Letter from

Bohdan Zachary & Kim Sosa In all its forms, art dominates the programs on Milwaukee PBS this month. Most prominently featured is a new 9-part series, Civilizations, premiering April 17th on Channel 10. Inspired by Kenneth Clark’s 1969 series, Civilisation, this new series surveys the history of art and its role in how it shapes so many different cultures and civilizations all over the world. Drawing from ancient works, and including commentary from some of the most well-known contemporary artists and scholars, Civilizations will not only examine the creative process, but will teach us about who we are today. The dramatic arts are always a staple on Milwaukee PBS, especially on Sunday nights. And, on April 1st, Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch returns to star in an adaptation of Ian McEwan’s acclaimed novel, “The Child in Time”. Cumberbatch stars as Stephen Lewis, a noted children’s book author, and Kelly Macdonald plays his wife, Julie, a professional musician. They are the doting parents of Kate (Beatrice White), an impish four-year-old, their only child. Then one day Kate mysteriously disappears during a shopping outing with Stephen. It’s every parent’s worst nightmare, and it upends Stephen and Julie’s lives in extraordinary ways. When it comes to performing arts, Milwaukee PBS’ very own production, The Arts Page has a very special episode featuring a collaboration between the Florentine Opera Company and SHARP Literacy this month. On ”A Busy Bee” – The Making of a Children’s Opera, host Sandy Maxx takes us behind

2

the scenes of the Florentine’s newest one-act opera for children based on the SHARP Literacy’s “We Love to Learn” book. Tune in April 26th at 9:00 p.m. to discover the talent it takes to bring a literary character to life on stage. Local art will be on display during Milwaukee PBS’ Great TV Auction, celebrating its 50th Anniversary this month. Maintaining its roots in presenting unique art and artists on the Great TV Auction, we’ve got a great group of individuals who have created exclusive pieces for this year’s event. Visit greattvauction.com to see them and find out how to bid to win! In addition to the featured art, you’ll also discover so many other unique items and experiences when you tune in starting April 27th on Channel 36. Thank you for celebrating art, in all its forms, as a member of Milwaukee PBS. Thank you

a Nine-Part Global Series Exploring the Power of Art From Earliest Civilizations to the Present CIVILIZATIONS will premiere on Milwaukee PBS on Tuesday, April 17th, 7:00 p.m., with the

I

next four episodes airing Tuesdays through May 15th. Four more episodes will air in June.

nspired by Civilisation, Kenneth Clark’s acclaimed landmark 1969 series about Western art, this bold new series from Nutopia broadens the canvas to reveal the role art and the creative imagination have played across multiple cultures and civilizations, introducing a new generation to works of beauty, ingenuity and illumination created across continents. From the landscape scrolls of classical China and the sculpture of the Olmecs to African bronzes, Japanese prints and French Impressionist paintings, CIVILIZATIONS explores the wealth of treasures created through the entirety of the human experience. In nine episodes, CIVILIZATIONS travels across the globe, visiting such cultural landmarks as the great mosques of Istanbul, the ancient cities of Mesoamerica, the Buddhist caves of Ajanta in India, the Aztecs’ Templo Mayor in modern Mexico City and the funeral site of China’s first emperor. CIVILIZATIONS explores a sweeping range of topics, including the earliest human cultural artifacts and the representation of the body in art, what happens when different civilizations encounter each other, and the nature of “renaissances” around the world. Underlying the series is an exploration of the premise that it is through the creative imagination that humanity expresses its most essential self and looks for the fundamental meaning of life. Artists such as Kehinde Wiley, Michal Rovner and Anselm Kiefer, Kara Walker, Richard Misrach, Antony Gormley, Bill Viola, Kira Perov, Cai Guo-Qiang and Damien Hirst add additional commentary and context to this creative exploration. “CIVILIZATIONS is an awe-inspiring, gorgeously conceived examination of how humans are intimately connected through time, space and culture by a deep, instinctual drive to create,” said Bill Gardner, Vice President, Programming and Development, PBS. “In a time when we often seem distant from each other, the series is an inspiring reminder that we share deeper emotional, cultural and spiritual bonds than we often realize. Art is the index of our humanity, and PBS is extremely proud to present CIVILIZATIONS as the cornerstone of its arts programming this spring.” Using the latest film technology, CIVILIZATIONS is filmed on six continents: Africa, Asia, Australasia (Australia, New Zealand, and neighboring islands in the South Pacific Ocean), Europe, and North and South America. State-of-the-art drone and camera movement technology, as well as macro-photography, allow viewers to immerse themselves in the extraordinary locations and see the world’s treasures in new ways, bringing remote objects up close in order to celebrate detail, craftsmanship and artistry as never before. From the stained glass windows of Chartres cathedral to Matisse’s cardboard cut-outs, from the great dome of the Suleymaniye mosque to the paintings of the Dutch Golden Age, from Hokusai’s Wave to Monet’s Rouen cathedral series, CIVILIZATIONS goes inside some of the world’s greatest museums, historic locations, cathedrals and mosques to provide viewers special access to priceless works of art and architecture. Jonty Claypole, Director of Arts for BBC said: “The BBC is delighted to be working with Nutopia and PBS on this truly landmark series. Inspired by Kenneth Clark’s series 50 years ago, Civilizations shows that the story of art and culture is that of civilization itself - and that through art and culture we find more than beauty but the very essence of what it means to be human.”

4

Jane Root, CEO Nutopia said: “Civilizations is a truly epic series, filmed across six continents. It combines stunning cinematography with high-end, informative documentary and a real sense of drama. It’s been a labour of love for more than five years for Nutopia and we couldn’t be more delighted with the partnership with the BBC and PBS.”

Nova Wonders: What are Animals Saying?

“Talking to the animals” has long been the stuff of fairy tales and every kid’s fantasy. But today scientists are finally beginning to unravel the codes of animal communication. Around the world, they’re deciphering an amazing array of clues - from spider thumps to whale songs - revealing how animals share information that’s critical to their survival. Will we be able to write the bat dictionary - or decode the hidden language of chimps? And what might these exotic vocalizations teach us about the roots of our language?

on the local scene 10thirtysix™ In March 2017, 10thirtysix broadcast a special live edition that offered answers to some of the issues of lead in drinking water (and elsewhere) facing Milwaukee. This month, 10thirtysix offers a follow-up to Lead & Our Health to help answer the questions that continue to face our community. Adelante! She played Maria on Sesame Street for 45 years, and is one of the most influential Latina role-models in television history. Actress Sonia Manzano talks with Adelante! about her challenges and achievements. Around The Corner with John McGivern™ Plateville’s past is truly interesting, but it’s the present that made memories for John. He played sheepshead, pitched horseshoes, visited an Amish tobacco farm, toured the most beautiful mansion in town and so much more. Black Nouveau previews Milwaukee native John Ridley, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of 12 Years a Slave, sits down with Black Nouveau and discusses the current state of black filmmaking as well as the Milwaukee Arts Hub. Outdoor Wisconsin Dan Small goes on a winter crossbow hunt with Dr. Matt Andrews and learns about deer habitat management. The 34th season of Outdoor Wisconsin wraps up at UW-Waukesha, featuring the students who work to preserve native plants and animals, continuing the vision of one man’s 50 year project. The Arts Page “A Busy Bee” Is the newest operatic production by the Florentine Opera Company. This original one-act opera is based on the SHARP Literacy “We Love to Learn” book that tells the story of Bella the honeybee, who tries to find her place in the hive and the lessons she learns along the way. We step behind the scenes of the collaboration that brings this local children’s book to life on the stage.
