T
his month we would like to recognize Hydrite Chemical Co., a longtime generous and visionary supporter of a variety of programs on MPTV. Annually, Hydrite Chemical Co. underwrites PBS’s highly regarded Nature a program that focuses on wildlife and the natural environment. In addition, Hydrite Chemical Co. underwrites the science and nature specials: Particle Fever, seen on MPTV this past January, PBS’s three-part series, The Great Race, and the BBC production, Forces of Nature, both of which will air later this fall. In 2015, Hydrite Chemical Co. was one of the underwriters of the documentary presented by Ken Burns, Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies. Also in 2015, Hydrite Chemical Co. was the local underwriter of two science programs, The Mystery of Matter: Search for the Elements and Uranium, programs which look at how its discovery changed science, medicine, and the nature of war. Hydrite Chemical Co. has been a supporter of numerous patriotic programs on MPTV for years, including this year’s National Memorial Day Concert and A Capitol Fourth, the annual Independence Day Concert celebration extravaganza. Other patriotic programs Hydrite Chemical Co. sponsored earlier this spring included Heroes on Deck: World War II on Lake Michigan, the UW Band Show 2016, and Ted Talks War & Peace, to name a few. According to Mike Honkamp, Secretary and Treasurer at Hydrite, “Hydrite Chemical is proud to support Milwaukee Public Television. MPTV’s programs are not only educational but also entertaining and appeal to both young and old. We are very fortunate to have an organization like MPTV that is so dedicated to our community.” Hydrite Chemical Co. was established in Milwaukee in 1929 to support chemical production essential in the leather processing industry for the tanning factories of Milwaukee. Over 80 years, Hydrite Chemical Co. has grown to be a leader in chemical manufacturing and distribution as a partner to hundreds of companies across North America. It offers expertise in chemical distribution, food and dairy sanitation, organic processing, water treatment, foam control and compliance management. MPTV is very appreciative of the most generous support of Hydrite Chemical Co. to MPTV and to all of our fine programming. More information about Hydrite Chemical Co. is available at www.hydrite.com See Page 30 for Advertising and Underwriting contact information.

y first six months in Milwaukee have proven to be the most exciting time in my professional career. I have quickly fallen in love with southeastern Wisconsin and look forward to exploring more of the state in coming months. I'm ecstatic about the staff I get to work with at MPTV and I am equally thankful to the leaders of Milwaukee Area Technical College who believe in the value of Milwaukee Public Television. The work that MPTV undertakes on a daily basis continues to deepen my lifelong passion for public media. The programs and initiatives MPTV has set forth reflect the communities of not only southeastern Wisconsin but the rest of the country as well. Our current and future plans (which I'll soon be telling you more about in coming months) are made possible by your ongoing financial support. For that I can't thank you enough. Even though I really enjoy attending every MPTV event, I know there are thousands of you I have yet to meet. Slowly but surely, I'm determined to say hello to more of you in person. But in the meantime I'd really like to have your opinion of what we do. That's why we have sent out a member survey recently. Please take a few minutes to respond to the series of questions
you may have received. The member survey is the quickest way to canvass our viewers, which will help us shape our future plans. I hope to meet more of you in person at this summer's numerous cultural and music events. Rain and shine, I am planning on attending as many of Milwaukee's get-togethers as I can fit into my calendar. Look for me in my MPTV T-shirt and say hello. Thank you for your time and for being a member of Milwaukee Public Television. I'm open to your comments and ideas. Feel free to email me at mptvgm@matc.edu. Thank you.

CAROL BURNETT’S FAVORITE SKETCHES Premieres Friday, June 3, on Channel 10
J
oin beloved funny lady Carol Burnett as she presents her own personally selected favorite moments from her long-running variety series The Carol Burnett Show. Laugh along with Carol and her hilarious troupe of regulars — Harvey Korman, Tim Conway, Vicki Lawrence and Lyle Waggoner — and special guests Steve Martin and Betty White. Several of the sketches Carol selected include footage from the first five years of the series, which have never been re-aired. CAROL BURNETT’S FAVORITE SKETCHES premieres Friday, June 3, at 8:00 p.m. on Channel 10. For over a decade, Americans would gather round their TV sets to watch The Carol Burnett Show. From 1967 to 1978, the prime-time comedy-variety series won 25 Emmy Awards, and showcased the wonderful wacky brand of comedy that was uniquely Carol’s own. Carol’s favorite sketches include some of her unforgettable characters — Starlet O’Hara, Norma Desmond, Mrs. Wiggins, and of course, Eunice, long suffering wife of Ed and daughter of Mama, as well as Tim Conway’s “The Oldest Man” and Mr. Tudball. CAROL BURNETT’S FAVORITE SKETCHES features these performances: • “As the Stomach Turns: Close Encounters” The soap opera parody pokes fun at the alien visitation classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind with guests Steve Martin and Betty White. • “The Dentist” The famous sketch with Harvey Korman as the very first patient of nervous dentist Tim Conway, who just got out of dental school and accidentally injects himself with Novocain.
4
• “Went With the Wind” Ranking as of the greatest sight gags in TV history: Starlet O’Hara (Carol) appears in a dress made from curtains in this famous Gone With The Wind parody. • “Nora Desmond: The Commercial” Carol satirizes Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard as an actress looking for a career via a Knock ’Em Dead bug spray commercial. • “The Oldest Man: Galley Slaves” Slave ship taskmaster (Lyle Waggoner) assigns a rowing partner in the form of “The Oldest Man” (Tim Conway) for one of his men (Harvey Korman). • “The Family – Sorry!” Eunice, Ed and Mama sit down for a nice little game of Sorry! and things get ugly fast, causing Mama to lay into Eunice with the put-down “You got splinters in the windmills of your mind.” • “Tudball and Wiggins” Mr. Tudball and his secretary Mrs. Wiggins are up to their old shenanigans trying to implement a fire safety program. • “As the Stomach Turns: Mother Marcus” A hilarious visit from Canoga Falls’ most notorious snoop. PBS special programming invites viewers to experience the worlds of science, history, nature and public affairs; hear diverse viewpoints; and take front-row seats to world-class drama and performances. Viewer contributions are an important source of funding, making PBS programs possible. PBS and public television stations offer all Americans from every walk of life the opportunity to explore new ideas and new worlds through television and online content.

Star-Studded Joan Baez 75th Birthday Celebration
Coming to Great Performances on June 5th at 6:30p.m. on Channel 10 David Bromberg, Jackson Browne, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Judy Collins, David Crosby, Emmylou Harris, Indigo Girls, Damien Rice, Paul Simon, Mavis Staples, Nano Stern, & Richard Thompson join Baez in duets.
J
oan Baez celebrated her 75th birthday on Saturday, January 27 at New York’s historic Beacon Theatre. The special event honored her legendary 50 plus years in music with an intimate, careerspanning live performance. Baez performed alongside a remarkable array of superstar artists including: David Bromberg, Jackson Browne, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Judy Collins, David Crosby, Emmylou Harris, Indigo Girls, Damien Rice, Paul Simon, Mavis Staples, Nano Stern, and Richard Thompson. The special Joan Baez 75th Birthday Celebration will premiere on Great Performances in Milwaukee on Sunday June 5th, at 6:30p.m. on Channel 10. Prior to the gala celebratory event, Mary Chapin Carpenter had observed, "She has been a mentor, an inspiration and a role model for anyone who ever picked up a guitar and wanted to believe they could do more than just sing pretty songs. She has showed multiple generations that music can move and inspire as well as be a force for courage, solidarity, fellowship and justice. To be able to celebrate her 75th birthday with her in New York City is a dream evening, and I think I will feel 17 again for much of it.” Indeed, their duet of “Catch the Wind” – movingly dedicated to Baez’s late sister Mimi – is a highpoint. But all the duets reveal a strong mutual affection between Baez and her guests, close friends as much as professional colleagues. Hugs and kisses are much in evidence. Despite the vastness of the ornate Beacon Theatre, a former movie palace from the 1920s, the concert is captured in intimate closeups, and Baez intersperses her vocals with off-the-cuff reminiscences such as how she was once tasked with waking an exhausted Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The awards for Baez’s activism and career continue unabated. Last year, she was presented with Amnesty International’s “Ambassador of Conscience Award” at a ceremony in Berlin. The award is the organization’s top honor and recognizes those who have shown exceptional leadership in the fight for human rights through their life and work. Baez was further honored recently when her breakthrough 1960 debut album, was selected by the Library of Congress as one of its 25 annual recordings to be preserved in the National Recording Registry. The Library of Congress stated that the album “preserves for posterity powerful performances from the Harvard Square coffeehouse repertoire that brought Baez to prominence as the folk-revival movement was arriving on the national stage.”

Thank you to all 34,000 of you who are members of
Milwaukee Public Television. You have been an important part of the growth in community support for the station, which we are so grateful for.
As part of our ongoing growth, this month’s On-Air Membership Drive has a goal to inspire more viewers who have never supported Milwaukee Public Television to join our growing community. We also hope to have you, our current members, reaffirm your commitment to MPTV with your renewal or an additional gift. Tune in for this month’s campaign on-air as we try something new and exciting! Instead of the 9 days we’d originally planned for on-air fundraising, we’ve reduced it to 4. But, we haven’t reduced our anticipated revenue goal. In half the days, we aim to raise the same amount of funds for national and local productions you and other viewers look forward to year-round.

Rhythm and Blues 40: A Soul Spectacular Stronger Bones, Longer Life Timeless Tractors: The Collectors By condensing fundraising to weekends only, we will retain traditionally scheduled programming in place Monday – Friday in their normal day and time slots. Throughout the week, while you are tuned in to your favorite program whether that be: Antiques Roadshow, Nova, Nature, or our local program block on Thursday nights, you may see a quick reminder to join or renew your membership. Please take advantage of these opportunities to fund your favorites and make a donation. Together, we can raise the same funds in half the time this month! We hope that this new balance between new and popular fundraising programs and retaining your favorite shows at their traditional times will be a win-win for you and Milwaukee Public Television. If you would like to leave a comment on the new format, you can email us at mptvsupport@matc.edu.
