How to Use this Catalog

All Fall 2017 classes, events and tours are described under their respective categories listed in the Table of Contents, and are organized within each category by starting date. The At-a-Glance center section lists all of the semester’s classes, events and tours in chronological order, and gives the catalog page number where the full class description can be found. The At-a-Glance can be removed from the catalog, tucked in your purse or pocket and used as a daily reference. If you use an online calendar associated with your Gmail, Yahoo or Outlook accounts, you can add classes directly to your personal calendar from the online interactive calendar available at www.ollirenonews.info. Programs marked *PRQ* in the At-a-Glance require pre-registration to attend.

Pre-Registration: Any class, event or tour that requires pre-registration will have the necessary preregistration instructions printed just below the program description in the main body of the catalog. In consideration of other members who want the class, please pre-register only for those classes you feel sure you will attend.

Location of Classes: 6

Please see the maps on the inside back cover of this catalog for location and parking information. The catalog’s class descriptions specify the class location in bold capital letters. MOANA These classes will be held at our new facility at 604 W. Moana Lane. Check at the lobby desk when you enter the building to find out which classroom. REDFIELD These classes are held at the University’s Redfield Campus in south Reno. Check the lobby monitor when you enter the building to find out which classroom. OFF PREMISES These classes, events and tours are held at off-site locations. Directions will be provided either in the program description or with your confirmation notice after you have pre-registered and been accepted. For Classes Offered at Both OLLI Locations: • If the catalog shows the class locations separated by ‘OR,’ the identical program is being repeated at the second location and you may choose to go to one OR the other. • If the catalog shows the class locations separated by ‘AND,’ the programs are not the same in the two locations and you may want to attend all sessions. • OLLI programs begin on time. Please plan to be seated before the class starts to avoid interrupting the speaker and other attendees by arriving late.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute | Fall 2017 Catalog

Important Information OLLI Membership Privileges Members are encouraged to attend as many events and classes as they would like and can fit into their schedules. Members are welcome to bring a guest to one class session each semester. Special events and off-premises activities, such as hikes, nature walks and tours are limited to members only — no guests — unless otherwise specified in this catalog. OLLI membership runs from Sept. 1 to Aug. 31 each academic year. To sign up for membership, or to renew your current membership, please visit www.olli.unr.edu. OLLI has scholarships available for those who qualify. Please come to the OLLI Moana Office to complete a Scholarship Application in person.

Fees •

Except where additional fees are noted in course descriptions (for some special events and tours), all other classes in this catalog are included in your $55 OLLI annual membership fee (Sept. 1, 2017–Aug. 31, 2018) and require no additional payment. Books and supplies are not included in membership fees or scholarships. You may purchase these things as you choose, or in many cases, borrow them from the OLLI Library or from one of the local Washoe County libraries. Please note: If an additional fee is required for a class or a special event (as explained in its catalog description), we can accept credit cards and checks payable to the Board of Regents by the deadline listed. Sorry, but we cannot accept cash.

Pre-Registration Policies •

Because of high demand and limited space, pre-registration is required for some classes, events and tours. You must be a current OLLI member with your current year membership dues paid in order to pre-register for any such class or event. When a class or event requires pre-registration, that information will be clearly stated in the catalog description for the class. Please pay careful attention to the particular instructions for each class because they are all different. Pre-registration will close either when the stated pre-registration window closes, when the class is full or three days before the first session of the class. This gives instructors adequate time to prepare for the class.

More Forgotten Films to Remember

12

Presenter: Larry Coffman, OLLI member Forgotten films are those that are well-deserving of a second — or even a third — viewing, but seem to have been overlooked. Such films often are “indies” (from independent film studios) or were produced outside of this country. Films are chosen for their cultural, social or historical perspectives, and will be presented with informative introductions, follow-up analyses and lively discussions. The first selection will be from the silent era, the first three decades of cinema. Specific titles will be announced at the first meeting and on www.ollirenonews.info. MOANA: Wednesdays, Nov. 8, 15, 29; Dec. 6, 13 | 2-4:30 p.m.

Real life comes to the stage. The Realists rebel against the stodginess of the present theatre and insist art must be accurate. Here are the plays, playwrights and theatres that shaped the future using electric lighting as a key tool. Session 2: Inside Out: Truth is in Your Mind. What is truth? Suppose there’s no answer to that! The Non-Realists rebel against the stodginess of the present theatre and insist art must be felt. Here are the plays, playwrights and theatres that shaped the future using electric lighting as a key tool. (Wait! Aren’t they solving the same problem?) MOANA: Wednesday, Nov. 8 and Thursday, Nov. 9 | 10-11:30 a.m.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute | Fall 2017 Catalog

Hollywood Censorship Presenter: Jim Bernardi, Ph.D., professor emeritus, Department of Theatre and Dance, UNR, OLLI member During the 1920s, the Hollywood studios were rocked by several scandals that threatened to jeopardize the careers of once-popular stars. In an effort to placate critics and religious groups, the industry undertook several measures to ensure stars behaved in an exemplary way and the films they were presenting would not offend anyone. From 1934 until 1968, all Hollywood studios adhered to a Production Code that rigidly controlled the private lives of members of the movie community, damaging the development of film artistry and limiting discussion of adult themes. We will examine the justification for this censorship, explore the code as it was developed, and reveal the negative effects that it brought about. MOANA: Friday, Nov. 17 | 2-3:30 p.m.

Shadow Self in Modern Television Landscape Presenter: Karen Wikander, Ph.D., instructor, Department of English, TMCC In contemporary society, going to the “dark side” has become linguistic currency for making terrible moral choices (thank you, Darth Vader). However, what was initially presented as a forthright battle of good and evil tracing Joseph Campbell’s monomyth of the hero’s quest has become a nuanced discussion of postmodern morality, and some of the most beautifully complex interrogations of the soul are happening on television. We will cover a handful of narratives that present us with the battle of the self and examine our complicated relationship with good, evil and the worlds we inhabit. Narratives will include Twin Peaks, The X-Files, Justified and The Leftovers. MOANA: Monday, Dec. 4 | 2-3:30 p.m.

University of Nevada, Reno | www.olli.unr.edu

Re-Defining Retirement: Meaningful Engagement in the Second Half of Life Presenter: Jennifer Baker, Sanford Center for Aging, UNR Learn about the importance of meaningful engagement and volunteerism in the second half of life. Baker will share current data about the benefits of “actively aging” and give examples of community members in Reno who are challenging the stigmas often associated with getting older. Consider leading a more dynamic life by actively participating in our community. Baker will share a number of different ways OLLI members can both improve their quality of life and strengthen our community at the same time through volunteer service. MOANA: Thursday, Oct. 26 | 2-3:30 p.m.

The Neuroscience of Aging Presenter: Alexandra N. Scurry, Ph.D. candidate, UNR Our sensory systems provide us with necessary information that allows us to perceive and navigate in the natural environment. Throughout our lifespan, the way in which we process various types of sensory information can change dramatically and alter how we interpret the world. Understanding these changes better can help us cope with aging. Learn how our brains receive and interpret sensory information throughout our individual lifespans. We also will discuss how various age-related diseases, such as hearing loss, can alter our perceptions and the activation of certain sensory areas in our brain. MOANA: Thursday, Nov. 2 | 2-3:30 p.m.

HISTORY It’s a Verdi Thing Presenter: Barbara Ting Verdi, Nevada, was once a booming lumber town with a growing social community and local businesses, including hotels, bars, schools and churches. Verdi had numerous fires but always came back from the ashes. The town was known for the Verdi Lumber Co., the Box Factory, Inyo Marble Works, Essex Ice Co. and multiple ranches, including the Donner Trail Dude Ranch. It is now a growing community known for its bike and hiking trails, the Lincoln Highway, Emigrant Trail and the Railroad. MOANA: Tuesday, Oct. 3. | noon-1:30 p.m.

Genealogy — Interest Group

32

Facilitator: Rosie Cevasco, OLLI member What makes learning about family history so fascinating? In a world that seems ever more rootless, tracing our genealogy leads to a sense of connection with the past and a deeper understanding of who we are now. Diving into family history can be an amazing adventure — one in which the learning never ends. Whether you’re a genealogy novice just looking to learn more about your ancestors or the meaning of your last name, or a more experienced researcher wanting to explore new horizons, you’ll find a wide variety of lessons, tutorials, case studies and other guidance to help you on your way. For more information, contact Rosie Cevasco at rosie@cevasco.us. MOANA: Fridays, Oct. 6-Dec. 15 | noon-1:30 p.m. (See At-a-Glance for specific dates.)

History of Sparks Presenter: Joyce Cox, OLLI member The story of Sparks and the surrounding area will be told through historical photos from the new book Images of America: Sparks. Photographs of Glendale, one of the earliest settlements in the Truckee Meadows, show early life in the area. The new railroad town became East Reno or Harriman and, finally, Sparks in 1904. Photographs show how Sparks grew almost overnight to become the fifth largest city in Nevada. MOANA: Wednesday, Oct. 11 | 10-11:30 a.m.

Aviation’s Early Pioneers Presenter: Roger Collins, MBA, OLLI member The Wright Brothers’ first flight in 1903 opened the eyes of the world to business opportunities in aviation. Some wanted to build airplanes, others eyed entertainment, air mail and eventually carrying passengers. Many of these early entrepreneurs were intertwined in a small, close-knit community. Although several faded away, others are names we recognize today. We will see who they are and briefly note Nevada’s limited role in early aviation history. REDFIELD: Thursday, Oct. 12 | 2-3:30 p.m.

Reno’s Chinatown Presenter: Edan Strekal, M.A., project archivist, Special Collections and University Archives, UNR Like other mining and railroad towns in the American West, Reno had a Chinatown that originated with the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. Once the work was finished, displaced Chinese laborers who had worked their way over the Sierra Nevada and into the Truckee Meadows were paid off and left along the tracks. Almost immediately, those Chinese built a bare-wood shantytown along the Truckee River out of any available materials. Find out where Reno’s Chinatown was located and what is there today. REDFIELD: Friday, Oct. 20 | 2-3:30 p.m.

Aurora: Boom and Bust of a Nevada Mining Town Presenter: Fred Frampton, OLLI member In 1860, gold was discovered in Aurora, Nevada. The population peaked at 5,000 in 1863, but failed mines led to a rapid decline, and by 1865 only a few hundred people were scratching out a living. It is an archaeological site today. Learn about life in this frontier mining town, utilizing historic photos and descriptions from Mark Twain and other historic figures. MOANA: Wednesday, Oct. 25 | 10-11:30 a.m.

The Spanish-American War Presenter: Michael Brodhead, Ph.D., professor emeritus, Department of History, UNR, OLLI member In the 1890s, America — along with other nations — experienced a wave of nationalism, which fed into a clamor for overseas expansion especially voiced by Civil War veterans who believed the soft youth of the day needed to be toughened up. With this was a hope that a “man on horseback” would emerge and lead America to glorious things. We went to war with Spain, a declining power, ostensibly to ensure the independence of Cuba. The United States was ill-prepared but able to conquer the Spanish forces quickly. The peace treaty provided for an independent Cuba and the cession of Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Guam to the United States. What did the war achieve? MOANA: Wednesday, Oct. 25 | noon-1:30 p.m.

Eleanor Roosevelt: America’s Foremost Female Political Figure of the 20th Century

34

Presenter: Richard Siegel, Ph.D., professor emeritus of political science, UNR, OLLI vice president Between 1933 and 1963, Eleanor Roosevelt usually was voted America’s mostadmired woman. What did she accomplish to earn this accolade? We will review her roles as first lady, as a Democratic Party leader and as the chairwomen of the UN Commission on Human Rights. We will explore a life that had some mysteries and unique experiences; a life that was amazingly private and public. REDFIELD: Tuesday, Oct. 31 | noon-1:30 p.m. OR MOANA: Monday, Nov. 6 | noon-1:30 p.m.

WWI: Centennial of 1917 Presenter: Neal Ferguson, dean emeritus, College of Extended Studies, UNR, OLLI member Learn about the major political, military, and economic events and trends of the Great War in 1917. Topics will include the first and second Russian Revolutions of March 1917, the continuation of the Allied offensive strategy on the Western Front resulting in the French mutinies and the disastrous battle of Passchendaele, the French military command crisis, the pacifist movement in Britain, German ersatz industrial production, submarine warfare, the entry of the United States into the war, the Italian front at the Battle of Caparetto and the war in the desert. We also will discuss the increasing use of newer technologies, including tanks and airplanes. MOANA: Wednesdays, Nov. 1, 15, 29 | 10-11:30 a.m. Osher Lifelong Learning Institute | Fall 2017 Catalog

Chautauqua — Hanging Judge Parker Presenter: Doug Mishler, Ph.D., part-time faculty, Department of History, UNR Isaac Parker was known as the hanging judge who hung more than 78 men as he tried to bring law and order to the extremely wild Oklahoma Indian Territory from 1871 to 1891. He was a man of powerful opinions and hard edges with a biblical sense of strength who was the model for Western movie judges in films like True Grit and Hangʹem High. His story is one of the Old West at its wildest. REDFIELD: Thursday, Nov. 2 | noon-1:30 p.m. OR MOANA: Thursday, Nov. 16 | noon-1:30 p.m.

Fort Churchill Archaeology: From Artillery to Zeus Presenter: Eugene Hattori, Ph.D., curator of anthropology, Nevada State Museum Archaeological excavations took place at Fort Churchill, Nevada, a military fort occupied during and after the Civil War, now a state park and National Historic Landmark. Although the collection of artifacts was analyzed, not much information made its way to the public until the collection was “rediscovered” and re-analyzed to uncover the lives of officers and enlisted men living in this isolated fort. MOANA: Monday, Nov. 6 | 10-11:30 a.m.

Fremont and the Cannon Presenter: Jim Bonar, M.Ed., OLLI member Hear the lively story of Lt. John C. Fremont’s third trip to California through Nevada and the historical importance of the Fremont Cannon to Nevada. Presenter: Dennis Dworkin, Ph.D., professor and chair, Department of History, UNR In recent European history, there have been few eruptions that compare to Brexit. We will examine Brexit in its historical context, considering the historical relationship between Britain and Europe as well as the rise of English nationalism, which must be seen in relationship to the rise of multicultural and multiracial Britain. How Science Sometimes Doesn’t Work … Until it Does! Presenter: Ed Oakes, geologist, OLLI member Science tries to explain the true nature of everything. In its simplest form, science is a process that pursues truth by gathering isolated facts (not “alternative facts”) and assembling them into coherent theories. But truth can be slippery. What was scientifically true 25 years ago may no longer be true today, and today’s scientific truths might not be true 25 years in the future as more and better data is gathered, sometimes forcing existing theories to change. This is the self-correcting nature of science. Scientists themselves can impede scientific progress because of egos and deep-seated beliefs. We will look at examples of how science sometimes doesn’t work until the weight of data becomes so overwhelming that theories, egos and beliefs are trumped. REDFIELD: Friday, Nov. 3 | 2-3:30 p.m. OR MOANA: Tuesday, Nov. 7 | 2-3:30 p.m.

What progress was made on the project until 2008? What events since then have implications for a project revival? Although nearly universally opposed by Nevada’s Congressional delegation over the years, there is some current interest in reviving the project. Events impacting this possibility are the momentous 2011 Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown, the increasing cost of nuclear power generation relative to solar, wind and natural gas, and the development of on-site storage of nuclear waste. OLLI Scholarships Available The Helaine Greenberg Scholarship Fund was created by Helaine S. Greenberg, who believes educational opportunities are as important for older adults as they are for young people. This is a one-time scholarship that may be granted for one year of membership only. The OLLI Scholarship Fund is available as part of our Bernard Osher Foundation endowment. Individuals may apply for this scholarship the year after receiving a Helaine Greenberg scholarship and may continue to apply each year thereafter. OLLI Scholarships are available for membership dues, transportation to and from OLLI classes, and events or tours that require an additional fee. Through a very generous donation from a current OLLI family, an OLLI Transportation Fund also has been established to provide additional assistance for those OLLI members who are unable to drive to OLLI for classes. A limited amount is available each year, so apply early if this is something you need. The OLLI Transportation Fund supplements our Transportation Assistance Scholarship Program that offers CitiLift/RTC Access and senior bus passes. If you would like to apply for any OLLI Scholarship, please visit the OLLI Moana Office and request a form. 51
