s 2014 begins, we send our viewers wishes for a happy, healthy, and fulfilling new year. MPTV looks forward to providing engaging, exciting, and informative programming in 2014. As you adjust to the cold, snowy January winter, we hope you will enjoy the month of January’s exciting programming. January is a month of new beginnings for MPTV. Season 3 of Around the Corner with John McGivern premiers on Friday, January 17 at 8 p.m. on Channel 10. Downton Abbey, Season 4, premiers on Sunday, January 5, at 8:00 p.m. Many of us have been eagerly awaiting the season opener to see what awaits the Crawley family after the sudden and unexpected death of one of Downton Abbey’s favorite characters, Mathew. Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin is a local underwriter of Downton Abbey, Season 4, making it possible for MPTV to offer this beautifully crafted production to MPTV viewers. In addition, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin underwrites the acclaimed national science series Nova for MPTV. The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin regional health care network is composed of an academic medical center, two community hospitals and more than 30 primary and specialty care health centers and clinics. It is the only health system in the region that includes an academiccommunity partnership. The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network offers exceptional care in the community and streamlined, coordinated access to specialty expertise, clinical trials and the full range of tertiary care capabilities of eastern Wisconsin’s only academic medical center when the need for more complex treatment arises. “We are proud to support the high quality programming that MPTV consistently offers its viewers,” said Kathi Perlewitz, vice president of marketing and communications. “For example, Nova, an exceptional program that illustrates the importance of science and discovery, is consistent with our work as an academic medical center, the cornerstone of our academic-community health network. Downton Abbey, an acclaimed series with a large and loyal following, exemplifies the outstanding entertainment that we are pleased to help MPTV bring to our community.” MPTV is thankful and proud of its collaboration with Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin. We greatly appreciate their underwriting commitment to quality programming such as Downton Abbey and Nova. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV. Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey, Season 4 With guest stars Shirley MacLaine and Paul Giamatti, Harriet Walter, Gary Carr, Joanna David, Julian Ovenden, and Tom Cullen Sundays, January 5 – February 23 spellbound. USA Today ranked it as a perfect four stars out of four. The Hollywood Reporter called it “an absolute pleasure to watch.” And The New York Times praised it as “delightful escapism.” Ahead of the celebrated final episode—the #1 show of the night, beating all broadcast and cable competition in prime time—Newsday had this summation: “The finale of a superb season does not disappoint. Grade A(+).” “We’d follow the Crawleys off a cliff,” echoed The Philadelphia Inquirer. “Please have Carson pack us a lunch.” The returning cast includes Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Joanne Froggatt, Rob James-Collier, Lily James, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Lesley Nicol, Dame Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton, and a host of others, joined by Shirley MacLaine (Oscar® for Best Actress, Terms of Endearment), who reprises her role as Martha Levinson, the forthright American mother of Cora, Countess of Grantham (McGovern). Martha again battles wits with Cora’s wickedly acerbic mother-in-law, Violet (Smith).

T

he most-watched drama in PBS history enters its fourth gripping season with the whole world waiting to learn how the beloved characters deal with a shocking tragedy. The acclaimed ensemble is back, together with returning guest star Academy Award®-winner Shirley MacLaine and new guest star Paul Giamatti. Also joining the cast are Harriet Walter, Gary Carr, Joanna David, and Tom Cullen, as the legend continues on Downton Abbey, Season 4, airing over eight Sundays beginning with a two-hour premiere on January 5, 2014 on MPTV. Written and created by Julian Fellowes, Downton Abbey, Season 4 is a Carnival/MASTERPIECE Co-Production. Carnival is a division of NBCUniversal International Television Production. The series’ many accolades include nine Emmys®, two Golden Globes®, and a coveted Screen Actors Guild Award® for the ensemble cast. Viewership and social media buzz have been soaring since the series launched in January 2011. Season 3 reached a record 24.1 million viewers, more than any other drama in the history of PBS, and the season had the highest Twitter buzz ever for public television. Replete with weddings, births, abandonment, financial reversal, sudden riches, and equally sudden deaths, Season 3 left critics 4

Among the new faces are Paul Giamatti (Sideways) as Cora’s playboy brother, Harold, who appears in the season finale; Dame Harriet Walter (Little Dorrit) as Violet’s old friend Lady Shackleton; Gary Carr (Death in Paradise) as jazz singer Jack Ross; Joanna David (Bleak House) as the Duchess of Yeovil; Tom Cullen (World Without End) as the dashing Lord Gillingham, and Julian Ovenden (Smash, Any Human Heart) as an unexpected houseguest. Allwho tuned in last season know that Matthew Crawley—heir to Downton Abbey, husband to Lady Mary (Dockery), and brand new father to a baby boy and successor—lies dead on a country road next to his overturned roadster. On top of this, the family is still grieving over the death in childbirth of Sybil, Mary’s youngest sister, who also left a baby behind. Season 4 opens six months later. Although it is the 1920s, Britain still observes mourning rituals that are almost Victorian in their solemnity. Nonetheless, the Crawleys are beginning to snap out of it: Robert, Lord Grantham (Bonneville), must manage the estate without his canny son-in-law; Cora suddenly faces a staffing crisis; Violet, who has seen enough tragedy, knows how to recoup quickly; Isobel (Wilton), Matthew’s mother, may never recover; Edith (Carmichael), who was jilted at the altar, tempts scandal with a new beau; and Mary now finds herself the most desirable widow in Yorkshire. The servants also pick up, buck up, and get on with it—with new arrivals, departures, rivalries, and betrayals among the downstairs staff. Life goes on at Downton Abbey.

Masterpiece: The Game is On!

SHERLOCK Premieres on MASTERPIECE ON MPTV on January 19

about Sherlock’s “demise,” and express their eagerness to find out what happens next. “We love that Sherlock fans are so passionate and eager to see Season 3,” says PBS Chief Programming Executive and General Manager of General Audience Programming Beth Hoppe. “The pairing of Downton Abbey and Sherlock in January offers a blockbuster night of British drama only on PBS stations.” "We are hugely excited about this next series of Sherlock, and have worked closely with our partners, MASTERPIECE and PBS, to bring these episodes to U.S. audiences in January," says Sue Vertue, executive producer for Sherlock and Hartswood Films, which coproduces Sherlock with MASTERPIECE and BBC Wales for BBC One. "We promise our fans that Season 3 is worth waiting for." Emmy® and Golden Globe®-nominated and winner of a Peabody Award, Sherlock has been atelevision sensation since the first season aired in 2010, with critics calling it "triumphant" (Hollywood Reporter), "crackling with imagination" (San Francisco Chronicle), and "seduction through deduction" (Los Angeles Times).

B

enedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman Return in Highly Anticipated Season 3.

Sherlock helped make megastars of Cumberbatch and Freeman, whose portrayals of the famous crime fighting duo USA Today described as “two of the best performances you’ll see anywhere.” As in previous seasons, titles for the three episodes are pegged to a classic Sherlock Holmes title by Arthur Conan Doyle—delightfully, wittily, and briskly updated, of course. “The Empty Hearse” – Sunday, January 19, at 9pm

A date has been set for the return of one of television’s most eagerly anticipated shows: Sherlock Season 3 will premiere on MASTERPIECE on Channel 10 on Sunday, January 19 at pm, following the 8pm broadcast of Downton Abbey.

“The Sign of Three” – Sunday, January 26, at 9pm “His Last Vow” – Sunday, February 2, at 9pm

Benedict Cumberbatch (The Fifth Estate, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit, The Office UK) return as Sherlock Holmes and John Watson in three new 90minute episodes of the contemporary reinvention of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle classic, created by Steven Moffat (Doctor Who) and Mark Gatiss. “The genius Sherlock team has done it again,” says MASTERPIECE executive producer Rebecca Eaton. “These new episodes are as wildly-imaginative and brilliantly-produced as all the others. These people are GOOD!” Nearly 11 million viewers tuned into the second season of Sherlock, which ended with one of the most shocking cliffhangers in television history. Fans flocked to the internet to speculate 5

A COMMUNITY GIFT

MPTV’s Local Productions Take a Closer Look at Milwaukee By Julie Hill Lehr

Whether you’re a part of Elmo’s World or Lady Mary’s you know that PBS brings quality television to you, but did you know that Milwaukee Public Television (MPTV) has some stars of its own? MPTV produces almost a dozen weekly programs that cover everything from the hottest political debates to the latest in Indian cooking to local art in the community. Numerous locally-produced specials focus on varying topics from a Milwaukee viewpoint. News and Political Issues Black Nouveau is an award-winning program offering messages that promote positive images, interviews and profiles of African-American movers and shakers. In January Black Nouveau has two special programs one on human trafficking and another on building better men. For more than a decade, 8

4th Street Forum has been part of the Greater Milwaukee community. It encourages civil discourse on difficult issues that affect us all. InterCHANGE provides an in-depth examination of major concerns affecting southeastern Wisconsin. The spirited analysis of four panelists provides a variety of insights. ¡Adelante! celebrates the rich heritage of the Latino community. The program airs in Spanish with subtitles in English. Program segments originally taped in English are captioned in Spanish. Culture and Personal Interest A new season begins in January for Around the Corner with John McGivern. Milwaukee’s own John McGivern hosts this program focusing on the unique qualities of communities in Milwaukee and Wisconsin. Around the Corner with John McGivern is broadcast statewide and now in Minnesota. The Arts Page features four to five segments on the

arts and culture--short performances, interviews, profiles of well-known and not-so-well-known artists, in the arts and creative community in the Milwaukee area, the region, the state, and the nation. With I Remember viewers get an intimate look at politicians, entrepreneurs, artists, educators and other guests as they recall the great experiences and special moments, both large and small, of their lives. Each episode focuses on unique memories that bring alive the people and events of another time. Outdoor Pursuits Devoted to the outdoor enthusiast, Outdoor Wisconsin is a half hour weekly magazine series seen throughout the midwest that travels Wisconsin covering a variety of outdoor activities and related projects. This program celebrates its 30th year on MPTV with a new season beginning January 2014. Healthy Eating Healthful Indian Flavors with Alamelu features Alamelu Vairavan, a native of South India, who has lived most of her adult life in the United States. Over the years, she has developed a deep interest in promoting healthy cooking and eating to the American public using spices, legumes and Indian cooking techniques. This locallyproduced program can be seen throughout the country on PBS’ Create channel and on MPTV. Certified raw chef Caroline Carter and her daughter Shenita Ray host Cooking Raw. The duo puts a new twist on popular recipes by substituting uncooked ingredients. The friendly and down-to-earth mother-daughter team demonstrates how to use nuts, vegetables, fruits, protein concentrates, natural sweeteners, spices, seeds, yeast, and various kitchen gadgets to create meals that are rich in flavor, enzymes, minerals and vitamins.

America’s Universities. Wilder and Gousha discuss the history of racism at Harvard, Yale, Virginia, the University of North Carolina and other American universities. February features a look at the restoration of a Milwaukee landmark. Memorializing Kosciuszko brings the story of General Tadeusz Kosciuszko to Milwaukee viewers. This special documentary tells the story of Milwaukee’s south side community’s involvement in restoring the statue and the importance of this statue in Milwaukee history. This documentary captures the full flavor of this effort as we follow the group of dedicated volunteers in their efforts to raise the funds, and return the statue to its former glory. Tracks Ahead Travels is another MPTV production. This magazine-style series explores every aspect of the railroads of the world. It features railroad prototypes, models, personalities and lore covering not only the railways and modelers of the past, but of the present and future and is seen nationally on PBS. Previous specials include a behind the scenes look at the Pfister hotel, the connection between John F. Kennedy and Wisconsin, and a look at a spectacular event honoring Milwaukee veterans. No matter the topic, these locally-produced programs have one-thing in common, they explore the Milwaukee viewing area in a way that national programs cannot. MPTV is proud of its local programs.General Manager Ellis Bromberg said, "When we green-light a local production, we expect it to offer important content that commercial stations and cable networks aren't providing, and to do so in a way that reflects our standards of quality and accessibility. “ Keep watching for more educational, inspiring, and entertaining local programs from Milwaukee Public Television.

Specials New in January, On the Issues with host Mike Gousha. This latest episode features MIT Professor Craig Steven Wilder, author of the recently published book Ebony and Ivy: Race, Slavery and the Troubled History of 9

THE CLINTON 12 THE CLINTON 12 captures a pivotal moment in the American civil rights

movement James Earl Jones narrates the compelling story of the desegregation of the first public high school in the. On August 27, 1956, a small group of courageous black students walked into an all-white high school in Clinton, Tenn. and into history. Seldom-seen archival footage and first-person accounts from 11 of the original "Clinton 12" and others involved in this tumultuous event illuminate the horrors of segregation in the Jim Crow South. 1/12, 9a.m. 36HD Complete Up-to-Date Program Listings and Repeats on mptv.org

Adolf Hitler was, arguably, the most extraordinary leader who has ever lived. He left behind a legacy of destruction without parallel in history. Why did millions support him, ultimately to the destruction of their own country? These three films examine Hitler’s relationship with the people he led during the Second World War, with the help of testimony from people who were there, compelling archive film and dramatic reconstructions.

T

he coywolf, a mixture of western coyote and eastern wolf, is a remarkable new hybrid carnivore that is taking over territories once roamed by wolves and slipping unnoticed into our cities. Beginning in Canada, the story of how it came to be is an extraordinary tale of how quickly adaptation and evolution can occur, especially when humans interfere. Tag along as scientists study this new top predator, tracking it from the wilderness of Ontario, through parking lots, alleys and backyards in Toronto all the way to the streets of New York City.

old for the first time in Hawking’s own words and with unique access to his home and public life, this is a personal journey through Hawking’s world. The audience joins him at home, under the care of his nursing team as he “wows” a packed theatre audience; in Silicon Valley as he hopes to speed up his communication system; and as he throws a party for family and friends. The film also highlights his greatest scientific discoveries and plots his rise to fame and superstardom.

GREAT PERFORMANCES: BARRYMORE

H

In “Barrymore,” 83-year-old stage and screen legend Christopher Plummer portrays another titan of theater and film from an earlier age John Barrymore. This acclaimed film adaptation of William Luce’s 1997 play is set in 1942 during the final months of Barrymore’s life. On the stage of a Broadway theater, the famously combative star struggles to recreate his performance in Shakespeare’s Richard III, recalling the highs and lows of his remarkable life and career in the process.
