It’s been anything but quiet this summer for the producers of KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE, a recent 10THIRTYSIX™ documentary on Milwaukee PBS. Maryann Lazarski and Scottie Lee Meyers, along with co-producer Rory Linnane of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, have received sustained critical praise from across the country since the film premiered in May. Thanks to a productive partnership with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, which has published Rory’s outstanding “Kids in Crisis” articles for the past three years, the impact has been substantial. Along with ongoing steaming access through the Milwaukee PBS website, dozens of websites in the nationwide Gannett newspaper network streamed the premiere of the documentary. An educational toolkit focusing on teens and mental health issues has also been made available online at no cost, and to date more than 200 schools and non-profits across the country—as well as the Philippines—have requested DVDs of the special for use in town hall and classroom discussions. That’s a remarkable accomplishment and it underscores the value of what your generous support allows Milwaukee PBS to accomplish. If you’ve not yet seen KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE, I encourage you to watch it by heading to milwaukeepbs. org/kidsincrisis.

Over the past three years, Milwaukee PBS has produced a series of specials focused on topics useful to viewers in the 50+ age group. NEXT AVENUE CONVERSATIONS have proven to be enormously popular with Milwaukee PBS viewers, on-air and online. We’ve met many of the station’s wonderful members at taping events for the series. This year, the show’s final season, John McGivern has served as the host and has again shown his compassion and understanding of Milwaukee PBS viewers. We appreciate John’s participation. Lastly, we are especially grateful to the generous funders who have made the NEXT AVENUE CONVERSATIONS series possible, The Helen Daniel Bader Fund and Bader Philanthropies, and offer a special thank you to Helen Ramon for her unwavering belief in Milwaukee PBS. As always, you are invited to watch episodes of the series at milwaukeepbs.org/ next-avenue.

Thank you. Sincerely,

General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

On the Local Scene 10THIRTYSIX™ revisits Sherman Park, three years after a night of unrest brought to light many of Milwaukee’s social issues. The show reconnects with community members who led the effort to heal the community and find out what they're now doing to continue making a difference. Plus, take a look at CampHERO, a week-long camp for girls to partner with police officers and firefighters to explore different areas of protective services, as future career options. We meet some participants at MATC's Oak Creek campus and tag along for lessons and activities. Airs Thursday, August 15th at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 10. ADELANTE highlights Hispanic films and attends the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's film festival, where the documentaries of Cuban filmmaker, Eric Corvalan, are featured. We attend the third year of Marcus Theatre's "CineLatino Festival” and sit down with the president and CEO of Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee, and a senior researcher at the Wisconsin Policy Forum to discuss a study on the Hispanic workforce in metro Milwaukee. Airs Thursday, August 8th at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 10. BLACK NOUVEAU explores the return of tennis to Sherman Park and celebrates the new EP release of SistaStrings, Milwaukee-based musicians who are using their gifts of music to create social change. Airs Thursday, August 8th at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 10. THE ARTS PAGE offers an all-local look at art this month. As the Milwaukee Ballet celebrates its 50th anniversary, artistic director Michael Pink and Jayne Pink share their vision for the company. Artist Janet Tombros spills the secrets behind 3D chalk art at the Museum of Wisconsin Art's Art & Chalk Fest, and local powerhouse trio the WhiskeyBelles make a country, folk and Americana sound that gets your toes tapping. Airs Thursday, August 22nd at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 10. AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN™ features highlights from the third season, when John and the crew explored the dynamic communities of Sheboygan Falls and Kohler, Milwaukee’s Mitchell Street, Cudahy and Wausau. Airs Thursdays at 9:00 p.m. on Channel 10. COOK. PLATE. DINE. ™ presents the finale, where the student chefs enter the final phase of training before they cook in the real world. The students gear up for final exams and see if they can handle the pressure in the kitchen. Finally, as the students walk across the stage at graduation, they and the MATC Culinary Arts program alumni reflect back on their experiences in the program. Starts August 1st at 9:30 p.m. on Channel 10. OUTDOOR WISCONSIN takes a look back at the 34th season with a visit to an artisan blacksmith in Vernon County, fun on Lake Michigan at the Milwaukee Community Sailing Center, logrolling lessons on Lake Wingra, and geocaching in Marathon County. Airs Thursdays at 9:00 p.m. on Channel 10. NEXT AVENUE COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS travels to Sheboygan Falls, where host John McGivern and local experts discuss the many benefits of staying fit and active later in life, including social and emotional benefits, not just physical. Airs Thursday, August 15th at 7:00 p.m. on Channel 10. KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE is a powerful 10THIRTYSIX™ one-hour special, produced in partnership with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel/USA Today Network - Wisconsin. The program begins with a gripping and inspiring half-hour documentary about four local young people and their experiences with mental illness and suicide. The second half of the program features interactive discussions with mental health professionals and others who have experienced the effects of mental health issues.

THE PLANETS: SATURN

Over the past 40 years, a handful of space probes have given us glimpses of this gas giant. But it was NASA’s Cassini, which toured Saturn’s realm for 13 years, that delivered the most astounding new insights. Saturn’s icy rings— about 45,000 miles wide and only 30 feet thick—turn out to be younger than the dinosaurs, raising questions about their origins. 8/7, 8p.m. 10HD 7

Premieres Tuesday, August 6, at 8p.m. on Channel 10 Award-winning Filmmaker Barak Goodman Revisits the 1969 Event on 50th Anniversary

A ugust 1969, nearly half a million young people from all walks of life journeyed from every corner

of the country to a dairy farm in upstate New York for a concert unprecedented in scope and influence. WOODSTOCK examines the tumultuous decade that led to those three historic days — years that saw the nation deeply divided by Vietnam and racial, generational and sexual politics — through the voices of those who were present for the event that would become the defining moment of the counterculture revolution. In conjunction with the 50th anniversary, WOODSTOCK: Three Days That Defined a Generation, directed by Barak Goodman, written by Goodman and Don Kleszy, and produced by Goodman and Jamila Ephron, premieres Tuesday, August 6, 8:00-10:00 p.m. on Milwaukee PBS channel 10, pbs.org and the PBS Video App. “For three days in August, 1969, the values of ‘peace and love,’ loudly championed by the counterculture movement, were actually put to the test in the miserable conditions at Woodstock,” said director Barak Goodman. “The more than 400,000 people who attended the festival proved that they were more than just words. For a surprising number of people, that brief encounter with sacrifice, cooperation and generosity changed their lives. I think Woodstock continues to inspire because the grace demonstrated there was real and enduring.”

8

“Unlike Michael Wadleigh’s classic 1970 documentary, our film turns the cameras around, into the audience,”

said AMERICAN EXPERIENCE executive producer Mark Samels. “By focusing on individuals — from concert goers to security guards to performers to local residents — WOODSTOCK expands our understanding of the event as not only an unparalleled musical milestone, but a once-in-a-century cultural phenomena that served as a coda to the sixties and a harbinger of the decades to come.” Interviewees include festival producers and staff including Donald Goldmacher, Carol Green, Michael Lang, John Morris, John Roberts and Joel Rosenman; activist Wavy Gravy; festival attendees and others.

SEE WHAT IS NEW THIS MONTH THE CHAPERONE on MASTERPIECE

Louise Brooks, the 1920s silver screen sensation who never met a rule she didn’t break, epitomized the restless, reckless spirit of the Jazz Age. But, just a few years earlier, she was a 15 year-old student in Wichita, Kansas for whom fame and fortune were only dreams. When the opportunity arises for her to go to New York to study with a leading dance troupe, her mother (Victoria Hill) insists there be a chaperone. Norma Carlisle (Elizabeth McGovern, DOWNTON ABBEY), a local society matron who never broke a rule in her life, impulsively volunteers to accompany Louise (Haley Lu Richardson) to New York for the summer. Why does this utterly conventional woman do this? What happens to her when she lands in Manhattan with an unusually rebellious teenager as her ward? And, which of the two women is stronger, the uptight wife-and-mother or the irrepressible free spirit? It’s a story full of surprises—about who these women really are, and who they eventually become. Based on Laura Moriarty’s beloved New York Times best-selling novel, MASTERPIECE FILMS’ first theatrical release THE CHAPERONE reunites the writer (Academy Award®-winner Julian Fellowes), director (Michael Engler) and star (Academy Award® nominee Elizabeth McGovern) of DOWNTON ABBEY for an immersive and richly emotional period piece. The film also stars Campbell Scott, Géza Röhrig, Elizabeth McGovern, Robert Fairchild and Blythe Danner. PBS Passport members can stream the film ahead of its November 24, 2019 broadcast premiere. Available August 10th

Local children from communities throughout southeastern Wisconsin drew on their boundless imaginations to create unforgettable characters, exciting plots and expressive illustrations. Over 229 children submitted their works of literature in the Milwaukee PBS KIDS Young Writers Contest and of those, 18 children received an award. The Milwaukee PBS KIDS Young Writers Contest is designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on, active learning. The contest encourages children in grades K-3 to celebrate creativity by submitting their own original stories and illustrations. 2019 marked the 25th consecutive year of the contest. At an awards ceremony held in June, Darlyne Haertlein, former contest organizer and Debra Kunath, 2019 contest coordinator, were honored for their outstanding work in encouraging and promoting children's literacy and creativity. A deadly recipe threatens the survival of countless creatures throughout Earth’s oceans. With carbon emissions sharply rising, the silent killer is entering the seas at a staggering rate — raising the oceans’ acidity. As a result, the skeletons and shells of marine creatures that form the foundation of the web of life are dissolving. 8/28, 8p.m. 10HD 23

C hildren in southeastern Wisconsin enjoy engaging, quality children’s programming Monday through Friday on Channel 10.1 because of the vision and commitment of the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation. Their generous gift is one of

the primary sources of funding for our award-winning educational children’s programming on Milwaukee PBS. Jane Bradley Pettit was committed throughout her lifetime to improving the lives of children from all socio-economic walks of life. These children’s literacy programs are created specifically to help bridge children’s literacy skills in reading, language development, math and science and model positive social skills such as empathy, generosity and courtesy. In July, PBS introduced a new series, MOLLY OF DENALI, for kids ages 4-8. Molly is an indigenous Alaskan girl, who solves problems with the aid of online resources, field guides, maps, historical documents and others, while respecting the knowledge of her native peoples. Milwaukee PBS is thankful for the underwriting support of the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation to children’s literacy programming on Milwaukee PBS. According to Vice President JoAnn Culp Youngman of the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation, “Jane Bradley Pettit knew the importance of reaching out to children, not only to expand their knowledge, but to foster their hopes and dreams in life. The love of reading enriches the lives of children. Milwaukee PBS programming provides an opportunity to increase children’s literacy by stimulating their imagination through education and entertainment. The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation is pleased to continue the legacy that Mrs. Pettit began over 20 years ago.”
