UNO Mavericks Give Back UNO’s New Food PANTRY The Maverick Food Pantry was created as a result of a meeting between concerned UNO faculty and staff discussing jarring news of UNO students going hungry. Upon further research, it was learned that approximately 25 colleges and universities have some sort of food bank located on their campus for student use. Food collection for this project began at UNO during new and transfer student orientation sessions. Students attending orientation were asked to bring a nonperishable food item to donate to the food pantry. Food that has been collected is currently being stored in the small room off of the Student Life office that formerly housed MavRadio.
Operational details are being finalized, and meetings have taken place with staff from the Omaha Food Bank and other charities in the area. These meetings provided the project with great insight into how a food pantry operation runs. Food collection will be an ongoing opportunity for students, faculty, and staff. Volunteers are needed to assist in the staffing and operation of the food bank. Students can volunteer their time to the project. It is a great opportunity to assist fellow students and members of the UNO community. The Maverick Food Pantry is already up and running. If you need access or want

Exciting times at UNO Dear Mavericks, Congratulations to all of the new students joining our family, and welcome back to all of the familiar faces. My name is Martha Spangler, and I am the Student Body President and Regent of the University of Nebraska at Omaha. My role is to actively represent you, the student body. We’re here at UNO at an exceptionally exciting time. With all of the big changes that have been made in the last few years, and all the big changes currently underway, this year is shaping up to be one of the best. I am looking forward to a successful year and for you to be a big part of it. There truly has never been a better time to be a Maverick. Here at UNO, we have almost limitless opportunities available to experience college life. I want you to make the most of your time here because being a Maverick is much more than burying your nose in a pile of textbooks. So, I encourage you to explore the various on-campus resources available to you and get involved. With over 100 student groups on campus, there are many different paths you can take. Each of these student groups gives you the chance to make lifelong friends and sharpen the skills you will need for your future endeavors. If you

As I said, my role and Student Government’s role, is to actively voice students’ opinions and concerns to UNO faculty, staff, and administration. MULTICULTURAL AFFAIRS IS COMMITTED TO YOUR ACADEMIC SUCCESS The Office of Multicultural Affairs (MCA) is dedicated to providing the support UNO students need to succeed in and out of the classroom. MCA has a variety of resources for all students to use. Through scholarship aid and academic and personal support, students are empowered to attain their educational and professional goals. From computer labs to resume support, from academic advising to opportunities for community outreach, MCA has what you’re looking for. Looking for a tutor? MCA staff can help you brainstorm ideas, prepare for an upcoming test, or review papers you’ve written.
The office also provides a quiet study space, a small but diverse library, and much more. In addition to office resources, MCA also offers a variety of programs and services to help you excel. MCA’s cultural and social justice programs provide events that can help you learn more about our differences and similarities, develop awareness, and become more culturally competent. The mission of MCA extends beyond our campus. Collaborative efforts within the university and throughout the greater Omaha metro area aid to ensure an inclusive environment where shared understanding is facilitated, knowledge is expanded, and appreciation for varied perspectives is cultivated. Seed Projects Come receive support and guidance for individuals to develop their own unique service projects. Resources are available to individuals, groups, and classes. Individual seed projects give students an opportunity to develop important skills.
YOU MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE OMAHA COMMUNITY There are so many opportunities available for students who are interested in volunteering for nonprofit organizations. The Office of Civic and Social Responsibility connects you with service projects through annual service days, individual student program development, and monthly volunteer opportunities. It’s easy for you to discover new interests, ignite your passions, and develop leaderships skills by becoming involved in the following: Signature Days of Service The university service days encourage UNO students and community members to learn about the issues we face as a community. The various service days give volunteers an opportunity to make a positive impact on social problems in Omaha. Also, service days provide you with opportunities to develop collaboration skills.

Wohlner’s Cafe in Mammel Hall The Wohlner’s Deli Cafe in the Mammel Hall Atrium is the only privately owned food service on the UNO campus. The café offers healthy snacks like fruit, string cheese, and granola bars; delicious baked goods including muffins and scones; and a wide variety of candy bars, microwaveable instant meals, and soft drinks. Wohlner’s also handcrafts a variety of fresh salads, sandwiches, and soups each day. Friendly service, student-focused hours of operation, menu variety, convenient location, and dedicated seating for 60 sets the Wohlner’s Deli Café apart from everyday on-campus meal options. STUDENT LIFE You may have heard some of the hype around UNO’s newest online resource, MavSYNC, but what exactly can it do for you? MavSYNC creates an online community where students can explore student organizations, fraternities and sororities, campus recreation, university departments, and community engagement opportunities on UNO’s campus in order to make getting involved a little easier.

MavSYNC has two general functions, one external and one internal. Externally, organizations and departments can use MavSYNC to promote events, resources, and reach out to students interested in getting involved on campus. Any student (yes, even you!) can easily browse through MavSYNC to see what organizations are out there to join. Internally, students who are already involved can easily manage their organizations by streamlining communication, collaboration, forms, and even event planning.

Don’t see a club you like? Start a new one. If you find yourself browsing through MavSYNC and can’t find the organization you are looking for, this is your chance to start one! As students’ interests grow, new organizations are being started every year. You can create yours in 3 easy steps: Assemble A Team New clubs need to start with at least 4 currently enrolled, UPF fee paying UNO students and 1 staff or faculty advisor. It’s super important that each student on your team has a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0 in order to qualify. Draft A Plan Your organization must have a constitution that outlines the terms and regulations of your club. Don’t worry, there’s an awesome template for a constitution available online via MavSYNC. Just download it and plug in your info. 4
Make It Official Once you’ve got your team ready and a game plan in place, log on to MavSYNC and fill out the “Register New Organization” form, available under “Organizations.” Once you submit your request, the Student Life and Leadership Development office will review it and contact you with the results. A New Era of Wellness On August 20th the Counseling Center moved from the Eppley Administration Building to the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Building marking a new era in wellness on UNO’s campus. With the move, the HPER building became the new Wellness Center: a place where Counseling, Health Services, and Campus Recreation are available under one roof. “It’s a transition that we were all extremely excited about,” said Joe Kaminski, the new Senior Director for Wellness. “All three departments have always worked closely together, but this provides a great opportunity to cater to UNO students and the community by offering services and programs in all aspects of wellness in a central setting.”

The Counseling and Health Services are now located in room 102 of the HPER building, and Campus Recreation is in rooms 104 and 204. The new Wellness Center also created “wellness indicators” to help students identify aspects of wellness that you should be familiar with: emotional, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational, physical, social, and spiritual wellness. Keep an eye out for these wellness indicators around campus to make sure you’re living a well-rounded college life.
