How Sparks Became Sparks Presenter: Donald Abbott, photographer and board member of Sparks Museum Sparks came to life in quite an unusual way. It was a custom-made town, tailor-ordered by the Southern Pacific Railway. In 1902, there was nothing but swampland and ranches. Southern Pacific made a startling offer to its Wadsworth employees: A tract of land would be laid out next to the roundhouse, and the railroad would give everyone a clear deed to a lot. The railroad offered to pack up every house in Wadsworth and ship it to the new town, free of charge. Sometime during the summer of 1903, a drawing was held with the employees' names in one hat and lot numbers in another. Sixty-seven lots changed title that day, at a price of $1 per lot. Sparks was born. Donald Abbott, an avid photographer, will show some of his photos.

The play centers on two characters, Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III. Using the epistolary form sometimes found in novels, they sit side by side at tables and read the notes, letters and cards — in which over nearly 50 years, they discuss the hopes and ambitions, dreams and disappointments, victories and defeats — that have passed between them throughout their separated lives. "Gurney's finest work, and one of the four or five best American plays in the '80s." — Time, "A mini epic. . . Dialogue this fine can speak for itself." — USA Today.

Mystery Book Movie: Insomnia (2002)
Presenter: Kenn Rohrs, OLLI member Sent from the city to investigate the murder of a teenage girl in a small Alaska town, a police detective (Al Pacino) accidentally shoots his own partner while trying to apprehend a suspect. Instead of admitting his guilt, the detective is given an unexpected alibi, but this "solution" only multiplies the emotional complexity and guilt over his partner's death. He's also still got a murder to solve, in addition to the blackmail and framing of an innocent bystander being orchestrated by the man they were chasing. There's also a local detective (Hilary Swank) who is conducting her own personal investigation of his partner's death. Will it all come crashing down on him?

What Will Tomorrow’s OLLI Look Like? You decide. When you make a planned gift to the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Nevada, Reno, you integrate your financial goals with your personal goals to help shape the future. The generosity of the Bernard Osher Foundation has helped to make our OLLI what it is today, but there still are areas of need. If you appreciate how OLLI enriches your life, follow the lead of other OLLI members who have established scholarships or given to the OLLI program of their choice. Your gift will make a difference.

Planned gifts can be made using many different kinds of assets, including cash, stock, qualified retirement account assets, real estate, insurance policies, and even artwork or business interests. If OLLI is already in your estate and financial plans, thank you for including us! Please let us know of your intentions because it helps OLLI plan for the future. Once you’ve notified us of your plans, you’ll be invited to join the Nevada Legacy Society, our honorary society for planned giving donors. Recognition of your gift can encourage others to do the same. However, should you prefer to remain anonymous, your gift plans will be kept confidential.
