Welcome from Debbie Hamlett
Proposed
cuts to CPB funding threaten the vital services we provide—trusted educational programs for kids, local storytelling, and emergency alerts. Your voice matters. Contact your legislators today and tell them why Milwaukee PBS is essential to you and our community.
Public media is for everyone. It’s free, and accessible. No other media source shares our mission of providing no-cost, commercialfree, local service to every community – rural and urban, wealthy and underserved. We’re not driven by profits and advertisers, we’re driven by a commitment to serve you— our neighbors. This commitment is what makes public media unique.
Families trust us to educate their children. We provide trusted, safe, researched and non-commercial programs for children. The early years in a child’s life are the most transformative and essential to laying the groundwork for later success in life. All parents want what’s best for their children and to help them to learn and grow. Did you know that more than half of America’s children don’t have access to formal pre-kindergarten programs? PBS KIDS helps prepare kids for success in school and in life so that every child can see the world as full of possibilities.
We are community driven. Milwaukee PBS staff live and work in the same communities we serve. Our local programs like ADELANTE (25th season), BLACK NOUVEAU (32nd season), THE ARTS PAGE (11th season), RHYTHM CAFE MKE, HOW WE HEAL and notable documentaries like, A HALLOWED HOME FOR HEROES, and THE GREAT CIRCUS PARADE inspire, educate and connect people from all walks of life.
So, the next time you watch Milwaukee PBS for your favorite program, or a beloved children’s show, or catch yourself talking to a friend about something you’ve seen, remember this – public media isn’t just a channel or a station, It’s a shared investment in the strength and future of our community.
We’re proud to be part of your lives, and deeply grateful for your support in serving Milwaukee and southeastern Wisconsin. Together, we can ensure public media continues to highlight our community’s unique places, people and culture and remains a cornerstone for generations to come.
Thank you,
Debbie Hamlett Vice President and General Manager

TRACTOR WARS
Traces the evolution of mechanical farming and chronicles the fight between three companies to build the first all-purpose tractor. For thousands of years, farming was driven by the muscle of either animals or humans. With the invention of the steam engine, industrialists brought steam power to farms. Then, inventions such as the reaper and steel plow catalyzed a rush to mechanize farming. By the 1920s, John Deere, Ford and International Harvester had emerged as leaders in the battle to develop a reliable tractor that would become part of everyday agriculture. By 1929, these three were among the few dozen companies that remained, but the tractor form people recognize today had finally emerged and began rapidly replacing muscle as the primary source of power on the farm.

CORONATION GIRLS In the summer of 1953, philanthropist Garfield Weston put together a sponsorship to send 50 girls from rural communities across Canada to visit London. They were soon standing in Oxford Street to witness the coronation procession of Queen Elizabeth. Witnessing a princess becoming the queen of England transformed them instantly and forever. The elements of character they saw in her, a young woman so close in age to themselves who took on the weight of the Crown, inspired them and shaped a way of being that has guided their lives. Featuring guest appearances by actor Richard E. Grant and His Majesty King Charles III, CORONATION GIRLS includes interviews with a number of the women who participated in the trip and follows them as they return one last time to Buckingham Palace. 3/17, 9PM 10.1

THE BLACK SOX SCANDAL: AMERICAN STORIES
It was the most notorious scandal in the history of professional sports: eight Chicago White Sox players were charged with throwing the World Series in 1919. THE BLACK SOX SCANDAL: AMERICAN STORIES explores how and why these athletes, including "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, worked together to betray their teammates and fans for a risky payout. The film examines how their wild scheme came to light as well as the events that followed. The hour-long documentary also seeks to dispel myths about the team's then-owner, Charles Comiskey, while exploring the scandal's lingering impact on the modern-day game. 3/24, 9PM 10.1

Best Benefits of Playing Video Games Together
If your kids are like mine, they love playing video games! Joining them is a great way to connect and create a shared experience with my kids. While we play, I learn from them, hear their thoughts, and cheer them on!
“We know that games are the number one activity for kids on mobile, tablet, and desktop,” said Abby Jenkins, Senior Director of Content for PBS KIDS. She and her team make fun educational video games that help kids learn social and emotional learning, problem-solving, and computational thinking skills. “We’re focused on helping kids find content that they love and want to play but in service of those key learning goals.”

Games are a great time to bond as a family. Playing video games together can be a great way to bond as a family. You can navigate different challenges, take turns, and share helpful tips. It’s fun to see my son show his little sister how to get through a tricky part of a game or hear her encourage him. For me and my husband, it can also be fun to relive our own childhood memories as we dust off some of the same video games we played as kids to now play with our children. Playing together instead of letting young children play alone. “If you engage with them, you can be the voice of reason.”
2Games can have educational benefits. Video games can build on what kids are already learning and doing, from finding patterns to making artistic

creations. Some educational video games promote memory or problem-solving skills. Other video games focus on creating and working together.

Games encourage learning through play. When playing, kids can explore another imaginative world or scenario. Some educational games help show the perspective of the character in the game. Helping other characters to meet their needs in the game can build empathy.
Here’s a list of PBS KIDS Games to play together:
Arthur vs. D.W.: Have a little sibling competition going on in your house? Take it to the court and see if you can send the most socks to the basket in this two-player game.

DID YOU KNOW?
OnJanuary 18th, John Asmus posted a recent picture of the station's first remote television truck on the Facebook group Eyesofageneration.com. It is currently located in a salvage yard near Angelica, New York. This truck was purchased in 1961 and was named “Lightning” because of its chrome lighting accents. So, how did it end up in New York? We believe the truck was sold to Buffalo Toronto Public Media WNED when WMVS purchased a different truck in the early 1970s.

JOSEPH CAMPBELL AND THE POWER OF MYTH WITH BILL MOYERS
In the beloved 1988 series JOSEPH CAMPBELL AND THE POWER OF MYTH WITH BILL MOYERS, mythologist and storyteller Joseph Campbell joins journalist Bill Moyers to explore what enduring myths can tell us about our lives. In each of the six episodes Moyers and Campbell focus on a character or theme found in cultural and religious mythologies. Campbell argues that these timeless archetypes continue to have a powerful influence on the choices we make and the ways we live.
