A Salute to the Underwriting Support of Donovan & Jorgenson Heating and Air Conditioning Company!

F

ebruary in southeastern Wisconsin, offers an opportunity to enjoy many winter activities. With daylight hours becoming a bit longer, it’s a great time to enjoy a quiet walk in the snow, shovel the drive-way with the kids, ski one of Wisconsin’s beautiful winter trails, or enjoy one of MPTV’s award winning programs. With the heating season in full swing, we would like to recognize Donovan & Jorgenson Heating and Air Conditioning Company. They have been a long-time underwriting supporter of two award-winning and acclaimed PBS programs on MPTV – the science series Nova and the documentary natural history series Nature. Both programs have earned Emmy® and Peabody awards, and numerous other accolades. In February, Nature will feature the Lipizzaner stallions, wild orangutans of the Sumatran jungles, and the unique hunting characteristics of owls. Nova’s features in February include an episode on the unique architectural features of the Roman Colosseum, and a program on Petra, the Lost City of Stone. Nature airs each week on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. on Channel 10 and Saturday afternoons at 3 p.m. on Channel 10. It also airs on Sunday nights at 8 p.m. on Channel 36. Nova airs most Wednesday evenings at 8 p.m. and Saturday afternoons at 2 p.m. on Channel 10. Donovan & Jorgenson Heating and Air Conditioning Company, employee owned since 1985, takes pride in keeping its customers warm in winter and cool in summer, providing heating and cooling services to residents and business in southeastern Wisconsin. It is proud of its long-time commitment to both Nature and Nova on MPTV. MPTV is thankful and proud of its collaboration with Donovan & Jorgenson Heating & Cooling Company. We greatly appreciate their underwriting commitment to such perennial favorites as Nature and Nova. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV. O

ne of things that is so special about southeastern Wisconsin is the great diversity of our population – and how we celebrate it! At Milwaukee Public Television, we have featured the many ethnic groups in our area in such productions as the Emmy® Award-winning mini-series THE MAKING OF MILWAUKEE, last year’s FOLK FAIR CELEBRATION and REMEMBERING KOSCIUSZKO specials, our weekly Latino American program ADELANTE! and many more. And this month, we will spotlight two more communities: Italian Americans and African Americans. Every year, a dozen ethnic groups hold festivals on the Milwaukee lakefront or other places in town to celebrate heritage. Among the most popular is Festa Italiana, an exciting weekend of Italian American culture, history, food, and talent held in July at Henry Maier Festival Park. It is the largest Italian event of its kind in America, so it comes as no surprise that MPTV producer Maryann Lazarski chose Festa as the location for the opening scenes in her new documentary, STORIA ITALIANA: MILWAUKEE, which premieres Wednesday, February 23rd, at 8 p.m. on Channel 10. In it, Maryann shares compelling and poignant stories of proud immigrants who came to the city, as well as the community’s concerns about the next generation’s continued ties to their heritage. The public is invited to a special screening of STORIA ITALIANA: MILWAUKEE, Wednesday, February 4th, at 7 p.m. at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee. At that event you’ll also hear more about the major four-hour PBS series featured this month on our front cover, THE ITALIAN AMERICANS, Tuesdays, February 17th and 24th, at 8 p.m., which chronicles four generations of Italian American lives. February is also Black History Month, and we’re offering an impressive array of programs for the month (see p. 12) including specials about legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix,

boxer Jack Johnson, athlete Jesse Owens, comedian Richard Pryor, Libertarian commentator Walter Williams, poet August Wilson, choreographer Bill T. Jones, superstar Diana Ross, and more. Also during the month, MPTV’s BLACK NOUVEAU will feature historians talking about little known aspects of African American history, and a tribute to Black poets. One of the Black History Month specials hits particularly close to home: the new documentary VEL PHILLIPS: DREAM BIG DREAMS, premiering Monday, February 16th, at 8 p.m. on Channel 10. An attorney and Civil Rights activist, Phillips is a legend and inspiration: Milwaukee’s first African American and first female alderman; Wisconsin’s first African American judge; and Wisconsin’s first African American and first female elected Secretary of State. The Milwaukee native will turn 91 the week of our broadcast, on February 18th, and she is still going strong! VEL PHILLIPS: DREAM BIG DREAMS is a production of Wisconsin Public Television in collaboration with MPTV. Please join us throughout the month for television worth watching, made possible by your support!

F E AT U R E PBS SERIES “THE ITALIAN AMERICANS,” NARRATED BY STANLEY TUCCI AND FEATURING TONY BENNETT, DAVID CHASE, JOHN TURTURRO, CONGRESSWOMAN NANCY PELOSI, GAY TALESE AND MORE, TO AIR FEBRUARY 17th AND 24th AT 8p.m. ON CHANNEL 10.

T

HE ITALIAN AMERICANS, a new two-part, four-hour documentary series about the Italian experience in America, will premiere on Channel 10 on Tuesdays, February 17th and 24th, 8–10 p.m. The series, written and produced by John Maggio and narrated by Academy Award-nominated actor Stanley Tucci, explores the evolution of Italian Americans from the late nineteenth century to today, from “outsiders” once viewed with suspicion and mistrust to some of the most prominent leaders of business, politics and the arts today. THE ITALIAN AMERICANS reveals the unique and distinctive qualities of one immigrant group’s experience, and how these qualities, over time, have shaped and challenged America. Unlike other immigrant groups, many Italians did not come to America to stay. At the turn of the 20th century, most came to work, earn money to support their families, and eventually return home. Nearly half of the first generation Italian immigrants did return to Italy. For those that made America home, their struggle to maintain a distinct Italian culture was guided by remarkably powerful ideals of family that had always been at the center of their lives. In the Italian family, the needs of the collective came before the individual — a value system often at odds with American ideals of freedom and personal choice. While the power of the Italian family became a source of strength, it also bred suspicion, popularized in popular media as a dark, criminal element. This clash of culture echoed through generations of Italian Americans and, as they entered positions of political, social and cultural influence, it has left its mark on the American landscape. “The first waves of Italian immigrants in this country weren’t embraced very warmly by mainstream society,” said Maggio. “There were basically held at arm’s length and looked upon with a certain amount of disdain and suspicion. But eventually, the children of those first immigrants, and their children, began to gain a foothold in positions of power, and would become some of the most influential and important leaders of American life in the 20th century.” Sharon Percy Rockefeller, president and chief executive officer of WETA, said, “This series will share with public television audiences a universal aspect of the immigrant story — the struggle of a group to adapt to a new environment and become participants in American life — while also spotlighting the distinct experience and unique, engaging culture of Italian Americans.” “Our series strips away the stereotypes about Italian Americans to reveal a complicated and rich narrative, little understood by most Americans,” said Jeff Bieber, executive producer for WETA. “As we have shown in all our initiatives on immigration, American history is far more muddled and chaotic then what is typically taught in school. The more we understand our sometimes troubled past, the stronger we become as a people.”

John M. Viola, president of NIAF, said, “When our NIAF leadership team first had the opportunity to view this film, we were so thrilled to find a project that told our community’s story in an objective and engaging manner. John Maggio has created the film that I had wished to see for so many years and I believe that everyone in our community who tunes in will find something of themselves and their family in this wonderful project.” Through extensive archival materials and interviews with scholars and notable Italian Americans such as Tony Bennett, Dion DiMucci, David Chase, Gay Talese and John Turturro, who speak from personal experience, THE ITALIAN AMERICANS tells the story of those who played vital roles in shaping the relationship between Italians and mainstream American society. These include the stories of the following individuals: • Amadeo Giannini, who founded the Bank of Italy in 1904 in San Francisco to help Italians who could not secure loans or financial assistance elsewhere. He would later build it into the largest financial institution in the country and rename it Bank of America. • Arturo Giovannitti, the union activist and poet who led the Lawrence Textile Strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1912. • Rudolph Valentino, who introduced a new image of the sex symbol to movie audiences of the 1920s, yet still endured the prejudices directed at Italians of southern extraction. • Joe DiMaggio, who became one of the most celebrated baseball players of his generation, but whose parents were labeled “Enemy Aliens” during World War II. • U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi, New York Governor Mario Cuomo and Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, who each broke new ground for Italian Americans in public service. The series also presents the expertise and insights of historians, scholars, journalists and authors including Donna Gabaccia, Thomas Guglielmo, Gerald Meyer, Robert Orsi, Mary Anne Trasciatti, Lawrence DiStasi, Bruce Watson, Stephen Fox and Selwyn Raab.

MPTV & PBS CELEBRATE

BLACK HISTORY MONTH WITH NEW PROGRAMS AND A DIGITAL CAMPAIGN THAT UNITES MORE THAN A CENTURY OF HISTORY AND CULTURE PBS Black Culture Connection Website Partners with Eunique Jones Gibson to Showcase the Making of the Because of Them, We Can™ Campaign

I

n commemoration of Black History Month and as part of its year-round commitment to provide diverse programs and resources for all Americans, PBS announced new shows and online content celebrating the African American experience past, present and future. “PBS is committed to providing programming for diverse audiences all through the year, and Black History Month provides a special opportunity to shine a spotlight on the contributions of African Americans to our culture and history,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Program Executive and General Manager of General Audience Program for PBS. “We are proud to celebrate these contributions with an array of exceptional program, during Black History Month and all year long.” “Our Black History Month lineup delves deep into the stories of notable people and historical topics in a way that’s uniquely PBS,” says Donald Thoms, Vice President, Programs and Talent Management. “We feature the work of diverse and independent producers, which remains a staple of our content offerings year round, and I think our viewers will enjoy and even find a little inspiration from our programs this year.” In addition to on-air programs, the PBS Black Culture Connection (BCC), an extension of PBS.org featuring black films, stories and discussion across PBS, announces a digital partnership with the Because of Them, We Can™ campaign, which aims to educate and connect a new generation to heroes who paved the way. In an original blog series called “Behind the Lens,” hosted on PBS.org/bcc, PBS will go behind the camera of cultural architect and campaign photographer Eunique Jones Gibson, and her powerful images, to tell the rich story and history of African American icons through the eyes of our nation’s youth. During the month of February, the BCC will feature images from the Because of Them, We Can™ campaign including portraits of children inspired by Harriet Tubman, James Brown, Muhammad Ali and the Freedom Riders, along with a blog post by the photographer giving details of the subject, the shoot and the child/children who are pictured. “Behind the Lens” will be hosted on both the PBS Black Culture Connection and on becauseofthemwecan.com. 12

“I am excited and honored to share a glimpse into the making of the Because of Them, We Can™ campaign with the PBS audience,” said Eunique Jones Gibson. “Through the ‘Behind the Lens’ blog series I hope to further the campaign’s mission of building the esteem of both children and adults, while helping them reflect on a living legacy of greatness.” “Behind the Lens” will debut during Black History Month on PBS.org/bcc.

FRONTLINE: BEING MORTAL

F

RONTLINE teams up with writer and surgeon Atul Gawande to examine how doctors care for terminally ill patients. In conjunction with Gawande’s new book, Being Mortal, the film explores the relationships between doctors and patients nearing the end of life, and shows how many doctors – including Gawande himself – struggle to talk honestly and openly with their dying patients.

SHARKS: THE BIG FIVE This gripping documentary dives deep into the waters off the African coast to provide an insightful look at tigers, sand tigers, bulls, hammerheads and great whites. By laying out the facts and debunking Hollywood myths, the documentary reveals a new side of these prehistoric and oft-maligned “villains” of the sea, showing why sharks play such a vital role in their environment. 5 part series starts 2/1, 9p.m. 36HD

Tracks Ahead Storia Italiana:

By Julie Hill Lehr

By Julie Hill Lehr

Tracks Ahead returns with 13 new locally-produced episodes sure to delight the train enthusiast. This season we trek to cities such as Los Angeles, Detroit, Philadelphia, and Seattle to track down unique stories and amazing railroads. The series introduces you to interesting train folk with equally interesting train stories. Rail fans show off some incredible personal layouts in dens, basements and “garage-mahals”!

Milwaukee

Storia Italiana: Milwaukee explores Milwaukee’s Italian community and its rich 150-year-old Italian story. This one-hour, locally-produced documentary tells the story of courage, faith, family, and togetherness. It explores the hardships Milwaukee’s Italians experienced as they settled in the area and adjusted to American life. This special showcases the immigrant’s incredible journey to Milwaukee and what it took to build a new life here. This program also spotlights Milwaukee’s Italian-Immersion School and raises the question who will carry on Milwaukee’s Italian culture to the next generation and why language plays such a critical role in preserving their heritage. This one-hour documentary premieres on Channel 10 at 9 p.m. on February 23rd. While Storia Italiana: Milwaukee looks at our local Italian culture, another new documentary The Italian Americans tells a broader story of Italy’s influence in the United States. The four-part series airs in two consecutive evenings beginning on February 17th at 8 p.m. on Channel 10.

All aboard!! Tracks Ahead Season 9 is back with new locations, train stories, and interesting railroad facts.

Highlights include an episode featuring a movie train used as more than a studio prop in several Hollywood features; another episode profiling the odiferous “Skunk Train” which travels from the Pacific Ocean through the Redwood forests; and introduces you to twin brothers in San Francisco who recreate clients’ childhood memories into breathtaking layouts. Other episodes include a Cincinnati-area rail club committed to preserving train history and a look back on 25 years of Tracks Travels in Japan and Russia. Train fan Spencer Christian hosts the series airing on MPTV premiering on January 31st, at 5:30 p.m. on Channel 10. Tune in each Saturday for the next installment of Tracks Ahead.

Related programs include an episode of Nova: Colosseum-Roman Death Trap airing on February 11th at 8 p.m. on Channel 10 and Great Performances La Dolce Vita: The Music of Italian Cenema at 8 p.m. on February 27th on Channel 36.

Vel Phillips: Dream Big Dreams By Julie Hill Lehr

Civil Rights Leader Vel Phillips has made a huge difference in the social fabric of Milwaukee and Wisconsin. Phillips, born Velvalea Rodgers, in 1924 on Milwaukee’s south side seemed destined to lead. After winning a scholarship to Howard University her entire world opened. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1946 and went on to earn her law degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Vel Phillips: Dream Big Dreams explores her life and how her participation in politics, often as the first woman or African American in her position, influenced Milwaukee and Wisconsin beginning in the 1950s and continuing to this day. A true civil rights pioneer, Phillips has led a meaningful, courageous, and significant life. Watch Vel Phillips: Dream Big Dreams premiering at 8p.m. on February 16th on Channel 10. pring Green. Even the name is idyllic. There’s simply nowhere else in Wisconsin – or anywhere! – John has called “magical.” Seriously, no community just gets this lucky. How is a community of 1,200 people home to two outstanding performing arts theaters, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin and the most beautiful cave in the upper Midwest? What about the Ring Brothers? Wait until you see their work. It’s not normal (but so truly fabulous that we’re still shaking our heads in disbelief ). Nina’s Department Store can seemingly transport you back in time.

RETURN TO THE WILD THE CHRIS MCCANDLESS STORY

T

ake a fresh look at the enigmatic story of a young American hiker named Chris McCandless, the accomplished son of successful middle class parents, who was found dead in an abandoned bus in the Alaskan wilderness. McCandless’ letters, released for the first time, as well as new and surprising interviews, probe the mystery that still lies at the heart of a compelling story that has become part of the American literary canon.

STORIA ITALIANA: MILWAUKEE

S

toria Italiana: Milwaukee is a one-hour documentary that tells of Milwaukee's Italian immigrants and their families. It tells of courage and hardships as well as of the importance of faith, family and togetherness. But it also raises the critical question of who will continue this 150year-old story - one first and second generation Italians hope and pray will never end.
