Applauding Our Sponsors! A
s we gather together with friends and loved ones during this holiday season, we at MPTV would like to extend a warm year-end thank-you to all our corporate and foundation underwriters and sponsors. In this joyous and festive season, we would like to honor and celebrate the commitment and support of these outstanding sponsors. Financial support from our generous sponsors makes it possible for MPTV to bring a wide genre of outstanding programs into your home, and every home, throughout southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois every day of the year. MPTV broadcasts PBS programs that include the very best programs in arts, entertainment, history, children’s literacy, home improvement, science and nature, cooking, and public affairs. Our underwriting sponsors also support MPTV’s locally produced award-winning programs. Our local productions include Adelante, which discusses the issues and concerns of the Latino community, Black Nouveau, celebrating the contributions, strengths, and issues of the African American community, and Interchange and 4th Street Forum on the Road, programs which feature discussion of the news, issues and concerns facing Wisconsin and the nation. Fans of MPTV’s locally produced show, Outdoor Wisconsin, continue to enjoy features on Wisconsin’s hunting, fishing, and natural habitat. For a fresh look at the communities that make our state great, tune in to Around the Corner with John McGivern. Our underwriting sponsors also enable MPTV to produce special programs, such as the national broadcast of the Peter Pan by Milwaukee Ballet, our annual Outdoor Wisconsin’s Deerhunt Special, and Waking in Oak Creek. Tune in this month to Christmas In the Basilica With The Bel Canto Chorus. An underwriting sponsor will often choose their favorite program to support, such as Nature, Nova, or American Experience. Perhaps their focus is on current events and news, so they choose to underwrite PBS Newshour or FRONTLINE. Some underwriting sponsors choose perennial favorites such as Masterpiece, Antiques Roadshow, or This Old House Hour. Perhaps their mission is children’s literacy, where they have a plethora of children’s programs to choose from; Sesame Street, Arthur, Peg and Cat, and Wild Kratts. MPTV is deeply appreciative of our underwriters’ financial support which helps us continue our mission to bring you the finest in television programs every day of every year. These programs engage, inform, entertain, and surprise us, contributing to the fabric and quality of life in our community. It is with deep gratitude we honor and celebrate the dedication and vision of our underwriters. Thank you!
There are many sponsorship opportunities for organizations who are interested in supporting great television programs on Milwaukee Public Television. To find out more about how your organization can become a program underwriter and be seen on MPTV, contact Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu or (414) 297-8008.

I
t should come as no surprise that Bing Crosby graces the cover of Fine Tuning this month of December. Crosby recorded the best-selling single of all time, with sales in excess of 50 million copies worldwide, a song that has a decidedly December theme: “White Christmas.” AMERICAN MASTERS: BING CROSBY REDISCOVERED, premiering this month on MPTV, is a new documentary that explores the life and legend of the iconic performer whose trademark bass-baritone voice made him among the best-selling recording artists of the 20th century. Crosby fans take note: a new CD that features songs heard in the program – including 16 previously unreleased recordings – will be available beginning this month. Music is an important element in many of our December experiences, and MPTV provides a veritable soundtrack you can enjoy throughout the month, no matter your musical tastes. As you thumb through the magazine, take note of specials that feature the music of; Peter, Paul and Mary, Journey, Gregg Allman, Bruce Springsteen, the pop groups of the mid-60’s, Celtic Thunder, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Joe Bonamassa, and others. To celebrate Christmas, it’s the music of; Renee Fleming, the Irish Rovers, the St. Olaf Choir, Lawrence Welk, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir featuring Deborah Voigt and John Rhys-Davies and much more. On New Year’s Eve, we’ve got the New York Philharmonic with Dianne Reeves and Norm Lewis in an all-Gershwin show, and Michael Feinstein and friends from the newly restored Rainbow Room in New York’s Rockefeller Center. Sit back and enjoy! And Wisconsin’s talented artists will be in the spotlight, too, in December. WISCONSIN FROM THE AIR features gorgeous footage of our state set to an original score by Wisconsin

composer Matthew Hollingsworth; the 2014 STATE HONORS CONCERTS features Wisconsin’s finest high school musicians in concert; the Emmy Award-winning PETER PAN BY MILWAUKEE BALLET is a wonderful treat for the whole family; and on Christmas night, join us for CHRISTMAS IN THE BASILICA WITH THE BEL CANTO CHORUS, taped at the magnificent Basilica of St. Josaphat in Milwaukee, with the Stained Glass Brass Ensemble and the Bel Canto Boy Choir joining musical director Richard Hynson and the Chorus. And don’t forget that any time, day or night, you can find classical music on MPTV CLASSICAL- Channel 36.4 (channel 978 on Time Warner Cable) and mainstream jazz music on MPTV JAZZ- Channel 36.5 (channel 979 on Time Warner Cable)! We have recently revamped both services to improve reliability, so check them out. MPTV is truly the place for terrific musical entertainment this month. So please tune in, and from the staff, board, and volunteers of Milwaukee Public Television, our best wishes to you for joyous holidays and a Happy New Year!

THIRTEEN’s American Masters Series Produces New Documentary
BING CROSBY REDISCOVERED Featuring Unprecedented Access to Crosby’s Archives
Premieres nationwide Tuesday, December 2nd on Channel 10
B
ing Crosby (May 3, 1903-October 14, 1977) was, without doubt, the most popular and influential multi-media star of the first half of the 20th century. For more than three decades, through radio, film, television and records, he reigned supreme. The new documentary American Masters: Bing Crosby Rediscovered, premiering on Channel 10 on Tuesday, December 2nd at 7 p.m. as the series’ Season 28 finale, explores the life and legend of this iconic performer, revealing a man far more complex than his public persona. Crosby’s estate, HLC Properties, Ltd., granted American Masters unprecedented access to the entertainer’s personal and professional archives, including never-before-seen home movies, Dictabelt recordings, photos and more. Narrated by Stanley Tucci, the film features new interviews with all surviving members of Crosby’s immediate family — wife Kathryn, daughter Mary and sons Harry and Nathaniel. The film reveals Crosby’s struggles with his first wife, Dixie Lee, and their sons Gary, Dennis, Phillip and Lindsay. Mary addresses accusations of abuse first published in Gary’s 1983 memoir, which tarnished their father’s legacy. Gary speaks candidly about both his and his mother’s alcoholism as well as his difficulties with his father in a never-before-seen 1987 interview. Other new interviews include singers Tony Bennett and Michael Feinstein, record producer Ken Barnes, biographer Gary Giddins, and writers Buz Kohan and Larry Grossman, who both share the story behind Crosby’s Christmas special duet with David Bowie. “I’ve never seen an entertainer more comfortable in his own skin, more certain of who he was,” says Emmy-winning director Robert Trachtenberg, whose past films for American Masters include Mel Brooks: Make a Noise, On Cukor, Gene Kelly: Anatomy of a Dancer and Cary Grant: A Class Apart. “With the new material I’ve found, I think the breadth, depth and candor of his story will hopefully allow people to see him in a new light.” Thirty-seven years after his death, Crosby remains the most recorded performer in history with nearly 400 hit singles, an achievement no one — not Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley or the 4
Beatles — has come close to matching. A brilliant entrepreneur, Crosby played an important role in the development of the postwar recording industry. As one of Hollywood’s most popular actors, he won the Oscar for 1944’s Going My Way and starred in the iconic “Road” films with Bob Hope. “We naturally think of Bing at Christmastime, but with more No. 1 recordings than anyone, it is easy to overlook all of his other achievements. Thankfully, this film delves deeply into all of his remarkable work, and will surprise many viewers with a unique perspective on his private life,” says Michael Kantor, executive producer of American Masters.

Southeastern Wisconsin Kids in Grades K-3 Encouraged to Submit Original Stories
Looking for a fun winter break activity for your children? Want to encourage creativity and learning? Milwaukee Public Television has just the thing. MPTV’s annual PBS KIDS Writers Contest begins on January 1st and runs through March 13th, 2015. The contest, made possible in part by local financial support from the Harley-Davidson Foundation, is designed to promote the advancement of children's literacy skills through hands-on, active learning. The contest empowers children in grades K-3 to celebrate creativity and build literacy skills by writing and illustrating their very own stories. Here’s how the contest works. Children in Dodge, Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha Counties can submit their entries to the PBS KIDS Writers Contest. In the spring of 2015, MPTV will select local winners and award prizes. The local winners will then be entered into the national contest where a panel of esteemed judges will rank the top 12 entries. National winners will be announced during the summer of 2015 and the winning stories will be featured on MPTV. To enter the contest and for more information on entry rules and contest resources, visit www.mptv.org/kids&family.

Area Children Visit Santa in
MPTV’s Annual Letters to Santa Baking a yule cake, constructing Chinese lanterns, or making Spanish candy, are all examples of shared holiday experiences. Celebrate the holidays with an international look into seasonal traditions from around the world. Milwaukee Area Technical College’s Television and Video Production students bring smiles to area children and give them a chance to share their letters to Santa while they learn about holiday culture in other lands. The annual series begins on December 15th at 5:30 p.m. and airs on the eight weekdays leading up to Christmas day. The series explores holiday culture, food and other traditions. Countries represented include Mexico, France, Germany, China, Brazil, Greece, Ireland, Spain, and of course, traditions right here in southeastern Wisconsin. Add some ethnic traditions to your family’s holiday celebration with Letters to Santa.

THE BEATLES INVADE MILWAUKEE In 1964, the Beatles were making history, with several hits on Billboard Magazine’s top 40, millions of records sold, and two rousing appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show. Milwaukee was only one of 25 cities on the Beatles first American tour. The 50th anniversary of the concert is celebrated with former WOKY DJ Bob Barry--“the 5th Beatle,” musicologist Joel Whitburn, Alexandra and Adele Topping, daughters of Nick Topping, who promoted the show in Milwaukee; Historian Diana Belscamper, and numerous individuals who attended the concert.

MPTV Legacy Society Strategies to Maximize Your Gifts As a supporter of Milwaukee Public Television, you make significant investments year after year through Membership contributions that allow us to bring the best in commercial-free programming to millions every day. Did you know that there are a number of ways to make gifts to public television this year that can help you meet multiple objectives?* • Arrange a gift through your will or living trust. You can give a fixed amount, a percentage of your estate or “what’s left” after loved ones have been provided for. • Your gifts can be funded using taxable withdrawals from an IRA or other retirement account and can result in a tax-free disposition of these funds. • Life insurance policies with a cash value that are no longer needed f or their original purpose can be an excellent way to fund gift commitments. You can arrange to make charitable gifts over a period of time and also leave a tax-free inheritance for your loved ones. • Low-yielding assets can be transformed into a source of increased income while making meaningful gifts. • Name public television to receive all of a portion of what remains in investment or bank accounts. For more information, we encourage you to seef professional advice for help with your will, living trust or other plans. Ask your benefits coordinator, insurance agent or investment advisor for the forms required to change beneficiary designations. Please let us know if we can furnish more information to your or your advisors to assist you in the charitable aspects of your plans by calling (414) 297-8710. If you have already made arrangements to include Milwaukee Public Television in your estate planning, you’re a part of the MPTV Legacy Society. Just let us know about your gift intent, and we’ll be sure to recognize you as a part of this important group. *Source: Reprinted with permission of RFSCO. © 2014
