T
his month, MPTV would like to recognize The Jerome J. & Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation for its generous underwriting support of MPTV’s television programming. For many years they have sponsored our children’s literacy programming, from Clifford the Big Red Dog to Arthur. Last year they also chose to underwrite the Lawrence Welk Show. Jerry and Dorothy Holz established the Jerome J. & Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation in 1996. Jerry’s dad opened Holz Motors in 1914 in Hales Corners, and Jerry, growing up in an apartment over the family’s dealership, grew up immersed in every aspect of the auto business. Holz Motors received numerous awards over the years, including Dealer of the Year Award from 2002-2008, and 2010, and the GMAC Champion of Life Award. Jerry Holz and his late wife Dorothy have valued giving back to Hales Corners and the Greater Milwaukee community, and their foundation has been a proud underwriter of MPTV programming. According to Barb Weis, daughter of Jerry and Dorothy Holz, “The Jerome and Dorothy Holz Family Foundation is pleased to be an underwriting sponsor of MPTV’s quality children’s program Arthur and our perennial favorite, the Lawrence Welk Show. An important part of the Holz Family Foundation’s mission is to support the positive development of all children, and programs like Arthur enhance that development. I recall many happy moments as a child when our family and grandparents gathered round the television set to watch the Lawrence Welk Show. We hope it will bring back enjoyable memories of the era’s music with other viewers and their families.” MPTV is thankful for the underwriting support and commitment of the Jerome J. and Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation. Their underwriting support helps make it possible for MPTV to continue to offer these fine programs to our southeastern Wisconsin viewing audience. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV, please contact Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu, or (414) 297-8008.

“ y husband & I enjoy sooo many of your programs. Thank you for quality, respectful & quality shows! ” – Katherine, Racine
We received this note in the offices just the other day, and we hope that you are in agreement with Katherine’s thoughts. Among all of the benefits to support MPTV, programs remain number one. And, your support truly does help in the creation and broadcast of programming each and every day. This month, you’ll see how we’ve put your generous support to work with an immense variety of productions. All summer, our production teams have been putting the final touches on brand new offerings Diamonds in the Rough, hosted by Mark Siegrist, and 3 Black Nouveau specials: Trippin, Tribute to the Negro Leagues and Million Moms March. More information about these programs can be found throughout this month’s Fine Tuning. Nationally, public television stations will be debuting exciting new programs including The Mystery of Matter: Search for the Elements, a 3-part series exploring the long, continuing quest to understand what the world is made of. Great Performances brings us the Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert 2015 on August 28th. And, Big Blue Live ends the month and takes us into September with a live 3 night experience capturing the annual convening of some of the world’s charismatic marine creatures in California’s Monterey Bay.
In the middle of the month, viewers like you will have the opportunity to become station supporters during our late summer fundraising campaign. We are proud to bring special presentations of Simon and Garfunkel: The Concert in Central Park, Glen Campbell: Good Times Again, America’s Test Kitchen, Midsomer Murders and the miniseries The Making of Milwaukee. So, keep the comments coming! We always want to learn more about the programs you enjoy. Reach out to our Viewer Services team at 414-297-7520, our Membership team at 424-297-8020 or email us at mptvsupport@matc.edu. As always, thank you for investing in Milwaukee Public Television.

P.S. You may have noticed that in spite of last month's announcement in Fine Tuning, Ellis is still the general manager of MPTV. Ellis has agreed to delay his retirement for awhile as Milwaukee Area Technical College, the licensee of our stations, continues its search to find his successor. 3

Simon & Garfunkel The Concert in Central Park Premieres August 8th at 9 p.m. on Channel 10
– The Iconic Duo in One of Their Most Memorable Performances – Their original sound, influenced by the harmonies of the Everly Brothers and the rhythms and poetic swing of Chuck Berry, made a quantum leap during the Greenwich Village folk music scene of the early 1960s. Paul Simon’s songwriting developed along provocative and topical lines in 1964, when the pair recorded Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., their first album as Simon & Garfunkel and the first for Columbia Records.
O
n September 19th, 1981, Simon & Garfunkel reunited for a free public concert on the Great Lawn of New York City’s Central Park, raising awareness and funding to help restore the world’s most famous urban park. The duo had rarely performed since their breakup in 1970, but their music continued to resonate with the city from which they came. This unforgettable performance, which drew one of the largest audiences ever assembled for a single concert, features all of Simon & Garfunkel’s greatest hits as well as selections from their solo catalogs, newly arranged with an expanded 11-man band. SIMON & GARFUNKEL: THE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK is part of special programming premiering on Channel 10 this month. Simon & Garfunkel, quintessential New Yorkers, embodied the spirit of the city, the times and generations of music lovers. “They stayed around the city, continuing to assimilate its cultural resources, recycle them and give them back,” Stephen Holden wrote in his review of the concert for Rolling Stone. With more than 500,000 people in attendance, THE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK was Simon & Garfunkel’s biggest gift to their hometown. Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, both born in 1941, grew up three blocks away from each other in Kew Garden Hills, Queens, New York, and met in grade school in 1953 when they were both cast in the same school play. Simon, a guitarist and aspiring songwriter, and Garfunkel, an extraordinary singer with a pure tenor range and uncanny intonation, began performing together as Tom and Jerry in the mid-1950s, releasing their first professional recording in 1957.
4
Though their debut reached only a small audience when first released, one of the tracks, “The Sound of Silence,” a haunting acoustic recording illuminated by the signature solo and harmony vocal blends S&G invented and perfected, had been overdubbed with electric instruments and released to radio, unbeknownst to either Simon or Garfunkel. The electrified version of “The Sound of Silence” became a massive hit, one of the archetypal anthems of an emerging folk-rock movement. Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. was re-released in January 1966, alongside Simon & Garfunkel’s second studio album, Sounds of Silence, which included the electric hit single version of the song. “The Sound of Silence” launched a long unbroken chain of hits and album successes for Simon & Garfunkel, including “I Am a Rock,” “Mrs. Robinson,” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water” from their fifth and final studio album of the same title. Going out on the high note of Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon & Garfunkel broke up their musical partnership to pursue individual musical, artistic and personal directions. SIMON & GARFUNKEL: THE CONCERT IN CENTRAL PARK features these performances: • “Mrs. Robinson” • “Homeward Bound” • “America” • “Me and Julio” • “April Come She Will” • “American Tune” • “A Heart In New York” • “Bridge Over Troubled Water” • “Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover” • “The Boxer” • “Old Friends” • “59th St. Bridge Song (Feelin’ Groovy)” • “The Sound of Silence” • “Late In The Evening”

A
s the leaves were turning outside James Beckum’s little league office at 9th & Brown, we talked about good coaching. Mr. Beckum, a standout player for the East St. Louis Giants of the historic Negro Leagues believes strongly in maintaining the dignity of his young players. A good coach doesn’t yell at players during games for mistakes. Just a few days later Felix Mantilla echoed that same sensitivity during our chat in his Milwaukee living room. The former Milwaukee Brave expressed the need for coaches to treat young players as individuals.
The Beckum – Stapleton Little League dates back to 1965. 1973 was the founding year for the Felix Mantilla Little League. Over the course of time, thousands of Milwaukee kids have been nurtured on their diamonds; Gaining confidence, a cooperative spirit, self-discipline, learning skills, and a greater curiosity for the world around them.
James Beckum and Felix Mantilla are craftsmen of an American pastime, and keepers of a tradition. The social impact of their little leagues is immeasurable. Their brand of baseball far exceeds the fundamentals of the game. It’s all about building personal skills for the future by nurturing, Milwaukee’s Diamonds in the Rough.
Milwaukee’s Diamonds in the Rough premieres on August 6th on Channel 10HD at 7p.m. and repeats on August 23rd at 11:30p.m. on Channel 36HD. 10
Unforgettable characters, exciting plots, and expressive illustrations await you on this year’s MPTV PBS KIDS Writers 2015 Contest Winning Stories broadcast. You’ll meet a very hot camel, a young man who saves his parents, a wildflower girl with special powers and a girl with a very wiggly tooth. Sixteen winning stories come to life during the half-hour program which features the work of area children in Kindergarten through Third Grade.

he JN4 “JENNY” aeroplane became the first mass produced aerial trainer, the first to carry the U.S. Mail, the first to introduce America to the sky through its colorful barnstorming story, and the plane that taught such greats as Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart to fly. A combination of stunning HD aerial footage, historic newsreels and photographs, interviews with aviation experts and more bring the long-lost story of the JENNY to life.
