t this time one year ago, all of us at Milwaukee PBS held hopes for what promised to be an exciting 2020. The Democratic National Convention would be held in Milwaukee in July at the Fiserv Forum, just down the block from our station. Milwaukee PBS was scheduled to serve as the production hub for a contingent of PBS NewsHour reporters, producers and anchors who would soon be descending on our city. We were also looking forward to this fall, as Milwaukee PBS was set to broadcast the first subscription weekend of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra in the newly restored Bradley Symphony Center. And then the world changed. I will never forget the day in mid-March when Milwaukee PBS team members and MATC colleagues hurriedly packed their belongings and said goodbye before rushing home at of the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Around that same time, I received heartbreaking news that my dear friend of 40 years, whom I’d just visited in New York City in January, had died from COVID-19. Then the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor became the events that forced our nation to begin seriously addressing issues of racial injustice. Nothing would ever be the same.

Since March, working with iPhones and laptops from home, Milwaukee PBS team members have captured this
time in our collective history. There's an incredible body of short- and long-form video stories on issues that define who we are and will one day help those who follow us know who we were. I have been humbled by the tragedies we have endured. I am grateful to every Milwaukee PBS staff member for their continued hard work during these difficult times. We stand together with our college, MATC, as it continues to focus on student success during these most challenging times. And I value the support of each Milwaukee PBS member. Through your calls, emails and generous financial support, you’ve shared how much you value public television in our community. I cannot express deeply enough how much your investment has been needed and appreciated this year. In the new year, Milwaukee PBS will continue to be a convener of the difficult conversations needed to address issues of race and economic equity. It will continue to serve as your trusted resource for information about the treatments and vaccines that we pray will bring solutions to the pandemic that has shaken us to our core. We will always keep you in our hearts and in our thoughts as we all continue on this uncharted journey through life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,
Vice President & General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

Letter from
Dr. Vicki J. Martin
As 2020 draws to a close, I continue to be proud of Milwaukee PBS’ work to share the stories of our community amid three concurrent crises: COVID-19, the resulting economic fallout and a focus on issues of racial justice.
Our college has confronted these issues directly. We converted 1,300 classes online in the spring and held 60% of classes online in the fall – with strong health and safety practices to serve students on campus. We committed to provide $6.5 million in federal CARES Act assistance directly to students and we distributed 1,300 Chromebooks and hundreds of Wi-Fi hot spots to help close the digital divide. MATC also has strengthened its commitment to close equity gaps so that all students can succeed. The Milwaukee region often appears at the very bottom in measures of economic prosperity for people of color. Sadly, we are home to some of the biggest gaps in education, health disparities, incarceration, income, job opportunities and home ownership. Along with Carthage College, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and educational technology firm EAB, MATC is committed to eliminating equity gaps in education in this decade. We will help the students most often left behind – low income, first generation and students of color – by implementing more than a dozen proven, research-based strategies. We will update academic policies, establish common academic pathways and provide equity-mindedness training to educational leaders. Other communities, regions and institutes of higher education have faced similar challenges, persevered and succeeded in reducing or eliminating equity gaps. We can achieve this same worthy goal. As we make this critical commitment, we also have the opportunity to celebrate students who persevered through the crises we face and earned an MATC associate degree, technical diploma or certificate. I hope you can watch the December commencement broadcast on Milwaukee PBS. These graduates represent what is possible for so many individuals in our community. I look forward to helping more students achieve their dreams as we eliminate the gaps and barriers that stand in the way of success. Sincerely,
President of Milwaukee Area Technical College

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Meet Jerry Dutscheck, who has volunteered his expertise as an appraiser since the Milwaukee PBS Appraisal Fair began 15 years ago. Jerry, an MATC alumnus, has seen many interesting artifacts and heard many fascinating stories over the years. His passion and dedication can be seen through his collections and heard while he reminisces about past appraisals—lifetimes of history and family stories, all of them priceless. Why do you volunteer with Milwaukee PBS? Jerry: I volunteer because it allows me to give back, share my knowledge and to learn. I actually started my career with PBS; I went through the broadcast engineering program at MATC and interned at the PBS studios. So, I was able to see firsthand all of the work that goes into creating the great shows and local productions. In a way, it's partially giving back to Milwaukee PBS for the opportunities it gave me, because I wouldn't be where I am now without them. Plus, the Appraisal Fair is also a great learning and teaching opportunity. A great event that really brings our community together. As appraisers, we get to see all kinds of great items and hear great stories and family lore that has been passed down for generations. We get to look at fantastic items that really mean something to the people and families who bring them. People like to hear about the potential monetary value of their items and everyone really loves to hear what we know about that piece that has been hanging on the mantle or in the curio cabinet for years. Have you had any memorable experiences with Milwaukee PBS? Jerry: Sometimes people know things that we don't know, so the learning goes both ways. Just this past year I was able to identify a little pin that had vexed collectors for a long time. A woman brought it in with some other things and I'm like, “What is this?” She had worked at a factory during World War II and she said, “Oh, that's a factory pin from Nash-Kelvinator,” a company that made items like refrigerators, but during the war they produced other things. Well, this was a production pin given to workers when they made airplane parts during the war. A lot of this information has never been written down, it's only available by word of mouth, so learning these kinds of things from the owners is invaluable. What do you do when you’re not appraising items? Jerry: I’m the director of the audio-visual department at Alverno College. I’m also an adjunct instructor there, teaching video, podcasting and other media and communication-related courses. In addition, for the past 20 years I’ve also owned and operated the Military Collectibles Shop in West Allis, and I am one of the owners of the Waukesha Antique Mall. Along with all of that, I am married to my wonderful wife Shari, who helps me in my military business. She’s in charge of all of our online work. I have been actively collecting military items since I was around 9 years old. What is something you would like to share with Milwaukee PBS members? Jerry: I just published a book about the history of United States service flags, which will be available soon from Elm Grove Publishing in Texas. And I’d like to share this advice—document your family history, write people’s names on photos. In addition, if you have something that you think might be valuable, have it checked out before you throw anything away. I have heard too many times what people didn’t bring to the Appraisal Fair and what they threw away because it was moth-eaten or dirty. What would you tell someone who is thinking about volunteering? Do you have a message to share? Jerry: Volunteering is a great way to be involved with your community, to be part of something greater than yourself. You get to meet some amazing people and the food they provide for volunteers has always been awesome!

LETTERS TO
SANTA
It’s the most wonderful time of the year, the time when Milwaukee PBS broadcasts the annual favorite, LETTERS TO SANTA. MATC’s Television and Video Students produce this tribute to the holiday and this year’s programs are set at the North Pole Post Office. Santa and Jolly the Postmaster Elf depend on Amelia Elfheart, the trusty mail elf pilot, to collect letters from children all over the world and deliver them to the North Pole Post Office. In addition to featuring dozens of community children who tell Santa just what they are wishing for this Christmas, the programs explore themes like the importance of teamwork and why it’s the thought that counts. MATC students get the opportunity to create, produce and promote programs for air. From executive producing to studio work, editing and final broadcast, the students do it all. It’s a valuable hands-on learning experience that helps build a resume. Watch LETTERS TO SANTA, December 21 through 24 at 2:30 pm on Milwaukee PBS 10.1.
