Up to 15 percent of all women who give birth suffer life-threatening complications that, in most cases, can be treated with emergency obstetric care. One of the key factors in reducing maternal mortality worldwide is making emergency obstertic care available to all women. However, resources are not always made available to protect the lives of mothers. As a result, 1000 women die each day from complications during pregnancy or childbirth. NO WOMAN, NO CRY's character-driven storytelling puts a face behind these troubling statistics. Shot over the course of a year in four countries, the film puts audiences in the footsteps of a Maasai woman who must walk five miles, while in labour, to a clinic with no electricity; a young pregnant woman in the slums of Bangladesh who is too ashamed to seek care; a pregnant OB in Guatemala who helps women who have suffered from botched illegal abortions; and a midwife in central Florida who treats uninsured women who are denied appointments elsewhere. Along the way, the film introduces audiences to the tireless and devoted healthcare workers, doctors, nurses, midwives, community health volunteers, who are going above and beyond every day to save women’s lives.
