T
his month MPTV is pleased and excited to welcome Wisconsin Virtual Learning of Wisconsin as one of our newest underwriters! They underwrite Sesame Street, winner of 164 Emmys for the high-quality of its children’s literacy program. Sesame Street airs at 9 a.m. and 12:00 noon Monday through Friday. Wisconsin Virtual Learning (WVL) is a public charter school of the Northern Ozaukee School District and combines 21st century technology, personalized instruction, and interactive curriculum for elementary, middle school, and high school students. Their goal is to be both high-touch and high-tech in order to personalize student learning for each and every one of their students. They serve students from kindergarten through high school from across the state of Wisconsin. Their teachers are experienced and licensed by the State of Wisconsin in each of their subject assignments, committed to creating a close knit educational community for students and their parents. WVL offers a variety of academic options for its middle and high-school students. The first is the virtual pathway, which offers students live classes which meet at a specific day and time each week, offering students the most teacher support and interaction. The second option offers students the opportunity to work on their studies at their own pace with teacher support. If students and their parents prefer, students may choose a blended course load, combining elements of the virtual and independent pathways. According to Mellissa Horn, Executive Director and Principal at Wisconsin Virtual Learning, “As an online charter school of the Northern Ozaukee School District, Wisconsin Virtual Learning is excited to sponsor Sesame Street and partner with Milwaukee Public Television. WVL sees the positive impact MPTV has on the community and sponsoring Sesame Street is one way we can show our support.” MPTV is thankful and appreciative of Wisconsin Virtual Learning’s underwriting support of Sesame Street. ilwaukee Public Television is happy to announce that Tavis Smiley is heading to Milwaukee to tape a special edition of his eponymous PBS series on April 19th. Smiley, considered one of American most accomplished and influential television and radio hosts, will tape a half-hour program spotlighting the role and importance of technical colleges in the landscape of education and industry. Milwaukee is one of five cities that will share “one great idea” their city is undertaking to improve America; the other featured cities Smiley will visit include Cleveland, Boston, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. At the April 19th taping in the Cooley Auditorium of the downtown MATC campus, Milwaukee Area Technical College President Dr. Vicki Martin will be one of the guests on Tavis Smiley's show as well as two MATC graduates whose pathways to professional success exemplify the value of an MATC education. We're happy to invite MPTV viewers to be part of what promises to be a special and informative afternoon. The television taping will begin at 12:45 PM and following the half-hour, special guests who would like Smiley to autograph a copy of his new book “50 For Your Future: Lessons from Down the Road” will head upstairs to MATC's 6th floor for a meet and greet with our special guest of honor. Copies of “50 For Your Future: Lessons from Down the Road” will be available for purchase before the show in a room directly adjacent to Cooley Auditorium. In his latest book, the prominent television and radio host, philanthropist and community leader shares his lessons and guiding principles in life. From his humble roots in Indiana, Smiley has fought hard to elevate the ideas shared with him by many of his heroes and mentors; Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Peter Jennings and Maya Angelou. With the details of the April 19th out of the way, I'd like to take this opportunity to admit I have a tremendous appreciation of Tavis Smiley. Full disclosure: I've enjoyed a professional relationship with Tavis since 2003, when the PBS station I worked for became his co-production partner. Response to Tavis' new series was positive from day one because of his honest, smart, editorial approach to the national and international decision makers, leaders and cultural icons who have graced his show. One year, the artist Prince agreed to be a guest on Tavis' show; not only did Prince appear on Tavis' program the legendary performer also performed a concert that night in front of 20,000 to raise money for Tavis' community work. That's the side that is less known, by the star's own design. Tavis uses his position in media to focus on those who are less fortunate.

10&36 DAYTIME
20-21
I'll share one other fond memory that especially resonates with me during this year's enormously noisy and divisive Presidential debate process that is fueled, I'm sorry to say, by media that has dispensed with ethics and journalistic standards to grab ratings and headlines with sophomoric 'moderating'. In sharp contrast to what's happening today, Tavis Smiley made television history in 2007 as the moderator and executive producer of the All-American Presidential Forums on PBS, the first primetime television Democratic and Republican presidential debates with panels exclusively comprised of journalists of color. Those live broadcast debates were smart, civil and to this day are still considered hallmarks of the kind of journalism that sets PBS apart from other networks. Serving as one of the production executives on those two live broadcasts will forever be a highlight in my career. That leads me back to April 19th, 2016 - an afternoon that really will be as special as the man who will command the stage in Cooley Auditorium - Tavis Smiley. It's an honor for Milwaukee Public Television to have been selected for this important production. And we hope you'll be part of the making of Tavis Smiley's very special visit to Milwaukee and MATC. To RSVP for the April 19th event, head to mptv.org or matc.edu. I'm open to your comments and ideas. Feel free to email me at mptvgm@matc.edu. Thank you.

MPTV GENERAL MANAGER BOHDAN ZACHARY CHATS WITH TAVIS SMILEY ABOUT LIFE, HIS 5 CITY TOUR, HIS NEW BOOK AND MUCH MORE! DELIGHTED THAT WE’RE STILL HERE. THEY WERE TAKING BETS THAT I WOULDN’T LAST AS THE FIRST PERSON OF COLOR TO HAVE HIS OWN NIGHTLY SHOW IN THE HISTORY OF PBS. WE SURVIVED! How is it that you can continue your determination to have insightful and thought provoking conversations with your guests instead of settling into the all too present formula of the shouting matches that permeate other news networks?
Watch the Milwaukee episode of Tavis Smiley on April 19th, at 10 p.m. on Ch.10

THE KEY TO A GREAT CONVERSATION IS GENEROUS LISTENING. IT’S HARD TO SHOUT AND LISTEN AT THE SAME TIME. MY GRANDFATHER USED TO ALWAYS REMIND ME THAT I HAD ONE MOUTH AND TWO EARS FOR A REASON.
ongratulations on the publication of your new book. There doesn’t seem to be enough time in your schedule which is filled with your PBS series, speaking engagements and constant travel. How do you find time and the focus to write books like your newest one, “50 for Your Future: Lessons from Down the Road”?
With the explosion of social media being a constant in young people’s lives, opinions are hurled as quickly as the author can type the words. Too often opinions and accusations spread like wildfire. What lessons or advice can you give to help stem the tide of what seems to have become reckless and unethical use of instant communications?
IN A WORD, COMPARTMENTALIZATION. I ALSO HAVE A GREAT TEAM. IN THE NEW BOOK, I TALK ABOUT MY SKEPTICISM OF THE NOTION OF “BALANCE” IN OUR LIVES, BUT I DO BELIEVE WE CAN HARMONIZE THE DISSONANCE AND GET MUCH MORE ACCOMPLISHED THAN WE THINK.
THIS IS THE CHALLENGE OF OUR TIMES, TO CONTROL OUR INNOVATIONS AND NOT LET THEM CONTROL US. WHEN WE RUSH TO JUDGMENT IN THE ERA OF SOCIAL MEDIA, IT’S HARD TO WALK BACK WHAT’S ALREADY GONE AROUND THE WORLD.
At what point in your life did you have your ‘a-ha’ moment - where you realized you knew what you wanted to do? PRETTY EARLY. AS A TWELVE YEAR OLD KID GROWING UP HERE IN THE MIDWEST (INDIANA), I FELL IN LOVE WITH DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.’S NOTION OF THE “BELOVED COMMUNITY,” AND I KNEW THEN THAT I WANTED TO LOVE AND SERVE PEOPLE. PUBLIC MEDIA ALLOWS ME TO DO JUST THAT. You’ve had the benefit of great mentors in your personal and professional life. Is there any one nugget that helped shaped who you became more than any other? YES. WHEN I CAME TO UNDERSTAND THAT ‘LOVE’ MEANS THAT EVERYBODY IS WORTHY JUST BECAUSE. NOT BECAUSE OF PEDIGREE OR PRIVILEGE, BUT JUST BECAUSE. WE ARE ALL THE CHILDREN OF GOD, AND ALL LIFE IS EQUALLY PRECIOUS. You exude confidence and an unwavering stance for honesty. How did you achieve those traits? I DON’T HAVE A MONOPOLY ON THE TRUTH, BUT AT MY BEST, I ATTEMPT TO SEEK IT, SPEAK IT, STAND ON IT, AND STAY WITH IT. I BELIEVE THAT UNARMED TRUTH AND UNCONDITIONAL LOVE ARE THE HALLMARKS OF TRUE PUBLIC SERVANTS. Do you remember how you felt the first day your PBS series launched? RELIEVED! WHEN WE STARTED THIRTEEN YEARS AGO, WE STRUGGLED TO FIND UNDERWRITERS TO GET ON AIR. WHILE THAT FIGHT NEVER REALLY CEASES, I’M
Generous funding provided by : 4
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr had a profound effect on your life? What lessons did Dr. King teach you? THAT MY WORK AND WITNESS SHOULD ALWAYS BE FOCUSED ON JUSTICE FOR ALL, SERVICE TO OTHERS, AND A LOVE THAT LIBERATES PEOPLE. You have achieved what many only dream of doing and you continually encourage others to try their best. Do you know how many people have benefited from your efforts? ALL YOU EVER KNOW IS WHAT YOU’RE GIVING, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT PEOPLE ARE RECEIVING. I JUST TRY TO SOW SEEDS, AND HOPE THAT SOME OF WHAT’S PLANTED WILL ACTUALLY FLOWER AND FLOURISH. Tell us about your determination and initiative “Ending Poverty: America’s Silent Spaces”. POVERTY IS THREATENING OUR VERY DEMOCRACY. FRANKLY, POVERTY IS NOW A MATTER OF NATIONAL SECURITY. THIS DIVIDE BETWEEN THE RICH AND THE REST OF US IS NOT SUSTAINABLE. THIS EFFORT BY MY FOUNDATION SEEKS TO PUT THE ISSUES OF POVERTY, INCOME INEQUALITY, AND ECONOMIC IMMOBILITY HIGHER ON THE AMERICAN AGENDA, AND TO ULTIMATELY GET A GREATER COMMITMENT FROM INFLUENCERS AND POLICYMAKERS TO ERADICATE THEM IN OUR LIFETIMES.
You can be in the audience when Tavis Smiley visits Milwaukee Area Technical College's downtown campus on April 19th at 12:45 p.m. in the Cooley Auditorium. t’s more than a game, it’s a lesson for life. Played out on the fields between two iconic youth baseball programs in Milwaukee. The leagues, the BeckumStapleton Little League and the Felix Mantilla Little League, were both inspired by two hometown heroes and professional players. Wearing the uniform is considered a rite of passage for urban kids as they hone their skills in baseball and life itself.

FEATURED
ARTISTS Chuck Weber, of Waukesha, Wisconsin, is the Featured Artist for the Great TV Auction’s Sports Collection. Weber’s preference for oils and an impressionist style translate into high energy works and “MV3’s” is no exception. The piece features the three Green Bay Packer quarterbacks who have also earned the honor of being NFL MVPs. Brett Favre (#4) earned the title three times, current QB Aaron Rodgers (#12) has earned it twice, and the iconic Bart Starr (#15) has won once. Printing is donated by Modern Ink. To view more of Weber’s work, go to weberportraits.com or visit Gallery One of Waukesha.
James Meyer, of Port Washington, Wisconsin, is the Featured Artist for this year’s Poster Collection. The masterful way this photographer captures the sky’s natural light and how it plays with water enhances Southeastern Wisconsin’s part of the Lake Michigan shoreline in stunning beauty. This image, “Calatrava Drama”, is Meyer at his best. As evening comes over Milwaukee’s Calatrava, the last bright blue of the daytime sky hovers. Printing is donated by Brookstone Printing. To see more of James Meyer’s work, go to jamesmeyerphoto.com or visit the Pink Llama Gallery in Cedarburg, Wisconsin.
18
Tom Kubala, currently in Cedarburg, Wisconsin, is the Featured Artist for this year’s Wisconsin Collection. Kubala looks at the world with the eye of an architect where curves and turns give an image movement while colors and textures give it life. The glacial land of the Ridges Sanctuary at Bailey’s Harbor in Door County represented in “Ridges Reflected” drew him in with the rough grasses against the smooth-as-glass water and how they are in contrast to each other. Printing is donated by Burton and Meyer, Inc. To view more of Kubala’s work, go to tomkubala.com or visit the Pink Llama Gallery in Cedarburg.
Terry Doughty, of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, is the Featured Artist for this year’s Century Collection. Doughty began his love of painting on, of all places, a ship while serving in the US Navy. Over the years, he has refined his skill by focusing on different kinds of wildlife from ducks and pheasants to white-tailed deer to the animals of the African savannah. In “Voice of the Wilderness”, the viewer feels a part of the scenery while an alpha wolf howls at the sky and two members of his pack remain nearby. Doughty pays homage to the Native American tribes of Wisconsin by including both wolves and ravens in this work. Printing is donated by HM Graphics, Inc. To view more of Doughty’s work, go to terrydoughty.com or visit Gallery One of Waukesha.
Ramona Audley, a native of Pewaukee, Wisconsin, is the Featured Artist for the 2016 Studio Collection. Her collection, titled “It’s Just Fun!” bursts with color much like the artist herself. Audley, a retired art teacher, searches for “things that could end up in a landfill” and breathes new life into them with whimsical color and beautiful shapes that are born from her imagination. “It’s Just Fun!” includes a clownish dog and cartoonish pig, a floral frog with checked legs, a brightly plumed rooster, a snuggly kitten covered in blooms, a festive red pepper, a striped cat on wheels, and the happiest looking trophy fish you’ve ever seen. To view more of Audley’s work, visit her on Facebook or go to gallery1art.com and click on “Ramona Audley 3D Art”. 19
