MASTERPIECE: SANDITON

Letter from

Bohdan Zachary In the weeks leading up to the New Year, everyone at Milwaukee PBS took some time to reflect on 2019’s many accomplishments on-air, online and in the community. The wide recognition and positive impact Milwaukee PBS’ local productions had in our diverse community is truly energizing as work begins on several substantive projects for 2020. One such example from the past year is KIDS IN CRISIS: YOU’RE NOT ALONE, a documentary based on the multiyear newspaper series by USA Today-Wisconsin reporter Rory Linnane. The film presents an honest, unflinching look at teens and mental health challenges. (You can stream it now at milwaukeepbs.org/kidsincrisis). Milwaukee PBS’ local productions: ADELANTE!; BLACK NOUVEAU; THE ARTS PAGE; OUTDOOR WISCONSIN; AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN™; and 10THIRTYSIX™ continued to introduce neighbors to other neighbors in our community. All of this programming is made possible through your financial support, for which I remain deeply grateful. Your continued support is also paving the way for a few once-ina-lifetime events Milwaukee PBS will feature in 2020. The Democratic National Convention will take place July 1316 just down the street from our location on the downtown campus of Milwaukee Area Technical College. We’re delighted the reporters and producers of the PBS NewsHour team will call our location ‘home’ during the convention coverage. WASHINGTON WEEK, hosted by Robert Costa, will also tape in Milwaukee on Friday, July 10.

In mid-October, Milwaukee PBS will partner with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra for a live broadcast of the opening subscription weekend performance of the MSO in its new home, the magnificent, newly restored Warner Grand Theater on Wisconsin Avenue. We’re honored and excited to bring this very special event to viewers in our community. You’ll hear much more about this special event in the coming months. Again, thank you for the generous support that makes these exciting opportunities possible. And with all we undertake, Milwaukee PBS is thankful for the support of the board of directors of Milwaukee Area Technical College. MATC not only holds the licenses for WMVS and WMVT, but in fact launched the channels in 1957 (WMVS/Channel 10) and 1963 (WMVT/Channel 36). We are proud to be part of MATC, one of the country’s educational leaders. Dr. Vicki Martin is the 10th president of Milwaukee Area Technical College and is also an ardent viewer and supporter of Milwaukee PBS. I’m delighted to welcome her to the pages of Fine Tuning. See Dr. Martin's letter on page 14. Sincerely,

General Manager, Milwaukee PBS

Jane Austen’s Final Unfinished Work—Finished! Scripted by Emmy® Award Winner Andrew Davies

Premiering on MASTERPIECE on Milwaukee PBS January 12

Jane Austen was chronically ill with a mysterious disease in early 1817, when she turned her thoughts to a happier subject. She started work on a witty and delightful novel set in a seaside town. She never finished it. Now, noted screenwriter Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Les Misérables, Primetime Emmy® winner for Little Dorrit) picks up Austen’splot and takes it in a glorious and satisfying direction, on Sanditon. Produced by Red Planet Pictures, the eight-hour series will premiere on MASTERPIECE on Milwaukee PBS Sunday, January 12, at 8p.m. MASTERPIECE’s bold and lavish adaptation of Jane Austen’s final work stars Rose Williams (Curfew) as Austen’s lively but levelheaded heroine, Charlotte Heywood; Theo James (Divergent) as the humorous, charming (and slightly wild!) Sidney Parker; Anne Reid (Years and Years) as the forthright grande dame of Sanditon, Lady Denham; Kris Marshall (Love Actually) as Sanditon’s compulsively enterprising promoter, Tom Parker; and Crystal Clarke (Ordeal by Innocence) as the mysterious West Indian heiress, Miss Lambe. Also appearing are Kate Ashfield (Secrets and Lies) as Tom’s stalwart spouse, Mary; Jack Fox (Riviera) as the fortune hunter Sir Edward Denham; Charlotte Spencer (Watership Down) as Sir Edward’s scheming sister, Esther; and Lily Sacofsky (Bancroft) as the enigmatic and elegant Clara Brereton. With four acclaimed Austen adaptations to his credit (Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey and Emma), plus the Pride and Prejudice modernization Bridget Jones’s Diary, Andrew Davies is no stranger to Jane Austen’s story strategies— which makes him the perfect candidate to channel the creative spirit of one of the world’s most amusing and penetrating novelists.

The storyline, as Austen left it in 11 beautifully crafted chapters, is as follows: Tom Parker (Marshall) is obsessed with turning the sleepy seaside village of Sanditon into a fashionable health resort, and he enlists the backing of local bigwig Lady Denham (Reid). Through a mishap, Tom makes the acquaintance of the Heywoods and invites their eldest daughter, Charlotte (Williams), for an extended stay at Sanditon.

There, the sensible Charlotte observes hypochondria, avarice and attempted seduction run amok. Lady Denham, a widow, is playing matchmaker for her destitute nephew, Sir Edward (Fox), who is determined to seduce Lady Denham’s ward, Clara (Sacofsky). The arrival of wealthy, mixed-race heiress Miss Lambe (Clarke), under the protection of Tom’s upright brother Sidney (James), adds an interesting complication. Eligible men naturally find Miss Lambe fascinating, while Charlotte is intrigued by Sidney. With many promising loose ends and romantic possibilities, how will the young people pair off? Who will Lady Denham designate as her heir? Will Tom’s tourist spa finally catch on with the public? Where will that lead? Andrew Davies imaginatively enters this world of Georgian-era suitors, hustlers, and health cranks and boldly tells us what happens next. Remarkably, even as Jane Austen was succumbing to the ravages of her fatal illness, she chose to lampoon the contemporary fad for tonics, sea water cures, and other medical remedies. Undiagnosed at the time, her malady was probably Addison’s disease, which today is easily treatable. She might have had many years of writing ahead of her, but Jane Austen died at age 41 on July 18, 1817.

Letter from

Vicki Martin Dear Milwaukee PBS Members: Regular viewers of Channels 10 and 36 are probably accustomed to hearing the phrase “A viewer-supported service of MATC.” The next time you hear it, I hope you will pause to think about the connection between Milwaukee Area Technical College and Milwaukee PBS – beyond the fact that the MATC District Board holds the stations’ licenses. Common to both is a commitment to excellence and serving our community. Noncommercial broadcasting and technical colleges are both “open access” by design – offering services to the widest possible audience across a variety of age groups to help them improve their lives. While more fee-based streaming services grow and student debt hits record highs, Milwaukee PBS still provides free digital content and MATC offers a high-quality education with low tuition cost. Of equal importance, both the college and Milwaukee PBS continually adapt to the needs of the community we share. For example, Milwaukee PBS continues to bring its national award-winning storytelling to the airwaves while connecting to new audiences through innovative digital formats. MATC’s first-in-the-state Promise program opens access to college for students who never thought it was an option. Since it launched in 2015, MATC has served more than 1,400 students through the Promise for New High School Graduates and the Promise for Adults. The college also is evolving through new Academic and Career Pathways based on a nationally recognized model to help more students succeed in college, graduate and go on to a career, a four-year degree or both. By fall 2020, all students will be served through this model, which helps students find the right program for them, get a successful start, stay on track and learn. Thank you for your ongoing support. Your membership to Milwaukee PBS facilitates access to high-quality storytelling in both traditional formats and in ever-evolving digital ones. I hope you enjoy this edition of Fine Tuning. Sincerely, Vicki J. Martin, Ph.D. President Milwaukee Area Technical College

PBS’s new 10-episode series EXPEDITION WITH STEVE BACKSHALL reveals there are still parts of our planet yet to be discovered. Explorer and naturalist Steve Backshall pursues incredible journeys and world firsts — unclimbed peaks, unexplored cave systems and uncharted landscapes — setting foot where no human has been before. As the preeminent destination for engaging, enlightening and entertaining science and natural history programming, PBS continues to deliver with this series. EXPEDITION WITH STEVE BACKSHALL premieres on Wednesday, January 15, 9 p.m. on Milwaukee PBS. “In EXPEDITION WITH STEVE BACKSHALL, PBS gives a glimpse into some of the incredible parts of the world that have yet to be explored,” said Bill Margol, Senior Director, General Audience Programming & Development for PBS. “The world is full of surprising discoveries and journeys to be made,

and we hope to spark viewers’ curiosity and ignite their spirit of adventure.” In this global series, adventurer and naturalist Steve Backshall ventures into undiscovered territory, endures extreme physical challenges, encounters extraordinary wildlife and teams up with remarkable people along the way. From free-diving in underground river systems and descending deep into the caves of the Maya underworld, to kayaking Himalayan whitewater and scaling unclimbed Arctic peaks, these expeditions push Backshall and his expert crew to the limit. “There are still countless expeditions to be conquered and world discoveries to be made, and I am honored to have had the ability to be among the first to set foot in these incredible places,” said Steve Backshall, host. “It is thrilling to not know what you will find next. That’s what exploration is all about.”

MILWAUKEE PBS A few months ago, we shared some pictures and highlights from the magnificent trip to England some Milwaukee PBS viewers took last summer (a trip that will happen again this summer!). Last fall, viewers also had the opportunity to take a few trips closer to home on the 2019 AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN™ and Smoky Mountain Christmas bus trips. THE AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN MCGIVERN™ group traveled to southwestern Wisconsin to explore some of the spots John himself visited on episodes of his show. A stop in Janesville offered an additional treat—the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes and watch part of an episode from the upcoming season be filmed, plus a special meet-andgreet dinner and private performance from John McGivern, himself! The Smoky Mountain Christmas tour followed up on some of the rich musical history explored in the recent Ken Burns documentary, COUNTRY MUSIC, and also captivated fans of DOWNTON ABBEY with a visit to the magnificent Biltmore Estate, which included experiencing Downton Abbey: The Exhibition, featuring costumes and actual reconstructed sets from the series. Pictures from each trip can be found at flickr.com/photos/milwaukeepbs.

ATTENTION ALL STORYTELLERS KINDERGARTEN THROUGH GRADE 3 Milwaukee PBS KIDS Writers Contest Starts in January!

Milwaukee PBS KIDS Writers Contest has encouraged young authors and illustrators to write original stories for more than two decades. The writing and illustrating contest is for kindergarten through grade 3 and is designed to activate children’s imaginations while they practice their literacy and illustrating skills. To help get children started on their storytelling, Milwaukee PBS offers FREE activity sessions called “Storytelling 101.” These workshops are available throughout January and February. For details please visit milwaukeepbs.org/learn. This year, Milwaukee PBS is trying something new- a writer’s club. We invite children in kindergarten through third grade and their parents to join Milwaukee PBS and the Wauwatosa Public Library Writer’s Club. During the four-week project, children will learn how to write and illustrate their own story. Seating is limited, so be sure to reserve your spot today at milwaukeepbs.org/learn. The contest begins January 1, 2020. Entries must be received by Friday, March 20 at 5 p.m. at Milwaukee PBS. For full contest rules, entry forms and guidelines, visit milwaukeepbs.org/learn. Many thanks to our generous prize donors - the Kiwanis Club of Greater Milwaukee and the Betty Brinn Children’s Museum.

e would like to recognize The Jerome J. & Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation for its long-time underwriting support of Milwaukee PBS. The Foundation currently underwrites ANTIQUES ROADSHOW on Monday and Saturday evenings and DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD, daytimes Monday through Friday on Channel 10. For many years, the Foundation has sponsored such diverse programming as THE LAWRENCE WELK SHOW, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, and the children’s programs CLIFFORD THE BIG RED DOG and ARTHUR. The Jerome J. & Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation was established by Jerry and Dorothy Holz in 1996. Jerry’s father opened Holz Motors in 1914 in Hales Corners and Jerry, growing up in an apartment over the family’s dealership downstairs, grew up immersed in every aspect of the auto business. Holz Motors has received numerous awards over the years. Jerry Holz passed away in 2017. He and his late wife Dorothy valued giving back to Hales Corners and the Greater Milwaukee community. "My grandmother Dorothy loved children, and underwriting DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD reflects her early vision for the Foundation to brighten the lives of kids in southeastern Wisconsin,” shared President J. J. Weis, about why the Foundation supports programming on Milwaukee PBS. “Both of my grandparents were also proud of their families’ history and heritage. ANTIQUES ROADSHOW highlights their love of family treasures and stories." Milwaukee PBS is thankful for its collaboration with the Jerome J. and Dorothy H. Holz Family Foundation and its ongoing support of ANTIQUES ROADSHOW and DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD. Mimi Notestein Director, Foundation Relations 26
