Welcome! to the Digital Arts Program at UNM Continuing Education We provide quality up-to-date curriculum in a variety of Digital Arts topics to meet your vocational needs. Our instructors are professionals in the fields they teach, providing valuable opportunities for networking and real-world experience. Pursue a certificate in the topic of your choice or just explore the classes that interest you. If you have prior experience or specific goals, customizing your certificate program is an option. Make an appointment for advisement, stop by to see our facility, or just register to get started. We are conveniently located on University Blvd, just north of Indian School, with free parking. The Digital Arts Program at UNM Continuing Education provides non-credit training in all aspects of digital arts. In addition, we are the only Apple Authorized Training Center in New Mexico. This course catalog provides general information about our Digital Arts certificate programs and classes. Parking Parking on our campus is free. If our parking lots are full, overflow parking is located at 1642 University Blvd NE, two lots north of our campus. Please refrain from parking in the business lots adjacent to our campus as your car may be towed or ticketed.

Policies Attendance and Grades One hundred percent attendance is required to receive a passing grade. If you must miss a class session due to an emergency, you may request to make up the class by emailing the program supervisor within two weeks of the missed class. You will then be contacted regarding make-up options. All classes at UNM Continuing Education are non-degree and non-credit. Classes are Pass/Incomplete; these grades are recorded on your transcript. Master certificates are issued after completion of a certificate program.

Customized Curriculum If you have prior experience or training in related topics, you may, at the department’s discretion, have the certificate program customized to meet your needs after a review of your portfolio or transcripts. Contact the program supervisor to schedule an appointment. Online Courses Online courses are available in many Digital Arts topics, offered in partnership with Ed2Go, Gatlin and SkillSoft. Because our online offerings are not exact equivalents to our local classes, they are not approved for a certificate program. For current online class options, please see our website.

Waiting Lists and Changes to the Schedule If a class you want is full, be sure to add your name to the waiting list. If enough people are interested, we may open another section. Register early to ensure a seat. Occasionally the dates and times of a class will change. Check the website for the most current class listings.

Tutorial Electives Our Tutorial Electives offer students extra help with a topic, exam preparation or portfolio building. If you’ve take a Digital Arts class and would like to schedule a Tutorial Elective, contact the program supervisor with your request. Some prerequisites and restrictions apply. The cost for a Tutorial Elective is $199.

Refunds and Discounts Your tuition, minus a $15 cancellation fee per non-credit course, will be refunded if a written request is submitted to us at ceregistration@unm.edu and received in the registration office 72 hours prior to the first class meeting. Transfers and electronic vouchers are also an option. Call the registration office at 505-277-0077 to ask about any applicable discounts.

Computer Labs Most of our Digital Arts computer courses are held in one of our dual-platform labs. For optimum employment opportunities, certificate students are encouraged to become familiar with and use both Mac and Windows platforms during class time.

Prerequisites and Course Options Prerequisites The prerequisites listed with the course descriptions are intended to prepare you for the next course. If you have prior experience with a topic, you may place yourself in the most appropriate class. For basic prerequisite course assessments, see page 56. Suggested courses are not required, but may enhance comprehension. Beginning Computer Courses Operating System Basics (51101/4101/11) or basic Windows or Mac OS experience is a prerequisite for all beginning computer courses in Digital Arts. Students with equivalent experience may waive this prerequisite. Equipment and Materials Most classes are supplied with all the necessary course materials. However, some classes may require that you purchase certain equipment or materials, such as a digital camera or specific art supplies. These requirements are listed at the end of the course description, on your class receipt or on the website. 4

Homework and Practice Time Most Digital Arts classes require homework or practice time. Projects created for classes are useful for portfolio building. For computer classes, we recommend three hours of practice for every hour in the classroom. Contact the program supervisor to schedule computer practice time, if needed.

Master Certificates Requirements There is no deadline for completing coursework for a master certificate. However, after two years, the requirements may change. Contact the program supervisor to ensure your requirements are up to date. Submissions To request a master certificate, email the program supervisor. Include your full name, mailing address, phone number, email address, certificate requested and a list of any approved changes to the curriculum. Projects in Digital Arts All Level II master certificate candidates are required to complete the Projects in Digital Arts course or an approved substitution. Projects students are also required to submit final computer files and/or printed samples of their project to the department for approval and potential display or publication. Those students who complete the Projects course will be placed on a job contact list.

Faculty Aaron Barreras, BS BS in Animation, Westwood University. Award winning animator, independent filmmaker, and designer, Aaron has over 16 years experience in high-end digital art and visual effects, and has been sharing his passions as a teacher for over a decade. He is currently the CG Technical Director at a New Mexico based production company specializing in animation and documentary films. Joey Belville, ACT Joey Belville is an award-winning music producer who has many national releases to his credit, several of them recorded in Logic Pro. He was an early adopter of computer based audio recording and has been using it on a professional level for over 10 years. Joey is an Apple Certified Trainer for Logic Pro.

Kevin Glasgow, BS BS in Graphic Design and Art Education from Eastern New Mexico University. Kevin has over 25 years experience as a graphic designer in both print and broadcast media. He currently works as creative director for a regional industrial supply company. Talia Kosh, Esq. JD and LLM in International Law. Talia practices law in Santa Fe, specializing in contracts, employment law, business law, nonprofits and personal injury. Talia is founder and president of New Mexico Lawyers for the Arts, counseling and educating artists on a wide variety of legal issues. Talia also serves on the Governor’s Counsel of Film and Media Industries and is the past chair of the Intellectual Property Section of the New Mexico Bar.

Pat Berrett, MBA MBA, UNM Anderson Schools. Pat has worked in commercial photography since 1980. His primary client base includes those in the arts, crafts, and performing arts. He also works with many high tech and emerging technology clients.

Kameron Kramer, JD BS in Chemical Engineering from Texas Tech University and a JD from University of New Mexico School of Law. Kameron is a licensed patent attorney who specializes in all types of intellectual property and business law. Kameron works at a small, local firm where he tailors his practice to assist artists and inventors and small to medium sized local businesses.

Ed Brandt, BA BA from Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois. Ed began his graphic design career in 1994 serving clients from various industries nationwide. Ed also enjoys the fine arts, working towards an MFA in painting. Combining passions for the visual arts and technology, he now shares what he’s learned with others through education.

Sean Lemons, BFA BFA in Computer Graphics from Central Missouri State University. Sean has 14 years of combined experience as an interactive systems developer with experience building and maintaining high-end web sites, kiosks, CDs, and multimedia software as well, with a background in graphic design, interface design, usability and accessibility issues.

Jeff Brody, BA BA in Anthropology from the University of Chicago. Jeff has over 25 years experience in information technology and software development. He currently owns his own consulting company specializing in application programming, website development and training for small businesses.

Marc Leonard, BS BS in TV/Film from DeSales University. From film to television, Marc has a broad experience base in the visual arts. As a filmmaker, he has seen many projects from conception to completion, giving him a strong sense of post-production workflows and solutions. Marc specializes in editing, visual effects, and color grading.

Virginia DeBolt, MA After a career in public education, Virginia embarked on a new career in technology, teaching web design classes and writing several books about web design, HTML, CSS and Dreamweaver. She is the Community Manager for a national web standards company.

Mary Ellen Merrigan, BA BA in Speech, emphasis Radio/Television, Northwest Missouri State University. Mary Ellen is president of a local marketing business and develops successful D.I.Y. (Do It Yourself) marketing strategies for a wide range of clients. Mary Ellen is certified in Social Media from VA Classroom and a graduate of SelfGrowth.com’s Social Media University.

Mary Elkins, BA BA in mathematics, AA in commercial photography. A lifelong fan of cameras and lighting gear, Mary has mastered the most complicated style of imagery—architectural and interior photography while working for a local photography studio. Mary specializes in digital techniques using Photoshop and Lightroom. Adele Gangai, BFA BFA in graphic design from Rochester Institute of Technology, New York. Adele has over 30 years of graphic design experience from working in advertising, newspaper, printing, animation and museum agencies. She has won several awards and was a contributor to the 2010 National Medal for Museum and Library Service as a graphic developer. Adele owns and operates her own graphic design business.

Marc Louis Mintz, MBA-IT, ACTC ACSP, ACHDS Marc is CIO of a local IT consulting and service firm. He is the only New Mexico member of the Apple Consultants Network to hold certification as both Apple Certified Technical Coordinator and Apple Certified Support Professional. In addition, he has produced award-winning graphic design and print advertising for Lexus, Infiniti, Toyota, Nissan, and Taco Bell, and is author of Practical Paranoia: OS X Security Essentials for Home and Business. Barak Naggan, ACT Award-winning adventure videographer/editor and stills photographer since 1995. Barak has traveled around the world shooting documentaries, worked as a cinematographer on short and feature films, and was the primary videographer for an aerial photography company. Barak has shot and edited video for the European National Geographic Channel and is an Apple Certified Trainer for Final Cut Pro.

Haley Norris, BFA BFA with an emphasis in photography and video from UNM. Haley also attended graduate school in Graz, Austria at Karl-Franzens-Universit채t focusing on Art History and German. Haley has been working professionally as a web developer, graphic designer, photographer, videographer, and multimedia editor for over 10 years. Currently she works on Kirtland Air Force Base as a multimedia specialist and Apple Certified Support Professional. Dan Noyes, BFA BFA from UNM with an emphasis in Photography. Dan has worked in printmaking for over 10 years. His artwork has been exhibited in the US and Canada and has been published in several publications, including Inquiring Mind and Remembering 9/11 Through the Eyes of a Printmaker. He has completed Public Art Commissions for the City of Albuquerque and Urban Forest. Caroline Orcutt, MA MA in Art from UNM, emphasis in Printmaking and Photography, minor in Art History. Caroline has over 30 years of experience in graphic design and digital arts. She ran her own business for many years and specializes in teaching graphic design. Caroline is the UNM Continuing Education program supervisor for Digital Arts. Anita Quintana, BFA BFA in Graphic Design, Eastern New Mexico University. Anita has over 30 years experience as a multimedia designer. She owns a graphic design business specializing in design and consultation for both print and web media. Anita is a regular contributor to the award-winning Revealed and Design Professional series published by Thomson Learning. Robert Reck, MA MA in Fine Art, UNM, emphasis in Photography with a minor in Art History. Robert is an internationally recognized architectural, interior design, and hospitality photographer with numerous books to his credit. He has held a staff photographer position with Architectural Digest for over 25 years, and currently serves as a board member of the NM chapter of ASMP. Joanne Schmidt, BM Bachelor of Music from Hardin-Simmons University. An award winning photographer and UNM Continuing Education Digital Arts graduate, Joanne owns and operates her own digital image business. She specializes in filmmaking and photo art created with High Dynamic Range techniques. Paul Simmons, BAFA BAFA in Computer Graphics from University of New Mexico. Paul has over 10 years of experience in graphic, web, multimedia and instructional design. He currently works creating multimedia training materials for the military. Doug Stine, MBA MBA, Santa Clara University. Doug Stine is a seasoned marketing and business professional with more than 20 years of experience in Silicon Valley, where he held senior positions in advertising and marketing. He has served as CEO/publisher of a local magazine and is currently account executive and director of new business development at a local marketing, public relations and advertising agency.

Brad Stoddard, ACT Owner of a local production and postproduction company, Brad produces, directs and is a picture editor with awards and credits in television, documentary and narrative film. Brad is an Apple Certified Trainer in Final Cut Pro and President of the New Mexico Post Alliance. Lisa Tannenbaum, BM Bachelor of Music from New England Conservatory of Music. An award-winning natural light digital photographer, Lisa owns and operates an online photography business. In addition, she has worked as a freelance web designer, specializing in search engine optimization and the arts, since 1998. Zac Van Note, BFA BFA in Graphic Design, New Mexico State University. Zac has over 20 years of experience in graphic design, web development and marketing communications. He has worked on a wide range of projects, including websites, user interface design, catalogs, magazines and tradeshow booths. He is currently a manager of User Experience and Multimedia Development at a Fortune 100 company. Barbara Waxer, MA MA in Computer Resources and Information Management from Webster University. Barbara brings three decades of experience in writing award-winning multimedia and copyright textbooks for Cengage Learning. She owns her consulting business, teaching copyright and finding media to educational institutions and nonprofit organizations.

Certificate Programs All Digital Arts programs are designed to prepare students for an internship, entry-level employment or business. Half-time to full-time students should be able to complete one master certificate in two semesters or fewer. A schedule of 12 or more classes in a semester is full-time. Six classes is half-time. Where applicable students are responsible for purchasing their own supplies. You may work on Levels I and II consecutively or concurrently. The shorter Basics certificates are designed for those who just need to get up and running quickly or those who want to get an idea of what the field is like. Courses in the Basics certificates also apply to the Level I certificates. Get started with just the basics or go directly to a Level I certificate for a more professional track. The number of hours required vary per certificate. Prerequisites are not included in the certificate hours. Full-time students should be able to complete one certificate in two semesters or fewer. Customized curriculum is also available. Apple/Mac The Apple certificates prepare you to operate, upgrade and maintain Mac computer systems at home or in the office. In addition, this training provides the basis for a professional Mac consulting and troubleshooting career. Take your Apple Certification exam with us. Graphic Design The Graphic Design certificates focus on professional design and production for printed and digitally published materials including brochures, newsletters, ads, books, interactive publications, etc. Web Design The Web Design certificates focus on building and maintaining professional and effective websites. Web Developer Build interactive, data driven websites using both client-side and server-side technologies. Acquire an understanding of database design and use, develop basic programming skills, and attain a solid foundation in the construction of websites. Instructional Media Developer Create rich materials for the classroom, including multimedia content for online learning. In conjunction with the Online Instructor certificate, gain an understanding of how adults learn in order to facilitate the planning and development of content that will enhance the learning process. Multimedia The Multimedia certificates focus on professional design and production for a variety of media including graphic design, web design, photography, film and motion graphics. Choose a design, photography or video concentration or a combination. Digital Photography The Digital Photography certificates offer professional training in creating, editing and manipulating digital photographs. Digital photography may be used in web design, multimedia, filmmaking, as a fine art medium or in commercial photography. Photography and Videography This combined certificate offers professional training in creating, editing and manipulating digital photographs and videos that may be used in web design, multimedia, filmmaking, as a fine art medium or in commercial photography and videography. Digital Filmmaking The Digital Filmmaking certificate provides training in camera and editing techniques, motion graphics, audio, animation and visual effects. Combine this certificate with Apple Certification in Final Cut Pro. Music Production Enter the world of modern music production with digital recording, editing and mixing techniques. Discover dynamite production solutions for music bed, soundtrack, hip hop, rhythm and blues, rock, electronic music creation and more. Learn how to promote and sell your own music. Combine this certificate with Apple Certification in Logic Pro. Apple Creative Professional: Video or Music Differentiate yourself to employers and clients as an Apple Certified Pro in video-editing or music production. Apple certification programs create a benchmark for assessing users’ proficiency in Apple’s professional applications. Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro are offered in partnership with Apple through our Apple Authorized Training Center. Social Media Expand your world by exchanging information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. Learn about social media, how to use it and what its impact is on marketing, public relations and communications. Adobe Series Master InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop or Dreamweaver with our Adobe Certificates. Begin with an overview class, and then move on to beginning through advanced classes in the Adobe software of your choice to become proficient in page layout, computer illustration, photo editing or web design with this leading industry-standard software.
