HOPE IN THE STRUGGLE: THE JOSIE JOHNSON STORY
This documentary reflects on the life of freedom fighter and civic leader Dr. Josie Johnson, who fought for fair housing, education, and civil rights. Hear in her own words how her lived experiences turned her to activism, what meaningful action looks like, and how the next generation is taking up the mantle 2/3, 9PM 10.1
Welcome from Debbie Hamlett
This
month we celebrate the invaluable contributions and rich cultural heritage of African Americans. Through powerful programs and stories, we bring to light the inspiring individuals and movements that helped shape our nation.
GREAT MIGRATIONS: A PEOPLE ON THE MOVE, a new docuseries from Henry Louis Gates. “It wasn’t just a seismic historical event; it’s an ongoing story,” said Gates. “Our series focuses on three dramatic migrations that have profoundly shaped the African American experience, and redefined what it means to be ‘Black’ in this country.”
Milwaukee PBS’s local program BLACK NOUVEAU will present a new program, MILWAUKEE’S MIGRATION FAMILIES. Between 1916 and 1970, roughly six million African-Americans living in the South uprooted their families to migrate to cities in the west and north. We’ll talk with first-and second-generation Milwaukeeans to hear their stories and how those moves affected their families.
We’re honored to bring you programs you count on –from trusted news, documentaries, cooking, science, and nature to arts and culture just to name a few. PBS children’s programs represent a large commitment to our communities with more than 9,000 hours of researched educational content.
Beloved shows like SESAME STREET and CURIOUS GEORGE, ALMA’S WAY, DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD and many others make learning fun while teaching critical skills like literacy, problem-solving, empathy, and resilience. We’re proud to say PBS is leading the way with a new innovative series, CARL THE COLLECTOR, the series main character is autistic. Keep an eye out for a CARL THE COLLECTOR event we’ll do in the near future.
Public Media plays a vital role in educating, uplifting and connecting communities- your continued support helps make this possible. Thank you! Together, we foster understanding and life-long learning.
With appreciation,
Debbie Hamlett Vice President and General Manager
On the LOCAL SCENE
Milwaukee’s Migration Families
Between 1916 and 1970, roughly six million African-Americans living in the South uprooted their families to migrate to cities in the West and North. They came seeking the promise of a better life; escape from racial violence, better jobs, higher wages, and better educational opportunities. Milwaukee and Wisconsin began to feel the shift in the 1940s. Just before WWII, Milwaukee’s Black population totaled about 1.5 percent. By 1950 that number had increased to 3.5 percent, approximately 22,000 people. By 1970 the number had ballooned to 103,000 people, and by the turn of the century, Milwaukee’s Black population exceeded 200,000 people.
MILWAUKEE’S MIGRATION FAMILIES, talks with Black residents who left the South for a better life; and first and second generation Milwaukeeans currently living here to find out whether things actually improved for them by coming here. Watch Tuesday, February 18 at 9PM on 10.1.
Coming this February,
Two New Digital Series!
MOVERS AND SHAKERS profiles the influential leaders, innovators and change-makers who have shaped the future of Milwaukee. Each segment highlights the stories of local visionaries who have made a lasting impact across business, culture, social justice and beyond. ODE MILWAUKEE celebrates the small wonders of Milwaukee, proving that sometimes the little things are the biggest reasons why we love it here. This essay-based project will toast everything from the quirky and kitsch to the mundane and magical, capturing the essence of Milwaukee's unique character through its hidden gems, local traditions and the everyday moments that make this city feel like home.
You will be able to watch these series once available on MilwaukeePBS.org or youtube.com/@MilwaukeePBS.
MOVERS AND SHAKERS will profile local legends like Jimmy Banks, who grew up in the Westlawn housing projects and went on to play for the United States national soccer team in the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

GREAT MIGRATIONS: A PEOPLE ON THE MOVE
The series tells the story of African American movement over the 20th and 21st centuries, and how it has shaped our nation by exploring the meaning behind those movements. What political or economic pressures inspire people to move? Is it more often inspired by hope or fear? Is there even such a thing as a promised land? GREAT MIGRATIONS is directed by Julia Marchesi and Nailah Ife Sims, who also serve as producers of the series. Dyllan McGee serves as executive producer, along with Gates.
Since the beginning of human existence, movement has defined how we evolved and created identities, communities, and nations-states. Migration is not unique to any single ethnicity or group, but it is a deeply profound aspect of the modern African American experience simply because Black people were denied movement for so long. Theirs was a forced migration from Africa, followed by centuries of enslavement that kept them in place. In being denied movement, they were denied their humanity.
After emancipation, the migratory spirit took hold in this new space of freedom, and many African Americans uprooted themselves from all that was familiar to move to northern cities (sometimes stopping first in southern cities) to build entirely new lives – a decision that dramatically changed the fabric of American culture and society. It was an epic migration of people that began in the late 19th century when it was clear that the early promises of Reconstruction would not be fulfilled, and
accelerated as the century progressed. Underlying this courageous act was the abiding belief in American opportunity, as well as a belief in their own capacity to better their lives, and the lives of their children. In some ways, it has never really ended.
Throughout GREAT MIGRATIONS, Gates, the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University and director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, interviews dozens of journalists, scholars, professors, and experts. The series includes notable figures including political leader Stacey Abrams, artist George F. Baker III, journalist Charles Blow, and more.
“The Great Migration was not just a seismic historical event; it’s an ongoing story," said Gates. "Our series focuses on three dramatic migrations that have profoundly shaped the African American experience, and redefined what it means to be ‘Black’ in this country: the great migration from the Deep South to the North and West; the reverse migration back to the South, and most recently the astonishing large migration of Africans and West Indians to this country in recent decades. In fact, more Africans migrated to the United States in a ten-year period than were forcibly shipped here over the entire course of the slave trade! Our series is the first to explore these three mass movements of Black human beings to this country, and what that has meant for the reshaping of American culture.”

Kathy McCabe, host and creator of the popular Dream of Italy, guides viewers from London to Athens in the new travel series, DREAM OF EUROPE. Kathy takes her proven formula of authenticity with a dash of star power to a broader geographic area and explores history, culture and adventures in European destinations. The first episode focuses on London, where Kathy, composer Alessandro Roveri, and a group of musicians record the theme song to DREAM OF EUROPE at the iconic Abbey Road Studios (where the Beatles recorded most of their songs). Other episodes shift the focus to Lake Annecy in France, the island of Malta, various Greek Islands, Athens and Albania. Americans are traveling to Europe in record numbers, and DREAM OF EUROPE offers viewers a helpful resource for planning their European travels.

Building Your Child’s Confidence, One Step at a
Time
As parents, we want our kids to feel self-confident and believe in themselves. At the same time, all parents worry — about skills they're still learning, milestones they haven’t reached, or the social or emotional challenges they’re facing.
So how can we help our kids focus on their strengths and build that same sense of self-confidence? Here are four ideas to get you started.
1
Tell Them What You See Kids thrive when they feel seen. When we notice and name their strengths, we can help them build the confidence they need to tackle challenges. At night or over breakfast, name “one good thing” that you noticed. These can be simple, like how they put their shoes on by themselves or how gently they played with their sibling.
When my kids were little, I’d often say, “You are kind and brave.” This mantra reminded me to look for moments when they treated others with compassion or faced

their fears. Then, I’d point out those moments by saying something like, “You tried again after falling off the monkey bars. That was brave.”

Zoom in On Strengths When kids face something new or challenging, they often focus on what they can’t do. For example, a child nervous about their first basketball practice might feel overwhelmed by the whole scene — the hoop, the fast movement of other kids, the size of the court — and think, “I can’t do this.”

That’s when we can step in and help them zoom in on what they can do. This can boost their confidence enough to take the first step. For instance: "I don’t know how to shoot a layup yet, but I do know how to dribble, so I can start with that.”
3
Celebrate Each Step You can’t learn a new skill without making mistakes! As Carl’s pal Nico learns, no one learns to ride a bike without taking a few falls. When Nico feels discouraged, her sister reminds her that learning is a step-by-step process. Show your child that you can celebrate each step along the way. This might sound like:
“Tying your shoes is tricky! But you’ve already learned the first two steps, so now we just need to practice the last one.’
4
Tell Them Stories About Their Growth Children are constantly building a story about themselves: who they are, what they like, and what they can do. They also love to hear stories about themselves. Reminisce about when they were little (even if they are
still young!) and share memories that highlight their growth. What are things they can do now that they couldn’t do a few months ago? Can they dribble a soccer ball? Reach the top shelf? Walk the dog? Express how they’re feeling?
When we celebrate the small ways our kids are growing, we help nurture their confidence and remind them that they’re becoming stronger and more capable every day!
