Over the last 12 years, UnLtd India has empowered bold leaders to build innovative organisations and enabled them to reach their full potential.

This year, we doubled on our efforts to critically examine and systematise our work. We tackled challenges - both old and new - through strategic planning and team building. Our young team members brought fresh perspective to the table. The team came together to revitalise all the good things we had shelved and brainstormed to add to our support, to pave the way on how we nurture social entrepreneurship in the country. To me, it almost looked like version 2.0 for UnLtd India. At our annual flagship event, The Huddle, we introduced FunDating – a spin on the traditional speed dating format – where social entrepreneurs could meet funders and pitch their ideas. With over 20 funders and 55 organisations, it was a roaring success.

We revived our engagement with our alumni by hosting fun Friday evenings called aiSE Hi - a place to unwind, share stories, and exchange ideas. We tweaked our social impact assessment framework to better monitor our performance and measure our impact. We deepened our engagement on building the leadership skills of our entrepreneurs through a longer engagement within the purview of our much appreciated Leadership Development Program. We are thrilled to see the first results of our hard work. We have significantly built our outreach through social media that boldly proclaims our commitment to social entrepreneurs and showcases the courageous organisations we support. We are grateful to everyone who supported us this year – with particular thanks to our social entrepreneurs, our Board, advisory and lifetime members, support networks, funders, and strategic partners. Thank you for all you do to build a better world. We look forward to continuing to work together in 2019 and beyond.

ANURAG MANZIL MYSTICS

Sharad Patel, a farmer’s son from Mirzapur in the Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh started Badlav India a not-for-profit organisation that provides skill training and hand-holding assistance to beggars in Lucknow to start a dignified life. The organisation is working towards creating a belief system in beggars through behavioural therapy and a de-addiction process to move out from their current situations. They help them get access to social security schemes such as Aadhar Card, Ration Card, Pension Card as well as provide them with training to become skilled construction workers, masons, carpenters, plumbers, painters etc. Apart from the skill training, the beggars are also encouraged to start their own small scale businesses such as toy-making, candle-making, biofertilizer units, e-Rickshaws etc.

Manzil Mystics is a Delhi-based not-for-profit organisation that uses music as an instrument of social change. They host workshops on Gender, Spoken English, Reproductive Health, Menstrual Hygiene, and Life Skills through music in under privileged schools and communities. The organisation started the Learning Through Music (LTM) Program in 2012 that undertakes singing, writing and composing sessions in 50 + government schools, low-income schools and NGOs. They have set-up a unique livelihood driven initiative, as musicians from low-income communities are hired, intensively trained, and placed in schools to continue this virtuous cycle. They also organise community events cantered on socially conscientious music and produce music (writing, composing and recording) for colleges and corporates to promote social inclusion.

Mind Assets is a social enterprise that provides skill training and employment opportunities to persons with physical disabilities in Mumbai. Their mission is to create an inclusive and diverse work force and society. They ensure PWDs work as per their convenience – primarily work-from-home job opportunities or jobs that would require limited mobility. Each person is given access to online training modules to acquire skills such as social media management, graphic designing, etc. There are also classroom training modules for Banking and Finance. These training programs are 2 weeks to 3 months long depending on the course. Post-completion of the course, Mind Assets through its various partnerships with employers provides placement opportunities. They also support already skilled persons with disabilities.

Neelkanth Mishra set up Jaljeevika, a non-profit organisation that is the first of its kind, has introduced the concept of aqua-entrepreneurship that is creating an elaborate network of aquaculture enterprises in India. They have set up an ‘Open source fishery network’ to promote value chains and enterprises. Open source fishery enables all stakeholders in the ecosystem to network better, establish market linkages and collaborate for knowledge dissemination. The organisation brings key competencies such as natural resource management, livelihoods, and aquaculture to fishery cooperatives, farmer producer organisations and local NGOs to improve aquatic livelihoods. They are working in Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra to strengthen cooperatives, fisheries related farmer producer organisations, and women self-help groups.

Gyanada Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that is addressing the technology gap in schools through their Binary Program. Initially established to provide scholarships to girl students in Mumbai, the organisation realised that merely providing access to education was not sufficient. The program imparts relevant skills and provides practical exposure to students by introducing them to computer science. They believe in unleashing the thinking capabilities of a child through creativity, rather than an educational system that is grade driven. With a balance of practical and theory, the 3-year curriculum is designed to take students from level zero to possessing a working understanding of programming to continue at a tertiary level. The program also enables the current budding workforce such as engineering students to actively participate in teaching the children.

The organisation has successfully partnered with Micro Finance Institutions to increase its reach. For the first leg of the program, the Bijlee Box was installed in 18 households. After the feedback was incorporated, the product was upgraded and provided to over 100 households. Currently catering to households in Thane and Palghar, Sandeep plans to provide these solar services to people in North-East India. The organisation is in the process of filing two patents and aims to bridge the electricity gap between rural and urban in a period of just four years.

Connect. Collaborate. Celebrate. The Huddle is our flagship annual event that brings together our community of social entrepreneurs, funders, investors, and sector experts to share insights, exchange ideas & innovations.

Started in 2014 as an invite-only event, The Huddle 2018 saw over 200+ attendees from different sectors engaging in a rich exchange of information and insights throughout the day. This year, the theme for The Huddle was Connect, Collaborate, Celebrate. All the sessions were designed to help our network of social entrepreneurs and key stakeholders to explore different avenues to leverage connections, build new collaborations and celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit.

This year we introduced FunDating An opportunity for our social entrepreneurs to make an elevator pitch to potential funders and investors. There were 80+ social entrepreneurs who presented their ideas to over 25 funders/investors - making connections, providing valuable feedback, opting for mentorship, and laying the foundation for potential funding.

CoLabs Another new feature brought together practitioners, funders, and experts to discuss sectoral problems in Education & Skilling and Agriculture - identify the areas of collaboration, extent of each stakeholder's contribution and the advantages of such endeavours. Facilitated by Maneesha Chadha (J.P. Morgan India) and Ajit Kanitkar (VikasAnvesh Foundation) respectively, there was an audience of over 40 people for each 2-hour session.

Rapid Rounds There were brief sessions across topics such as Communicating Impact, Social Entrepreneurship – When life gives you lemons, Celebrating Notable Government Collaborations, and How to Crack Institutional Funding. These sessions enabled the audience to learn from success stories and participate in interactive activities that facilitated peer learning & insightful takeaways.

All in all,

Huddle 2018 celebrated the spirit of

UnLtd India.
