The Reiman Foundation Discovering Wisconsin’s Communities: The Reiman Foundation and “Around the Corner with John McGivern” on Milwaukee Public Television Each week, MPTV viewers enjoy “Around the Corner with John McGivern,” thanks to the generous support of the Reiman Foundation. Reiman Publications was founded by Roy Reiman in the basement of his Hales Corners, Wisconsin, home. Soon after, Reiman relocated his publishing company to Greendale, Wisconsin. Reiman Publications launched 14 national magazines—Country, Taste of Home, Reminisce, etc.—unique in that none of them accepted advertising. All of them were supported solely by subscriptions. In 1996 the Reimans made a substantial investment in Greendale with the revitalization of the Greendale Village Center, also known as Historic Downtown Greendale. By 2004, when the company was sold, the magazines had more than 16 million subscribers, with at least one subscriber in every eighth home in America. As one reader said of the Reiman magazines, reading them “is like visiting with people across the country for relaxing conversations among friends.” That’s what Emmy award-winning actor John McGivern does each week as he takes viewers on a unique field trip through Wisconsin’s diverse towns and neighborhoods. Along the way, McGivern discovers the secrets to living well, working hard, and playing merrily in hometowns across the state of Wisconsin. From Greendale to Sheboygan and Racine, Mineral Point to Lake Geneva and Burlington to Brady Street, McGivern talks to artisans, shopkeepers, & local people as they share what makes their community home. Along the way, he bumps into local historian John Gurda who shares fascinating historical gems about the community’s town settlers, buildings, parks, and neighborhoods. MPTV is proud to produce this enjoyable and informative program about the unique communities that make Wisconsin home. The Reiman Foundation’s generous gift has underwritten Seasons 2 and 3 of the MPTV location production of Around the Corner with John McGivern. Season 3 will begin airing in January, 2014. MPTV is proud of this collaboration with the Reiman Foundation because we share similar goals – to increase viewers’ awareness of the unique qualities of their respective town or community to promote economic development and to contribute to a sense of local community. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV. Contact Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu or (414) 297-8008.

MPTV V-ME, WORLD & CREATE LISTINGS

18 & 19

The PBS Annual Meeting is a gathering of station officials for screening and discussing upcoming national programming. This year, PBS invited us to bring along an active non-staff station supporter to the meeting, and MPTV member Amy Biller Daniels joined us. Here she shares some of her impressions from the meeting... I am an MPTV groupie! I’m also a MASTERPIECE/ MYSTERY groupie! My TV is always on either MPTV 10 or MPTV 36. I became hooked on the station, PBS and MASTERPIECE THEATRE when I watched THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII way back in 1970, and I have been watching ever since. This past May, I was fortunate to attend the PBS Annual Meeting in Miami. It was a gathering of station general managers, other station personnel, board members and supporters. I felt right at home! Everyone was very welcoming and friendly. I’ve enjoyed British dramas and mysteries almost more than anything else on PBS. As you can imagine, I'm a great fan of DOWNTON ABBEY so the highlight of the annual meeting for me was meeting Rebecca Eaton, executive producer of MASTERPIECE. She is as intelligent, witty and as gracious in person as she is on TV. I’m happy to be able to share the “inside scoop” of the fall season on PBS. Of course, we DOWNTON ABBEY aficionados are looking forward to Season 4 which starts January 5, 2014. I'm also excited about new episodes of CALL THE MIDWIFE and a new series called LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX starring Anne Reid and Derek Jacobi. While at the meeting, I learned that Wednesday evenings are "the smartest night on television" as NOVA and other science programs are on then! NOVA has an exciting season planned with programs about asteroids; the aftermath of mega storm

16-17

Sandy; and MAKING STUFF, a mini-series with New York Times columnist David Pogue on the impact of technology in our lives. ESPN's Outside the Line and FRONTLINE have joined together to produce a program exploring the ongoing issue of concussions in the NFL. It will be interesting and thought provoking and I’m sure well done. PBS’s children’s programming is very exciting. A new series, PEG + CAT, will be seen in the fall. It will present math is a new, fun and exciting way. (I’m sorry they didn’t have this series when I was growing up!) It will join the wonderful existing children’s programs including SESAME STREET, THOMAS & FRIENDS, and WORD GIRL. There will be a new adult on SESAME STREET, Armando, who sings, dances and can speak Spanish! This fall, we’ll be seeing productions about JFK as it will be the 50th anniversary of his assassination. Other documentaries will focus on Latino Americans, the real science in Sherlock Holmes, and Stephen Hawking. GREAT PERFORMANCES has a great season in store for us. Hugh Jackman will lead the cast of “Oklahoma!” The Milwaukee Ballet’s production of PETER PAN will also be on PBS. I’m so glad that one of our cultural gems will get nationwide notice! I know that all of you will find many wonderful programs to watch this fall. I hope, too, that you will continue to support MPTV, our wonderful PBS station which keeps us entertained, informed and amazed! 3

F E AT U R E PBS COMMEMORATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF HISTORIC MARCH ON WASHINGTON – Highlights Include Premiere of New Documentary THE MARCH, the Debut of Provocative Web Series The March @50, and Memories of the March, Video Interviews with Original Participants and More –

P

BS announced a special week of programs and online events and activities celebrating the 50th anniversary of the historic 1963 March on Washington, a watershed moment in the Civil Rights Movement that helped usher in sweeping civil rights legislation and a sea change in public opinion. In addition to the premiere of THE MARCH, a new documentary about the dramatic stories behind the event, the PBS Black Culture Connection website will debut The March @50, a provocative five-part web series exploring whether America has delivered on the promises of the March. Memories of the March, a series of video vignettes created by PBS member stations, explores additional compelling local stories of the March, providing a variety of perspectives on this historic event and its ongoing legacy. “PBS is offering many different ways to engage with the meaning and legacy of the March through this multi-faceted initiative,” said Beth Hoppe, PBS Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming. “These programs provide a deeper understanding of our history, preserve testimony from those who were there, and offer a chance to take stock of whether progress has been made on the goals of the original Marchers.” THE MARCH premieres on Tuesday, August 27, on Channel 10 at 9p.m., the eve of the 50th anniversary of the original event. The film reveals the dramatic story behind the event through the remembrances of key players such as Jack O’Dell, Clarence B. Jones, Julian Bond and Andrew Young. Supporters and other testimonials of the March include Harry Belafonte, Diahann Carroll, Roger Mudd, Peter Yarrow and Oprah Winfrey in addition to historians, journalists, authors and ordinary citizens who joined some 250,000 Americans who thronged to the capital on that momentous day to peacefully demand an end to two centuries of discrimination and injustice. THE MARCH is a Smoking Dogs Films Production produced by Lina Gopaul and David Lawson and directed by John Akomfrah. Executive Producers are Krysanne Katsoolis, Cactus Three, and Robert Redford and Laura Michalchyshyn, Sundance Productions. 4

Sam Pollard is Consulting Producer, with Gina Belafonte as Associate Producer. In addition to the U.S. premiere on PBS, THE MARCH will be screened by international broadcast co-producers the BBC and France 3. PBS Black Culture Connection will unveil The March @50, a new web series by filmmaker Shukree Hassan Tilghman (More Than a Month) as part of the PBS celebration of the March on Washington Anniversary. With a new episode debuting each week for five weeks, The March @50 asks if America has delivered on the original demands of the marchers for jobs and freedom. Each episode will explore the March’s legacy through the lens of contemporary issues ranging from minority incarceration, disproportionate minority unemployment, the re-emergence of public school segregation and voting rights. The 1963 March on Washington was created by community activists and dedicated people from every state in the country. Memories of the March, a series of video vignettes created by PBS member stations from across the nation, will also debut on PBS Black

For Jobs and Freedom: 50 Years And Counting Culture Connection. Fascinating first-person stories of original participants who made the trek to the nation’s capital are included, as well as others who were instrumental in working for the cause in their communities. Vignettes include interviews with several women, including Johnnie Turner, a Memphis college student when she attended the March and now a Tennessee State Representative; Dorothy Foreman Cotton, the highest-ranking woman in the Southern Christian Leadership Conference during most of the 1960s; and Georgia Davis Powers, the grandniece of a slave who helped organize the 1964 March on Kentucky’s State Capitol, an event in which Dr. King also participated along with baseball great Jackie Robinson. Other interviewees include Sala Udin, a 20-year-old from Pittsburgh who heard Dr. King’s speech and changed the course of his life to launch a career in civil rights activism and North Carolina Congressman G.K. Butterfield, who attended the March and became known for his successful litigation of voting rights cases. On August 28, 2013 — the actual 50th anniversary — PBS Black Culture Connection will host a full day of special online events and activities including screenings of THE MARCH during which viewers can interact with some of the film’s participants, online chats with original March participants and community leaders, and hosted discussions about the many aspects of the March and the Civil Rights Movement.

Airs Tuesday, August 27th at 7p.m.

O

n August 28, 1963 roughly 250,000 Americans participated in the “Great March On Washington For Jobs and Freedom.” Organized by labor and social activists A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin, the event brought together major Civil Rights Organizations, Labor Unions, religious leaders, and ordinary citizens who sought economic and social justice for black Americans. Many Wisconsinites participated in the March, most of them bussing the nine hundred miles to the nation’s capital for the event. Most people have heard Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have A Dream Speech,” which he delivered at the March. It was signature moment for the event and the modern Civil Rights Movement. But the March was much more than Dr. King’s speech and Black Nouveau looks at the issues and results of that fateful day. Host Joanne Williams recounts the events leading to the March, talks with participants Ted Mack (Milwaukee’s CORE Chapter); Cong. John Lewis (one of the ten organizers); Vel Phillips (first African-American and woman on Milwaukee’s Common Council); Kurt L. Schmoke, (former Mayor of Baltimore, MD,); and Rachelle Horowitz (Transportation Coordinator for Bayard Rustin). She also talks with Dr. Lyn Hughes (founder of the A. Philip Randolph Pullman Porter Museum) Harry Rubenstein (co-curator “Changing America: “The Emancipation Proclamation 1863 and the March on Washington 1963,” exhibit currently at the Smithsonian.) and UW historian William P. Jones, author of “The March On Washington.” Go to www.mptv.org/localshows/black_nouveau/ for additional links and expanded interviews with the program participants. 5

QUEEN VICTORIA’S EMPIRE

A

t the time of Queen Victoria’s birth in 1819, England was an agrarian society. Within a few short decades, this small island nation would be transformed into an industrial superpower, with an empire spanning the globe. QUEEN VICTORIA’S EMPIRE is both the story of this remarkable time and an engaging portrait of a queen who ruled over a fifth of the world’s population. It is the story of influential men who would shape a distinctively British imperialism: Gladstone, Disraeli, Livingstone, Rhodes and Prince Albert, Victoria’s husband. Whether driven by profit, passion or noble deeds, these figures would fuel expansion unequaled in history, forever changing Britain and the lands it controlled. Personal accounts, lush re-enactments and evocative cinematography from former outposts of the Empire, including Africa and India, recount the dramatic clash of personalities and cultures that would drive Victoria’s remarkable 64-year reign.

Wednesday, October 16, 7:00 p.m.

he star of Auntie Mame, His Girl Friday, Gypsy, and scores of other memorable films and Broadway shows, Rosalind Russell came into her own during Hollywood's Golden Era and was paired with many of the luminaries of that time, including Joan Crawford, Cary Grant, and Kirk Douglas. Long an advocate for those with disabilities, late in life this unique and pioneering talent was struck with severe rheumatoid arthritis, which derailed her career. Thereafter, Russell championed the needs of millions also suffering from the disease. 8/12, 9p.m. 10HD

GREAT PERFORMANCES AT THE MET: PARSIFAL

S

tar tenor Jonas Kaufmann sings the title role in the Met’s new production of Wagner’s final masterpiece Parsifal, staged by acclaimed French Canadian director François Girard in his Met debut. The Wagnerians assembled for the deeply meditative opera about sin, redemption, pain and healing includes German bass René Pape as the wise knight Gurnemanz; Swedish soprano Katarina a Dalayman as the wayward temptress Kundry; Swedish baritone Peter Mattei as the wounded king Amfortas; and Russian bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin as the evil wizard Klingsor. Italian maestro Daniele Gatti conducts Wagner’s powerful and complex score. American bass-baritone Eric Owens hosts and conducts backstage interviews with the stars. 8/25, 8a.m. 10HD
