1000 ACTIONS

FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

The 1000 Actions campaign is designed to inspire and mobilize the publishing sector and individuals to take concrete steps towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.  Turning the Page supports the UN campaign of  1 Million Actions for Our Common Future.

By the end of 2024, we want to celebrate 1000 new actions highlighted on the IPA SDG dashboard. Each action will represent a powerful initiative, project, campaign or report that will help demonstrate exactly how the publishing sector is creating a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous world for all of us. The campaign is open to all publishers and publishing organizations.

This campaign is part of the SDG Publishers Compact. The Compact features 10 action points that publishers, publishing associations and others can commit to undertaking in order to accelerate progress to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Signatories aspire to develop sustainable practices and act as champions of the SDGs.

The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2024

United Nations

This report outlines the impact of global crises on reaching the 2030 Agenda.

Learn which challenges we must overcome to achieve the SDGs.

The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2024 assesses progress toward the 17 SDGs, warning that current efforts are insufficient with only six years remaining until the 2030 deadline. The COVID-19 pandemic, escalating conflicts, geopolitical tensions, and climate chaos have severely impacted progress. Only 17% of the targets are on track, nearly half show minimal or moderate progress, and over one-third are stalling or regressing.

Global inequalities are rising, with 23 million more people in extreme poverty and over 100 million more suffering from hunger in 2022 compared to 2019. Per-capita GDP growth in half of the world’s most vulnerable nations is slower than in advanced economies. Health progress has decelerated since 2015, student skills have declined, and wars have displaced nearly 120 million people by May 2024. Environmental crises are worsening, with 2023 being the warmest year on record and global temperatures nearing the 1.5°C threshold. Greenhouse gas emissions and CO2 concentrations continue to rise.

Human Development Report 2023/2024

Breaking the Gridlock - Reimagining Cooperation in a Polarized World United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

This report explores innovative pathways for cooperation and tries to answer the question: How can we tackle growing inequality and other global challenges together?

Today, collective action on challenges ranging from climate change mitigation to peace and security is frustratingly slow or stymied altogether. Lack of trust and polarization--both associated with insecurity--exacerbate the gridlock. Shared, interlinked global challenges, like the pandemic and its recovery, are outpacing our willingness and our institutions’ capacities to respond to them. Why, despite all our riches and technologies, are we so stuck? How do we get unstuck? Is it possible to mobilize action to address globally shared challenges in a world that is intensively polarized? The 2023-2024 Human Development Report explores these issues and offers a platform for strategic discussion on how to move beyond narrow zero-sum thinking and support cooperation even as we have diverging interests and views. The e-book for this publication has been converted into an accessible format for the visually impaired and people with print reading disabilities. It is fully compatible with leading screen-reader technologies such as JAWS and NVDA.

Digital Economy Report 2024

Shaping an Environmentally Sustainable and Inclusive Digital Future

UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

The Digital Economy Report 2024 turns the attention to the environmental footprint of digitalization. The Report discusses environmental impacts along the life cycle of digital devices and information and communications technology infrastructure with regard to raw material extraction and processing, manufacturing, distribution; use and the end-of-life phase. The direct effects on natural resources, including transition minerals, energy and water, as well as greenhouse gas emissions and waste-related pollution can be said to constitute the “environmental footprint” of the ICT sector. There are also indirect environmental effects from the use of digital technologies and services in different sectors of the economy, and the Report includes a dedicated chapter on e-commerce. The report underlines the need to maximize the positive impact of digitalization while minimizing the negative impacts on environmental sustainability.

Report of the Inter-agency Task Force on Financing for Development 2024

Financing for Sustainable Development Report: Financing for Development at a

Crossroads

United Nations

This report finds that the world is facing a sustainable development crisis, and that financing challenges are at the heart of the crisis and imperil the SDGs and climate action. It notes that the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in 2025 will be a last chance to correct course if we want to achieve the SDGs by the 2030 deadline. It calls for urgently closing financing gaps through an investment push, for closing policy and architecture gaps to make the international financial architecture fit for purpose in a crisis-prone world, and for closing credibility gaps, translating rhetoric into action to rebuild trust in multilateralism.

Interwoven Lives, Threads of Hope - Ending Inequalities in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)

This year’s report takes the 30th anniversary of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development as an opportunity to reflect on how far we have come in achieving sexual and reproductive health and rights for all. While the report celebrates the significant gains made, it also considers who has been left out of that progress, arguing that a more equitable future for all requires a renewed commitment to empowering those furthest behind.

The United Nations World Water Development Report 2024 Water for Prosperity and Peace

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

Water nurtures prosperity by meeting basic human needs, supporting health, livelihoods and economic development, underpinning food and energy security, and defending environmental integrity. Water influences the economy in many ways, and global trade dynamics and market adaptations can have direct repercussions on the water use of regional and local economies. The water-related impacts of conflict are multi-faceted and often indirect, such as those linked to forced migration and increased exposure to health threats. Climate change, geopolitical unrest, pandemics, mass migration, hyperinflation and other crises can exacerbate water access inequalities. In nearly all cases, the poorest and most vulnerable groups are those that suffer the greatest risks to their well-being. The 2024 edition of the United Nations World Water Development Report calls attention to the complex and interlinked relationships between water, prosperity and peace, describing how progress in one dimension can have positive, often essential, repercussions on the others.

World Investment Report 2024

Investment Facilitation and Digital Government UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)

Business and investment facilitation have become central to both private sector development and FDI attraction efforts of governments in developing countries. At the core are information provision, transparency of rules and regulations, and streamlining of administrative procedures. Because these elements are information- and procedures-based, digitalization is central to effective implementation. They have thus led to a wave of digital government initiatives, including information portals and online single windows. Digital government has the potential to address many institutional challenges faced in developing countries, strengthening governance, reducing costs, improving services, and combating corruption. Because governance and institutional weaknesses are a key obstacle to attracting investment in many developing countries, digital government and the promotion of investment for sustainable development are closely intertwined.

World Wildlife Crime Report 2024

Trafficking in Protected Species

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)

This third edition of UNODC’s quadrennial World Wildlife Crime Report aims to provide a tool to assess and improve responses to this hugely damaging form of criminal activity. The present report covers trends in the illicit wildlife trade, analyses harms and impacts, probes driving factors, and takes stock of responses. Wildlife crimes are diverse and often devastating in their impact and consequences. They hamper conservation efforts, damage ecosystems, and contribute to undermining our planet’s capacity to mitigate climate change. They also infringe on the essential needs, income opportunities, and cultural rights of local communities, and corrode governance and the rule of law. Global recognition of this damage has grown steadily, and after two decades of concerted action, there is some cause for optimism. There has been tangible success against trafficking of some iconic species, while cross-border cooperation and criminalization of wildlife crime have both improved.

Fiscal

Panorama of Latin America and the Caribbean 2024

Fiscal Policy for Addressing the Challenges of Climate Change

United Nations

In 2023, the fiscal environment in Latin America and the Caribbean deteriorated due to global and regional microfinancial conditions. Fiscal deficits widened in Latin America as tax collection weakened due to lower demand and falling commodity prices. In the Caribbean, primary surpluses increased through spending cutbacks. Public debt remained high, and rising interest payments pressured fiscal accounts. Given low economic growth and the public sector’s crucial role in sustainable development, the report argues that it is essential to analyze fiscal policy’s role in addressing climate change. This edition of Fiscal Panorama explores the use of a carbon tax to finance major climate investments and quantifies public sector climate spending progress.

It covers intentional homicide in absolute numbers and rates, highlighting regional trends and victim demographics. The study explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on homicide trends and analyzes homicide typologies: criminal activity-related, interpersonal, and socio-political. A special section examines organized crime’s influence on homicide trends in Latin America and the Caribbean. Additionally, the study considers how megatrends like climate change, aging populations, inequality, urbanization, and technological shifts intersect with homicide rates. It also reviews the criminal justice system’s response to identify areas for improvement.

World Economic Situation and Prospects 2024

United Nations

The 2024 edition of the United Nations’ World Economic Situation and Prospects report comes amid stark global economic inequalities and high geopolitical tensions. While rich economies have largely bounced back from the COVID-19 pandemic, developing economies have lost ground. Many are drowning in debt, with more than a third at risk of crisis. Investment in climate action and sustainable development is falling woefully short. Hunger and poverty are on the rise. And growing divisions between countries and economies are preventing an effective response. As this report makes clear, 2024 is projected to be another tough year. Sluggish global growth is projected to slow further. Investment will remain weak. The debt crisis will continue to spiral, as debt service obligations reach new heights. Devastating conflicts and escalating extreme weather are bringing uncertainty and risk to the global economy.

World Population Ageing 2023

Challenges and Opportunities of Population Ageing in the Least Developed Countries

United Nations

This report examines the impact of global population aging on developing nations with high fertility rates, particularly in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. It explores the challenges and opportunities in harnessing the “demographic dividend,” where the working-age population grows faster than the total population, as outlined in World Population Prospects 2022. While Asian LDCs approach lower mortality and fertility rates, African LDCs are in the early stages. Case studies from two Asian and two sub-Saharan African countries analyze this demographic shift. The report offers policy recommendations for LDC governments to leverage the temporary increase in the working-age population for sustainable development and social inclusion.

Cultural Heritage Nexus with Terrorism

United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI)

SDGs:

This report explores the smuggling of cultural heritage, particularly antiquities, and its link to terrorism. Since the early 1980s, terrorist and insurgent groups have exploited cultural properties as a reliable revenue source. The trade of cultural property for weapons and money laundering has involved various actors from drug traffickers in Latin America to warlords in Africa and Afghanistan. Over the decades, instability and intrastate wars across North Africa, South America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East have fueled illegal trade and strengthened regional smuggling networks. These networks have expanded to profit from not only cultural artifacts but also arms, drugs, humans, and other contraband goods.

Our Common Agenda: Report of the Secretary-General United Nations

On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Member States came together to recognize that our challenges are interconnected and can be addressed only through reinvigorated multilateralism with the United Nations at the centre of our efforts. In response, the UN embarked on a process of reflection, engaging a broad array of stakeholders, including Member States, thought leaders, young people, civil society and the United Nations system and its many partners. This report provides a synthesis of key ideas that emerged during the reflection process and contains suggestions on how to take them forward. As COVID-19 has shown, our welfare, and indeed the permanence of human life, depend on us working together across borders and sectors to address major risks and achieve a set of vital common goals.

This guide is designed for students and teachers on how to organize and participate in MUNs that simulate the way the UN actually works.

ACT NOW FOR OUR COMMON FUTURE

The Summit of the Future is a high-level event, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future.

Effective global cooperation is increasingly critical to our survival but difficult to achieve in an atmosphere of mistrust, using outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities.

This once-in-a-generation opportunity serves as a moment to mend eroded trust and demonstrate that international cooperation can effectively achieve agreed goals and tackle emerging threats and opportunities.
