s 2016 begins, we would like to wish our MPTV viewers a happy, healthy, and fulfilling year. We are looking forward to offering our viewers another season of exciting, entertaining, and informative programs. After the frenetic pace of the holidays, January is a great time to cuddle up on the couch or by a warm fire to watch one of MPTV’s award-winning programs. Our MPTV viewers are on the edge of their seats, eagerly awaiting the start of Masterpiece’s Downton Abbey, Season 6, premiering on Sunday, January 3, at 8 p.m. on Channel 10. Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin have been a proud local sponsor of Downton Abbey since January, 2013, making it possible for MPTV to offer this beautifully crafted British BBC production to our viewers. In addition, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin underwrites the acclaimed national science series Nova on MPTV. Beginning this month, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin will also be the local underwriter of a new PBS drama series, Mercy Street, about two volunteer nurses on opposing sides of the Civil War. Mercy Street premieres Sunday, January 17, at 9 p.m. on Channel 10, following Downton Abbey. The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin regional health network is a partnership between Froedtert Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin. It comprises eastern Wisconsin’s only academic medical center, Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee; Community Memorial Hospital, Menomonee Falls; and St. Joseph’s Hospital, West Bend. The health network also includes more than 2,000 physicians, across 25 primary and specialty care health centers and clinics. It is the only health system in the region that includes an academic-community partnership. The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network offers exceptional care in the community and streamlined, coordinated access to specialty expertise, clinical trials and the full range of tertiary care capabilities of eastern Wisconsin’s only academic medical center, when the need for more complex treatment arises. “We touch people’s lives every day, whether it’s caring for a patient in the Froedtert & Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center on our academic medical center campus or a new mom at a neighborhood clinic in Brookfield,” says Kathleen Perlewitz, Vice President, Marketing and Communications at Froedtert Health. “We’re always focused on doing what’s best for that individual person. I think MPTV sees its responsibility to viewers in a very similar way, and its reputation for integrity and accuracy align strongly with our own values.” MPTV is thankful and proud of its collaboration with Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin. We greatly appreciate their underwriting commitment to outstanding programs such as Downton Abbey, Nova, and Mercy Street. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV. Contact Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu or (414) 297-8008.

ello. My name is Bohdan Zachary. I’m honored to have been selected to serve as Milwaukee Public Television’s seventh general manager. I promise to uphold and build upon MPTV’s rich 58 year mission to educate, entertain and inspire viewers in the Southeastern Wisconsin region. I arrived at MPTV in large measure because public television and PBS shaped and influenced my life.
10&36 DAYTIME

I’m the son of Ukrainian immigrants who survived Nazi slave labor camps and emigrated to America where they began new lives. My parents and grandparents arrived penniless, unable to speak English but filled with hopes for a better future. When they settled in Hamtrack (a city within Detroit that had a predominantly Polish and Ukrainian population) my parents and my grandparents faced many challenges - both cultural and financial. They had but a grasp of a few rudimentary English phrases, but all that began to change the night Dad and grandfather set an enormous television cabinet into the living room. We quickly discovered public television and it became our favorite station.
throughout its 58 year history. And with your continued financial support, we will be able to do even more over the coming years.
Public television introduced us to a world of music, arts and culture we could not have afforded otherwise. Because of the programs we watched as a family, I gained a strong command of the English language by the time I entered kindergarten. Sometimes what I saw on educational television got me a little too excited. Mom would forever remind me that after we watched a documentary about Michelangelo’s work in the Sistine Chapel, I marked up the walls of the basement in my family’s home using black shoe polish. My parents were aghast at what I’d done. I couldn’t understand why they were upset. After all, I said, I was creating a home version of the Sistine Chapel, just like Michelangelo did on that PBS documentary!
In recent weeks I’ve enjoyed meeting many MPTV members at some of our local events. And over the coming months, I hope to meet many more of you and tell you why Milwaukee Public Television is deserving of your financial support. If you’ve not given recently, please consider making a tax-deductible contribution right now.
My story is not unique. Milwaukee Public Television has bettered the lives and minds of tens of thousands of viewers

One of the things that struck me when I arrived here is MPTV’s focus on local issues. The station’s lineup of outstanding local series includes: Around the Corner with John McGivern; ¡Adelante!; Outdoor Wisconsin; interCHANGE; I Remember; Black Nouveau; and The Arts Page. These are more ongoing local programs than is produced at almost any other PBS station in the country. Ours is a real commitment to tell the stories of the place we call home.
I'm open to your comments and ideas. Feel free to email me at mptvgm@matc.edu.

The End of an Era Downton Abbey
T H E FI NA L S E A S O N Premieres January 3rd, on Channel 10 at 8 p.m. Guild Award, and three BAFTAs, plus a 2015 BAFTA Special Award in recognition of the series’ outstanding global success. Reviewers have been no less impressed, lauding last season as “marvelously sustained” (Wall Street Journal), “delicious as ever” (New York Daily News), and “the perfect way to begin the new year” (Los Angeles Times). Writing of the Season 5 finale, Variety marveled at “just how splendid the show can be—warm, funny, and emotional on a dazzling assortment of fronts.” Since Downton Abbey’s first season, its audience has grown at a phenomenal rate, more than doubling by Season 5, which reached 25.5 million viewers. The show is consistently one of the most-watched dramas on American television, often beating all competitors in its Sunday night time slot. Downton Abbey opened Season 1 with a crisis sparked by the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Having weathered the demise of a string of heirs, the horrors of World War I, the Spanish flu, false convictions and romantic betrayals, not to mention the compromising death of a Turkish diplomat in the throes of passion, Downton Abbey is primed for new surprises in Season 6.
T
he top- rated PBS drama of all time approaches its climactic chapter as Downton Abbey enters its sixth and final season on MASTERPIECE, bringing exciting closure to a remarkable series. Where will fate, passion, ambition, and duty lead television’s most beloved characters? Millions of devoted viewers will soon find out on the final season of Downton Abbey, airing in nine enthralling episodes at 8 p.m., Sundays, January 3rd – February 21st, with the series finale airing Sunday, March 6th on Channel 10. Making their bittersweet farewell are members of the beloved cast, including Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter, Joanne Froggatt, Penelope Wilton, Phyllis Logan, Laura Carmichael, Brendan Coyle, Lesley Nicol, Sophie McShera, Robert James-C ollier, Allen Leech, Kevin Doyle, Samantha Bond, David Robb, Raquel Cassidy and Michael Fox. Written and created by Julian Fellowes, Downton Abbey is a Carnival Films/MASTERPIECE Co-Production. Carnival Films, headed by Downton Abbey Executive Producer Gareth Neame, is a division of NBC Universal International Television Studios. With 59 Emmy® nominations, more than any other non-U S show in Emmy® history, Downton Abbey is one of the most honored series on television, having captured 12 Emmys®, three Golden Globes®, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Producers 4
Season 6 opens in 1925 with a series of crises reflecting the momentous changes that are transforming society. Women's rights have given Lady Mary and Lady Edith new positions of responsibility: Mary runs the estate, and Edith manages the magazine she inherited from Michael Gregson. Meanwhile, Tom Branson has left for Boston, and newlyweds Lady Rose and Atticus Aldridge are trying their luck in Jazz Age New York. Anna Bates faces a murder charge, though many still suspect her husband. And for the rest of the servants, big doubts hang over their jobs. Will great houses and the fortunes that support them soon be gone? Explaining the difficult decision to cue the final curtain, Carnival’s Gareth Neame says, “We wanted to close the doors of Downton Abbey when it felt right and natural for the storylines to come together, and when the show was still being enjoyed so much by its fans. We can promise a final season full of all the usual drama and intrigue, but with the added excitement of discovering how and where they all end up.” Reflecting on the spectacular success of Downton Abbey, which has been the most popular series in the 45 years that MASTERPIECE has been on the air, MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Rebecca Eaton sums up: “We are indebted to our UK partners for making a show that will go down in television history, not just for its impeccable writing, acting, and production values, but most importantly, for its enormously warm-hearted audience appeal.”

n February 25th, MPTV invites you to join us for a trip to Chicago’s Driehaus Museum for “Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times”. This stunning exhibition includes 36 period costumes and a fashion overview from the first four seasons of the acclaimed PBS series Downton Abbey. The “Dressing Downton” exhibit explores fashions in Britain from 1912, marked by the sinking of the Titanic, through World War I and into the early 1920’s. The Driehaus, one of the grandest residential buildings of 19th-century Chicago is an amazing setting for this unique opportunity and MPTV will take you there in comfort aboard a Badger Bus. Enjoy lunch on your own at one of the Magnificent Mile’s nearby restaurants. Tickets are $65 for Members and $75 for non-Members. OUTDOOR WISCONSIN
After 32 Seasons, Still Focuses On Wisconsin’s Natural Resources and How to Enjoy Them Season Premiere on Thursday, January 7th As long as there are fish to catch, trails to hike, pollution to clean up, wildlife to observe and nature to conserve, Dan Small will be bringing you the stories. In one of the longest-running shows on television, OUTDOOR WISCONSIN brings its 32nd season to the air on Thursday, January 7th at 9:00 p.m. on MPTV 10. “When we launched OUTDOOR WISCONSIN in 1984, I would never have guessed the show would still be on the air more than 30 years later,” said Host Dan Small. “In the last 31 seasons, we have traveled to every corner of the Badger State, with features on a wide variety of places, people and outdoor activities, but we’ve only scratched the surface. Our two newest personalities, Jeff Kelm and Emmy Fink, bring a youthful exuberance and love of the outdoors to the show that viewers young and old alike can relate.”
Highlights from the 32nd season include: • Segment Host/Producer Jeff Kelm is one of two Wisconsin members of the U.S.A. Ice Team, which will participate in the Ice Fishing World Championship this winter. Find out what Jeff has to do to qualify and compete. • Jeff Kelm takes viewers on an eagle watch and checks out the fishing near a cranberry bog. • Emmy Fink is back with some fun segments - from taking a crack at Old World Base Ball to touring some of Wisconsin's beautiful gardens. • Deb Wolniak shows viewers what climbing and scaling can do for your character. • A visit with some sisters who have a special calling that involves playing in the dirt!

MAN & BEAST WITH MARTIN CLUNES
I
n MAN & BEAST WITH MARTIN CLUNES, Doc Martin star Martin Clunes travels around the world to explore how relationships between humans and animals shift across different cultures. From the cattle he raises for slaughter on his own farm in England to monkeys picking coconuts in Southeast Asia to cormorants working as “fishermen” in Japan, Martin observes man and beast working side by side in partnerships that have existed and evolved over millions of years.
