Invitation Press briefing on the humanitarian situation in Iraq Tuesday 19 January 2016 The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) cordially invites you to a press briefing on the humanitarian situation in Iraq, with the UNHCR Representative in Baghdad, Mr. Bruno Geddo. Background Ten million people, including more than three million Internally Displaced Persons, require humanitarian assistance in Iraq as a direct consequence of violence and conflict in the country. Over the last two years, the take-over of territory by the Islamic State (IS) and the counter-insurgency operation launched by the Government and its allied forces have significantly increased pressure on the civilian population. Mr. Geddo will be in Brussels for a set of high-level meeting with EU institutions on the humanitarian situation in Iraq. Bruno Geddo Bruno Geddo has been working with UNHCR in humanitarian operations in Africa and the Middle East for over 25 years. Before joining the Iraq Office, he has represented UNHCR in Mauritania, Yemen, Somalia and Central African Republic. Previously, he also served as protection and legal expert in South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania and the UNHCR Headquarters. Bruno Geddo was born in Italy in 1959.
