Welcome
A summer of events and activities to keep you and your family entertained Welcome to our summer guide to unlocking all that Manchester has to offer, whether your are a resident or a visitor to our city and there is a lot to do. Since we last spoke Manchester has seen a hideous attack that has touched so many lives and we would like to extend our sympathies to all those affected by that terrible event. I found the city’s streets to be somewhat empty following the Victoria bomb. However, I also saw our strong sense of community and inclusion, reflected in the ‘We Love Manchester’ campaign. This has helped to restore confidence and strength to the city and its people. In this edition we have taken sometime to explore the Cafe Culture of Manchester. We discover underground venues, tasty lunchtime dishes and some amazing coffees severed with cakes, possibly not so good for your diet. These cafes are not just in the city centre, we have found some great fayre in Chorlton, Didsbury and Hulme all reachable by the Metrolink, buses or even the new Mobikes. Mentioning the Mobike, have you got yours yet? It appears to have been a huge hit, with its focus on allowing you ‘drop off ’ your ride anywhere, yes madness I hear you cry.
We can heartily recommend you give it a spin (check out Exchange Square, a hub for the bikes). Also, you will find an interesting article about Bury and hopefully it will inspire you to take a trip. With offerings of modern art, our industrial heritage at the East Lancashire Railway and one the country’s oldest regiments The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (formed in 1688) and its museum that reflects its globe 3 spanning history. Visit unlockmanchester.com for an extensive ‘what’s on’ events calendar. I wish you a cheery summer and encourage you explore all the offerings in and around this great city. As the city expands, so too does the number of cool hangouts. Like London, Melbourne and Rome, the city centre and its surrounding suburbs are scattered with an increasing amount of independently run places to meet friends, gain respite from the workplace or plug in your laptop and finish that novel you’ve been working on. Every taste is catered for. Our cafes offer fragrant teas, smooth coffees, plus all manner of refreshing soft drinks, beers and wines. With this comes an array of indulgent food, including artisan brunch items, homemade soups and sandwiches, as well as all manner of pastries and baked goods. So whether you’re looking for traditional favourites, have a dietary requirement which needs meeting, or fancy a twist on the conventional, Manchester has it covered.
Here, we highlight a selection of the Manchester’s best places to spend both your time and money. All are within walking distance of the city centre or a short tram ride away. The only problem you’ll have is deciding which one you’re going to visit first!
right: Black Milk Afflecks
Black Milk
With two locations just a stone’s throw apart and delivery service available, Black Milk is slowly taking over central Manchester with its calor-ific menu of all things bad for you! Everything is made to order, so you can have a short wait for it to arrive, but when it does you’ll understand why. ‘Freakshakes’ (including the legendary Triple Oreo Cheesecake) come served in a sky-high glass tankard, oozing with sticky sauce and topped with a portion of dessert on top.
Slightly healthier options can be found with smoothies or dairy-free smoothie bowls with granola, oats and fresh fruits. In keeping with the distinct American theme, you might instead opt for an edible chocolate bowl of imported cereal such as Unicorn Dreams: Lucky Charms and Ricicles topped with mini marshmallows, Rainbow Drops and Flying Saucers, served with strawberry sauce and milk. 88 Oldham Street M4 1LF 2nd Floor, Afflecks Palace M4 1PW blackmilkcereal.com
Recently opened on the corner of Whitworth Street and Sackville Street this cafe has a distinct Gardenesque feel with potted herbs adorning huge sunlit windows. The decor is simple with a spacious informal dining area and a welcoming blue colour permeates throughout. It focuses on sourcing local produce which is freshly prepared every day. Large and inviting blackboard menus offer a wide and regularly changing selection. Expect a range of salads, sandwiches, panini, pies, pastries and specially prepared hot dishes, we can recommend the Bean Chilli. Those who enjoy a great coffee will be pleased to know that it is sourced from the Ancoats Coffee Company and of course there is a long list of coffee styles on offer.
The cafe presents an enjoyable atmosphere for breakfast, lunch and if you’re feeling peckish in the afternoon pop along for tea, coffee and cakes! Its close proximity to Sackville Gardens affords you chance to enjoy its fayre in this small and pleasant park should the sun shine... Chez is situated only 3 minutes from Piccadilly station and the Palace Theatre on Oxford Rd. 36-38 Whitworth St M1 3NR Tel: 0161 236 2266 @CHEZmcr Open: Monday - Friday 7.30am - 5.30pm Saturday & Sunday 9am - 3pm
Nexus Art Café
Grindsmith
Located in the heart of the city, Nexus Art Café is a creative space built on an ethos of inclusivity. It is run as a notfor-profit café and arts venue, offering exhibitions and music alongside a menu which is as colourful as its décor. Fairtrade coffees, warming hot Vimto and fresh smoothies all wash down ‘butties’ made with toasted Barbakan Bakery Camper Grain bread. If meat isn’t to your liking, why not try the F.O.S.H (falafel, olive, spinach and hummus). If it is, then order yourself the brilliantly named Katy Piri (spicy chicken, chorizo, paprika mayo and tomato) or the BBC (bacon, brie and cranberry). Salads, vegan soups, jacket potatoes and toasties are also available: classic café cuisine at prices which offer excellent value for money. If you can make room, round off your visit by sampling one of tempting sweet treats available.
Having started life in 2013 with its ever-popular 5m x 3m wooden pod on Greengate Square, Grindsmith has expanded and plans to do so even more. Founders Luke Tomlinson and Pete Gibson now have a central coffee shop which opens until late for nocturnal caffeine fiends. It also doubles up as a working and or meeting space which can be hired for events. The team are truly passionate about coffee (keep your eyes peeled for courses which can be booked online) and offer the finest beans from around the world to their customers around the clock. This love for serving the best available produce also applies to their food: breakfast, brunch and lunch cater for all tastes using only the finest ingredients, seasoned with care and attention.

Oak Street Café
Located in the Manchester Craft & Design Centre, worth a good look about itself, the dedicatedly fresh and inventive Oak Street Cafe Bar is an essential visit. From delicious soups and warming stews, to scrumptious salads and yummy cakes, you’ll definitely be tempted by the fabulous selection of homemade food. The menu changes daily but always includes vegan, gluten free options and even wheat free cakes. The food is sourced from the Chorlton based Barbikan Dellicatessan and Unicorn Grocery who supply our fresh bread and produce. The local New Smithfield Market provide the tables with fruit and vegetables. On sunnier days you can sit outside and people-watch as the NQ’s hipsters and its colourful characters go by. Oak St. Cafe’s a winner with an utterly moreish selection of cakes, baked fresh on site. The Cafe makes an excellent meeting and jumping off point to explore the vibratant Northern Quarter. Proper Tea
As the name suggests, Proper Tea don’t do things by half. Their menu specialises in fine loose tea and caters for the cautious and the adventurous alike when it comes to satisfying taste buds. In addition to familiar black, green and white teas, the fantastically-located tea house offers flowering tea (worth ordering for the spectacle it provides alone!) and a selection of aromatic infusions.
For the thrill-seekers, the cafĂŠ provides an ever-changing selection of rare and unusual options, some of which can also be bought to take home in an individually numbered presentation tin. To eat, why not sample the tasty Polish rye bread with one of the many toppings available or instead opt for a classic afternoon tea with its three tiers of freshly made treats. Teatime Collective
Just a short distance from the city centre, Hulme’s vegan-friendly café and ice cream parlour is a far cry from the conventional offerings. Its shipping container seating spaces have been transformed both inside and out to provide a colourful and homely community setting. The breakfast menu is both fresh and substantially-sized. The hot sandwich selection is equally filling, whilst vibrant 10 salads are a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach! The dessert selection is ever-changing and much cheaper than you might expect, as are the teas, coffees and hot chocolate drinks offered alongside them. The café is surrounded by plenty of outdoor space for dogs and children to play, which adds to the welcoming atmosphere at its enterprise centre location. In the evening, the venue can be hired for private functions with a delicious set menu and ‘bring your own alcohol’ (no corkage).

The Art of Tea
This independent café bar, tucked around the corner from Didsbury village, is adjoined to Didsbury Village Bookshop. You can sample from the seasonal menu at the front before searching for classic novels and hidden gems to read at the back. Breakfast, lunch and dinner serving times overlap, allowing you choose your preference without restraint. You can have your eggs in the morning whichever way you like, washed down with one of many locally sourced loose leaf teas. In the afternoon, decadent sandwiches (such as the maple roasted sweet potato and black quinoa) truly hit the spot. Then in the evening, tapas consisting of dips, platters and salads – or perhaps a homemade pizza – go perfectly with a glass of wine or beer from the specially selected drinks menu. Later at night, live music regularly provides an awesome soundtrack within its intimate setting.

Bury Town
This historic Lancashire presents a wealth of interesting and exciting attractions
Bury Town is a suburb of Greater Manchester and is easily reached from the city centre in less than 30 minutes, either on the tram or by car. A trip to Bury can make for a rewarding day out: its many attractions include the beautifully restored East Lancashire Railway. 16 Its 12 miles of track explores the stunning local scenery, passing through local towns such as Summerseat, and chugging past a considerable amount of real-ale pubs, providing you with inspiration for your next ‘country walk with a pub at the end’ mission. There are three excellent museums, there’s the Art and Sculpture Centre where you will encounter works from Victorian artists such as William Turner right through to modern art pieces by the likes of Lawrence Weiner and Jane Dyer. Next door, The Fusilier Museum next door delves into over 300 years of regimental military history. This excellent museum is home to the collections of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. The regiment was established in 1688 and the museum tells its story right up to the present day.
The third institution is the Bury Transport Museum and within its halls you will discover the industrial heritage of the Northwest. With its collection of stunningly restored vehicles, original artefacts and interactive exhibits you can explore the working lives of people from the early 20th century. You may be surprised to learn that Robert Peel, who founded London’s Metropolitan Police Force, was born in Bury. He was also the founder of the British Conservative Party and was twice British Prime Minister. Outside St Mary’s - the town’s parish church - you will find an attractive square, which was originally home to the village market, and at its centre is a large statue of Robert Peel. This 3.5m high bronze was created by Edward Hodges, originally for London’s Trafalgar Square.
Fusilier Memorial Gallipoli Garden, Bury
St Mary’s is the highest point in the town and there has been a church on this site for over 1000 years. The present church is Victorian in date and is worth peeking into, not least to have a gaze at the highly decorative floor. Take a short walk around the gardens and you’ll come across large memorial slabs that have been repurposed as flagstones. Reading these will give you some insight into the history of the people of Bury, Summer is a lovely time to visit Bury as you will find it decked out with ornamental flower displays and hanging baskets galore. The town is a multiple year winner 18 of the coveted ‘Britain in Bloom’ award.
An evening in Bury can be a highly pleasant one, with several good pubs serving quality food and drink. The Clarence, on Silver Street, offers good fayre and real beer enthusiasts should try the Silver Street ‘Session’ pale ale. This, and a few other tipples, is brewed in the pub’s basement. Once you are fed and watered you may choose to attend a performance at The Met. This is the performance heart of the Town and its stage is home to touring shows and local productions alike.
The Met, recently refurbishment, is one of the best theatres in Greater Manchester, with spacious auditoriums and a new bar. Bury has a world famous market, open from Monday to Saturday, and has been voted ‘Market of the Year’ on four separate occasions. A huge fire engulfed the old buildings in 1968, totally destroying them, but blitz spirit prevailed and in 1971 the present building was opened. Today you will find fresh local produce, a hall specialising in Fish and Meat and an outdoor open market with over 300 stalls to tempt you. The Rock shopping centre offers shoppers several high street brands. At night it transforms into a playground with restaurants, a 24-lane bowling alley and multi-screen cinema.

Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre
Bury Art Museum & Sculpture Centre showcases the best of international and local art and is the perfect place to enjoy contemporary exhibitions and discover more about the history of Bury. The museum programme is supported by a range of events and activities that encourage visitors to further explore and enjoy the shows and collections. Historic and contemporary works and objects are juxtaposed to provoke questions and present visual prompts that seek to inspire and challenge visitors to make their own connections and develop their own ideas. Exhibitions and the collections are shown in the context of a contemporary dialogue to develop object conversations. The Museum opened in 1901 as a purpose-built gallery to house and display a collection of Victorian oil paintings,
watercolours, etchings, drawings, sculpture and Wedgwood plaques formed by local paper manufacturer, Thomas Wrigley. Over the last century, Bury’s art collection has developed, but its outstanding strength remains the collection of 19th century British art, including works by Turner, Constable, Landseer and Clausen. Since 2000 the Gallery has embarked on an ambitious programme of commissioning contemporary art. The building itself is now a grade II listed building and regarded as the finest in the town.

Bury Fusilier Museum
The Museum is home to the XX Lancashire Fusiliers and the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers collection, commemorating over 300 years of history and heritage. The regiment is part of the Queens Division formed in 1968, which is when it received its new name, and 2018 will be its 50th anniversary. Commemorating this milestone the museum is planning on opening a new exhibition and an artist will be creating works inspired by the museum and the day-to-day life of the Fusiliers. First open in 1934 it examines the history of the regiment, how it has changed since it the regiments founding in 1688 and the countries it has served in. This extensive collection of militaria features many original pieces including soldiers’ uniforms, equipment, historical documents.
It offers visitors a close look at the personal social history, deeds and values of the Fusiliers. The Lancashire Fusiliers have been awarded nineteen Victoria Crosses, eighteen of which were awarded in the First World War, more than any other regiment in that conflict. Today the Museum holds seven VCs as part of its medal collection, including two of the six awarded ‘before breakfast’ to the 1st Battalion at Gallipoli in 1915. The recently installed ‘Rose Window’, created by artist Bridget Jones, is a replacement for one removed during WW2. It represents the artistic and cultural history of Bury as well as highlighting connections with Lowry, the cotton industry, building design, and the Fusilier regiments’ histories.

The 2017 family events have been inspired by characters and themes in the window. Family history is an important part of the museums work. If a member of your family has served in the regiment you can research their military service history. This is supported by a wealth of documents, books and diaries all about the Lancashire Fusiliers, which you can access by making an appointment [check website for details]. The Fusiliers Regimental Memorial is just outside the museum in the ‘Gallipoli Garden’. The garden is named to commemorate those who fell in that campaign and is an important part of Bury’s Armistice Day, held annually on 11th November.
The museums events calendar is full of 25 free family friendly activities such as The Big Draw a fun sketching opportunity or craft sessions, family tours and storytelling. The Wipers Times - The Opera House
38
Being part of an audience is an exciting feeling and Manchester certainly has a wealth of theatres with very diverse productions for your enjoyment. Independent theatres such as Hope Mill or the 3 Minute Theatre, in Afflecks, are breaking grounds for new works which regularly head to the big lights of London and onwards. This season has some excellent highlights like Sunset Boulevard, based on Billy Wilder’s film, at the Palace Theatre, a new dance adaption of the Jungle Book at the Lowry and Ian Hislop and Nick Newman’s story of The Wipers Times set during WWI. You will find stimulating productions at the Royal Exchange Theatre, with its presentation of Jubilee, by Derek Jarman, or try HOME where you can see Chekov’s classic Russian story Uncle Vanya set at time when the world was changing.
The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) productions are music focused and this year’s Christmas production of Cinderella will enchant and enthral with its whit and magic (sung in French). The Stick Man, at the Lowry and Disney on Ice, at the Arena, are sure fire winners to keep your young ones entertained. Exploring further afield the Octagon Theatre in Bolton presents the Three Penny Opera or Comedy Sportz at the Waterside, in Sale, will have you laughing during this impromptu show. The Stockport Plaza has a production of Rogers and Hammerstein’s Okahoma! which will no doubt have you humming the main theme for days...

It difficult to avoid Manchester’s musical connection. Everyday there are new bands being formed, musicians trained and song writers slaving over hot laptops in the city’s coffee bars. Take a stroll into the Northern Quarter and you walk in the footsteps of, and experience spaces where, many world famous musicians have been and performed. Oldham Street alone has The Night and Day, Dry Bar and Gullivers all part of Manchester’s long musical history. Around the corner is Matt & Phreds a performance space dedicated to Jazz, a central hub for touring bands; we can also recommend La Gitane on Bridge Street. Band on the Wall, Swan Street, is a venue of renown. In its intimate space you can see all manner of solo artists, bands and even the almost legendary Craig Charles Funk & Soul Club.
Music, song writing and the industry are explored by two excellent festivals, Louder than Words and Off the Record both held in November. These festivals bring together song writers, artists and publishers providing real insight into the business and some great performances. Classical music is extremely well served with superb venues such as the Bridgewater Hall and the RNCM both world class experiences; they even have some pop bands too! Looking for something different? The Phantom of the Opera (1925), screening at the RNCM, with organist accompaniment or the La La Land screening, with a sixty piece orchestra, at the Bridgewater Hall.

The Metroshuttle bus is a free service and makes travelling around the city easy and quick; just find a stop, stick out your arm and hail one of these modern buses. With its three routes, the shuttle buses cover most of the city and have good interconnections with each another. The routes are circular so even if you miss your stop just stay on and it will come round again. You could even use them as way to sightsee the city, although be warned that they can get very busy, especially at peak times. The buses are clearly marked and you can use the map to find the stops and route information. The Manchester Metrolink trams, in their fun bright yellow livery, trundle across the city transporting commuters and visitors alike. They connect the main stations of Piccadilly and Victoria to the wider region and Manchester Airport.
The new second city crossing completes the public transport jigsaw, with a direct line running right through to Rochdale. The semi-organised chaos caused by the St Peter’s Square stop development is over. The new state of the art station fits right in with its imposing neighbours, the Central Library, The Town Hall and Manchester Art Gallery. If you are off to The Lowry Theatre or the Outlet Mall, in Salford Quays, the tram will whisk you there in about 10 minutes from Piccadilly Gardens. Bury, with its attractions such as the East Lancashire Railway, its award wining Market and The Met theatre are only 30 minutes away. These services, coupled with the commercial buses routes and the national railway connections, make reaching and getting about the city very simple - Just remember to buy a ticket!
