WISCONSIN MATHEMATICS COUNCIL Cyberchase
After the excitement and frenzy of the holidays, it is time to enjoy February in Wisconsin. As the daylight hours become a bit longer, it’s a great time to take a walk in the snow, skate at a local ice-rink, talk with your friends about a show you’ve seen on MPTV, or cuddle up on the couch or by a warm fire to watch one of MPTV’s great programs. The Jerome & Dorothy Holz Family Foundation has been a consistent supporter of MPTV children’s educational programming, underwriting the children’s program Clifford the Big Red Dog, and this year, the PBS program American Experience. Clifford the Big Red Dog is seen Mondays through Fridays at 5:00 a.m. on MPTV. American Experience, TV’s most-watched history series, brings to life compelling stories from our past that inform our understanding of our world today. American Experience has an exciting roster of programs in February, including “The Amish Shunned” on February 4th, “Billy the Kid” on February 11th, about the 19th century’s notorious outlaw of the American West “The Grand Coulee Dam” and “The Rise & Fall of Penn Station” both on February 18. Jerry and Dorothy Holz established the Holz Family Foundation in 1996. Jerry’s dad opened Holz Motors in 1914 in Hales Corners, and Jerry, growing up in an apartment over the family’s dealership downstairs, grew up immersed in every aspect of the auto business. Holz Motors received numerous awards over the years, including Dealer of the Year Award from 2002-2008, and 2010, and the GMAC Champion of Life Award. This year Holz Motors is celebrating their 100 year anniversary! Jerry Holz and his late wife Dorothy have valued giving back to Hales Corners and the Greater Milwaukee community, and their foundation has been a proud underwriter of MPTV programming. Happy Anniversary to Holz Motors and the Holz Family! Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV. For further information, please contact Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu, or (414) 297-8008.

PRIMETIME LISTINGS

This copy of Fine Tuning would be thinner if it included only our broadcast listings. Among lots of other information you can find here are a variety of community activities that are linked to MPTV productions. The popularity of such activities -- premiere screenings, live tapings, tours, and other special events -- has grown in recent years. It's another way for fans of a program to show their interest in it, and it's a way for the station to get some additional "word of mouth" for some great series and specials. We've got a number of program-related opportunities coming up, and we'd love for you to join us at them! In early February, we're proud to premiere our newest MPTV documentary special, MEMORIALIZING KOSCIUSZKO, about one community's efforts to restore an iconic statue on Milwaukee's south side. We will have a free preview of the documentary on January 28 at 6:00 pm at the Polish Center of Wisconsin in Franklin.

includes a great meal, raffles, auctions, and special surprises. It is scheduled for February 26 at the. Country Springs Hotel in Pewaukee. Later this year, there will be studio audience opportunities for our new broadcast series NEXT AVENUE COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS, and a special local prescreening of the PBS special, PETER PAN BY MILWAUKEE BALLET, produced by MPTV.
Our wildly popular Thursday night series AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN McGIVERN has a pre-screening of every episode in the featured community. The new programs premiering in February visit Milwaukee’s Mitchell Street (screening at St. Anthony Church), Prairie du Chien (City Hall), Cudahy (Joe’s K Ranch), and Wausau (screening location TBA). John and the rest of the production crew are at most of the screenings, and there are usually refreshments, AROUND THE CORNER DVDs and other merchandise for sale, and free parking!
Finally, if you'd like to get a taste of what it would be like to live in DOWNTON ABBEY, you might like to join us April 18-25 on MPTV’s trip to London and the English countryside, which includes a visit to Highclere Castle, the actual setting for DOWNTON!
4th STREET FORUM -- Wisconsin's only weekly televised town hall meeting -- gives you the rare opportunity to be in an interactive studio audience for a broadcast. The program is taped Thursdays at noon at historic Turner Hall, 1034 N. 4th Street, Milwaukee, and as an audience member, you may have the opportunity to ask the panel a question. Lunch is available for purchase.
We appreciate your support for MPTV -- and we enjoy your company when you can join us at these special MPTV community activities!
For 22 years, fans of the MPTV production OUTDOOR WISCONSIN have not only looked forward to the series itself but to the annual OUTDOOR WISCONSIN Banquet. It
Additional information about these special events and activities that complement the actual broadcasts of our programs can be found here in Fine Tuning or online at mptv.org. Or you can call the station at 414-271-1036.

F E AT U R E The Brash, Brilliant Doctor Martin Ellingham
Makes a Return Visit in DOC MARTIN VI "Completely addictive" – Slate "Absolutely bloody hilarious" – London Evening Standard
What happens when a gruff physician flees big-city life
to work as a general doctor in a sleepy, picturesque English coastline town? The cultures clash and the sparks fly in the sixth season of DOC MARTIN, a catchy comedy mixing elements of classic British sitcoms with sharp medical drama and a quirky, lovable cast of characters. DOC MARTIN VI, will air on Milwaukee Public Television beginning February 13, at 9p.m. on Channel 36.
At the end of the last season, the couple's baby boy, James Henry, was kidnapped by a well-meaning but deranged pharmacist named Mrs. Tishell. The nightmare brought the couple closer together and prompted a marriage proposal from the Doc to Louisa for a second time. As the new season gets under way, the town is buzzing with arrangements for the wedding of Martin and Louisa. Will they finally tie the knot, or will the villagers have to put the confetti back in the box again? As the series unfolds, Aunt Ruth moves into the village, 4
Burt cooks up another money- making scheme and Morwenna tries Internet dating with surprising results. The Doc continues to deal with the strange and quirky personalities of Portwenn, and attempts to adjust to his new life with Louisa and baby James. But, despite his best efforts, the Doc continues to find trouble. He and Louisa host a disastrous dinner party, the new nanny walks out, and later, the Doc attends a dreadful playgroup for James Henry. Plus, his crippling blood phobia is back. New cast members Annabelle Apsion (the temporary pharmacist), Felix Scott (baby James Henry's nanny), and Jennifer Cardew (Bert Large's love interest) join the veteran cast for another exciting season of life in Portwenn. A humorous, hearty glimpse into the culture clash between big-city and small-country living, the sixth installment of DOC MARTIN is sure to have viewers on the edge of their seats.

First of all, the electronic version allows viewers to click on links to learn more about their favorite shows, purchase special event and concert tickets, renew your membership, and much more. MEMORIALIZING KOSCIUSZKO
I
n February of 2013, the sculpture of Polish patriot Tadeusz Kosciuszko was removed from its perch at Kosciuszko Park and shipped to an art restoration facility in Ohio for a complete overhaul and cleaning. MPTV was there to capture this event. This documentary tells the story of the Polish general’s life and his involvement with the American Revolution, his role in design at West Point, his return to Poland and the struggle for Polish independence, his capture by the Tsar and his return to the United States in 1796. Kosciuszko’s story is one of dedication, patriotism and devotion.

hen we began taping segments for Outdoor Wisconsin back in the summer of 1984, if you had asked me how many years I thought the show might last, I would have answered, “Two or three, maybe.” I honestly thought we’d exhaust our subject matter by then and it would be time to move on to other things. I figured we’d fish for bass, walleyes, panfish and trout and hunt for deer, ducks, pheasants and rabbits a couple of times each, visit several wildlife artists, canoe a river or two, look at a few conservation projects, ski a trail here and there and pretty much run out of ideas. I should have known better. Thirty years later, we have only scratched the surface of possible segments. With 15,000 lakes, 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, and eight million acres of public land in county, state and national forests and parks, Wisconsin is so rich in natural resources we could explore a new lake, river or forest every week for a century and never run out of new places to see. Likewise with exciting things to do.
Over the years, we have hiked, biked, skied, snowboarded, snowshoed, curled, surfed, kayaked, canoed, hang-glided, skydived, skated, roller bladed, zip-lined, rock-climbed, logrolled, camped, spelunked, skateboarded, lawn bowled, sailed, birded, butterflied, star-gazed, geocached, and photographed our way across the state and have ridden everything from horses to hot-air balloons. We’ve joined physically challenged folks to hunt, ski, waterski, and fish. We’ve met artists who work with every tool from brushes to blowtorches. We’ve harvested cranberries and cattails, mint and mushrooms. And we’ve made birchbark canoes, bamboo fly rods, duck decoys and all manner of fishing lures. We’ve hunted deer, ducks, geese, pheasants, grouse, rabbits and arrowheads. We’ve even hunted with falcons. We’ve ice fished for bluegills and fly fished for muskies. We’ve tagged along with DNR staff and volunteers to survey black bears, fishers, martens, deer, turkeys, waterfowl and fish of all species. We’ve looked at efforts to control invasive garlic mustard, purple loosestrife, buckthorn, gobies, and zebra mussels. We’ve interviewed such conservation notables as Gaylord Nelson, Fran Hamerstrom, Will Allen, and the children of Aldo Leopold. We’ve had fun playing archery golf, snow golf and disc golf. And, yes, we’ve stuck our nose where the wild rose grows.
8
This year we’re shooting Teddy Roosevelt’s Gatling gun, learning how to throw an atlatl and joining a group of teenage ski jumpers. I can’t begin to count the miles I’ve logged driving from Green Bay to where the St. Croix Sings and from Kettle Moraine to Superior’s shore. In all those years and over all those miles, the real star of the show has been Wisconsin, a state blessed with a great variety of natural resources and people who know the proper way to enjoy and conserve them. It has been a privilege to work with so many talented segment producers whose wit and humor have given Outdoor Wisconsin its spark. Nancy Frank was our resident wildlife and wild plants expert for our first decade and beyond. She and I also cooked up a lot of wild game recipes and even published a cookbook. Ron Anderson had a unique talent for crafting our raw footage into a plausible story. He taught me early on, “We’re not fishing – we’re making television.” Linda Cieslik and Larry Bandy were eager to try any sport or challenge. Larry competed in the Ironman Triathlon. Linda went horseback riding, windsurfing and skydiving. She brought her naturalist training to segments on wild plants and animals, and we even took her goose hunting once. Tony Wood and Mondy Carter brought their acting talents and quick wit to ice-skating, skateboarding, rock climbing and snowshow baseball.
talented cast of producers and led a team of videographers, audio engineers and editors to create more than 1,500 episodes. Jack’s organizational skills left the show’s archives in good shape, and we have been able to carry on. Tiff Pua guided us through our 29th season, and now Maryann Lazarski has taken the reins as producer-director as we launch our 30th year. We plan to continue to take you places you haven’t been, show you things you haven’t seen and help further your enjoyment of our wonderful state. And if you’ve “been there and done that,” we hope you’ll sit back and enjoy them again with us on your TV screen.
Claudia Looze, Tess Gallun and Diane Martin produced a variety of segments that always told an interesting story. Sharon Morissey’s horticultural expertise gave us tips on gardening, landscaping and controlling invasive plants.
Come celebrate our 30th year with us at the Outdoor Wisconsin Banquet, Feb. 26th at the Country Springs Hotel. See the back cover for details. I hope to see you there!
Deb Wolniak has done everything from physical fitness training to dog handling, ballooning and hunting. Judy Nugent is an allaround outdoorswoman, who paddles a canoe and handles a fly rod with the best of them. Our newest producer, Jeff Kelm, is a former racecar driver, seasoned hunter and world-class ice angler who I am confident will give the show a jolt of youthful enthusiasm. Tom Newbauer, our fishing educator and storyteller, has been with us from Day One. A viewer favorite, Tom puts his unique stamp on every segment and often provides a dose of muchneeded comic relief. Our founding executive producer-director Jack Abrams retired in 2012 after a 30-year career at MPTV. Jack assembled that

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: THE AMISH SHUNNED Follow seven former members of an Amish community, filmed over the course of 12 months, as they reflect on their decisions to leave one of the most closed and tightly knit communities in the United States. Interwoven through the stories are the voices of Amish men and women who remain staunchly loyal to their traditions and faith. They explain the importance of obedience, the strong ties that bind their communities together and the pain they endure when a loved one falls away. 2/8, 9a.m. 36HD

O
ne of the greatest architectural and engineering achievements of its time, New York’s Pennsylvania Station opened to the public in 1910. No one could imagine that this architectural marvel built for the ages would be torn down a few decades later to make way for Madison Square Garden. Yet its destruction galvanized New York saving Grand Central Station and countless other historic structures.

T
hanks to social media, today’s teens are able to interact directly with their culture — artists, celebrities, movies, brands and even one another — in ways never before possible. But is that real empowerment? Or do marketers still hold the upper hand? In “Generation Like,” FRONTLINE explores how the perennial teen quest for identity and connection has migrated to social media — and exposes the game of cat-andmouse that corporations are playing with these young consumers.

GREAT PERFORMANCES: STING: THE LAST SHIP
E
xploring a range of universal themes, The Last Ship dramatizes the impact of the demise of the ship-building industry in Sting’s home town of Wallsend, England. Having grown up in the shadow of the Swan Hunter Shipyard, Sting was deeply affected by the subject. Sting performs an intimate concert of highlights from the show, providing a narrative outline for the musical as well as revealing the autobiographical underpinnings for the songs.

EXTRAORDINARY WOMEN: AUDREY HEPBURN
A
udrey Hepburn was one of the most stylish women the world has ever seen, and she took Hollywood by storm. Winning an Oscar for her first major film role in Roman Holiday, she went on to star in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s and My Fair Lady”. But behind the glamour was a life marked by tragedy and loss. She endured the horrors of the Nazioccupation of Holland, and witnessed the deportations of Jewish families to the death camps.
