NADIYA UKRAINE: THE NATIONAL BALLET LIVE FROM STEINMETZ HALL

A historic performance by the National Ballet of Ukraine from the Taras Shevchenko National Opera House. Accompanied by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, this monumental performance brings together Ukraine and America united for the hope of Ukrainian independence through the power of art. 4/1,

Welcome from Debbie Hamlett

Last month I attended America’s Public Television Stations Summit in Washington D.C. It’s always an honor to visit our nation's capital and talk with our legislators about the value of PBS, specifically Milwaukee PBS. Did you know? Public media stations play an essential role in supporting first responders in emergency alert systems. Our broadcast towers provide a reliable network backbone in times of public safety emergencies.

For twenty-one consecutive years, public television has ranked as the most trusted institution in America. The purpose of public media is public service, we build community, educate and connect. 85% of parents agree that PBS Kids is a safe and trusted source of information.

Senator Tammy Baldwin was awarded the 2024 Champion of Public Broadcasting award from APTS. “Senator Baldwin has been a stalwart and effective champion of public broadcasting in countless ways for decades,” said APTS president and CEO Patrick Butler. “She recognizes the valuable services public broadcasting provides to the people of Wisconsin and throughout our nation, and how vital it is to safeguard the highly cost-effective federal investments in public broadcasting’s essential public safety, education and civic leadership services. And she has dramatically demonstrated that bipartisanship can flourish even in challenging budgetary and political conditions when talented lawmakers wish to make it so.”

Check out A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE FUTURE, a unique 6-part documentary series about our futures and how we can reimagine them. Hosted by renowned futurist Ari Wallach, the show invites viewers on a journey around the world that is filled with discovery, hope, and possibility about where we find ourselves today and what could come next.

Thank you if you made an additional pledge of support last month. We continue to be thankful for your investment in Milwaukee PBS. It’s amazing what we can accomplish together!

with appreciation,

Rhythm Cafe MKE Spotlights Local Artists

Grab a front row seat to some terrific local performers with Milwaukee PBS’ digital first series RHYTHM CAFE MKE. Not quite a year old, this popular series showcases some of the city’s most talented artists. The station records the series at Anodyne Coffee Roasting Co. Each episode features exclusive, original, up-close and personal performances and profiles.

April features a variety of soundscapes from four local artists. Walt Hamburger’s songs range from heart-felt ballads to rock ‘n roll and everything in between. With the ability to move from hyperpop to indie to neo-soul, *aya can’t be confined to one genre. Raf focuses on writing songs true to experience with a style that blends storytelling verses and dense vocal harmonies with a classic rock sound. And Bisca Rae is a rising singer songwriter. Her music walks the line of many genres floating between styles and blending them to create her own distinctive sound. Be sure and check out this exciting digital series. New episodes drop Mondays and Thursdays. Watch at milwaukeepbs.org/RCMKE or with the PBS App

ADELANTE The April episode introduces us to the mayor of Fitchburg, Julia Arata-Fratta. We talk about children, youth and social media with Psychotherapist Paula Ortega-Jenna. Milwaukee PBS’ ADELANTE continues to cover key issues related to the presidential election.

BLACK NOUVEAU meets a local fitness instructor using her own experience with bulimia to break the silence around eating disorders in young girls and women of color. We preview the upcoming Milwaukee Film Festival, and profile costume designer Yvonne L. Martinez, who recently designed the costumes for The Lighting Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical at First Stage Children’s Theater and Nina Simone: Four Women coming to the Milwaukee Rep later this month.

JOHN MCGIVERN’S MAIN STREETS This month John, Emmy and the crew visit Austin, Minnesota; Greater Lafayette, Indiana; Madison, Wisconsin and finish the season with what they are calling the Studio Show which captures some of the funniest moments that happened while shooting this season of Main Streets.

ELTON JOHN BERNIE TAUPIN

Receive the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song

PBS to Premiere Concert Special on April 8

Elton John and Bernie Taupin, one of the great songwriting duos of all time, will be the 2024 recipients of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular. The prize is named for another legendary songwriting team, George and Ira Gershwin, whose papers are held by the Library.

A once-in-a-lifetime meeting between John, a young piano player, and lyricist Taupin together in 1967, they have forged a songwriting partnership that continues after more than 50 years. Their process seems simple: Taupin writes lyrics and sends them to John who goes to work at the piano and creates a song.

“Elton John and Bernie Taupin have written some of the most memorable songs of our lives. Their careers stand out for the quality and broad appeal of their music and their influence on their fellow artists,” Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden said. “More than 50 years ago, they came from across the pond to win over Americans and audiences worldwide with their beautiful songs and rock anthems. We’re proud to honor Elton and Bernie with the Gershwin Prize for their incredible impact on generations of music lovers.”

"I've been writing songs with Bernie for 56 years, and we never thought that that one day this might be bestowed upon us,” Elton John said. “It's an incredible honor for two British guys to be recognized like this. I’m so honored.”

"To be in a house along with the great American songwriters, to even be in the same avenue is humbling, and I am absolutely thrilled to accept," Bernie Taupin said. APRIL 8 8PM CH 10.1

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: Rachelle Abrams & Sam Wiesenberg

Millennial Couple Love Being Milwaukee PBS Donors

Rachelle Abrams and Sam Wiesenberg are not your usual Milwaukee PBS Donors. The millennial couple, who are proud dog parents, are transplants to Milwaukee who have found the city to be a hidden gem of the Midwest.

Sam works in sales for a national steel building manufacturer and it’s his job that brought the couple to Milwaukee in 2018 when they first became Milwaukee PBS members. During the pandemic Rachelle discovered that working at home for a large national bank didn’t make her happy any longer. She now works for Simma’s Bakery and finds satisfaction helping people put together desserts for special celebrations.

They both grew up on PBS programming for kids. Rachelle particularly liked SESAME STREET and ZOOM. Sam also liked SESAME STREET and MISTER ROGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD. Currently Rachelle likes a wide range of PBS programs including THIS OLD HOUSE and her favorite PBS MASTERPIECE. A self-professed history nerd, Sam likes AMERICAN EXPERIENCE and any Ken Burns special.

ASK THIS OLD HOUSE

Richard praises the marvel of modern plumbing, then retrofits a radiant floor system; Nathan explains cable railing connections and maintenance; Jenn shares the updated USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map.

4/11, 8:30PM 10.1

The couple also enjoy Milwaukee PBS’ local content. Sam said, “It’s important to have content that has a local focus. Getting to watch shows about local events, local history, or local personalities helps stitch the community together.”

They both think donating to Milwaukee PBS is important and that it provides great benefits. “It’s a way to gain access to Milwaukee PBS Passport so I can enjoy all of the programs when it’s convenient for me,” explained Rachelle.

The pair have also discovered exciting travel with Milwaukee PBS. They joined Milwaukee PBS for the All Creatures Great and Small England Trip last summer. Sam and Rachelle said their trip was phenomenal. Rachelle said, “It was definitely one of the best trips of my life. I have truly fallen in love with Milwaukee and PBS, combining these two is magical.”

Imaginative Play with Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood

Make sure you give your children lots of “pretend” time. Some kids will want to dress up in different clothes, while others prefer puppets or small toys as a way to express their feelings and ideas or to explore new things they are wondering about.

When kids pretend, they can explore what it means to be a grownup, superhero, or princess, or what it might feel like to magically be bigger and stronger.

Parents can create a dress up corner for their children with a few costumes and props. Things as simple as a big box can stimulate kids’ imagination. A box can be a car or a house or even a zoo. It’s all up to the children. You can provide support for your child’s imaginative play with a special Daniel Tiger game called Let’s Make Believe. Here is the link for this game and others: pbskids.org/daniel/games/lets-make-believe

MR. BATES VS THE POST OFFICE

Binge all 4 episodes of this series.

Available 4/7

When money started to seemingly disappear from its local branches, the government-owned Post Office wrongly blamed their own managers for its apparent loss. For more than a decade, hundreds were accused of theft and fraud, and many were even sent to prison - leaving lives, marriages, and reputations in ruins. But the issue was actually caused by errors in the Post Office’s own computer system - something it denied for years.

GUILT Season 3
