A Creative Collaboration: The Helen Bader Foundation, First Stage, & Milwaukee Public Television

It is said that the arts, such as theater, teach children skills that will be needed in their future workplaces-- flexibility, creativity, the ability to solve problems and communicate, the ability to learn new skills, to be innovative, and to strive for excellence.

MPTV supports local arts groups, such as First Stage, and believes that we are continually enriching our community and cultivating these skills with high quality arts programs. This month, MPTV is giving you a front row seat to a live theatre production, without having to leave your living room sofa. “To The Promised Land” is the third play within First Stage’s 2012-2013 season. Written by Milwaukee-based playwright Jonathan Gillard Daly, “To The Promised Land” was inspired by the history of Daly’s daughter’s grade school, The Golda Meir School in Milwaukee. As part of the Young Performer’s Initiative, “To The Promised Land” tells the story of one young woman’s journey of finding herself through the inspiring autobiography of Golda Meir. “To The Promised Land” shares the story of these two remarkable young women as they struggle to find the meaning of home. With the support of The Helen Bader Foundation, MPTV is bringing this world premiere production to you, completely free of charge. The Helen Bader Foundation believes that strong partnerships – among individuals, organizations, and their communities – are what it takes to create tremendous results. The Helen Bader Foundation strives to be a philanthropic leader in improving the quality of life of the diverse communities in which it works. We are proud of our collaboration with The Helen Bader Foundation and First Stage, teaching life skills through stage skills—together.

After a long hard winter, each of us eagerly awaits the first signs of spring. For some it is the first robin, for others it is the blooms of daffodils and tulips. Still others look forward to opening day at Miller Park. Here at Milwaukee Public Television, spring is not official until the Great TV Auction arrives. There is so much about the nine days Auction is on the air that is truly amazing. Whether it is the thousands of volunteers, the business and individual donors, or you the viewers who help raise over $1,000,000 annually, each element combines to make the Auction special. But what often gets overlooked is that the Great TV Auction is a year-round endeavor. The Auction year starts in the weeks following the nine days on-air. Auction staff and volunteers gather in small groups to discuss what worked and what didn’t this past year. Production staff does the same kind of review. Notes are taken, suggestions made, and problems are solved all while the Auction is fresh in everyone’s mind. While summertime is when Auction staff and volunteers can recharge their batteries, it is hardly time to take it easy. The Auction hosts special events such as wine dinners, the Appraisal Fair, and many more. These events take time, planning and execution. Decisions about the next year’s Auction are also taking place such as; choosing the featured artists, upgrading to the computer system, and the ever present volunteer and donor recruitment. In fact, donors are already being contacted for the Online Holiday Auction in November. Fall brings a quickened pace around the Auction. This is often where future success is made. Auction staff uses every available resource to find potential new donors while cementing long term relationships with people and businesses who have supported us for years. Special events like the Holiday Gift Fair continue, and the Holiday Auction kicks off, bringing in $75,000. Winter is all business at the auction. Donations must be received, identified, and stored. Plans are made for the upcoming event. Are there enough food donations to run the commissary for nine days and serve 3,000 volunteers? Do we have enough merchandise to raise a million dollars? Are our

corporate sponsors able to step up and help out again this year? All these questions plus many more must get answered at this time because soon it will be too late. Spring is a blur at Auction. Staff and volunteers work over time to process thousands of items due to go on-air. Copy must be written for each item. The on-air talent is secured. Production starts setting up, creating on-air spots, taping the items for the Major gift boards and the preview show. This is the time that auction runs at full capacity and it is amazing the energy it generates. Everyone is working with one goal in mind which is to present the best Auction we can to raise the funds necessary for Milwaukee Public Television. Auction week is the bittersweet culmination of a years’ worth of preparation. Both staff and some volunteers put in 9 straight days of 12, 14, sometimes 16 hours of work. Many volunteers take vacation from their day jobs to help lessen the load on others. At the end of nine days, we have a party to thank everyone who made our success possible including volunteers, donors, sponsors, and bidders. We take a deep breath, and look forward to doing it again next year. Please tune in to the 2013 Great TV Auction starting Friday, April 26th, at 5p.m. Thanks

F E AT U R E MPTV PRESENTS FIRST STAGE’S PRODUCTION OF

TO THE PROMISED LAND Airing April 19th at 8p.m. on Channel 10

M ilwaukee, WI – First Stage continues its 26th season with the world premiere of TO THE PROMISED LAND, an original play by Milwaukee actor and playwright Jonathan Gillard Daly. Set in late 1960s Milwaukee, the play seamlessly weaves together the story of Ruth, a young African-American girl reeling from the loss of her brother during recent Civil Rights actions, and that of Golda Meir, Israel’s first female prime minister, who had spent her formative years in Milwaukee. As Ruth draws on Golda Meir’s autobiography for inspiration a story between Milwaukee’s African-American and Jewish communities is shared as we follow both characters on their path to her own promised land. “The play is about the journey of a young person searching for truth while struggling with the tests that come with life in an urban setting,” said Director Sheri Williams Pannell. TO THE PROMISED LAND serves as a catalyst to encourage dialogue about Milwaukee history and witness how one moment in time can impact the life of an impressionable young person,” she continued. TO THE PROMISED LAND marks the second play in First Stage’s Wisconsin Cycle, a new play development effort celebrating the history and people of Wisconsin through a series of plays, associated workshops, special events, and educational initiatives. The broadcast of First Stage Theater’s TO THE PROMISED LAND is part the new Young Performers Initiative (YPI), a partnership of Milwaukee Public Television, Wisconsin Public Television, Wisconsin Public Radio, and Wisconsin School Music Association. The YPI is a statewide initiative to raise the visibility of the arts, celebrate the creative achievements of Wisconsin youth and those who inspire them, and support the arts in education. Having celebrated its 25th anniversary last season, First Stage has grown to become one of the nation’s most acclaimed children’s theaters and the second largest theater company in Milwaukee. Its stage productions, which are great experiences for young people and their families, regularly feature young performers, many who have attended the company’s Theater Academy, the largest theater training program of its kind in the nation. “This was a great opportunity for us to showcase young actors working alongside professionals in an original Wisconsin story performed by one of our state’s leading theater companies,” said MPTV General Manager Ellis Bromberg. TO THE PROMISED LAND is about the wisdom the most famous woman from 4

Milwaukee shares with a young girl growing up decades later in the same neighborhood during troubled times. It’s an inspirational story for all ages.” First Stage Theater’s TO THE PROMISED LAND is the third program broadcast statewide as part of the YPI: THE STATE HONORS CONCERT was shown in February, and FINAL FORTE: WISCONSIN’S YOUNG ARTISTS COMPETE aired in March. The new weekly MPTV series THE ARTS PAGE will also focus on young artists (in February, THE ARTS PAGE featured a segment on animation students in a unique class at Milwaukee Area Technical College). And later this year, THE 2013 UW VARSITY SPRING BAND SHOW will be scheduled. Beyond the broadcasts, the YPI will also connect, inspire, and inform Wisconsin arts educators by providing unique video resources and teaching tools that are specific to state curriculum standards. A web portal will house educational materials that are created, curated, and disseminated using the combined resources of Wisconsin’s public broadcasters and Wisconsin School Music Association. Milwaukee Public Television would like to express our gratitude to The Helen Bader Foundation for helping to fund this important MPTV local production. The Foundation's grant areas are complemented by Arts, as well as Jewish Education, both addressed in TO THE PROMISED LAND. The Helen Bader Foundation works with community partners to support programs that help individuals and their communities reach the fullest potential, and we are proud of this collaborative effort.

FEATURED ARTISTS Arnold Alaniz, of Ellison Bay, Wisconsin, is the auction’s Century Collection Featured Artist. An internationally recognized artist, he credits his experience as the Featured Artist for the 1979 Great TV Auction with changing his career and his life. Within one year of this experience, his artwork was in 1,000 galleries. Within two years 2,400 galleries across the globe! For the 2013 Great TV Auction, Alaniz created “Autumn Twilight.” The painting captures a quiet and peaceful Door County landscape and represents a new direction for the artist who has used stronger, bolder colors, departing from his signature pastel palette. The original, 100 prints and 10 giclees will be offered for bidding. To view more of Alaniz’s work go to: alanizart.com.

Donna Tronca, of Palmyra, Wisconsin is the Featured Artist for the Great TV Auction's Gallery Collection. Art has always been a part of Tronca's life, especially Fiber Arts. Recently, she has created a new body of work entitled “New Life for the Old Bag” based on the principles of “eco art.” Each piece is constructed using recycled and reused materials in ways normally reserved for fabric. The MPTV Auction will feature nine pieces from Tronca, including “Autumn Kimono Robe,” made from nontraditional materials such as fused bubble wrap, cotton batik, upholstery fabrics and hand felted leaves. Tronca’s work can be seen at www.donnatronca.com.

Jeff LaDow of Hales Corners, Wisconsin; is the Featured Artist for the 2013 Great TV Auction's Wisconsin Collection. LaDow was 18 years old when a diving accident rendered him a quadriplegic. Shortly after the accident, he taught himself to paint using his mouth. In 1992, he joined the Mouth and Foot Painters Association (MFPA). Members paint with brushes held in their mouths or feet as a result of a disability sustained at birth or through an accident or illness that prohibits them from using their hands. For the Auction, Jeff LaDow has painted “Italian Village.” The piece depicts an Italian town basking in the glow of a golden sun. There will be 100 prints available for bidding. Printing is donated by Zimmermann Printing. LaDow’s work can be seen at www.mfpausa.com.

George Kovach of Abilene, Texas returns as featured artist for the auction’s National Collection. Known as “one of America’s most versatile artists,” he loves the challenge of painting a wide variety of subjects. For the auction, he has painted, “Spirit of America,” featuring fireworks bursting over the Statue of Liberty in a patriotic display celebrating our freedom and democracy. A signed and limited edition of 100 prints will be auctioned. Printing is donated by Color Ink. To View Kovach’s work visit northwoodscraftsman.com. 12

DEFIANT REQUIEM: VOICES OF RESISTANCE

I

n the face of horrific living conditions, starvation and the threat of deportation to Auschwitz, the Jewish inmates of Terezin concentration camp — artists, musicians, poets and writers — fought back … with art and music. Led by conductor Raphael Schachter, they re-imagined a Catholic liturgical work, Verdi’s Requiem, as a condemnation of the Nazis. Ultimately, they performed for Nazi brass, singing what they dared not say. Six decades later, conductor Murry Sidlin and a new choir take Verdi’s Requiem back to Terezin and bring the story of Raphael Schachter’s artistic uprising back to life. 4/9, 10p.m. 10HD

CALL THE MIDWIFE

R

eturning from her stint at the London Hospital, Jenny needs all her midwifery skill when she and Sister Evangelina assist at the birth of a baby born with spina bifida. The parents struggle to understand and accept their son’s condition. Jenny, who has never delivered a disabled child, struggles to accept the implications the illness could have for the child’s future. Nonnatus House, meanwhile, plays host to an acquaintance of Chummy’s — an eccentric cleric who befriends Jane. 4/21, 7p.m. 10HD

THE LOST BIRD PROJECT

T

HE LOST BIRD PROJECT charts sculptor Todd McGrain's efforts to memorialize five birds — the Great Auk, Carolina Parakeet, Labrador Duck, Passenger Pigeon and Heath Hen — driven to extinction in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The captivating nature documentary follows McGrain and his brother-in-law, Andy, as they embark on a road trip in search of the last-known locations of the birds and seek permission to install McGrain’s six-foot-tall bronze sculptures on those sites. Travelling from the tropical swamps of Florida to the rocky coasts of Newfoundland to the shores of Martha’s Vineyard, the men spend more than two years scouting locations, talking to park rangers, speaking at town meetings and battling bureaucracy in their effort to gather support for the project. An elegy to the five birds, THE LOST BIRD PROJECT is a thoughtful and sometimes humorous look at the artist and his mission. 4/27, 9a.m. 36HD

N ine years ago, Sharon Fischer-Toerpe joined MPTV as an Auction Assistant, working on securing donations of art for the Great TV Auction. Today, Sharon is the Auction Senior Specialist, responsible for directing all aspects of the Auction. Sharon has worked in every aspect of the Auction over the last decade, and she’s enthusiastic about the Auction’s future. Moving forward, Sharon is excited for new developments in the Auction that will allow her to continue her efforts to secure donations for auction items, but also offers her the chance to focus on new opportunities to obtain more bidders. “Over the years, our main focus has been in acquiring donations and this continues to be one of our primary goals. But with the recently introduced component of streaming the Auction live online, we can also focus on acquiring more bidders as well. With this new technology, we can have bidders from around the world shopping our Auction online and calling in.” said Sharon. Although she is excited for the Great TV Auction to evolve with the changing times, Sharon believes that continuity has ensured that MPTV’s Auction is the most successful on-air public television auction in the nation. She credits the commitment of long-term, devoted Auction volunteers, who are like family to Sharon. But Sharon has also been an integral reason the Great TV Auction raises over $1,000,000 a year, and longterm, dedicated staff like Sharon have also ensured the Auction remains a permanent Milwaukee tradition. “My goal as the Auction Senior Specialist is to continue the work of Art Langlas. Art was an amazing teacher, mentor and friend,” said Sharon. “I hope to continue to bring the Auction to the community in the way that Art would have.” Sharon grew up in Milwaukee, watching the Great TV Auction as a child herself. Sharon is married with four children, and the Auction is definitely a family affair. Her family members have worked on the Auction as models, cashiers, on the phone banks, etc., and Sharon counts on her husband and children as her “back-up volunteers”. 23

et in late 1960s Milwaukee, the play seamlessly weaves together the story of Ruth, a young African-American girl reeling from the loss of her brother during recent Civil Rights actions, and that of Golda Meir, Israel’s first female prime minister, who had spent her formative years in Milwaukee. As Ruth draws on Golda Meir’s autobiography for inspiration a story between Milwaukee’s African-American and Jewish communities is shared as we follow both characters on their path to her own promised land. 4/19, 8p.m. 10HD

HE BLETCHLEY CIRCLE follows four ordinary women with the extraordinary ability to break codes, a skill honed during World War II when they worked undercover at Bletchley Park, site of the United Kingdom’s main decryption establishment. Now in 1952, Susan, Millie, Lucy and Jean have returned to civilian life, keeping their intelligence work secret from all, including family and friends. A series of ghastly murders targeting women, however, reunites the team as they set out to decode the pattern behind the crimes.

“O

rchestra of Exiles" is the story of one man's four-year odyssey which culminated, in 1936, with the creation of a top-flight symphony orchestra in the desert outback of Palestine. This extraordinary feat was accomplished by an eccentric moral powerhouse of a man, a Polish Jew named Bronislaw Huberman who was one of the most famous violinists in the world. Huberman's Jewish musicians were among the best players of Europe; they were escaping a world that would soon be torn apart by Nazi aggression. Huberman's selfless efforts ultimately saved 1000 Jews from the Holocaust and changed the landscape of cultural history.

O

n the island to track down the fabled buried treasure of the legendary pirate, Le Clerc, the seemingly harmless group of treasure hunters are shocked when geologist Dr. Ian Parks is brutally killed in the tent of the expedition's leader, Daniel Morgan. With the murder weapon a 300year-old pistol and the entire group classed as suspects, the team have a lot of ground to cover. However, the situation takes an even more sinister turn when Dr Parks’ death triggers a chain of unfortunate and rather coincidental accidents that appear to be targeted at Daniel.
