T
his month Milwaukee PBS would like to recognize The Jerome J. & Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation for its long-time underwriting support of Milwaukee PBS. For many years, they have sponsored children’s programs like Clifford the Big Red Dog and Arthur. They are currently sponsors of Antiques Roadshow two days a week and all airings of The Lawrence Welk Show. Antiques Roadshow airs on Monday nights at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., Fridays at 11 p.m. on Channel 10, and Saturdays at 6 p.m. on Channel 36. The Lawrence Welk Show; reprises of the popular television show that originally aired from 1955 through 1982, is broadcast on Milwaukee PBS Saturday evenings at 6:00 p.m. on Channel 10 and repeats Sunday afternoons at 3:00 p.m. on Channel 10. The Jerome J. & Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation was established by Jerry and Dorothy Holz in 1996. Jerry’s dad opened Holz Motors in 1914 in Hales Corners, and Jerry growing up in an apartment over the family’s dealership downstairs, grew up immersed in every aspect of the auto business. Holz Motors has received numerous awards over the years, including Dealer of the Year Award from 2002-2008, and 2010, and the GMAC Champion of Life Award. Jerry Holz and his late wife Dorothy have valued giving back to Hales Corners and the Greater Milwaukee community, and their foundation has been a proud underwriter of Milwaukee PBS programming for many years. According to Barb Weis, daughter of Jerry and Dorothy Holz, “The Jerome and Dorothy Holz Family Foundation is pleased to be an underwriting sponsor of Milwaukee PBS's Antiques Roadshow and The Lawrence Welk Show. These wonderful programs enhance the viewing experience for Milwaukee PBS viewers. Antiques Roadshow is so appealing because it highlights the stories and history behind treasured family heirlooms and yard sale finds. My parents had a particular fondness for The Lawrence Welk Show, as they loved to waltz and polka. I recall many happy moments as a child when our family gathered round the television set to watch The Lawrence Welk Show.” Milwaukee PBS is thankful for the underwriting support and commitment of the Jerome J. and Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation. Maureen Bradley, Director, Corporate Development and Underwriting bradley1@matc.edu or (414) 297-8008

ast month 10thirtysix, Milwaukee PBS' signature news magazine, broadcast a live one hour edition that focused on the effects of lead on our health. 10thirtysix host Portia Young was joined by Milwaukee PBS producers and reporters Joanne Williams and Mark Siegrist, Journal Sentinel Columnist James Causey and WUWM’s Susan Bence, along with experts from Children’s Hospital, Aurora Health Care and Sixteenth Street Community Health Center. openly about their fears of being arrested and deported. 10thirtysix also takes a look at the creation of a mural that will be installed on a wall of the Butters Fetting building on Mitchell and 1st Street. The mural, which will be about 60 feet long, traces the history of the Latino community in Milwaukee beginning with the migrant farm worker movement. The mural was researched and painted by college and high school students under the supervision of UWM Art Professor Raoul Deal. We talk with Deal, students and even one of the subjects of the mural.
On the upcoming April 21 edition of 10thirtysix, the program takes an in depth look at immigration. ¡Adelante! producer and host Patricia Gomez spent several days with an undocumented local family whose four children are American citizens. In the 10thirtysix segment, the family members speak

THE GREAT WAR Premieres April 10th, at 8p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10 Six-Hour Documentary Explores How World War I Forever Changed America and the World
T
he Great War, a six-hour, three-night event, will premiere in April 10th, at 8p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10 in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into the war on April 6, 1917. “The Great War” is executive produced by Mark Samels and directed by award-winning filmmakers Stephen Ives, Amanda Pollak and Rob Rapley. Drawing on the latest scholarship, including unpublished diaries, memoirs and letters, “The Great War” tells the rich and complex story of World War I through the voices of nurses, journalists, aviators and the American troops who came to be known as “doughboys.” The series explores the experiences of AfricanAmerican and Latino soldiers, suffragists, Native-American “code talkers” and others whose participation in the war to “make the world safe for democracy” has been largely forgotten. “The Great War” also explores how a brilliant PR man bolstered support for the war in a country hesitant to put lives on the line for a foreign conflict; how President Woodrow Wilson steered the nation through three-and-a-half years of neutrality, only to reluctantly lead America into the bloodiest conflict the world had ever seen, thereby transforming the United States into a dominant player on the international stage; and how the ardent patriotism and determination to support America’s crusade for liberty abroad led to one of the most oppressive crackdowns on civil liberties at home in American history. It is also a story of little-known heroism and sacrifice (including the deadliest battle in American
4
history) that would leave more than 53,000 men dead on the battlefield and more than 60,000 dead from disease. American fatalities would come at a critical time in the war, but they would be dwarfed by a cataclysm of violence that would ultimately claim 15 million lives. “On this centennial anniversary, we’re proud to present this indepth examination of a truly pivotal event in American history from the perspectives of the people who lived through it,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming, PBS. “The Great War transformed America and the world, and this series brings that transformation to life through unexpected personal stories.” “There’s one America before the Great War, and another America after,” said AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Executive Producer Mark Samels. “The war marked the first time that the U.S. stepped onto the world stage and became the pre-eminent world power of the 20th century. It changed not only our role in the world but changed us at home. It was a time of stark choices — between pacifism and building up our military, between equal rights for everyone or for only a few. What unfolded was not only extremely important politically, socially and culturally, it was also incredibly dramatic. By examining the war through the lives of individuals — some famous, most forgotten — we hope to have created a film that does justice to this incredibly rich story.”

On the Local Scene April brings us a chance to trick our friends on April Fool’s Day, showers that in a month will turn into flowers, and the dreaded tax day. Don’t worry, Milwaukee PBS has plenty of great programming to get you through this transition month. Around the Corner with John McGivern last episode of season six features Wisconsin Rapids. While this kind, warm town is heavy with history, there are loads of current things to experience, and literally tons of cranberries to be harvested! That’s why we went. Wisconsin is the largest producer of cranberries in the world, and John had never been in a bog – ever!

AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN: WISCONSIN RAPIDS
S
mack dab in the middle of the state, we found Wisconsin Rapids. True, it’s not hard to find, but it is hard to leave! Wisconsin Rapids is a paper making town, and has been almost 200 years. While this kind, warm town is heavy with history, there are loads of current things to experience, and literally tons of cranberries to be harvested! That’s why we came.

Sixth Season of
CALL THE MIDWIFE
Premieres Sunday, April 2, at 7p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10 - Neal Street Productions’ Smash British Series Continues to be a Hit Among PBS Fans –
T
he critically acclaimed British drama CALL THE MIDWIFE returns to PBS for a sixth season April 2May 21, 7:00-8:00 p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10. Season 6 begins in 1962 and it is evident how times are changing, from increased liberation for women to the shadow of infamous gangsters to the introduction of new government policies. In Poplar, when the rather austere Sister Ursula is appointed the new head of Nonnatus House, Sister Julienne finds herself demoted and working alongside the midwives as an ordinary member of the staff. She is not the only one to face challenges closer to home. As they strive to help mothers and families cope with the demands of childbearing, disability, disease and social prejudice, the beloved medics must make choices — and fight battles — of their own.
“CALL THE MIDWIFE continues to entertain viewers in both the UK and the US with exciting storylines and engrossing characters,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming, PBS. “We look forward to continuing our relationship with our BBC and Neal Street partners as we embark on a sixth season together.” “We are delighted to be bringing series 6 of Call the Midwife to our many loyal fans in America,” said Dame Pippa Harris, executive producer for Neal Street Productions. “Once again, Heidi Thomas’s scripts shine with passion and compassion and see our medics tirelessly supporting their patients in the turbulent, exciting years of the early 1960s.”
In Season 6, the midwives laugh together, cry together and support each other as never before, while continuing to address complex medical and personal dilemmas on their midwifery and district nursing rounds.
