his month, we would like to acknowledge the visionary and generous commitment of the Helen Daniels Bader Fund, a Bader Philanthropy. For many years, the Helen Daniels Bader Fund has been committed to addressing the major social needs of the greater Milwaukee community. In 1992, Daniel and David Bader, the sons of Alfred and Helen Daniels Bader, founded the Helen Bader Foundation in memory of their late mother. Throughout her life, Helen Bader was deeply devoted to the well-being of the greater Milwaukee community through her compassionate support of workforce development, aging, and arts programs. The Helen Daniels Bader Fund has made a major commitment to Milwaukee PBS through its generous support of Next Avenue for the last five years. Next Avenue is public media’s only national journalism service for America’s Boomers, people over the age of 50. Every day, Next Avenue invites viewers to consider what is next, what lies just ahead, and what will be revealed in their lives. By exploring questions big and small, it sparks action and opens up a world of possibilities. With the Helen Daniels Bader Fund’s generous support, Milwaukee PBS has been able to offer community conversations on such topics as health and well-being, money and security, work and purpose, living and learning, and caregiving. In 2015, 2016, and 2017, the Helen Daniels Bader Fund supported Next Avenue Conversations and Next Avenue Moments, both Milwaukee PBS outreach efforts. All of our Community Conversations and Next Avenue Moments are televised and available on our website. In 2017, the Helen Daniels Bader Fund will support PBS Milwaukee’s locally produced program, The Arts Page. The Helen Daniels Bader Fund also supported Milwaukee PBS’ 4th Street Forum, a weekly local issues program, and the 2013 Milwaukee PBS’ televised production of First Stage Milwaukee’s “To the Promised Land.” With the formation of the Isabel and Alfred Bader Fund in 2015, Bader Philanthropies has expanded its investment by supporting the PBS Arts Fall Festivals in 2015 and 2016. “Milwaukee PBS is a treasured community resource for people of all ages and backgrounds. They produce high quality programs that are accessible to tens of thousands of people on topics and issues we care about,” said Daniel J. Bader, president and CEO, Bader Philanthrophies. Milwaukee PBS is deeply thankful for its collaboration with the Helen Daniels Bader Fund and the Isabel and Alfred Bader Fund. We greatly appreciate their ongoing commitment to Next Avenue and fine arts programming on Milwaukee PBS. ilwaukee PBS strives to reflect the communities it serves with locally produced television series, online content and community events that focus on issues that impact us all. It's part of our mission and our passion. Our hope is that the stories we tell on programs like 10thirtysix, Black Nouveau, ¡Adelante!, Around the Corner with John McGivern, The Arts Page, and Outdoor Wisconsin help us to get to know each other better. Behind the scenes and off the television screen, Milwaukee PBS also aims to engage viewers with community events. Recently, the station previewed Alzheimer’s: Every Minute Counts, a powerful documentary on a topic that has touched many of our lives. On March 4th, in partnership with Milwaukee Area Technical College’s Early Childhood Education program, Milwaukee PBS will host a live event to provide information to parents and family caregivers about the importance of the early years in childhood development. A panel of experts in the field will engage in dialogue with parents and answer questions about how parents can support their children’s health development and improve school readiness. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Depish Navsaria, MD, MPH, MSLIS and other experts in the field of early childhood development. Topics may include brain/childhood development; the role of noncognitive skills (e.g. Executive Function); what parents can do: adult/child interactions; play and reading; parenting styles; nutrition; and other issues.

The event - What Matters Most: Your Child’s First Five Years - will take place from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 4th in the Milwaukee PBS building at 8th and Highland in the C Auditorium. (The live event will also be taped for broadcast in early spring). Tickets are free; please make your reservation by calling (414) 297-7514 or via web at milwaukeepbs.org. And please share this information with your friends and anyone who might benefit from this event. What Matters Most: Your Child’s First Five Years is made possible with funding from the Herzfeld Foundation, with additional support from the Terri and Verne Holoubek Family Foundation.

MAYA ANGELO First feature documentary on the author/activist features exclusive interviews with Dr. Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, Common, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and others

American Masters Presents Exclusive U.S. Broadcast Premiere of Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise February 21

D

istinctly referred to as “a redwood tree, with deep roots in American culture,” Dr. Maya Angelou (April 4, 1928 – May 28, 2014) led a prolific life. As a singer, dancer, activist, poet and writer, she inspired generations with lyrical modern African-American thought that pushed boundaries. Best known for her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (Random House), she gave people the freedom to think about their history in a way they never had before. The first feature documentary about her life, American Masters – Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, premieres nationwide Tuesday, February 21 at 7 p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10 PBS Distribution will release the film on DVD the same day with additional bonus features and on Digital HD February 22. With unprecedented access, filmmakers Bob Hercules and Rita Coburn Whack trace Dr. Angelou’s incredible journey, shedding light on the untold aspects of her life through never-before-seen footage, rare archival photographs and videos and her own words. From her upbringing in the Depression-era South and her early performing career (1957’s Miss Calypso album and Calypso Heat Wave film, Jean Genet’s 1961 play The Blacks) to her work with Malcolm X in Ghana, and her many writing successes, including her inaugural poem for President Bill Clinton, American Masters – Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise reveals hidden moments of her life during some of America’s most defining moments. The film also features exclusive interviews with Dr. Angelou, her friends and family, including President Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Common, Alfre Woodard, Cicely Tyson, Quincy Jones, Secretary Hillary Clinton, Louis Gossett, Jr., John 4

Singleton, Diahann Carroll, Valerie Simpson, Random House editor Bob Loomis, and Dr. Angelou’s son, Guy Johnson. “It was a unique privilege to be the first filmmakers to tell Dr. Angelou’s full story and exciting to uncover stories that most people hadn’t heard,” said co-director and co-producer Bob Hercules (American Masters – Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance, American Masters – Bill T. Jones: A Good Man, Forgiving Dr. Mengele). “The film reflects on how the events of history, culture and the arts shaped Dr. Angelou’s life, and how she, in turn, helped shape our own worldview through her autobiographical literature and activism,” said co-director and co-producer Rita Coburn Whack (Curators of Culture, Remembering 47th Street, African Roots American Soil). “It is bittersweet that Dr. Angelou takes her rightful place in the American Masters series posthumously,” said executive producer Michael Kantor. “We are fortunate that Bob and Rita captured these insightful interviews with her just prior to her death so we can all learn from her wisdom firsthand.” Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise premiered to critical acclaim at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival. It won the Audience Award at AFI Docs and was featured at notable film festivals worldwide, including Full Frame, Sheffield, IDFA, and Seattle, winning 17 awards on three continents, and has been nominated for an NAACP Image Award.

Black Nouveau honors some African-American Milwaukeeans who are making history in the area. 10thirtysix features a look back at bussing for the Milwaukee public schools in the 1970's. Much of what has been written is from the perspective of the adults who supported, opposed or studied the events. But what was the experience of the children who rode those buses into unfamiliar neighborhoods and to new schools? We talk with some of the "kids", now in their 50's, to see what it was like from the inside. Around the Corner with John McGivern John and the crew visit Stoughton, Delavan, and Grafton, and a special program called “Around the Map in Southeast Wisconsin” that looks at a few of the crew’s favorite people, organizations, or places in southeastern Wisconsin. The Arts Page celebrates Wisconsin anniversaries in the artistic community: the 75th anniversary of the Racine Art Museum's Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts, the 50th anniversary of the state-wide competition of "Watercolor Wisconsin", and a new production of "McGuire" starring Tony-award winner Anthony Crivello at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater that coincides with the 100th anniversary of Marquette basketball and the 40th anniversary of the NCAA championship season led by legendary coach Al McGuire. Outdoor Wisconsin reflects on some outdoor history with visits to the Wisconsin Bowhunting Museum in Clintonville, the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp Museum, the Chippewa Valley Museum in Eau Claire, and the Barnes Museum in Bayfield County. ¡Adelante! features a conversion with immigration attorney Cain Oulahan. He discusses President Obama’s executive order DACA, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, and what the Trump presidency might mean for immigrants who arrived in the United States as minors. Tracks Ahead takes a trip to Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry for a great train story and visits the Hesston Steam Museum in Indiana. Rarely Seen Animal Behavior Captured in

Spy in the Wild, A NATURE Miniseries

From the producers of EarthFlight and Penguins: Spy in the Huddle

Wednesdays, February 1 – March 1, on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10

I

n the most innovative series Nature has ever presented, this five-part production employs over 30 animatronic spy cameras disguised as animals to secretly record behavior in the wild. These “spy cams” reveal animals as having emotions and behavior similar to humans – specifically, a capacity to love, grieve, deceive, and invent. Among the featured spy creatures, which bear an uncanny resemblance to their real counterparts, are: Spy Orangutan, Spy Croc Hatchling, Spy Meerkat, Spy Egret, Spy Tortoise, Spy Prairie Dog, Spy Macaw, Spy Sloth, Spy Cobra, Spy Bushbaby, Spy Squirrel, Spy Adelie, and Spy Baby Hippo. These robotic look-alikes infiltrate the natural world to film surprising behavior among wildlife from around the globe. Spy in the Wild, A NATURE Miniseries airs Wednesdays, February 1st through March 1st, at 7p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10. Episode Descriptions: Love (February 1) Spy Creatures explore the rarely seen emotions of animals, revealing if they are as strong and complex as our own. Join the “scams” as they are accepted into a wild dog pack, witness elephant love, and are mourned by a troop of monkeys. 10

Intelligence (February 8) Spy Creatures infiltrate the world of animal intelligence, ingenuity, and creativity. Watch our spies disguised as animals observe a gray squirrel stealing Spy Nut, a sea otter cracking open a meal, and an orangutan washing with soap. Friendship (February 15) Spy Creatures and their new wild friends rely on each other to look out for predators. A Spy Meerkat babysits meerkat pups while a Spy Cobra pretends to attack the mob. Spy Crocs witness a convenient partnership between real crocodiles and birds. Bad Behavior (February 22) Spy Creatures infiltrate the underground world of animal mischief, crime, and retribution. Spy Monkey is caught between crossfires as real monkeys fight over beach bar alcohol. Spy Egret is also a waterhole victim when elephants throw mud everywhere. Meet the Spies (March 1) The final episode explains how the concept of the spy creatures evolved at John Downer Productions from the original “bouldercam” to the “penguincams” that inspired the next-generation “spycams” featured in this series. It shows the painstaking work that goes into building the lifelike models and how the team deploys and operates the robotic cameras on location all over the world. It contains funny and unexpected moments much of which is experienced from the viewpoint of the “spycams” themselves.

his episode is not community specific. What we chose were 12 organizations/places/people we wanted to cover in southeastern Wisconsin because‌ well, because we wanted to. The Talk – Race in America

Tackles the Issue of Young People of Color and Their Uneasy Encounters With Law Enforcement

Monday, February 20, 8 p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10 The all-too-familiar conversation that black and Latino parents have with their children reveals the current state of race relations in America

The Talk – Race in America is a two-hour documentary about the increasingly common conversation taking place in homes and communities across the country between parents of color and their children, especially sons, about how to behave if they are ever stopped by the police. In many homes, “the talk,” as it is called, usually contains phrases like this: If you are stopped by the police:

Always answer “yes sir, no sir”; never talk back; don’t make any sudden movements; don’t put your hands in your pockets; obey all commands; if you think you are falsely accused, save it for the police station. I would rather pick you up at the station than the morgue… The Talk – Race in America, a multiplatform media initiative, airs Monday, February 20 at 8 p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10.

The film will present six personal stories to illustrate the issue from multiple points of view: parent, child, the police and the community. Filmed across the country, in communities including Long Beach, California; Oakland, California; St. Louis, Missouri; Richland County, South Carolina; Memphis, Tennessee; and Cleveland, Ohio, the stories will include interviews with academics, police force members, community activists and family members.

Among those profiled are activist and founder of The Ethics Project, Dr. Christi Griffin, who, after living through the traumatic events of Ferguson, created “Parent 2 Parent,” a series of conversations with black parents talking with white parents about “the talk” with their black sons; Samaria Rice, mother of Tamir Rice, who was a 12-yearold boy killed by the Cleveland police while playing with a toy gun in a local park; Reverend Catherine Brown, who was assaulted by Chicago Police in front of her children in her own car; Trevena Garel, retired sergeant, New York City Police Department (NYPD), who has investigated allegations of misconduct involving both uniformed and/or civilian members of the NYPD; Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President and retired officer, New York City 22

Police Department (NYPD); the Ramirez family, whose 28-year-old son, Oscar, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County sheriff in Paramount, California, a community southeast of Los Angeles; and members of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, who share the protocols for using lethal force and describe the danger from a police officer’s point of view.

In addition, sharing their own stories are Kenya Barris, creator/executive producer of Peabody Award-winning ABC series black-ish; Nas, musician/activist (Illmatic, Life Is Good, Untitled); Rosie Perez, actor/director, activist (Do the Right Thing, White Men Can’t Jump, Fearless, Pineapple Express); John Singleton, director/screenwriter/producer (Boyz N the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Baby Boy, Poetic Justice, Hustle and Flow); and Charles Blow, New York Times columnist. Each story is produced by a different filmmaker to ensure that diverse perspectives are presented. The project’s director and supervising producer, filmmaker Sam Pollard, an Academy Award nominee and multiple Emmy Award winner, and Academy Award nominee Julie Anderson, closely oversaw the producers and managed the overall creative look, storytelling and structure.

More than a television event, The Talk – Race in America will be accompanied by a national engagement campaign and will seek to address national concerns through local public television stations and community outreach partners. The Talk – Race in America will launch a seven-month social media conversation at #TheTalkPBS and @TheTalkPBS on Facebook and Twitter. Social media conversations will explore the topics of community policing, the power of representation in media and how to talk to children about race. Online audience members will also be invited to share their experiences of having or giving “the talk.” Visit PBS.org/thetalk for exclusive video content, special features and more. Join the conversation on social media using the hashtag #TheTalkPBS.

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE “Oklahoma City” Premieres Tuesday, February 7th 8:00 p.m. on Milwaukee PBS Channel 10 The Nation’s Deadliest Domestic Terrorist Attack and the Events That Inspired It

CONTACT

“Oklahoma City” explores the intertwined narratives of the worst domestic terrorist attack in the U.S. and the anti-government movement that inspired the actions of Timothy McVeigh, including two standoffs with law enforcement with tragic outcomes — Ruby Ridge and the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas. On April 19, 1995, McVeigh, a former soldier deeply influenced by the literature and ideas of the radical right, set off a truck bomb that destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 people and injuring 675 others. Drawing upon a rich news archive of the events, including more than 60 hours of audio from jailhouse interviews with McVeigh, “Oklahoma City” traces the events that led McVeigh to that day and recounts the stories of survivors, first responders, U.S. Marshals, FBI investigators and journalists who covered the attack. The film also provides an in-depth and provocative exploration of the extremist anti-government movement that rose to prominence in the 1990s and still makes news today. Written and directed by Barak Goodman and executive produced by Mark Samels, the film will premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival followed by a limited theatrical release. “Oklahoma City” premieres on AMERICAN EXPERIENCE on Tuesday, February 7, 8:00-10:00 p.m. Milwaukee PBS Channel 10.

“At the time of the bombing, many believed that foreign terrorists were responsible for this devastating act,” said AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Executive Producer Mark Samels. “When Timothy McVeigh was arrested it was a shock to realize that the United States had enemies within our own borders. ‘Oklahoma City’ delves into the roots of McVeigh’s anti-government beliefs and how those beliefs were shaped by events at Ruby Ridge and Waco.” “Oklahoma City” begins in the 1980s, when a small number of far-right extremist groups began to organize. These groups — notably Aryan Nations and its paramilitary spinoff, The Order — perpetrated a series of violent crimes including bank robberies, bombings and murders, alerting the FBI to a rising threat and contributing to a psychology of conspiracy and confrontation on both sides.

In the mid-1980s, Randy Weaver and his family left Iowa for a mountaintop cabin in Idaho, motivated by their religious beliefs in a coming apocalypse. There, they began attending annual summer congresses of the white-supremacist group Aryan Nations, which, unbeknownst to the Weavers, was under FBI surveillance. Identifying Weaver as a potential informant, federal law enforcement officers entrapped Weaver in an undercover sting operation. Unwilling to cooperate, and misinformed that losing at

trial would result in the forfeiture of his home, Weaver and his family retreated to their remote cabin fortified with guns and ammunition. What followed was one of the strangest standoffs in American history, leading eventually to the slaying of U.S. Marshal William Degan, as well as Weaver’s wife, Vicki, and 14-year-old son Sam.

Just six-months later, another standoff — between the FBI and the Branch Davidians, an apocalyptic Christian cult — transfixed the nation for 51 days. Following a violent raid by agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, which resulted in deaths on both sides, the heavily armed Davidians, under their charismatic leader David Koresh, hunkered down in their compound outside Waco, Texas. After weeks of fruitless negotiations, FBI tanks finally inserted tear gas into the compound, triggering the self-immolation of scores of Davidians, including approximately 18 children. Taken together, Ruby Ridge and Waco provided proof for many that the federal government was out of control and bent on disarming and subjugating the American people. One of the most ardent believers of this conspiratorial worldview was Timothy McVeigh.

Born in Pendleton, New York, McVeigh learned about guns and shooting from his grandfather. A skinny teenager, “Noodle McVeigh” was teased in high school, inspiring a lifelong hatred of bullies. Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army, and while serving in Iraq during the first Gulf War became disillusioned with both the military and the U.S. government. As a sharpshooter, he shot and killed Iraqi soldiers but felt he’d been given inadequate reason for doing so. The Iraqis “were human beings at the core and no different than me,” he said. “Then I had to reconcile that with the fact that, well, I killed them.” Summoned from Iraq by the Army to attend Ranger School, McVeigh was dismissed because he wasn’t in top physical condition. Returning to Pendleton, he had difficulty finding a job, becoming further isolated and disillusioned. He was deeply influenced by reading The Turner Diaries, a 1978 novel by neo-Nazi leader William Pierce, which depicted a violent revolution to overthrow the federal government,

including scenes of a truck bomb blowing up FBI headquarters, killing hundreds of people.

McVeigh embarked on an odyssey across the country, attending gun shows, meeting white supremacists and immersing himself in far-right literature. He showed up during the Waco standoff, and was enraged by what he viewed as a government massacre. A few months later, the passage of the Brady Bill, which mandated federal background checks and a waiting period for gun purchases, accelerated the growth of the anti-government militia movement. Galvanized, McVeigh began to put in motion his plan to “punish” the federal government by bombing the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

Woven through the narrative of McVeigh’s radicalization is the story of the immediate aftermath of the bombing itself, told though the recollections of survivors. In the minutes and hours after the explosion, first responders poured into the ruins, pulling the wounded and dead from the rubble. At the same time, investigators launched the largest manhunt in American history, involving hundreds of agents and thousands of leads. Within three days, McVeigh had been captured. “Oklahoma City” ends with the trial, conviction and execution of Timothy McVeigh. Hoping to trigger a second American Revolution against an oppressive government, McVeigh instead humanized the ordinary men and women, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, who make up the federal government.

“At its heart, ‘Oklahoma City’ is about the dangers of conspiracy thinking — of each side demonizing and exaggerating the threat posed by the other,” said director Barak Goodman. “In this way, it is an extremely timely and relevant cautionary tale for our own times.”
