his month we would like to recognize the We Energies Foundation as one of the production underwriting sponsors of Around the Corner with John McGivern, Season 4. The popular program features Rhinelander, Milwaukee’s Upper East Side and East Troy during the month of April – three of the 13 Wisconsin communities highlighted this season. Around the Corner with John McGivern, Season 4, airs on Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. on Channel 10 and Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. on Channel 36. The We Energies Foundation, formerly the Wisconsin Energy Foundation, was established in 1982 to help improve the quality of life in communities across the We Energies service area. Since its inception over 30 years ago, the We Energies Foundation has invested more than $143 million in support of initiatives that promote education, economic health, arts and culture, and the environment. In 2014 alone, the foundation provided grants to nearly 790 organizations contributing to the health and well-being of communities across the region. Through its grants and contributions, the We Energies Foundation has created brighter futures for the towns and cities throughout Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Funding for initiatives supported by the We Energies Foundation is derived from the stockholder portion of earnings and dividends paid by Wisconsin Energy Corporation. Grants do not affect the profitability of Wisconsin Energy Corporation nor are they reflected in the prices customers pay for services from We Energies. “We’re pleased to support Milwaukee Public Television and Around the Corner with John McGivern, Season 4. The program showcases all that makes Wisconsin a great place to live and work,” said Susan Martin, executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of Wisconsin Energy. MPTV is glad to welcome the We Energies Foundation as one of our newest underwriters. We greatly appreciate their sponsorship of Around the Corner with John McGivern, Season 4, and their commitment to MPTV. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV. Contact Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu or (414) 297-8008.

his month's Fine Tuning presented editor Paul Fedor with a problem: what to put on the cover with so many strong programs premiering in April? We are proud of our longstanding relationship with the area's foremost contemporary historian, John Gurda, and delighted to broadcast his new documentary, MILWAUKEE: A CITY BUILT ON WATER, Wednesday, April 22nd, at 8 p.m. on Channel 10. Acknowledging that Lake Michigan and the rivers that feed it are the city’s dominant natural resources, John details how our waterways have served us and weathered heavy usage to emerge as points of both concern and celebration in the 21st century. You’re invited to join us for a screening of the program on Tuesday evening, April 7th, at Discovery World in Milwaukee. Certainly an important program – but not on the cover. Also not on the cover is WOLF HALL, the new MASTERPIECE, premiering Sunday, April 5th, at 9 p.m. on Channel 10. Fresh from the hit drama “Homeland,” Emmy-nominated Damian Lewis stars as Henry VIII opposite onetime Milwaukee resident Mark Rylance as Thomas Cromwell in the much anticipated adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s Man Booker Prize-winning novels. WOLF HALL charts the meteoric rise of Cromwell, from his lowly start as a blacksmith’s son to Henry VIII’s closest advisor. MPTV’s biggest annual fundraising event is THE GREAT TV AUCTION, which begins on April 27th and runs through May 2nd on Channel 10, mptv.org, and MPTV Mobile. The largest broadcast auction on public TV in the country, raising upwards of $1 million each year, THE AUCTION is certainly worthy of the cover of Fine Tuning - and so it will be: but not until next month! As it turns out, Paul made an excellent choice for the April cover: the Oscar-nominated documentary film LAST DAYS

IN VIETNAM. Called “a masterpiece” by The New Yorker, it tells the gripping story of American soldiers, their families, and their South Vietnamese allies, huddling for safety in the U.S. Embassy in Saigon and then airlifted out by Marine helicopters during the chaotic last days of the Vietnam War. Except, not all escaped. Filmmaker Rory Kennedy’s powerful production premieres Tuesday, April 28th, at 8 p.m. on Channel 36. Complementing LAST DAYS IN VIETNAM in the schedule are several other Vietnam-oriented programs including the MPTV production A BRIDGE TO VIETNAM, THE DAY THE 60’s DIED, DICK CAVETT’S VIETNAM, MY LAI: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, and THE DRAFT. In A BRIDGE TO VIETNAM, Wednesday, April 22nd, at 9:30 p.m. on Channel 36, Mark Siegrist reports on ways Wisconsinites have been reestablishing personal and business ties with Vietnamese citizens. So, lots of great television in April. And don't forget to bid high and bid often on THE GREAT TV AUCTION! Your purchases help fund the production and acquisition of programs all year long on MPTV.

pril 1975. During the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, as the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon, South Vietnamese resistance crumbled. City after city and village after village fell to the North while the few U.S. diplomats and military operatives still in the country contemplated withdrawal. With the lives of thousands of South Vietnamese hanging in the balance, those in control faced an impossible choice––who would go and who would be left behind to face brutality, imprisonment or even death. Directed by Rory Kennedy and airing in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, “Last Days in Vietnam” premieres on AMERICAN EXPERIENCE on Tuesday, April 28th, 8:00-10:00 p.m. on Channel 36. The 1973 Paris Peace Accords had forged a tenuous ceasefire between North and South Vietnam, and mandated the removal of almost all U.S. forces. Following this latest ceasefire violation, President Gerald Ford asked Congress for an emergency appropriation to aid the beleaguered South Vietnamese government. The White House expected that neither Congress nor the American people would support a reengagement in Vietnam. Says then-Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, “We knew we were not going to get the $722 million. By that time, it made no big difference, [but] President Ford said first he owed it to Vietnam to make a request.” By early March 1975, huge swaths of territory were overrun daily and, by the end of the month, the North Vietnamese Army had surrounded the capital, preparing to launch its final assault on Saigon––11 months ahead of schedule. To the U.S. diplomats and military operatives still in Saigon, one thing was clear—a Communist victory was inevitable. The Americans grew increasingly concerned for the safety of their South Vietnamese allies, co-workers and 4
friends who faced imprisonment or possibly death in the event of a North Vietnamese victory. As the North Vietnamese troops drew dangerously close to Saigon, U.S. Ambassador Graham Martin, himself the father of a fallen Vietnam veteran, steadfastly refused to discuss an evacuation, both for fear of panicking the South Vietnamese population and out of a stubborn reluctance to admit defeat. With the clock ticking and the city under fire, American officers on the ground found themselves faced with a moral dilemma: whether to follow official policy and evacuate U.S. citizens and their dependents only, or to ignore their orders and save the Vietnamese men, women and children they had come to value and love in their years in Vietnam. At the risk of their careers and possible courts-martial, a handful of individuals took matters into their own hands. Engaging in unsanctioned and often makeshift operations, they waged a desperate effort to evacuate as many South Vietnamese as possible. In the days leading up to the final attack, U.S. Army Captain Stuart Herrington was one of a number of
American officers who bypassed the ambassador and organized a “black op” evacuation effort, transporting his South Vietnamese contacts to an airbase and sneaking them aboard an outbound U.S. cargo flights to the Philippines. As the situation became increasingly dire, Department of Defense official and former Navy officer Richard Armitage arrived by plane in Saigon. In consultation with his former counterpart, South Vietnamese Navy Captain Kiem Do, Armitage developed a plan to remove U.S. Navy ships before they fell into Communists’ hands. When evacuation day came, Armitage discovered the Vietnamese sailors had packed the ships with nearly 30,000 South Vietnamese refugees. Recalls Armitage, “I thought it was a lot easier to beg forgiveness than to get permission. So the decision was made.” On April 29, the Saigon airport was attacked, forcing an immediate evacuation. Floating offshore in the South China Sea was the U.S.S. Kirk, part of the fleet sent to facilitate the evacuation of Americans. The crew and the ship––with its single, tiny helipad––was entirely unprepared for the role it was about to play in the scramble to evacuate the city. Soon, a seemingly unending stream of helicopters, piloted not by Americans, but by South Vietnamese airmen fleeing for their lives with their families and friends, descended upon the American destroyer. However, most of the action on that final, fateful day took place at the besieged U.S. Embassy in Saigon, where thousands of South Vietnamese hoping to secure a lastminute evacuation scaled the walls while a U.S. intelligence analyst ran his own underground railroad of evacuees to barges on the Saigon River. In the final hours of the evacuation, Ambassador Graham Martin used American resources meant for his own protection to extract thousands of South Vietnamese during an 18-hour airlift from the embassy compound. In conjunction with the film, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE is launching a national outreach campaign, bringing together Vietnamese Americans, veterans and their communities to share their experiences from that turbulent time. The cornerstone of the campaign is the “First Days Story Project,” a partnership with StoryCorps. Forty years after those last days, the First Days Story Project hopes to record the stories of the Vietnamese American and veteran community during their first days in the United States after the war and archive them in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

his episode starts at a moment of optimism: Scientists believe they have cracked the mystery of the malignant cell, and the first targeted therapies have been developed. But very quickly cancer reveals new layers of complexity and a formidable array of defenses. By the second decade of the 2000s, the bewildering complexity of the cancer cell yields to a more ordered picture, revealing new vulnerabilities and avenues of attack.

ZERO ENERGY AMERICA
Zero Energy America is two one-hour documentaries that explore the quest for the zeroenergy home. CARPE DIEM: A FISHY TALE
C
ARPE DIEM: A FISHY TALE is the sensational and true story of the fantastically prolific Asian carp – a scaly habitat-hog that North American scientists are scrambling to repel before it’s too late. Introduced to American fish ponds in the 1970s to clean up algae, this aggressive species eventually made its way into the Mississippi river system. This fascinating documentary takes viewers into the heart of the battle to curtail the ecologically devastating consequences of a carp invasion.

ater runs through Milwaukee’s history like a river. It was water, first of all, that put the city on the map. A good harbor guaranteed prosperity in the Age of Sail, and Milwaukee had the best on the western shore of Lake Michigan. Once settlers arrived, water shaped how they earned a living. Rivers were harnessed to grind flour and saw lumber, and millions of gallons were used to tan leather, cool machinery, and brew the beverage that made Milwaukee famous. But water was just as important for play as for work. The upper Milwaukee River blossomed as a sort of in-town Up North in the late 1800s, lined with canoe clubs, beer gardens, swimming schools, and amusement parks from North Avenue to Capitol Drive. In 1929 Lincoln Memorial Drive debuted as one of the most spectacular stretches of urban shoreline on the Great Lakes. Milwaukee used its water resources, and in time that use crossed the line to abuse. The lower Milwaukee River was reduced to an open sewer by 1900, so choked with filth that engineers proposed covering it with a concrete deck to create “a grand boulevard. Lake Michigan suffered similar indignities. It was used as a garbage dump in the 19th century, and human impacts completely upended its ecosystem in the 20th. Only in recent decades have the currents turned for the better. From the Milwaukee River Greenway to the reborn Menomonee Valley to the cultural theme park on our downtown lakefront, the patterns of the past are being reversed, providing cause for celebration as well as concern. Milwaukee: A City Built on Water tells the full story of our relationship with water in a fast-paced, richly illustrated one-hour documentary. Written and hosted by historian John Gurda, the program was produced by the same team that created the Emmy Award-winning series The Making of Milwaukee. Tune in on April 22nd at 8 p.m. on Channel 10 and again on Channel 36 April 23rd at 9 p.m. for a lively look at our liquid past. SPECIAL PREVIEW SCREENING Join MPTV, John Gurda, and Claudia Looze for a special preview screening on April 7th. Discovery World 500 North Harbor Drive Milwaukee, WI Doors open at 5:30 p.m., Screening at 7p.m. Free and open to the public Seating is limited Parking available at Discovery World

FRONTLINE: MEMORY OF THE CAMPS
A
landmark historical film discovered by FRONTLINE in a museum vault decades ago has been called “Hitchcock’s lost Holocaust film.” First broadcast by the series in 1985, the documentary shows the first horrifying footage shot as Allied troops entered the Nazi death camps. Drawing on initial editing done by famed director Alfred Hitchcock before the film was shelved 70 years ago, FRONTLINE reconstituted the forgotten reels and script and showed them in public for the first time 30 years ago.

KAMIKAZE
A
s America threatened to invade Japan in 1944, the Japanese turned to desperate tactics — kamikaze suicide bombers. Now, experts are uncovering the clues to the terrifying weapons Japan sent into war: killer planes, rocket bombs and super torpedoes, all guided by human pilots. Exploring Japan’s coast, the experts uncover caves, overgrown bunkers and top-secret bases that hide the secrets to how kamikaze weapons were built and launched.

ROYALS AT WAR: 1939-1945
B
y 1939, monarchs no longer rode to war at the head of the army. However, the British royal family continued to occupy important leadership roles for their beleaguered nation, and thus played an important part in World War II. Illustrated by newsreel footage and a substantial collection of photographs, the documentary ROYALS AT WAR takes an in-depth look at how the actions of the royal family helped boost their subjects’ morale and turn the tide of the war.

n May 1970, four students were shot dead at Kent State. The mayhem that followed has been called the most divisive moment in American history since the Civil War. AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: LAST DAYS IN VIETNAM
D
uring the chaotic final days of the Vietnam War, as the North Vietnamese Army closed in on Saigon, the South Vietnamese resistance crumbled. The United States had only a skeleton crew of diplomats and military operatives still in the country. Many Americans on the ground worried their South Vietnamese allies. With the clock ticking and the city under fire, a number of heroic Americans took matters into their own hands, engaging in unsanctioned operations in a desperate effort to save as many South Vietnamese as possible.

NOVA: DAWN OF HUMANITY
N
OVA and National Geographic present exclusive access to an astounding discovery of ancient fossil human ancestors. A special team of experts has brought to light fossils belonging to a crucial gap of our origins that spans the transition between the ape-like australopithecines (such as the famous Lucy) and the earliest members of the human family. At the center of the discovery is paleoanthropologist Lee Berger, whose claims have stirred long controversy in the contentious field of human origins.

EDWARD VIII-THE NAZI KING
P
resident Roosevelt instructed FBI chief J. Edgar Hoover to launch a covert intelligence exercise that had to fool both the exiled royals and the US secret service agents guarding them. The final FBI report, running to 227 pages, reveals that the Duke and Duchess of Windsor harbored pro-Nazi sympathies and that Edward was lined up to go back to the throne as a Nazi puppet if Hitler defeated Britain. It's a tale of treachery, corruption and depravity at the heart of the British monarchy.
