Okay, the Strzelecki Track namely from Innamincka to Merty Merty is open but there are a few sections which require caution. There is roadworks at the Della Road Intersection. Detours are also in place as well as speed restrictions. So please, slow down and have some respect for the conditions. Otherwise everything else is open and accessible from the reports we have.”

OF THE WOODS? VICTORIA
Bogong High Plains Road is closed between Falls Creek and the Omeo Highway until the start of November. This also applies to Dargo High Plains Road, which is also expected to reopen at the start of November. Another seasonal road closure in place is Donna Buang Road heading towards the Badger Creek area. Mt Difficult Road is living up to its name, and is closed between Wartook Road and Boroka Lookout, as recovery works are in progress. The good news is, once these roads and tracks are open, it’s time to explore the High Country in summer.
NORTHERN TERRITORY
Bagot Road outbound between Totem Road and McMillans Road is restricted to access due to emergency road resurfacing between 8pm and 6am. If travelling through this area, be sure to take care and respect road workers. Broadarrow 4WD Track is closed between Wickham 4WD Track and the Buntine Highway intersection. Park facilities in the area are also closed, so make alternative plans if visiting the area.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA
Fitzgerald River National Park road conditions have been updated; with Hamersley Drive open yet being an unsealed road, take care if conditions change. Hamersley Beach and dune track are open to high-clearance 4WDs only, yet as always lower your tyre pressures to suit. There is still water at the Phillips River water crossing too, so please don’t attempt to drive it without investigating it first. Lennard Track in the Wellington National Park is now open, however the jump-ups are still closed and not accessible to 4WD vehicles until remedial works are completed.
NEW SOUTH WALES
Several roads and tracks have been affected by recent flooding in the Central Darling Shire. These include Cobb Highway from Wilcannia to Ivanhoe, Menindee to Wilcannia and Wilcannia to Tilpa. Roads are also closed from Ivanhoe to Balranald, Cobar and Trida. It is probably best to avoid the area until the flooding subsides and roads are reopened. On the Coffs Coast, Warrell Creek on the Pacific Highway between Scotts Head Road and Bald Head Road is experiencing alternate road conditions thanks to a rock-blasting operation which is being conducted.

With warmer months just around the corner it’s only natural to want to load up your four wheel drive and hit the beach. We all know that lowering tyre pressures will get you further in the soft stuff, yet how much thought have you put into the equipment required to pump your tyres back up to road pressures? If you don’t have an air compressor, it must be said a quality unit is something you (as a four wheel driver) will use time and time again, and in reality should be one of the first purchases you make for your vehicle (after a quality recovery kit). For this reason alone, we thought it was about time to test the topselling portable air compressors available on the market, and determine which is the most suitable compressor for your needs. THE TESTING METHOD
All compressors were required to inflate five 31-inch tyres (an extremely common size) with each tyre timed for inflation to 30psi, rather than try and break each compressor with a torture test. After all, this is how you would be using these compressors at home! Special interest was paid at the final tyre, which should have taken the longest due to the compressor getting hot. Speaking of heat, we used an infrared thermometer (heat gun with a laser, basically) to measure how much heat each compressor produced during the test‌ LOTS as it turns out! It was also interesting to check which part of the compressor was the hottest, and in many cases it was the cylinder head.
Once we had assessed the data from each compressor, we picked the three top-performing air compressors, and put them in a three-way shootout. The test for this was based around inflating a 37-inch tyre (well, 36.4-inch to be accurate) on the Iveco Daily 4X4 we had in the Unsealed 4X4 garage. This vehicle was also used to power each compressor with the engine running naturally. We allowed these three topperforming compressors five minutes alone with this huge tyre, to see just how much air pressure they could produce in the set time. The results were extremely interesting, to say the least.
To ensure accuracy, we had a second hole drilled in each test rim, with a second tyre valve installed. We used the Tyre Dog tyre pressure monitoring system to keep tabs on tyre pressures, as this allowed for accurate pressure readings without having to stop the compressors or take a separate reading (which could have allowed air to escape and in turn provided varying results). LOOKALIKES… WHAT’S THE GO?
One thing we noted was how similar many compressors looked in appearance. The offerings from Ironman 4X4, Ridge Ryder, Repco, Tigerz11, Mean Mother Adventurer II and DR Air all on first glance seemed to be twins. We were extremely interested in the results of these units, to see if they actually performed similarly or just had an identity crisis. This is especially relevant considering there is a fair bit of money separating the cheapest from the most expensive of this design ($140-$319). It is a bit sad to see, truth be told, that there is a real lack originality in this sector design-wise. However, our test results did highlight that there in fact varying results when it came to the overall performance of each compressor. The plot thickens!

NOTABLE EXCLUSIONS There were a few major players who opted out of this compressor comparison.
A big surprise was Terrain Tamer who declined, however their reasoning was valid. They are re-engineering a new compressor, which is due for release next year, and have decided to stop pushing their old model until the new unit is ready. Stay tuned however, as we will be putting that compressor through its paces once released. Two other companies you might have thought would be included, TMAX and Projecta, are no longer
bringing compressors into the country. The units you see for sale on on-line auctions websites are either grey imports or old stock. So in fairness to these companies, we will have to wait until they are selling compressors again. We also decided against including engine-driven compressors such as Endless Air, as these will only fit a certain number of vehicles (making them more of a specialised product). If we base the results off the compressor with the fastest time at the fifth tyre, the clear winner in terms of outright speed is the ARB Twin Compressor; followed
by the Mean Mother Adventurer II; and in third place the Ridge Ryder Ultimate. These three compressors progress to the next round, which we have dubbed ‘five minutes alone with a 37-inch tyre’.

CONCLUSION
Well, I guess it’s not terribly hard to believe the most expensive portable compressor tested, which featured a twin-head design and a largish external air tank, would be the best performer. Another point worth mentioning with the ARB unit, is thanks to the inbuilt air tank, it can in fact run a variety of air tools such as rattle guns. But at nearly $900, it would want to be the best! If money is no hesitation though, I would have no issue recommending the ARB Twin Compressor as being the best
performing portable air compressor on the market.
If you find it hard to justify spending that much on an air compressor, it would be hard to go past the Mean Mother Adventurer II, followed by the Ridge Ryder Ultimate from Supercheap Auto, which are both priced at $299, nearly one-third the price of the ARB unit. Arguably, Tasmania offers some of the most diverse 4X4 tracks in the country and whether you’re into combining your four wheel driving with camping, glamping, hiking, fishing or simply want the adrenalin that only an off-road challenge can bring, then here are some options to consider. So get out and try some of these terrific little tracks, all of which lie within a day’s drive from Hobart. SOUTH BRUNY ISLAND – BETWEEN CLOUDY BAY AND ADVENTURE BAY
Probably better known for its ‘Made on Bruny’ gourmet food trail, but what better excuse to get over to Bruny Island than for a day driving the State Forest tracks of South Bruny? You won’t even need to pack anything for this day out as you can fill your picnic basket full to the brim on the way in with locally produced cherries, berries, cheese and wine, smoked meats and fresh oysters. Head south past the fairy penguin colony and across ‘The Neck’ towards Cloudy Bay Road and the State Forest opens up with three main tracks running west to east through the State Forest – all of which end up in Adventure Bay on the east coast.

If you have a little more time on your hands then why not base yourself at one of the sweetest camping spots in the whole of Tassie? Don’t tell your friends, but the camp at Cloudy Corner is one of the best kept secrets around. There’s even a couple of kilometres of beach driving to get you there, so drop your tyre pressures and you won’t be disappointed.

WELLINGTON PARK A little known 4X4 secret close to Hobart is Wellington Park and it offers a range of 4X4 tracks, most of which require recreation permits and gate keys. These can be obtained through the Derwent office of Parks and Wildlife Service.

Now don’t get me wrong, we love dual-cabs here at Unsealed 4X4. At last count we’ve owned well over a dozen of them between all of us here at the office. We like them, we really do; they’re one of the best all-rounder vehicles you can buy – and that’s kinda the problem. The flip side to being a great jack of all trades is that, realistically, dual-cabs are the ultimate compromise 4X4. They generally ride like rubbish, even with the five seats there’s not a lot of room in the back, and the tray space is roughly equivalent
to a wheelbarrow. If you’re using one for work, we hope you don’t have to carry anything much over a metre-and-a-half long – but still, they’re popular for a bunch of very good reasons. Or are they? I reckon the unsung hero of the ute world is the humble extended cab, or as they’re more commonly known – the extra-cab. So to celebrate the ‘middle child’ of work 4X4s, we threw together this quick list of reasons why you need to give them a second look.

SUICIDE DOORS
Just about all modern extra-cabs come with suicide doors (even Toyota has finally arrived late to the party with the 2016 ‘Lux), which offers a huge advantage over more usual frontopening rear doors on a dual-cab. Why, you ask? By having the rear door open towards the rear of the vehicle, you’re effectively getting rid of the B-pillar and opening up the entire cab of the vehicle to the outside world – giving extremely easy access to the interior. By having the entire cab area accessible it’s so much easier to

gain access to the rear section, where you may have stored any number of useful things: the dog; the fridge; the mother in law…
On top of that, you no longer have to get out of the vehicle when you want to cram a third person in the back. Open the front door, reach in and open the rear door, give them the standard disclaimer about claustrophobia and lack of personal responsibility, reverse the first two steps and you’re off.

MORE WHEELBASE
You may not have realised this, but most model extra-cabs usually have the longest wheelbase out of all the variants. “So what?” I hear you scoffing. But think about it for a minute. Having an extended wheelbase not only helps immeasurably during steep climbs when you’re four wheel driving, but it also aids in smoothing out bumps when travelling at speed, giving a comfier ride. And traditionally, people take all the comfort they can get when travelling in a work ute. There’s a reason limos have a mile between their axles – it makes things much smoother.

Fewer body panels equals lower weight. It’s that simple. Without turning this article into a physics tutorial (I remember them from my uni days – they were death), less weight is a good thing for a whole host of reasons. Power to weight ratio is better so your
vehicle effectively has more grunt. There’s less effort needed to get her moving so fuel consumption is reduced, and given that extra cabs generally share the same chassis with dual-cabs bar a few minor alterations, less weight means there’s more spare GVM available to carry gear with.

BETTER FOR TWOPERSON TOURING
Extra-cabs really are a great option when travelling with two people. As stated, there’s plenty of room in the back for the stuff you don’t want in the tray, and more real estate over the back axle means you can fit more things – bigger canopies, more camping gear, more toys like bikes and fishing rods. It also means you’re less likely to need a roof rack, which doesn’t do your economy any favours.
THEY LOOK COOLER
I admit this one is pretty subjective, but it’s hard to beat a king-sized cab and a big old tray on top of some long-travel suspension and moderately sized tyres for that tough-butpurposeful look, I reckon. They just look cool. There’s a reason that most of the pre-runners and desert race trucks are almost exclusively based on extra-cabs – they look fast sitting still!

Even though they are sensational four wheel drives, I’m certainly sick of reading the same articles about how to build them. So what if you are looking for something a little different to the norm when it comes to buying your next four wheel drive? Well, what we have assembled here is a quirky list of 4X4s you might not have ever considered or even heard of. Or, if you are like me and have an unhealthy obsession with all things with a transfer case, you might have wondered what each one of these alternatives would look like with a bit of lift and some taller tyres, maybe some bar work…

ASIA ROCSTA
They might look like the result of a drunken one-night stand between a Suzuki Sierra and a Jeep CJ, but is that such a bad thing? The Asia Rocsta is definitely a no-frills off-roader, which is evident when looking at the solid axles and leaf springs at both ends. Kia is responsible for distributing the Rocsta (Kia owns Asia Motors), and the engines used are Mazda units (the diesels are badged as Kia motors yet are copies of the Mazda RF series)
that were commonly found in Australia. This means engine and driveline parts are cheap and easy to come by. Body and trim parts are much harder to source though, as not many were sold in Australia (they sold 33 one year… yep, all year). Still, if you are chasing ‘the Jeep thing’ at Suzuki prices, the Asia Rocsta could be a fun toy; but only if you find one cheap enough.

DAIHATSU ROCKY
Sadly, in 1998 Daihatsu stopped selling the Rocky on the Australian market, replacing it with the Daihatsu Terios of all things. A sad day indeed!
Why the Rocky was never as popular as, say, the Suzuki Sierra I’ll never know. They are powered by bigger engines (the same Toyota Y Series petrol engines were used in the unbreakable HiLux range), and also have a beefier driveline to suit. Early models were available in SWB, LWB or utility. Suspension consists of solid axles and leaf springs front and rear on early models, with the final Rocky RV Turbo Wagon having front independent suspension, with a coil-sprung live rear axle. This
was also powered by a 2.8 litre intercooled turbo-diesel engine, which does a sterling job of moving the smaller Rocky around. Off-road, they have always been good performers. Daihatsu engineers even claim the later Sports Wagon will climb a 46° incline without coughing, and has incline stability of 44°… try that in your fancy new dual-cab ute!

HOLDEN FRONTERA SPORT
If you are looking for a fun offroader, the Frontera Sport is definitely one to investigate. The roof is removable for those who want the wind in their hair sensation (or need a cheap hunting rig), and the interior trim is as colourful as a bowl of fruit loops. But there is more to this vehicle than just colourful seats and a plastic lid. Take a good look at how long the rear suspension trailing arms are on the Frontera, if you ever get a chance to pop your head under one. They would have to be the longest factory suspension arms I have
ever seen! What that translates to is quite amazing levels of rear suspension travel with a few simple tweaks. While the body and electrical system were made in England, the engine is actually German-made and the four wheel drive system was poached from Isuzu. This means upgrades like diff-locks and suspension lifts are easy to source if you do some investigating, as many common parts are shared with the Holden Jackaroo and Rodeo.

KIA SPORTAGE (Don’t

Yeah, I know I know… a Kia isn’t what you would initially think of when it comes to your ultimate dream machine. But don’t disregard the little Korean that can, it has some very cool features and quite the cult following overseas. Building one is also quite affordable it seems. For example, the springs from a TJ Wrangler fit the rear of the Sportage and give it a 3-inch lift for a nice easy upgrade, and can then be matched to Toyota Rav 4 shock absorbers. Diff locks are available from a few outlets overseas, as is differential reduction gearing for helping with larger rubber. Throw in a body lift (35mm seems to be the popular choice rather than 2-inch) and a set of 30x9.5R15
rubber, and you now have an insanely capable wagon for less than the price of an overseas holiday. As for reliability, Korean vehicles tend to suffer more from electrical gremlins than mechanical. Which makes sense, as the engines are Mazda-sourced and are used commonly worldwide.

MITSUBISHI IO
The Pajero has a little brother that you might not know about, called the IO (said eeeee-ooooo). It really never took off in Australia, and they certainly aren’t a common sight in the bush. But for the low money they fetch second-hand they’re worth a look, and from most reports, they certainly seem to be holding up well. The live axle in the rear, low-range gearing and typical Mitsubishi tough driveline mean this is actually a small four wheel drive, not another soft-roader. They also look rather stylish, and are relatively comfortable for their size. Diff locks can be purchased through the aftermarket industry, as the rear diff is the same as used in the
older 2.5L and 2.8L SWB Pajeros. A small suspension lift isn’t hard to arrange either; nor slightly larger tyres. Sure, the IO will never win any awards when it comes to suspension travel, but it would be the ideal truck to take camping or to the beach, without using much fuel in the process thanks to the smaller 1.8L or 2.0L petrol engines.

NISSAN TERRANO The original Terrano is about a visually appealing as a pair of used socks. But if you can deal with the dated boxy exterior (and interior too, really), these things are absolute bargains. Take one look at the online classifieds, and you will notice many Nissan Terranos have been set up to use as backpackers ‘vans’. This is because they are tough, reliable, simple to work on and have a good usable amount of interior space. The TD27 four-cylinder engine is one of the best old-school turbo diesels ever produced too, however there are reports of
weak auto and manual gearboxes which is a black mark against the driveline’s name. Rust can also be an issue under the rear seats, so definitely have a look there if considering one. Otherwise, a Nissan Terrano would make for a very capable touring vehicle without breaking the bank. Just ensure the previous owner hasn’t towed too much and has regularly serviced the gearbox, as the bearings tend to flog out.

SUZUKI VITARA
Considered the original ‘hairdresser’s 4X4’, the Suzuki Vitara would have to be one of the most misunderstood four wheel drives of all time! People love the Sierra, yet write off the old Vit. But when you look at how people are modifying their Sierras, it’s with Vitara engines, brakes, diff gears, power steering and gearboxes in many cases. So in theory, wouldn’t the Vitara be the better choice to modify into a capable off-roader? I’ve had both, and still own a Sierra. But if I were to do it again a SWB softtop Vitara would just make more sense. The G16B fuel injected 1.6L engine is the pick of the litter, and makes smooth power with bucketloads of torque from
such a small amount of capacity. The 4-speed automatic gearbox behind that engine is also a gem, made by Toyota, and is actually also found in the XJ Cherokee with the 4.0L six cylinder engine… so a 1.6L engine shouldn’t worry it at all! Anything and everything is available for the Vitara, as they were sold as the Sidekick or Chevy Geo-Tracker in America where aftermarket mods are a dime-a-dozen. Forget the image, the reality is Vitaras are awesome and I don’t care if I lose points from my man card for saying so!

Let’s be honest. Most of us when we head out bush accept the fact that living under canvas involves sacrificing some of the luxuries of life. Not that it’s a bad thing; many of us love the feeling of living ‘off the grid’ and enjoying the simpler things in life. However if you’re the type of person who doesn’t like living without a flushing loo, it doesn’t mean you have to stay at home. These days there are fully off-road capable caravans that, if I’m being
honest, are nicer than any of the houses I’ve lived in. Take the Lotus Caravans Trooper for example. These things allow us to visit those off-road destinations we love so much without the usual compromises that come with camping. I recently took one away for a weekend up at Wollemi National Park near the Hunter Valley in New South Wales for one of the comfiest trips I’ve ever been on.

I think it’d be fair to say that caravans and off-road ability don’t usually go hand in hand, they’re basically a house on wheels after all; but Lotus Caravans have apparently done plenty of R&D here to deliver consistent off-road performance from the Trooper. The chassis has been built by G&S Chassis in Campbellfield in Victoria, and offers plenty of protection without being overweight. The frame was actually built off a design concept that was specifically contrived for off-road use, and it works well. The Control Rider suspension swings off giant independent A-arms and is

controlled by coil springs and Koni shocks, all of which are certainly deserving of the ‘heavy-duty’ moniker. 12-inch electric brakes are fitted to all four trailer wheels and provide plenty of stopping force both on-and off-road. There is also plenty of tube and plate underneath to prevent against any knocks or bumps when driving the tracks, and there’s scrub bars that run right along the bottom corners of the van which are then linked back to the frame for additional support. The vitals are all nicely tucked up out of harm’s way too, a sure sign this thing has been designed for use in the bush. The drawbar is nice and long which makes backing the big girl up a fairly painless process, and there’s a mammoth toolbox and

room for the gas bottles behind the stone guard. A Hitchmaster DO35 coupling connects the trailer and tow vehicle together and allows for plenty of unencumbered movement when negotiating tighter tracks. There’s even an LED light for hitching up or ferreting around in the dark. Walking around the back end of the Trooper is equally impressive. There’s a spare mounted up nice and high along with two jerry can holders which are all linked back to the van’s chassis, so there’s no cheap rivets or body welds to rattle themselves to an early grave here. There’s even rated recovery points, again mounted to the chassis, for ultimate peace of mind.

Whilst the Trooper really wouldn’t be suitable for, say, the Old Tele Track or the big sand dunes of the Simmo, the increased ground clearance, flat floor pan, tough suspension system and excellent protection mean that places like the Gibb River Road, Cape Leveque, the Oodnadatta Track and the Flinders Ranges are all quite feasible with the Lotus Caravan hanging off the back of your 4X4. Given the luxury onboard, I reckon that’s quite an achievement.

Straight up, the interior of this caravan is a lovely place to be. It’s built to a high standard and the attention to detail was obviously a priority in the design brief. It offers a modern take on the caravan living space without a wood panel or floral curtain in sight. Acrylic splashbacks, laminate benchtops and venetian blinds are complemented by glossy whites, black leather and plenty of stainless steel.

The centrally-mounted dinette, complete with trifold-out black table, makes excellent use of the available space and the kitchen is good enough to make you actually look forward to meal prep. The bathroom just feels high-end. The glossy white vanity cupboard with stainless finishings is top quality without being gaudy. The Lotus Caravans Trooper is available in sizes ranging from 16-22 foot and can come with a range of options to suit your individual needs. It has all the features you need (and some you probably don’t) for being on (and off) the road.

We’ve finally got our hands on a brand new 1200 Series Quad Optic Linear Driving Light from Xray Vision and there’s no doubt about it, this is a massive light! But along with size, often comes the next question – where on earth do you put something that big?

On to the wiring harness and running the 3m cord into the engine bay was the easy part. Next came the mouse switches to run through the firewall, then we mounted the relays for the separately switched spread and pencil beams which run off the high beam setting. Finally it was time to connect the wiring up to the battery and we were ready to rock and roll. Given the 1200 Series is a combination of 24 high powered 10W CREE LEDs, we recommend firing it up while the engine is running to ensure the light functions to its full potential and gets the full power output of the alternator through the main battery. Turning the workshop lights off
and giving the LEDs a quick run sure was impressive to say the least, and adjusting the beam is one of the best design features in any light we’ve seen. It’s simply a matter of loosening the end bolts then adjusting it up or down through the pre-fitted beam adjuster screw and re-tightening the end bolts. Simple and efficient! We’ll see how these new linear driving lights really perform in the field in an upcoming issue of Unsealed 4X4. We’ll look at varying elements from light output at distance as well as the power current draw and other key features of this series of lights which really set them apart from their competitors in terms of design and quality.

The Toyota Prado is a popular all-rounder. It’s Mum’s weekend taxi loaded with kids and sporting gear, or Dad’s fishing tow-tug, hauling the boat. Out on the highway, the Prado is Nan and Pop’s mobile home on an Oz odyssey. Dress it up with aftermarket gear for an offroad adventure, or add high visibility striping and amber roof lights for mining sites. With that sort of following, it
stands to reason that Toyota must be doing something right. For years they’ve played it safe – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But to keep fans loyal and to meet ever more stringent environmental emission standards, Toyota has finally updated both the engine and transmission in the 2015 Prado with a smaller capacity 1GDFTV 2.8L, adding a six-ratio auto to make the most of the new engine’s capabilities.

From the moment you press the start button, tootling through stop-start suburbia to the freeway, there’s a noticeable improvement in the overall refinement and quietness of the new 2.8L fourbanger. The six-speed auto polishes that refinement with smooth changes working in harmony with the engine’s torque delivery, allowing the Prado to cruise along in a relaxed manner, ideal for the open road. Stir the Prado along and while the 2.8L will respond valiantly,
it never convincingly imposes authority onto the Prado’s not-soinsignificant kerb weight of 2,315kg. But as the Prado is not trying to build a reputation as a sports car, there’s no real fault with adequate rather than assertive performance. Engaging low-range in the dirt, the 1GD-FTV began to show its talents as the Prado competently tackled washouts, ruts, steep slippery climbs, water crossings and twisted tracks that would test the mettle of any suspension and traction system.

The previous 3.0L produced 410Nm @ 1,600-2,800rpm, while the smaller 2.8L pushes 450Nm @ 1,600-2,400rpm. Yes, it’s dropped 400rpm over the torque curve but it now puts greater effort where it’s actually needed in the more frequently used driving rev range.

The six-speed auto met every challenge, and provided a reasonable low first ratio for crawling; aided by engine braking it was our preferred option on several sections, rather than using the effective, but noisy, downhill assist control. While the Prado has a rated towing capacity of 2,500kg, we only hooked up a 600kg trailer for a quick run on the highway to get a feel for the 2.8’s response. For the best part of the journey, the Prado felt at ease with the extra weight. But when needing to accelerate from 90 to the registered speed limit of 110km/h, she felt a tad asthmatic. The appropriate driver technique would be needed when passing slower traffic with a bigger van in tow. When using sport mode, attempts to upshift to apply engine torque rather than wasted rpm saw the auto continue to hold gear – making the 2.8 swing all the way to peak power of 3,400rpm before allowing any upshift. With a combination of off-road, suburban, highway and a little light towing, the Prado returned average fuel economy figures of 11L/100km. very new engine, which would free up over time and deliver better mileage. Over the years, Toyota has delivered plenty of memorable vehicles and built a strong reputation. Between top-selling vehicles and strong marketing, the motoring public have come to expect a lot from each new Toyota – which makes it difficult for the engineers to keep exceeding those expectations. Yes, Toyota has delivered a better product. This new engine/ auto combination is smoother, quieter, claims more fuel efficiency and records extra grunt down low on paper. But it’s only better by degrees. It’s not disappointing; it’s just not everything that you’d want in a long-awaited upgrade. Rather than setting a new benchmark, it’s just levelled up with competitors. There’s no question, the Prado is still a good all-rounder that easily adapts to multiple roles. Always comfortable and capable and now with further refinement for an even better driving experience; this new revision will ensure Prado’s reliable reputation remains intact.

When most four wheel drivers think of high mountains and crystal clear streams they immediately imagine the Victorian High Country. That’s fair enough, but it’s a long way away for anyone who doesn’t live in Victoria. high country, easily accessible to most of NSW population. Barrington Tops National Park was declared in 1969 and was subsequently listed as a World Heritage Area and then a Wilderness Area. The park includes some of the most pristine bushland, not only in NSW or Australia, but anywhere in the world. The area includes sedimentary rocks in the lowerlying regions with granite across much of the top. The vegetation varies with both the rock type and the elevation, from scrubland to moist rainforests to sub-alpine forests.

There’s a few water crossings in the area but nothing too serious. Still, it’s worth walking some of the deeper ones first
Our trip started in the Barrington State Forest on the northern side of Barrington National Park. The State Forest has two designated camping areas at Manning River and Dilgry River but if you search hard enough there are also plenty of small isolated camps that you are almost guaranteed to have to yourself. Some are easily accessed by taking a side track off one of the main trails, whilst others require a little
more exploring to find. This is not your average pine plantation State Forest either. The native trees and plants have taken over and as a result there is wildlife a-plenty. This really is a bush camper’s paradise for anyone looking to get away from the generally much busier National Park camp-grounds. The Manning River, which flows through both the State Forest and the National Park, is a

known trout fishery. During our stay we saw why, as the river was stocked with 18,000 inchlong trout. This seemed like a huge number until we saw only two 20-litre buckets poured into the river. It turns out 18,000 tiny trout are quite compact. Our first stop on our tour around The Tops was on Gummi Road where the bridge passes over the Manning River. A short but undulating walk upstream of the bridge leads to Manning
Falls. This magnificent waterfall includes a section of cascades immediately followed by a fivemetre waterfall into a stunning plunge pool. In warmer months swimming is most definitely an option, however the rocks surrounding the pool are very slippery so appropriate care should be taken. In the cooler months just standing back and observing the power and beauty of Mother Nature is reason enough to visit this spot.

Nothing like a million star accommodation
From the State Forest we headed south along Dilgry Circuit to Barrington Forest Road (also known as the SconeGloucester Road). This is the main road through The Tops and passes by a number of lookouts and campgrounds. The first such lookout we stopped in at was Thunderbolt’s Lookout. You will notice the name Thunderbolt to be recurring throughout the New England region. More on that later. The lookout is a 300 metre slight uphill walk to a timber observation deck. From here there are views to the south over the National Park and east towards the coast. In fact on a super-clear day you could almost see all the way to the coast. Take the time to just soak it all in here. It really is special.

Further west along the Barrington Forest Road is Devils Hole Lookout. A very short and easy 200 metre walk along a paved footpath takes you to another observation deck where the arguments can begin about which lookout has the better views. It really is a flip of the coin, as both are simply stunning and both are more than 1,400 metres above sea level.

Almost directly across the road from the lookout is Devils Hole Campground. It’s perched on the banks of the Dilgry River and even in busy times you can usually find your own small piece of bush. Through the campground there is a gate which is closed and locked between June and September every year. In the warmer months, however, you can pass through and onto Thunderbolts Trail. Up to this point the driving has been along forest roads that
are generally well maintained. The seasonal tracks through the park are a different story altogether and can vary from well maintained to slippery clay in an instant. Not 10 metres beyond the seasonal gate you make the first crossing of the Dilgry River. Normally shallow with a firm base, it’s best to walk this crossing before driving it. When I walked it, I found a large submerged branch that could have spelt disaster for someone’s radiator. Be prepared for cold feet as being in a subalpine area at 1,400 metres above sea level, the water is almost always freezing cold.

While the tracks are generally in good condition, there are plenty of muddy sections to catch out the unwary
A little further up we turned down Tugalow Trail and were greeted by hundreds of metres of muddy ruts and bog holes. Even though it was quite warm, these ruts were full of water and did not look like drying out any time soon. A slow and steady approach saw all the 4X4s through without issue, even if a couple of the standard vehicles with less clearance did scrape their undersides a couple of times. Continuing down the hill the reason for driving this track becomes obvious. A clear water
crossing over the Manning River takes you to Gummi Falls and Gummi Falls Campground. This spectacular spot includes grassy campsites mere metres from the Manning River and a stunning 1-2 metre high waterfall. A small plunge pool is the perfect spot for a cool-down on a hot summer’s day. This really is one of the best campsites in the National Park and the modest fee certainly seems reasonable when you consider the location. Taking Bullock Brush Road out of the campground, a turn down

Barrington Trail will lead through areas of ferns that make you feel like you have suddenly stepped back in time to a prehistoric era. The trail links up with Barrington Forest Road or you can continue across the road to Junction Pools and Mount Barrington. In our case we turned down the forest road to check out something really special. Not far away is Polblue Swamp. This open, grassy area, located at around 1,500 metres above sea level, may look like some other heathlands or grasslands
but a secret hides within. The sphagnum moss in this area is what makes it so special. The moss absorbs and filters the available water in wet times and gradually releases it during dry times. This effectively means that Polblue Creek has a steady flow through all climatic conditions. The steady flow and grass lining means that the water in this creek is some of the clearest you will ever see. If you are willing to take the time to look and absorb, nature really will blow your mind.

Waterfalls are just some of the natural wonders in the area
The swamp is also a top spot for observing wildlife. While we were there we spotted a swamp wallaby and a grey kangaroo. Wombats and brush turkeys are common too. We saved perhaps the most peculiar of the natural wonders in The Tops for last. ‘The Rock’ is located on Dilgry Circle and is a huge granite outcrop in the middle of the bush where two large boulders have formed, one on top of the other. Some say it looks like a mushroom, others say something else. I’ll let you decide for yourself. Whatever you think The Rock resembles, it’s definitely worth a look to see another marvel of nature. It always pays to travel with a few mates, you never know when you are gonna need recovering
Earlier on I mentioned that the name ‘Thunderbolt’ was recurring throughout the area. The reason for this was the infamous Captain Thunderbolt aka Fred Ward. Thunderbolt was a bushranger convicted of stealing horses, who famously escaped Cockatoo Island. Following his escape Thunderbolt led bushrangers throughout the New England district robbing inns and stores from the mid 1860s until he was shot dead near Uralla in
1870. In one of his more famous encounters with the authorities, Thunderbolt was part of a shootout after bailing up a store at Moonan Brook in 1867. Just down the road from the scene of that famous shootout lies the Victoria Hotel at Moonan Flat. The pub is at the western gateway to Barrington Tops and is a favourite for travellers. We chose this spot to complete our trip. A cold beer and a great feed at a country pub is very

hard to beat. The hotel was constructed in 1895; however the adjoining building (now residence) was a former wine shanty frequented by none other than Thunderbolt himself during the gold mining years. A look around the pub reveals walls covered with historical photos of the region. Keep an eye out for the photo of the collapsed Belltrees Bridge (when a heavy truck attempted to drive across it).
What a fantastic trip through an amazing area. The wilderness of the Tops is simply second to none and if you haven’t been you should definitely mark it down on the calendar. If you have been, then you should probably go again because I’m sure there will be more to see next time. A long weekend is enough to get up for a look around from Sydney, but be warned... once you do, you will be back. I know we will.

October saw the Toyota LandCruiser Club’s 14th annual Willowglen Challenge held on their sprawling 320 acre property in the NSW Southern Highlands. Over 60 vehicles representing 16 different teams competed in the three-day event, incorporating ten tortuous stages. The event kicked off on Friday night with ‘Moonlit Ravine’, putting one vehicle from each team into the darkness in an attempt to complete the stage with nothing but the lights on their vehicle. Early the next morning saw the day’s four stages running simultaneously with teams working their way

through each course. Four more stages were held on Sunday morning, with the ‘finale’ mud hole getting started by mid afternoon. When the dust and mud settled, it was the Toyota Club’s own team which came out on top – boasting a handy 200-point margin back to the Bong Bong club in second place. They were closely followed by Shellharbour just two points further back.

REGGIE’S RANGER
Here is Reggie’s 2014 Ford Ranger XLS 3.2L named the Dirty Beast because it doesn’t get a wash very often, since Reggie is out exploring most weekends. The Ranger is an upgrade to his previous vehicle, a Nissan X-Trail. While the challenge with the X-Trail was picking the right line, with the Ranger the challenge is learning how to use low-range and diff lockers (according to Reggie). The Ranger is built as a tourer and every piece of equipment has a purpose on the ute. SCOTTY’S 40 SERIES LANDCRUISER
If you live in the Western Sydney area of NSW, you will no doubt know Scotty. He runs Penrith OffRoad Warehouse in Penrith, and has been involved in the industry for… well, for as long as we can remember! This is his latest toy which we spotted at the recent Sydney 4WD and Adventure Show, an FJ40 shortie that has been built
to display a few products as well as have some fun in. Currently, it is still powered by the old 3F petrol engine, but this won’t be staying like it for long. The body has just been sprayed in flat matte green, which looks tops, and speaking of tops he has decided to run a fastback soft top for a sporty look. Stay tuned for more on this truck, as we are keen to feature it once the paint has dried and everything has been bolted up.

GRANT’S DISCOVERY
By the looks of things the list of places Grant hasn’t been in his 2007 Land Rover Discovery 3 might be shorter than the places he has. With a 21-foot Jayco Basestation in tow, Grant’s traversed Alice Springs, Kings Canyon, the Simpson Desert, Uluru, the Great Ocean Road and both the Sunshine and Gold Coasts – to name just a few. Additions he’s started off with have been a Brown Davis tank, an
ARB Simpson III roof top tent and an Opposite Lock bullbar.
To get him from his hometown of Canberra through the Simpson Desert Bike Challenge to Birdsville, Grant had his Dolium wheel carrier, Redarc BCDC1240 with an Optima D34, UHF, rock sliders, Toyo Open Country ATII tyres and Waeco CF50. The trip is one he’ll remember almost as fondly as he does the births of his four kids. Good to see modern vehicles out and about!

In Australia the average motorist punches out roughly 18,350kms over the space of 12 months. Just around 350km a week. That’s probably on the low end for most 4X4 owners but let’s work with it for now. We’ll take a few liberties here but it’s important to set a baseline on why little changes are so important when you’re trying to cut down on fuel consumption. If you’re averaging 15L per 100km, also low, you’ll chew through 2,752.5L of fuel in
a year, assuming you’re sticking to 350kms a week and not setting off on any 4X4 trips which could easily see you do the same distance in a day. Now bump the consumption from 15L/100km to 17L/100km, a minor difference, less than most people see just by fitting a few accessories. This will see the fuel usage jump from 2,752.5L up to 3,119.5L, factor in a modest $1.50/L and that’s an increase

in fuel usage of $550 straight out of your pocket. Every year. And that’s assuming you drive very little each week. Throw in a couple of trips, or a longer-thanaverage drive to work, and you could be throwing $1,000 a year in the bin for nothing. Starting to see why this is so important? But wait, it gets worse. A study done by the NRMA found we import 91% of our fuel. We’d run out in three weeks if the tap
was turned off on imports. The flip-side of this is a lot of our fuel comes from countries like Saudi Arabia – one of the biggest fuel exporters in the world. Also notorious for state-sponsored terrorism for groups like ISIS and Al-Qaeda. Here’s a little truth bomb for you: By buying more fuel than you need to you’re pretty well funding terrorism in the Middle East. So how do we fix it and cut down on our fuel consumption?

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States did a study a few years back on weight and the effect on fuel consumption. The results were for every 50kg of dead weight removed, fuel consumption improved by 1-2%. A seemingly minor number, until we do the maths again. 2% of 3,119.5L is just over 62 litres a year. By pulling 50kg out of your 4X4 you’re essentially getting close to a full tank of fuel, every single year, for free.
This amount of gear is fantastic if you’re off on an extended trip, but there’s a lot of extra weight being carried for a run to the shops…

Right, we’re all on the same page when it comes to excess weight being bad for fuel consumption. If you’re trying to cut back on your fuel bill and buy a few less AK47s for the terrorists, it’s best to leave your second spare at home when you’re not using it. The same can be applied when you actually do need it, though. For most of us, heading off on a trip always feels like an adventure; off to battle the odds, man vs nature, creating fire with nothing but our beards. Truthfully most of the time we’re little more than a few hours from the nearest 24-hour Woolworths with a Kmart Tyre and Auto right around the corner. If you’re out with a few mates, maybe share the tool kit rather than everyone bringing their own. If you’re doing an overnighter you probably don’t need 80L of water just in case. Everything you need; nothing you don’t.

There’s a reason land speed record cars aren’t shaped like shipping containers, and a small percentage of that scales down to the real world too. It’s a bit like a sliding scale, we’re not going the sort of speeds they are so we don’t need to be as slippery; but in the quest for low fuel consumption every little bit adds up. In fact one of the big reasons manufacturers keep canning old style 4X4s is due to poor aerodynamics hurting fuel consumption and (as a result)
emissions. With that in mind it doesn’t make a lot of sense to go out of your way to make your four wheel drive less aerodynamic.
That five poster bullbar and 12-inches of lift alone are going to add more than 2L/100km. Near on $1,000 a year for the privilege of looking like you’re fond of your sister. It’s the same principal as knocking speed off on the freeway. The difference between 90 and 110 km/h can mean as much as a 25% saving in fuel consumption, and that’s a lot of rocket-propelled grenades.

As I’m writing this I’m jammed into a seat between a bloke who should be a prop-forward for the Wallabies and a guy who bowed out in the first episode of last year’s The Biggest Loser (I’ve officially lost feeling in my legs) on a flight over to Perth for the 4WD & Adventure Show. In years gone by I’ve never really enjoyed being on stands at 4WD shows. I’m usually running around in the heat like a headless chook and barely get a chance to speak to anyone or check anything out for myself, plus they require a lot of heavy lifting – something I’ve spent most of my life trying to avoid. This year has changed my mind on them though. You know why? Because I got to hang out with a whole heap of you guys.

Deadset, over the Sydney and Adelaide shows we must’ve met more Unsealed 4X4 fans than I thought was possible. What blew my mind however was the overwhelming amount of positive feedback we kept getting. It was both humbling and gratifying to say the least. So with that in mind I have a bit of a challenge for our WA readers. You don’t want to buy a second-hand pile of someone else’s problems and a rat’s nest of bodgy wiring; you want it to be capable of tackling anything this country can throw at it; and you don’t want to spend more than $50K. This was exactly the situation that Gary Tischer found himself in, back in 2011. After sussing out what was on the market and what fitted his criteria he’d narrowed the choice down to two options. The Land Rover Defender ticked a lot of boxes but when he came across this FJ Cruiser for a

grand under budget he knew he was onto a winner.
To be fair, we can understand his choice. The FJs are pretty good straight out of the cereal packet sporting plenty of capability with the factory rear locker, excellent safety ratings and generally just being a solidly usable four wheel drive, and with a few choice mods and a little good old-fashioned cando attitude, Gary has converted his into a rig that’s as comfortable eating up endless Outback miles as it is on the daily commute to work. THE 4X4
Not wanting to waste time, Gary was off on a trip as soon as the Cruiser was his. With the ink on the rego papers still wet, he and his daughter Elodie hit the road in the big yellow bus and took an amazing drive down from their home state of Queensland to Southern NSW and hit the snow. While the FJ handled it all admirably, the gears in Gary’s head were already turning on how to make it suit his needs even better.

take Gary, his daughter and his wife to wherever they liked without sacrificing driveability for everyday use. A truly versatile off-roader that could easily handle daily duties – sounds like a big ask, but I reckon Gary has absolutely knocked it for six. With his tasteful yet practical mods he’s got himself a rig that’ll get him there and back and to work on time on Monday without a hiccup.
As with every FJ Cruiser, this one is sporting the 4.0L V6 petrol powerplant. While many folks still can’t believe Toyota hasn’t brought out a turbo diesel variant (yep, I’m one of ‘em – what’s the deal Toyo-san?) Gary isn’t bothered one bit. He tells us that it has plenty of power when it’s needed and the Long Ranger tank takes care of any fuel range issues. Plus when driving it sensibly (apparently Gary’s leadfoot days are long behind him) it doesn’t even use that much fuel anyway (and is cheaper to maintain, to boot). Who said you need an oil burner for touring?

THE MODIFICATIONS
Now bear in mind, this thing was still relatively new back in 2011 (interestingly this particular FJ was one of the first to hit our shores after the infamous Fukushima nuclear meltdown caused by the monster tsunami that hit Japan; Gary tells us it had to be tested for radiation before he could buy it!) so there wasn’t a heap of aftermarket gear available. Not to be deterred he hit up his local TJM store and wrangled them into using his Cruiser as the R&D vehicle for the snorkel, front bar and rock rails to get the water fording and impact protection side of things sorted. Along the way a couple of inches of suspension lift made its way under the guards and a set of chunky Goodyear Wrangler MTR Kevlar tyres on the stock 17-inch alloys were bolted up to the hubs. Gary reckons the tyres are ‘expensive, but bombproof’. He rates them over any terrain – and he’s been on just about every terrain there is too – and tells us when these ones wear out he won’t hesitate to buy them again. As mentioned, there’s a 120L Long Ranger fuel tank bolted underneath to bring the total fuel capacity to 190L, which Gary conservatively reckons is good for

an easy 1,100km. It could go more but he likes to keep a little in reserve should he feel like taking any detours along the way. To put it in perspective, he’s driven from Birdsville in QLD to Kulgera in the NT without refuelling before – pretty impressive!
A triple battery system takes care of the 12V needs and provides plenty of amps for the X-ray Vision spotties, lightbar, fridge and camp lighting. Gary can keep an eye on the state of his electrical system thanks to a voltage gauge that’s been neatly recessed into the rear cargo area. Possibly the coolest thing about Gary’s rig though is the fact that once he’s back from a big trip, after a little time on the tools he’s more or less got it back to stock for around-town driving. Yep, off come the off-road tyres and rock

rails, and the Pioneer roofrack that is usually put to work carrying the kayak or mountain bike is leaned against the wall of the shed before the rear seats are thrown back in and his FJ is ready for commuting and grocerygetting duties. Now that’s trick. When the travelbug bites again, the racks and sliders are all bolted back on, the rear seats are removed and the Garydesigned and built storage shelf is fitted into the rear along with some storage boxes and he’s ready to hit the dirt. The entire vehicle is basically a giant
meccano set that can be kitted for hard touring or brought back to city spec with nothing other than some spanner-twirling. Talk about flexibility.
When asked if there was anything he didn’t like about his FJ, Gary spent a bit of time thinking about it before coming back with, “It’s a bit hard to get rear passengers out of the suicide doors in shopping centre car parks, but they’re excellent when you’re camping. It’s like opening a cupboard – easy access to all your gear. Why would you buy a Prado?” Hard to argue with that…

It’s often said the best things in life are free. I think you can take that a little further and say the best things in life are also illegal. No, I’m not talking about that questionable weekend in Surfers Paradise I had a few years ago. How was I to know she’d want to be paid? I’m talking about vehicle modifications. Sure, we all like to do our top button up and pretend we’re high and mighty when it comes to mods on our rigs, not like those other 4X4ers in their bogan chariots with complete disregard for the law... don’t act like you don’t know who I mean. We’re sensible around here, just a couple of inches of lift, a slightly bigger size tyre and a few quality 4X4 accessories. The

The only problem is, at some stage in the last 20 years we’ve apparently turned into a nation of blundering idiots, not to be trusted with anything sharper than a blunt butter knife lest society fall into chaos. Sure, it’s never been officially recognised, but judging by the current vehicle modification laws the government clearly thinks it’s true. So while the powers that be are busy strapping us into our children’s stack hats it’s important to know where you might be running afoul of the constabulary. Here are our top five things that people get wrong (from a legal standpoint) when modifying their 4X4s.

BEING OVER GVM
Truck weighbridges are a familiar sight if you’re doing any sort of regular driving, with huge fines for drivers and companies if a truck is overloaded. No-one really argues this as it’s just a ‘no brainer’. Too much weight for the brakes or steering to handle can cause the truck to carry too much speed and run wide through corners, or overpower the brakes and send a five-poster bullbar straight into the back of a family truckster off on a camping trip. Overloading a 4X4 is just as dangerous, and just as illegal.
today’s lightweight 4X4s. The 2016 HiLux has a payload of up to 1,000kg; sounds like a lot but let’s do some sums. Two adults and two kids will knock at least 150kg off that. A full long-range tank can knock another 150kg off again. Front and rear bars with a set of sidesteps? That’s another 100kg at least. We’ve chewed through 40% of the payload without even taking into account heavier tyres, winch, driving lights, roof rack, drawers, water storage, dual batteries and camping gear. Know your vehicle’s weight limits and pack accordingly – the last thing you want is to void your insurance should the worst happen.

STAFF C EV GROWS UP… WELL, HIS TRUCK DOES ANYWAY If you saw the Staff Corner last issue, you would have seen the Zook I just picked up, and began modifying with a Uneek 4X4 bullbar. Well, after pottering around in it for the last few weeks, it became apparent that I need something bigger for touring trips. When this GQ Patrol showed up online at the right price, I had to make it mine. Now, the mods begin.

Basically it’s a HJ47 cab on an extended 80 Series chassis, diffs and come on this one; I’ll keep you guys up to date as the build progresses. suspension running a 1HZ diesel powerplant that’s bolted to a 75 Series bell housing attached to a 60 Series five-speed and transfer case. So it’s a bunch of different ‘Cruisers rolled into one with the overall aim to have 40 Series looks, 80 Series comfort and mechanical injection reliability – oh yeah, it’s all been done working with an engineer so it’ll be 100% road-legal too. So far I’ve cut and stretched the frame, mounted the engine and transmission on custom mounts, fabricated new body mounts and got the cab in place after cutting out about an acre of rust. Because I’m a firm believer in the ‘do it once, do it right’ principle (some may say I’m just an idiot – you decide) I’ve also junked the 30-year-old wiring and I’m re-doing it all with an E-Z
