t Milwaukee PBS, our story is YOU and this month’s programming shows just how powerful YOU are.
We begin the month honoring Teacher Appreciation Week May 5 with our next installment of examining the teaching profession - both the demands placed on teachers and the appreciation for jobs well done. The following week we take an unflinching look at how gun violence can change everything in the blink of an eye. A successful black business owner returns home for a high school reunion and is shot in a carjacking. Two nights later, that same shooter attempts to rob a nurse, who uses her gun to shoot her assailant, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. The assailant? A 15-year-old boy. Over the course of one weekend, three African-American families are devastated. That this happens in America with such frequency is distressing, but the real inconvenient truth for us viewers is that this story happened right here in our city. Made by filmmaker Brad Lichtenstein, a Milwaukeean, WHEN CLAUDE GOT SHOT follows all three of these lives and begs the question – can they, will they heal emotionally? Your support of us makes quality programming possible. In fact, the 2022 Milwaukee Press Club Awards have been announced and I am proud to share with you that Milwaukee PBS has won eight awards:
Speaking Of…Teachers in Crisis Milwaukee PBS brings you a one-hour special examining the nationwide teacher shortage and the stressors impacting teachers, causing them to quit or retire early. The pandemic had a huge impact on teachers, but the crisis had been building even before COVID-19. The special features discussions with teachers about their decisions to work in a classroom and the problem of finding enough teachers of color. And during Teacher Appreciation Week, we’ll thank teachers for their service and dedication. Encore broadcasts of the program will be available on air and through milwaukeepbs.org. 5/5, 7 PM 10.1

See what’s new and rewatch old favorites on MASTERPIECE: RIDLEY ROAD Summer 1962: London is swinging with new music, hip fashions, and an irresistible hedonistic spirit. It’s also seething with antisemitic violence incited by homegrown neo-Nazis. MASTERPIECE presents a riveting four-part drama set in this colorful but tumultuous time on Ridley Road, based on Jo Bloom’s acclaimed novel. Inspired by true events, Ridley Road stars newcomer Agnes O’Casey as Vivien Epstein, a young Jewish hairdresser who fits right into London’s mod scene, while secretly infiltrating the British neo-Nazi hierarchy on behalf of Jewish antifascists, Rory Kinnear as Colin Jordan, the real-life leader of Britain’s post-World War II Nazi movement, and Tom Varey as Jack, Vivien’s true love. Binge all 4 episodes the night of the premiere, May 1 ENDEAVOUR Before Inspector Morse, there was the rookie Constable Morse, fed up with police work and ready to nip his career in the bud by handing in his resignation. That is, until a murder turned up that only he could solve. Shaun Evans (The Take, The Virgin Queen) returns for a
second season as the young Endeavour Morse, before his signature red Jaguar but with his deductive powers already running in high gear. Catch up on past episodes before the new season in June.

STUDENT OPERATIONS
Milwaukee Area Technical College students enrolled in the Television and Video Production program have the opportunity to learn and work in the studios of Milwaukee PBS. Students acquire industry-standard skills for broadcast TV, cable, and corporate or commercial video. This is one of the few programs in the entire country, in which students gain direct, hands-on experience with HDTV production and broadcasting. This program showcases the work of these students. 5/7, beginning at 10 AM on 36.1 Courtesy of John Unser
