THE CHARTER OF THE UNITED NATIONS IS THE FOUNDING DOCUMENT OF THE UNITED NATIONS.

It was signed on 26 June 1945, in San Francisco, at the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on International Organization, and came into force on 24 October 1945.

The United Nations can take action on a wide variety of issues due to its unique international character and the powers vested in its Charter, which is considered an international treaty. As such, the UN Charter is an instrument of international law, and UN Member States are bound by it. The UN Charter codifies the major principles of international relations, from sovereign equality of States to the prohibition of the use of force in international relations.

Industrial Development Report 2024

Turning Challenges Into Sustainable Solutions: The New Era of Industrial Policy

United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)

The Industrial Development Report 2024 (IDR24) emphasizes the pivotal role the industrial sector plays in delivering sustainable development solutions, given its profound impact on economic, societal and environmental goals. Sustainable industrialization entails fighting climate change, promoting economic growth and generating millions of decent jobs while harnessing cutting-edge technologies. The report finds that every manufacturing job, on average, creates more than two jobs in other sectors of the economy. The manufacturing sector also significantly contributes to green innovation compared to other sectors, with 60 per cent of all green patents worldwide owned by industrial firms, despite representing a smaller share of the overall firm population. Accelerating sustainable industrial development is therefore crucial for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

World AIDS Day Report 2024

Take the Rights Path to End AIDS

United Nations

Titled “Take the Rights Path to End AIDS,” this report marks a pivotal moment in the global HIV response. Drawing on insights from the UNAIDS publication “The Urgency of Now,” it confirms that current strategies can end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Historic progress is noted—with HIV infections in 2023 at their lowest since the 1980s—yet the report warns that efforts remain insufficient to reach the 2030 target. Central to its message is the critical role of human rights in ensuring equitable access to HIV prevention and treatment services, addressing structural vulnerabilities, and eliminating discriminatory practices. Reinforced political will and a rights-based, person-centered approach are emphasized as essential for a sustainable and effective global HIV response. Subject: Public Health

World Investment Report 2024 Investment Facilitation and Digital Government

UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

Business and investment facilitation have become central to both private sector development and FDI attraction efforts of governments in developing countries. At the core are information provisions, transparency of rules and regulations, and streamlining of administrative procedures. Because these elements are information- and procedures-based, digitalization is central to effective implementation. They have thus led to a wave of digital government initiatives, including information portals and online single windows. Digital government has the potential to address many institutional challenges faced in developing countries, strengthening governance, reducing costs, improving services, and combating corruption. Because governance and institutional weaknesses are a key obstacle to attracting investment in many developing countries, digital government and the promotion of investment for sustainable development are closely intertwined.

Non-contributory Pension Systems in Latin America and the Caribbean: Towards Solidarity with Sustainability

United Nations

Examining the rapid expansion of non-contributory pension systems amid high levels of informal labor and ageing populations, this publication highlights a major milestone in regional social protection. In 2022, nearly 30% of people aged 65 and over were covered. Advocating a collective, rights-based approach centered on universal coverage, sustainability, and solidarity, it emphasizes that effective social protection is key to upholding dignity and ensuring well-being during old age. By outlining strategies to mitigate ageing-related risks, it calls for policy reforms to remove discriminatory barriers and reinforce the social safety net, thereby contributing to a more inclusive and equitable society.

Our Common Agenda: Report of the Secretary-General United Nations

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Member States came together to recognize that our challenges are interconnected and can be addressed only through reinvigorated multilateralism with the United Nations at the centre of our efforts. In response, the UN embarked on a process of reflection, engaging a broad array of stakeholders, including Member States, thought leaders, young people, civil society and the United Nations system and its many partners. This report provides a synthesis of key ideas that emerged during the reflection process and contains suggestions on how to take them forward. As COVID-19 has shown, our welfare, and indeed the permanence of human life, depend on us working together across borders and sectors to address major risks and achieve a set of vital common goals.

The United Nations Guide to Model UN

United Nations

Model United Nations (MUN) simulations are popular exercises for those interested in learning more about the UN. It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of students worldwide participate every year in MUN at all educational levels in schools and universities. Many of today’s leaders in law, government, business and the arts participated in MUN as students. Some MUNs however do not follow the actual rules and practices used at the UN. This guide is designed for students and teachers on how to organize and participate in MUNs that simulate the way the UN actually works.

2024 State of Climate Services

As climate change impacts intensify, the need for climate services to support mitigation, adaptation and increase resilience has never been higher. In the past five years, there has been progress in provision of this climate information for decision-making, but big gaps remain and investment lags far behind need. The State of Climate Services report says that in 2024, one third of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) provide climate services at an ‘essential’ level, and nearly one third at an ‘advanced’ or `full’ level.

The State of the World’s Children 2024

The future is now. The carbon we pour into our atmosphere today will shape the climate of the future. The technologies we develop today – and the policies we develop to govern them – will help shape how we learn, work and communicate. They will affect the well-being of our children. The demographic trends of today will help shape the population patterns of societies tomorrow. So, the future is now – we are laying its foundations today. It is important that we ask ourselves: What will the world be like for children in 2050?

DSA rates are intended to relate to good commercial hotels and restaurants at various locations for more than 250 cities around the world. An additional amount of 15 percent of the average hotel and meal cost is included in the DSA rate to account for incidental expenses. DSA rates generally relate to specific cities within the country. An “elsewhere” rate is also generally provided to encompass all remaining areas of a country. OTHER DATABASES

The Energy Statistics Database contains basic statistics for more than 220 countries/territories on production, trade, transformation and consumption (end-use) for solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels, electricity, and heat. It contains data in their original units (e.g. metric tonnes, GWh) as well as calorific values to allow interfuel comparison in a common energy unit (terajoules). Currently, the database provides time series for the period 1950-2021 and is updated annually.

THIS YEAR MARKS THE 80 TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE UNITED NATIONS.

Born out of the ashes of the Second World War, the organization was the result of a global commitment to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.” The founding of the UN also signaled a commitment to an entirely new level of international cooperation grounded in international law and the UN Charter

Today, the United Nations remains the essential, one-of-a-kind meeting ground to advance peace, prosperity and human rights. The UN works tirelessly to support countries as they tackle poverty, hunger and disease, while also supporting people in need during times of conflict and disaster.

The organization has advanced justice and fairness through international law and respect for human rights, while also pushing for peace through dialogue, debate, diplomacy and consensus-building.

Multilateral cooperation is the beating heart of the United Nations and the Pact for the Future, adopted in September last year, is aimed at rebuilding trust in multilateralism. Amid the profound challenges facing our world today, global solidarity and solutions are needed more than ever.
