enchant your kids. It’s difficult to avoid Manchester’s musical connection. Everyday there are new bands being formed, musicians trained and songwriters slaving over hot laptops in the city’s coffee bars. Take a stroll into the Northern Quarter and you walk in the footsteps of, and experience spaces where, many world famous musicians have been and performed. Oldham Street alone has The Night and Day Café, The Castle and Gullivers all part of Manchester’s long musical history. Around the corner is Matt & Phreds, a performance space dedicated to Jazz, a central hub for touring bands; we can also recommend La Gitane on Bridge Street. Band on the Wall, Swan Street, is a venue of renown. In its intimate space you can see all manner of solo artists, bands and even the now almost legendary Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club.

Classical music is extremely well served with superb venues such as the Bridgewater Hall, the Stoller Hall and the RNCM each offering world-class experiences; they even have some pop bands too! For many years the Northern Soul movement was based at the Twisted Wheel (demolished in 2016). This Manchester club-night has found a new home at NightPeople, on Sackville Street, and its audiences continue to grow. Foundations is all about live grassroots music, performance and film. Across two days expect the un-expected and you might discover that emerging talent. Manchester Cathedral has a full dairy of events and its Viennese Christmas might well be one of the seasonal highlights. Whereas, the Arena has All Saints in concert and Jeff Wayne’s amazing War of the Worlds returns on the 2nd December.

The Metroshuttle bus is a free service and makes travelling around the city easy and quick; just find a stop, stick out your arm and hail one of these modern buses. With its three routes, the shuttle buses cover most of the city and have good interconnections with each another. The routes are circular so even if you miss your stop just stay on and it will come round again. You could even use them as way to sightsee the city, although be warned that they can get very busy, especially at peak times. The buses are clearly marked and you can use the map to find the stops and route information. The Manchester Metrolink trams, in their fun bright yellow livery, trundle across the city transporting commuters and visitors alike. They connect the main stations of Piccadilly and Victoria to the wider region and Manchester Airport.

The new second city crossing completes the public transport jigsaw, with a direct line running right through to Rochdale. The semi-organised chaos caused by the St Peterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Square stop development is over. The new state of the art station fits right in with its imposing neighbours, the Central Library, The Town Hall and Manchester Art Gallery. If you are off to The Lowry Theatre or the Outlet Mall, in Salford Quays, the tram will whisk you there in about 10 minutes from Piccadilly Gardens. Bury, with its attractions such as the East Lancashire Railway, its award wining Market and The Met theatre are only 30 minutes away. These services, coupled with the commercial buses routes and the national railway connections, make reaching and getting about the city very simple - Just remember to buy a ticket!
