his month, we would like to acknowledge Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin for is support of Milwaukee PBS. As a proud sponsor of Downton Abbey from 2013 through 2016, the premiere of the Civil War drama, Mercy Street and continued support of the acclaimed PBS science series, NOVA, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin continues its support into 2017 with the debut of Victoria on Masterpiece, premiering January 15th at 8:00 p.m. on Channel 10. And, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin continues to be the local sponsor of Mercy Street, and NOVA for 2017. The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin regional health network is a partnership between Froedtert Health and the Medical College of Wisconsin. It comprises eastern Wisconsin’s only academic medical center, Froedtert Hospital, Milwaukee; Community Memorial Hospital, Menomonee Falls; and St. Joseph’s Hospital, West Bend. In 2016, Froedtert Hospital was rated fourth in the nation as an academic medical center by Vizient, an alliance of U.S. academic medical centers and hospitals. The health network also includes more than 2,700 physicians, across 25 primary and specialty care health centers and clinics. It is the only health system in the region that includes an academic-community partnership. The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network offers exceptional care in the community and streamlined, coordinated access to specialty expertise, clinical trials and the full range of tertiary care capabilities of eastern Wisconsin’s only academic medical center, when the need for more complex treatment arises. “Milwaukee PBS is known for exceptional programming, and we are proud to support an organization whose reputation for quality, integrity and value aligns with our own,” says Kathleen Perlewitz, Vice President, Marketing and Communications for Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Health network. “In an unpredictable world, trust and credibility are so important. We see this every day as we care for people throughout our health network, whether it’s young woman in a clinical trial at one of our Cancer Centers or the family of a critically injured man being treated in our Level I Trauma Center. Our responsibility to our patients always comes first. I believe Milwaukee PBS sees its responsibility to viewers the same way.” Milwaukee PBS is thankful and proud of its collaboration with Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin. We greatly appreciate their underwriting commitment to outstanding programming on Milwaukee PBS. Maureen Bradley, Director, Corporate Development and Underwriting bradley1@matc.edu or (414) 297-8008

Rule, Victoria! Victoria On MASTERPIECE Starring Jenna Coleman in a seven-part series about the most powerful woman the world has ever known.

January 15th, at 8p.m. on Channel 10 Conroy pictures himself as the de facto ruler of the realm— if only he can get the duchess appointed regent for the immature queen. And Peter Firth (South Riding) appears as Victoria’s conniving uncle, the Duke of Cumberland, who is convinced that he rightfully belongs on the throne and diligently conspires to get there. In Victoria, writer Daisy Goodwin imaginatively depicts what it was like for an ill-educated, emotionally deprived teenager to wake up one morning and find that she is the most powerful woman in the world.

J

enna Coleman (Doctor Who) stars as the young Queen Victoria at the outset of her epic reign, which set the stage for an entire era that would be named in her honor. Scripted by bestselling novelist Daisy Goodwin “The Fortune Hunter”, Victoria airs in seven magnificent parts, fit for a queen, on MASTERPIECE, January 15, at 8p.m. on Channel 10. Following Victoria from her accession to the throne at age 18, through her education in politics, courtship and marriage, Victoria paints a portrait of a monarch who was raised to be the pawn of her powerful elders but who wasted no time in showing the empire who was in charge. The stellar cast includes Rufus Sewell (The Man in the High Castle) as Lord Melbourne, the British prime minister who was Victoria’s father figure and intimate friend; Tom Hughes (Dancing on the Edge) as the handsome, brilliant and awkward Prince Albert, who stole Victoria’s heart after a rocky start; and Alex Jennings (Churchill’s Secret) as Leopold I, King of Belgium, Victoria and Albert’s matchmaking uncle who had dreams of a dynasty for his obscure royal line—which he amazingly achieved. Paul Rhys (Borgia) plays Sir John Conroy, the rumored lover of Victoria’s mother, the Duchess of Kent, a German princess played by German actress Catherine H. Flemming.

4

That it happened at all was practically a miracle. Victoria was queen only by virtue of ill luck and unfruitful marriages on the part of her uncles, who failed to produce legitimate heirs to the crown. Furthermore, her immediate predecessors were so disliked as kings that the institution of the monarchy seemed to be doomed. Victoria charts how the new ruler rose to the challenge and weathered a series of crises—some of her own making—without ever losing her youthful charm and innate sense of justice, which made her popular with her subjects. Goodwin has been careful to stay faithful to the facts, while reading between the lines to fill in the gaps where the early Victorians were scrupulously silent. The result is a gripping historical pageant that reveals a side of Victoria that is at odds with her later reputation for prudery and a high moral tone. In other words, Victoria was not a Victorian as we use the term. “She was very, very keen on sex,” says Goodwin, adding, “with her husband. She had nine children. She didn’t lie back and think of England, at all!” Victoria’s name is another case of our inheriting the wrong idea. There were so many Victorias named in tribute to the queen, during and after her reign, that it comes as a surprise to learn that when she was christened Alexandrina Victoria at her birth, both names were practically made up. Previous British queens were Jane, Mary, Elizabeth, or Anne. The regal name by which a king or queen is to be officially known is up to the sovereign. In choosing to be called Queen Victoria, could she have been signaling that she would be a queen like no other?

PBS Original Drama Series MERCY STREET Season 2

Premieres January 22, 2017 New Season to Take Viewers Even Further Beyond the Hospital with Intimate Look at Lives on the Civil War Battlefield and Home Front

Confederate power, all set against the intensifying war, starting with the Seven Days’ Battle and culminating with Antietam. The new season also delves deeper into the lives of newly freed African Americans, exploring – among other areas – life in a contraband camp, where formerly enslaved African Americans are forced to confront horrific living conditions and disease, but also get a glimpse of freedom.

ERCY STREET, the much-acclaimed Civil Warera drama set in the occupied city of Alexandria, Virginia, will return to PBS stations for a second season on January 22 at 7:00 p.m. on Channel 10. Allegiances blur, loyalties shift and the drama intensifies as the scope of the war pushes beyond Mansion House, the former hotel commandeered by northern troops to serve as a Union hospital. Executive produced by Ridley Scott (The Martian, Gladiator, Thelma and Louise and The Good Wife); David W. Zucker (BrainDead, The Good Wife and The Man in the High Castle) of Scott Free; Lisa Q. Wolfinger (Desperate Crossing, the untold story of the Mayflower) and David Zabel (ER), the series follows the doctors, nurses and soldiers, as well as free, enslaved and contraband African Americans and other residents of the war-torn city, as they navigate the new world emerging from the most cataclysmic event in our country’s history.

“We continued to create MERCY STREET Season Two with an eye for dramatic and historic storytelling,” said co-creator and executive producer David Zabel. “That was our bread and butter in Season One and we pushed the envelope even further for this new season, and we can’t wait to see the reactions of our new and returning audiences.” “Season Two of MERCY STREET will connect viewers with familiar faces as well as introduce new characters. Their storylines will build upon one another through a constantly changing atmosphere,” said executive producer David W. Zucker. “We look forward to an exciting new season.” “The second season of MERCY STREET dives deeper into the historic time of the Civil War and weaves in romantic plotlines, medical advancements and battle scenes to get into the true essence of the period,” said co-creator and executive producer Lisa Q. Wolfinger. “We greatly value PBS stations for sharing this type of programming, and look forward to all that’s ahead for the series.”

“We are excited for the return of MERCY STREET as it exemplifies the high-quality of programming we strive for on our PBS stations,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Officer and General Manager, General Season Two picks up directly from the dramatic events Audience Programming, PBS. “As we dive into new at the end of the first season finale, continuing to explore storylines, viewers will be captivated by the authentic life in the chaotic city of Alexandria, the complicated historical and dramatic second season that we’re very interpersonal dynamics of Dr. Foster, Nurse Mary and proud to host on PBS.” the Mansion House staff, the increasingly precarious position of the Green family and the changing world of Milwaukee PBS will host an advanced screening of the burgeoning black population.
