Economic & Social Development Arab Integration: A 21st Century Imperative (ESCWA) Press Kit and the Summary: http://www.escwa.un.org/information/pubaction.asp?PubID=1550 Full Report: http://www.escwa.un.org/information/publications/edit/upload/E_ESCWA_OES_13_3_E.pdf

Inclusive economic integration in the Arab region would create six million new jobs by 2020 and increase regional gross domestic product by three per cent, the United Nations reported on 25 February 2014 arguing for a unified model like that of the European Union or other regional economic blocs. The report examines three pillars. The first pillar is political cooperation for good democratic governance in the Arab world. The strategy’s second pillar centres on deepening economic integration by completing the implementation of existing agreements. The third pillar - is cultural and educational reform. Without that transformation, development will remain a dream in a world where knowledge draws the line between wealth and poverty, between power and impotence, and between success and failure.

-3Building Natural Capital: How REDD+ Can Support a Green Economy (IRP / UN-REDD Programme) Report: http://www.un-redd.org/portals/15/documents/IRPBuildingNaturalCapitalthroughREDD March2014finallowres_EN.pdf Infographics: http://www.un-redd.org/IRPReport/tabid/132330/Default.aspx#infographics Facts and figures: http://www.unep.org/pdf/REDD_and_Green_Economy_factsheet_and_recommendations.pdf

The report outlines how integrating REDD+ programmes into a Green Economy approach can conserve and even boost the economic and social benefits forests provide to human society. An investment of US $30 billion per year - under 7 per cent of the US $480 billion paid in annual global fossil fuel subsidies - in the REDD+ forest conservation initiative can accelerate the global transition to green and sustainable growth and ensure the long-term well-being of tens of millions in developing countries. The Global Land Cover SHARE database (GLC-SHARE) http://www.glcn.org/databases/lc_glcshare_en.jsp The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) launched on 17 March 2014 a new database which gathers under one roof previously scattered information about land cover – how much land is covered by croplands, trees, forests, or bare soils – crucial to establishing a good global understanding of the physical characteristics of the Earth’s surface . UNFCCC -- 20 Years of Effort and Achievement Key Milestones in the Evolution of International Climate Policy http://unfccc.int/timeline/ Friday, 21 March 2014 marked the 20th anniversary of the entry into force of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. To mark the anniversary, the secretariat has prepared an interesting, informative and fun timeline. The report further reveals that places where people do not have adequate access to water largely coincide with those where people have no electric power.

Human Rights Report of the independent international commission of inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic (A/HRC/25/65, 12 February 2014) http://undocs.org/A/HRC/25/65 Widespread attacks and sieges on civilian areas in Syria by pro-Government forces are leading to mass casualties, malnutrition and starvation, according to the latest report of the independent international Commission of Inquiry on the Syrian Arab Republic, presented to the Human Rights Council on 18 March. For the first time, the Commission has also identified specific non-State armed groups that have committed torture as a crime against humanity in Al-Raqqah governorate. According to the report, the Security Council has failed to take action to end impunity. “Such inaction has provided the space for the proliferation of actors in Syria, each pursuing its own agenda and contributing to the radicalization and escalation of violence.” The report calls on States that exert influence on the parties in Syria to ensure that these parties comply with the rules of international humanitarian law.

Humanitarian Affairs Under Siege: The devastating impact on children of three years of conflict in Syria English, French & Spanish: http://www.unicef.org/publications/index_72815.html Syria’s children are living today through the most damaging conflict for children in the region’s recent history. More than 5.5 million Syrian children now see their future besieged by war. It is estimated there are up to one million children who live under siege and in hard-to-reach areas that UNICEF and other humanitarian partners cannot access on a regular basis. This report takes stock of the impact that three years of violence and rights violations have had on children, and it assesses the longer-term crisis facing the region.
