his month MPTV would like to recognize the Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation. They support patriotic programming on MPTV, including The National Memorial Day Concert, A Capitol Fourth, and others. The Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation also underwrites the PBS award-winning series, American Experience, television’s longest-running, most watched history series. The awardwinning program celebrates the people and events in our nation’s past that have shaped our nation’s identity and heritage. As we are in the midst of the presidential campaign of 2016, American Experience will air programs this month on pivotal presidents of the last 50 years, including John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George H.W. Bush. Kennedy’s presidency is featured in a two-part series on Monday, August 8th, and Tuesday, August 9th at 8 p.m. An evening on both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, “A Time for Greatness” airs at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9th. Lyndon Baines Johnson’s presidency is featured in a two-part series Wednesday the 10th, from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m., while Richard Nixon’s terms as president are examined on Thursday, 8/11, at 7 p.m. Jimmy Carter’s presidency airs on Monday the 15th at 8 p.m., while Ronald Reagan’s life and presidency are featured on two nights, Tuesday and Wednesday, August 16th and 17th at 8 p.m. The presidency of our 41st president, George H.W. Bush, is featured Thursday, August 18th, at 7 p.m. For over five decades, Michels Corporation has been a pioneer in innovative new technologies. Starting as a small pipeline contractor in 1959 and becoming one of the largest utility contractors in North America. Michels offers construction, engineering, and procurement services to keep pace with the growing demand in the energy, transportation, telecommunications and utility construction industries. “My family and I are pleased to underwrite programming that focuses on patriotism and the history of our country,” said Ruth L. Michels, CEO of Michels Corporation. “We join Milwaukee Public Television viewers in appreciating programs on these important and inspiring subjects, and are proud to help make them available to everyone." The generous underwriting support of the Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation ensures that patriotic programming and American Experience continue to be shown on Milwaukee Public Television. MPTV is most appreciative of their underwriting support, enabling MPTV viewers the opportunity to enjoy these outstanding programs. -Maureen Bradley, Director, Corporate Development and Underwriting.

ne of America’s most famous Mexican chefs also happens to be one of MPTV’s most popular cooking show hosts. Pati Jinich is the star of Pati’s Mexican Table and has been nominated twice for the prestigious James Beard award. Raised in a middle class MexicanJewish family, Pati admits she was influenced by food which was a constant in her family’s home. She jokes about being raised in a family of accomplished cooks and ‘food maniacs’. Pati, her husband and children wound up in our nation’s capital and Pati embarked on a career in politics. But in her non-work hours, she continued her passion for cooking at home and for others. In a decision that set her on her way, Pati left a high profile job in an important Washington, D.C. think tank and shifted from politics to her first love: food. The rest is culinary history. In September look for the 5th season of Pati’s Mexican Table on Channels 10, 36 and also Create. And there's more. You can meet Pati Jinich when she wends her way to Milwaukee the last week of August. We’re delighted to announce that Pati will be one of the featured stars of this year’s Mexican Fiesta weekend. She’ll be at the festival Friday, August 26th between 5:00p.m and 7:00p.m. - and on Saturday, look for her at the MPTV booth in the afternoon between 3:30p.m. and 5:00p.m. Pati will be autographing her new cookbook “Mexican Today”, and we’ll be offering the book as a thank you gift when Pati comes to the MPTV studio for live pledge on Saturday morning August 27th. She’s really one of a kind and we’re honored to have her join us for two days.

In other programming news, MPTV recently ended production on two long-running local series. InterChange, hosted by Dan Jones, and I Remember, hosted by Jim Peck. We applaud Dan Jones and Jim Peck for their many years of on-air contributions. Look for I Remember specials in the future on MPTV. Dan will continue his contributions to local programming on MPTV as one of the producers of a new untitled news-magazine show that will premiere in November. The new program will draw on the many talented behind the scenes producers at that station as well as its outstanding on-air hosts: Sandy Maxx, Patricia Gomez, John McGivern, Dan Small, and Joanne Williams. Additionally, the format of MPTV’s upcoming program will allow us to partner with a number of substantial journalists and content providers. The title and airdate are being finalized as this issue goes to press and we promise to share more exciting news with you soon. I'm open to your comments and ideas. Feel free to email me at mptvgm@matc.edu.

n his first two PBS specials, A Farm Story with Jerry Apps and A Farm Winter with Jerry Apps, the popular Midwestern author and historian explored his childhood from the Great Depression to World War II through personal memories and photos from the Wild Rose community. In THE LAND WITH JERRY APPS, he reaches forward, looking ahead by sharing his passion for the land, conservation, and local farming. In chapters that follow the seasons, Apps takes viewers on a walk in the woods with his grandsons, passing along lessons that can be gleaned from listening to the land. With a wit and wisdom inherited from his father on their Midwestern farm, Apps recalls stories that unite the generations by informing a shared appreciation for the world around us. Born and raised on a Wisconsin farm, Jerry Apps is

On the Local Scene It’s the last gasp of summer. Time to visit the final festivals, the state fair, and check out what’s on MPTV. Outdoor Wisconsin’s Deb Wolniak welcomes a special guest who looks at issues facing honeybees and beekeepers and Dan Small heads out on Lake Michigan with Dumper Dan Charters of Sheboygan to reel in some trout and salmon. The Arts Page gets up close to sculpture, especially a new work by Wisconsin environmental artist Roy Staab at the Villa Terrace Decorative Arts Museum’s Renaissance Garden, and goes behindthe-scenes in the creation of an award-winning Downton Abbey float for the Rose Parade. ¡Adelante! visits the "Streets of Old Milwaukee" at the Milwaukee Public Museum as the exhibit celebrates its 50th anniversary. Dr. Eric Gallien, the Deputy Superintendent for the Racine School District, talks to ¡Adelante! about how parents can get access to school-provided services for their children. Around the Corner with John McGivern visits Shorewood and Waupaca Chain of Lakes. And if you are out and about look for John and the crew in Eagle River, Horicon, and Milwaukee’s Garden District in August as they shoot Season 6. Black Nouveau examines the history of voter rights in America with historians Kenneth O'Reilly, Ph.D., MATC and Robert Smith, Ph.D., UWM, and looks at what some consider current efforts at voter suppression. Black Nouveau also explores the Wisconsin Black Historical Society and Museum one of the largest sources of visual history of Milwaukee's African-American community. Freedom Walkers for Milwaukee: traces Milwaukee's most turbulent events during the Civil Rights struggle of the mid 1900's. Using archival footage, photographs, and interviews with Milwaukeeans, the film sheds light on the fight for equal employment, open housing, and equitable educational opportunities, and reveals how Milwaukee earned the nickname, "The Selma of the North". Tracks Ahead visits the German state of Saxony to see a narrow gauge steam line and stops for a concert on top of Colorado's LaVeta pass. MPTV PBS KIDS Writers Contest Winners 2016 – The winners of the 2016 contest’s stories come alive in this special program that features 17 children from southeastern Wisconsin, ages kindergarten through third grade who were recognized in this year’s contest. The Boys of ’36 Premieres Tuesday, August 2, 8:00 p.m. on Channel 10 Inspired by Daniel James Brown’s #1 New York Times Bestseller “The Boys in the Boat”, Documentary Recounts the Thrilling Underdog Story of the American Rowing Team at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Broadcast Coincides with 2016 Olympic Games

I

nspired by Daniel James Brown’s critically acclaimed nonfiction book “The Boys in the Boat”: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE The Boys of ’36 is the thrilling story of the American Olympic rowing team that triumphed against all odds in Nazi Germany.

In 1936, the UW offered no scholarships for rowing, but did assist the athletes in finding part-time employment. Even with jobs, several found it hard to make ends meet; some even joined the team because they knew they knew they would be fed regular meals.

The Boys of ‘36 explores how nine working-class young men from the University of Washington took the rowing world and the nation by storm when they captured the gold medal at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. These sons of loggers, shipyard workers and farmers overcame tremendous hardships — psychological, physical and economic — to beat not only the Ivy League teams of the East Coast but Adolf Hitler’s elite German rowers. Their unexpected victory, and the obstacles they overcame to achieve it, gave hope to a nation struggling to emerge from the depths of the Depression.

Bobby Moch ( June 20, 1914 – January 18, 2005), just five-footseven and 119 pounds, was the team’s coxswain. Born and raised in Montesano, Washington, Moch graduated from the UW and signed on as an assistant crew coach for the 1936-37 season. He entered law school and was offered the head coaching position at MIT in 1940. Moch transferred to Harvard Law School and continued to coach. He would go on to a successful legal career, eventually arguing and winning a case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Featuring interviews with author Daniel James Brown, historians and surviving children of the 1936 Washington team, The Boys of ’36 premieres on AMERICAN EXPERIENCE in August on PBS in conjunction with the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro and the 80th anniversary of the miracle crew’s triumph. “The Boys of ’36 is really an inspiring story,” said Mark Samels, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Executive Producer. “These remarkable young men — with nothing more than strength of character, hard work and determination — triumphed over unimaginable odds. We’re proud to bring this story, so vividly recounted in Brown’s bestseller, to our audience.” The broadcast of The Boys of ’36 will be accompanied by a series of screening events across the country, many in partnership with USRowing, a nonprofit membership organization recognized by the United States Olympic Committee as the national governing body for the sport of rowing in the United States. 10

The Team

Don Hume ( July 25, 1915 – September 16, 2001) set the pace as stroke oar for the team in the #8 seat. As a boy, Hume had worked in a pulp mill and fumes had damaged his lungs, making him susceptible to respiratory illnesses. He spent the war years serving in the merchant marines. Following the war, he built a career in oil and gas exploration and later became president of the West Coast Mining Association. Joe Rantz (March 31, 1914 – September 10, 2007), #7 seat. Born in Spokane, Joe was four when his mother died and he was sent east to live with an aunt. He eventually returned to his father and new stepmother but when troubles arose, the family moved away and left the teenager to fend for himself. He eventually moved to Seattle to live with his older brother, and in high school was recruited by coach Al Ulbrickson. Rantz graduated from the UW in 1939 with a degree in chemical engineering. He went to work for Boeing in 1941 and later retired from the company.

George “Shorty” Hunt (August 1, 1916 – September 3, 1999), #6 seat and a standout high school athlete, became a Seabee in the South Pacific during World War II and cofounded a construction company following the war. Jim “Stub” McMillin (March 8, 1914 – August 22, 2005), #5 seat, worked nights as a janitor to make ends meet while at the UW. After college, he took over Bobby Moch’s job at MIT, where he both coached and worked on classified research as a lab engineer for 12 years. He later returned to Seattle and worked for Boeing. John White (May 16, 1916 – March 16, 1997), #4 seat, graduated from the UW in 1938 with a degree in metallurgical engineering. He followed his father into the steel business and worked for Bethlehem Steel. Gordon Adam (May 26, 1915 – March 27, 1992), #3 seat. Adam worked on a salmon boat while at the UW. He ran out of money before he could graduate and took a part-time night job with Boeing in his senior year. He remained there for the next 38 years. Charles “Chuck” Ward Day (October 19, 1914 – May 1962), #2 seat. Born in Colville, Washington, Day earned his medical degree and entered the Navy at the outbreak of the war. After serving as a naval doctor in the South Pacific, he returned to Seattle and established a successful practice.

Roger Morris ( July 16, 1915 – July 22, 2009) was the Bowman (#1 seat) on the team. While at the UW, Morris worked for his father on the weekends, moving families out of homes they had lost to the Depression. He graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering and spent the war doing military construction in the San Francisco Bay Area. He then returned to Seattle to work for the Manson Construction Company. The Coach and Mentor Al (Alvin) Ulbrickson (1903 – 1980) became head coach of the UW’s crew team in 1927. Under his leadership, the Huskies went to the Olympics three times. His varsity crews won six IRA titles; his junior varsity won ten. He was inducted into the National Rowing Hall of Fame in 1956. George Yeoman Pocock (March 23, 1891 – March 19, 1976). A native of England, Pocock was a leading designer and builder of racing shells. Pocock-built shells began to win U.S. Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships in 1923, and he was appointed Boatman to U.S. Olympic Rowing Teams in 1936, 1948, 1952 and 1956. A mentor to many of the day’s rowing coaches, Pocock was named "Sports Star of the Year" for 1948 by the Seattle PostIntelligencer and was inducted into the Helms Rowing Hall of Fame in 1969.
