You were involved with Residence Hall Council (RHC) last year and are now the president? Why did you decide to get involved?

You were involved with Residence Hall Council (RHC) last year and are now the president? Why did you decide to get involved?

I knew I wanted to get involved and make new friends. I also really enjoy planning events. When the executive board met me, they really liked my personality and skill set and created a specific position for me. Last year I was the PR chair. I became the president this year to be even more involved and to gain more experience in management and leadership.

The resident assistant of my building, Emily Watkins, encouraged me to get involved last year, and I became a building representative. I wanted the leadership experience that RHC provides to students.

Maverick Village Residence Hall Council (MVRHC) President

What has been the biggest event so far this year and what future events are you excited for? Bingo Night had between 40-50 students in attendance. We have a Halloween night coming up this month. I’m also excited at the possibility of holding a staff appreciation week to recognize the University Housing team for all of their hard work that maybe goes unnoticed. Meeting times and event information are posted to MavSYNC. Why should students get involved with RHC? College is what students make of it. It’s hard to meet people or make friends if you aren’t involved. Getting involved with RHC is also a good opportunity to learn more about what you’re good at and potentially help you identify a career.

University Village Residence Hall Council (UVRHC) President

What has been the biggest event so far this year and what future events are you excited for? We had an event called “Pinterest Your Place” and it turned out to be a great event. I am excited for all the future events! Meeting times and event information are posted to MavSYNC. Why should students get involved with RHC? RHC provides students with opportunities for responsibility management and leadership experience. It’s also a great way for students to come together and have fun. I like seeing students have a good time and be happy!

NRHH HIGHLIGHTS The National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) is the premiere honorary advocating for the interests and welfare of residence hall students, while also providing opportunities for their personal growth and development. WHAT IS NRHH? The UNO Bill Pickett NRHH Chapter consists of student leaders living on campus who represent the top 1% of the student leaders within campus housing. An important value of NRHH is that of recognition. NRHH strives to provide recognition for individuals who have contributed to the advancement of college and university housing. One way NRHH recognizes the good work of those on campus is through a campus-wide Of The Month (OTM) Award submission. Any student, faculty, or staff member is welcome to submit a nomination for an OTM. Each month, NRHH leaders vote to determine campus winners to send on to be voted on at the regional level.

BAXTER ARENA FLUSH-OFF WINS REGIONAL OTM AWARD. READ AN EXCERPT BELOW OF THE OTM SUBMISSION: “Four hundred Mavericks made up of students, faculty/staff and alumni and one arena meet on September 28th for the Flush Off! The program started with recruiting students to participate in this once in a lifetime event... Students were required to sign-up using MavSYNC and explain why they are proud to be a Maverick.... During the weeks that students signed-up, Bill had his spirit coordinator designing posters, handbills and flyers to promote the event. The prepping for the actual event, didn’t stop there. Kelsey the Spirit Coordinator designed awesome credentials or participant passes for the day of the event that every person would get if they were participating. The athletic department designed shirts and members of Bills’ team set up a giant card board cut out of a toilet and wore toilet costumes to promote the event beforehand and at the event... The day of the Flush we had so many volunteers helping at each step from checking everyone in, giving tickets for the chance to win free toilet paper for a year, handing out t-shirts and even more Maverick swag! After everyone was seated in the arena, Bill drew the names of the five lucky students who would be winning free toilet paper for a year and then explained what the number on the back of each credential meant. Each credential had a number between 1 and 5, and the number corresponded with the area/section of the arena where they would flush a toilet. Bill had UNO volunteers and Baxter employees in each group, 1-5, guiding the participants since it’s new to everyone. Once everyone found a toilet in their area, Bill sounded the horn and everyone flushed! It was a success! We can proudly say the pipes work and are ready to go! After flushing a toilet, students got to eat food at the arena, took home a free roll of toilet paper, and left with lasting memories.” Submitted by Micaela Adam, NRHH Member

MAINTENANCE UPDATE This semester all Maverick Village hallways will be upgraded to LED lighting. New carpet will be installed in the Maverick Village Clubhouse, and the maintenance team will be replacing smoke detector batteries. SMOKING REMINDER Please be aware that this time of year there are dry leaves all over campus, and it is extremely important to only smoke in the designated areas and dispose of your cigarettes properly. Smoke stations are located near every building for your convenience.

MAINTENANCE ISSUES Students living in Maverick Village and University Village must complete an online work order request to have a non-emergency issue fixed. Work orders will be prioritized and addressed by maintenance staff. Do not fill out work order forms for emergencies. Contact the main office or the R.A. on-duty if you experience issues dealing with heat, air conditioning, water leaking, or safety.

Work orders should not be submitted for the following reasons: •

Internet (call Apogee support at 1.855.813.7018).

Cable (call Cox Cable at 402.315.1520).

Laundry (call ASI at 800.762.3452).

ANI’S ADVICE You moved away from home and now you’re responsible for keeping your own room clean, getting the laundry done between Netflix binges, and working with roommates to make sure the garbage goes out from time to time. It can get overwhelming (and stinky) pretty quick! Luckily, I have some advice on how to work out some of your cleaning concerns! 1. SCHEDULE A SET LAUNDRY TIME EVERY WEEK AND SET AN ALARM. Maybe its 3 P.M. on Wednesdays when you have two hours between classes, or 1 A.M. on Saturday night when you won’t have to fight for a dryer. Whenever you have a chunk of time every week, make it Laundry Time. Before long it will be a habit and you won’t have to keep buying new socks because all of yours are dirty….

2. USE A CHORE CHART. It can seem silly to meet with your roommates and create a chart for who does what and when, but it’s a quick way to make sure your common areas stay clean and also to make sure no one person is doing all of the work. Need help making one? Talk to your RA. They are experts!

3. CHECK-OUT WHAT YOU NEED. The clubhouse of your village has all sorts of things to check out (for free!). That includes a vacuum cleaner, mop and bucket, broom and dust pan, and even a clothes iron and ironing board! Don’t bother going and spending your Taco Bell budget on cleaning supplies you can rent for free!

I know cleaning doesn’t seem like fun, but put on some Pandora, grab a vacuum, and when your apartment is in order, I promise you will feel great too!

HOUSING REMINDERS CENTRALIZED BILLING

IMPORTANT REMINDERS

The University of Nebraska Omaha has a centralized billing system. You can access your bill via your MavLink account or a parent may be set up as guest to their account. Any charges incurred for tuition and fees and University Housing will appear on one statement. All other billing such as lock outs, damages, recores & other charges will be billed directly from housing to the student and will NOT be on MavLink.

Please make sure you are checking your MavLINK account. There are many residents that assume financial aid, scholarships, or loans covered housing costs, when in fact they still may owe something on their balance. It is important to check, even if you assume it has been paid. It is not our responsibility to track you down. You can check your own balance at any time.

Payments made for University Housing are applied to tuition and fees first on the centralized bill. Unpaid bills are subject to late fees. If you are awarded scholarships & financial aid it will be credited to your UNO Student Account and will be applied against your tuition, fees and housing. This is dispersed once in the Fall and once in the Spring. •

Important to know that all scholarships and financial aid that is applied to MavLink goes towards tuition and fees first and then is applied to housing. Make sure you are checking your MavLink regularly especially if you are on a monthly payment plan.

For questions related to charges or payments towards your housing on your centralized bill please contact Denise at 402.554.4000.

CANCELLATION POLICY If you need to cancel your contract please email unohousing@unomaha.edu with a request to cancel your contract. Please make sure you read the housing cancellation policy first. You can find the housing cancellation policy here. What if I need to cancel my residency, but it’s after August 1st? 1.

You would forfeit your $200 deposit for the administrative cancellation fee.

2.

You would be billed 50% of remaining balance of contract (based on the payment plan you selected and the day you cancel)

HOUSING PAYMENTS

You can access your bill via your MavLINK account. UNO has centralized billing which means that any charges incurred for tuition, fees, and housing will appear on one statement. Payments made on MavLINK are applied to tuition and fees first on the centralized bill. All other billing, such as lock outs, damages, recores, and other charges, will be billed directly to the student. Unpaid bills are subject to late fees. If you are awarded scholarships or financial aid, the amount will be credited to your student account and applied to your tuition, fees, and housing. This is dispersed once in the fall and once in the spring. It is important to note that all scholarships and financial aid that is applied to MavLINK goes towards tuition and fees first and then is applied to housing. Check MavLINK regularly, especially if you are on a monthly payment plan. For questions related to charges or payments towards your housing on your centralized bill, contact Denise at 402.554.4000. Housing payments may be made: 1.

Via MavLiNK with credit/debit cards

2.

By mail with personal check or money order. Payments should be mailed to: University Housing Attn: Business Manager 6608 University Drive South Omaha, NE 68182

3.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT Any student removed from campus housing for student conduct reasons will still be held liable for the terms of their contract. Violating student conduct policies does not provide students the ability to end their housing contract. Students looking to end their housing contract forfeit their $200 deposit for the administrative cancellation fee.

In person with check, cash, credit/debit card or money order. Payments can be made at Maverick Village or University Village front desk located in the clubhouse at each location or can be made at Cashiering/Student Accounts located in the Eppley Administration Building
