s 2015 begins, we would like to extend warm greetings to our MPTV viewers for a happy, healthy, and wonderful year ahead. We are looking forward to offering our viewers another season of exciting, entertaining, and informative programs. After the bustle of the holidays, January is a great time to cuddle up on the couch or by a warm fire to watch one of MPTV’s award-winning programs, including premieres of Around the Corner with John McGivern, Season 4, and Masterpiece’s Downton Abbey, Season 5. After four seasons of rave reviews and growing numbers of fans, Downton Abbey, Season 5, premieres on Sunday, January 4th, at 8:00 p.m. The time will now be 1924 on the Grantham estate, with Britain’s first ever Labour Prime Minister in power. Executive Producer Gareth Neame has indicated there should be “twists and turns” to this year’s plot, as many viewers eagerly anticipate what’s ahead for Lady Mary, Lady Edith, Anna, and Bates. Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin is a local underwriter of Downton Abbey, Season 5, making it possible for MPTV to offer this beautifully crafted British BBC production to MPTV viewers. Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin has been a proud sponsor of Downton Abbey since January, 2013. In addition, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin underwrites the acclaimed national science series Nova on MPTV. The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin regional health care network is composed of an academic medical center, two community hospitals and more than 30 primary and specialty care health centers and clinics. It is the only health system in the region that includes an academic-community partnership. The Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin health network offers exceptional care in the community and streamlined, coordinated access to specialty expertise, clinical trials and the full range of tertiary care capabilities of eastern Wisconsin’s only academic medical center when the need for more complex treatment arises. “We are proud to support the high quality programming that MPTV consistently offers its viewers,” said Kathi Perlewitz, vice president of marketing and communications. “For example, Nova, an exceptional program that illustrates the importance of science and discovery, is consistent with our work as an academic medical center, the cornerstone of our academic-community health network. Downton Abbey, an acclaimed series with a large and loyal following, exemplifies the outstanding entertainment that we are pleased to help MPTV bring to our community.” MPTV is thankful and proud of its collaboration with Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin. We greatly appreciate their underwriting commitment to quality programs such as Downton Abbey and Nova. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV. ince last year’s season finale of Downton Abbey, thousands of our viewers have been awaiting the premiere of Season 5 of the most watched drama in PBS history. Well, the wait is over! All new episodes of premiere on January 4 @ 8:00 p.m. on Channel 10.1. Over the next 9 Sundays, the Emmy® and Golden Globe®award winning series will reacquaint us with the characters we’ve grown so familiar with, and also introduce us to new characters that we can only assume are going to add new secrets and new love this season. Check out more information about the Season 5 premiere on page 4. Immediately after each episode of Downton Abbey, stay tuned for Manor of Speaking. This lively 30-minute postshow program will recap each episode with rotating guests, super fans, surprise guests, behind-the scenes stories and a few history lessons tossed in for good measure. And, if that doesn’t give you your fill of Downton Abbey, check out Manners of Downton Abbey: A Masterpiece Special airing on January 4th @ 10:00 p.m., also on Channel 10.1. While all of these related programs are hitting the airwaves, it’s exciting to know that, series creator Julian Fellowes, the production team and cast of Downton Abbey are already at work on Season 6.

Downton Abbey is leading us into a wide array of programs debuting or making their series return to MPTV. American Experience starts up this month leading off with profiles of the eccentric creator Robert Ripley and inventor Thomas Edison. Masterpiece Mystery! debuts Grantchester, a six-part series of a young clergyman and a down-to-earth cop who team up to fight crime in 1953’s Grantchester. Locally, we’re excited for Season 31 of Outdoor Wisconsin, Season 3 of Healthful Flavors with Alamelu and Season 4 of Around the Corner with John McGivern, all debuting this month. Check out coverage of these premieres on page 9 for more information. We’re entering 2015 on an exciting path for great programs and service to the southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. From all of us at Milwaukee Public Television, best wishes for a wonderful 2015.

Downton Abbey, Season 5 With guest stars Richard E. Grant, Anna Chancellor, Rade Sherbedgia, Harriet Walter, and Peter Egan
Sundays, January 4th - March 1st, on Channel 10
D
ownton Abbey returns for an epic fifth season of intimately interlaced stories centered on an English country estate—a deliciously entertaining formula that has made it the highestrated drama in PBS history. Downton Abbey, Season 5, airs Sundays, January 4th - March 1st, on MASTERPIECE on Channel 10. Season 5 features returning stars Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Jim Carter, Laura Carmichael, Joanne Froggatt, Allen Leech, Robert JamesCollier, Penelope Wilton, Phyllis Logan, Lily James, Brendan Coyle, Lesley Nicol, Sophie McShera, Samantha Bond, Ed Speleers, Kevin Doyle, Raquel Cassidy, David Robb, Tom Cullen, Julian Ovenden, Daisy Lewis, Douglas Reith, Jeremy Swift, and Andrew Scarborough. This acclaimed ensemble is joined by guest stars Harriet Walter (Atonement), reprising her role as Lady Shackleton, and Peter Egan (Death at a Funeral), who returns as Lord Flintshire, together with completely new characters played by Richard E. Grant (Girls), Anna Chancellor (The Hour), and Rade Sherbedgia (24). “Four wonderful seasons of Downton Abbey, each drawing a larger audience than the last, and now Series 5,”says MASTERPIECE Executive Producer Rebecca Eaton. “This is a television dream come true!” Executive Producer Gareth Neame says, “Our cast and crew have been immersed in the world of Downton for the last five years and it is a thrill to have seen it grow in popularity in the United States to become one of the most watched shows on television. Viewers can expect all the highs and lows, the heady mix of drama, romance and comedy and plenty of new surprises.” Like every previous outing, Season 4 dazzled critics. The New York Times wrote that the show, “casts a spell on viewers not unlike the allure of a Harry Potter novel.” NPR chimed in, “Julian Fellowes … has crafted characters so well-rounded, so complicated, and so interesting that we’re drawn to them no matter what the circumstances.” And Variety’s praise entered another dimension: “This annual escape into the early-20th century is an experience in time travel not to be missed.” Viewers can expect to follow plot threads left dangling from last season, including Lady Mary’s courtship contest, Lady Edith’s 4
trials as a secret single mom, Thomas’s scheming against Bates, Robert’s battles against modernity, Tom’s quest to be true to his ideals, Violet’s one-line zingers, and much, much more. One of the recurring themes of Downton Abbey is change, from the wrenching consequences of the Titanic disaster in Season 1 to a notorious automobile accident at the end of Season 3—plus World War I, women’s rights, and the new morals, inventions, and fashions of the 1920s. Which is where Season 5 kicks off. It’s 1924. The United Kingdom has its first Labor Party prime minister. The radio is the latest miracle of the age. And Downton’s traditional ways are besieged on all fronts, as evidenced by this exchange between the head housekeeper, Mrs. Hughes, and the butler, Mr. Carson: “We’re catching up, Mr. Carson. Whether you like it or not, Downton is catching up with the times we live in,” says the forward-thinking Mrs. Hughes. “That’s exactly what I’m afraid of!” the butler retorts.

Southeastern Wisconsin Kids in Grades K-3 Encouraged to Submit Original Stories
Looking for a fun winter activity for your children? Milwaukee Public Television has just the thing. MPTV’s annual PBS KIDS Writers Contest begins January 1st and runs through March 13th. The contest, made possible in part by local financial support from the Harley-Davidson Foundation, is designed to promote the advancement of children's literacy skills through hands-on, active learning. In conjunction with the PBS KIDS Writers Contest, MPTV is also offering free workshops (see related article on page 13). Participants will learn the basics of story construction and also focus on the importance of illustrations in storytelling, and will be encouraged to create a story and enter it in the PBS KIDS Writers Contest. In the spring of 2015, MPTV will select local winners, award prizes, and the winning stories will be featured on MPTV. The local winners will then be entered into the national contest. National winners will be announced during the summer of 2015. To enter the contest and for more information on entry rules and contest resources, visit mptv.org/kids&family.
Local Scene A new year brings a fresh outlook, an opportunity for
renewal and brand new local programs. In January, enjoy Black Nouveau’s special “Tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.” concert featuring Milwaukee’s Bel Canto Chorus. Recorded at Holy Redeemer Institutional Church of God in Christ, the concert uses music and words to bridge the gulf of segregation and prejudice. The Arts Page features Wisconsin-based certified antiques appraiser Barbara Eash who provides insight into common questions people ask when getting items appraised. Eash is the head appraiser for the annual MPTV Appraisal Fair. 4th Street Forum on the Road discusses smart manufacturing, jobs and methods at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. For forum event times visit mptv.org. ¡Adelante! highlights glass-etching artist Gerardo Pereda. I Remember continues special encore presentations in tribute to guests who passed away in 2014 including Marion Chester Read who discusses Milwaukee area Girl Scouts, and Jim Kupferschmidt, who talks about the history of Milwaukee’s breweries. InterChange continues its spirited conversation about our area’s important issues. Back for new seasons are Around the Corner with John McGivern, Outdoor Wisconsin, and Healthful Indian Flavors with Alamelu, all premiering this month. See the separate more in-depth article about these favorites on page 9. If you are waiting for the new season of Tracks Ahead you won’t have to wait much longer. It premieres later this winter. International Journalists Visit MPTV A group of 21 international journalists, accompanied by media literacy students from Bay View and Washington High Schools in Milwaukee, visited the Milwaukee Public Television studios on November 24. MATC instructors Kevin Pulz and Mark Bergner spoke with them about the college's Television & Video Production and e-Production programs, and the group watched a production of Panthervision, a weekly public affairs program produced by UW Milwaukee and MATC students. The stop at MPTV, one of several in the Milwaukee area, was arranged by the Arts @ Large International Institute of Wisconsin.

THE ARTS PAGE The powerful exhibit at the Jewish Museum Milwaukee, "Stitching History from the Holocaust" tells the story of Paul and Hedwig "Hedy" Strnad, a Jewish couple living in Prague in 1939. Paul writes to his cousin Alvin in Milwaukee to immigrate to the US, and hopes that his wife's dress designs will be the key to getting them passage to the US. Sadly, Paul and Hedy both perish in the Holocaust. This exhibit is a tribute to their lives, creating their legacy via fashion with the help of the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, and exploring the deeper questions of loss and preservation. 1/10, 11:30a.m. 36HD

Mittens and More Community Service DriveCollects Winter Accessories for Those in Need MPTV’s seventh annual Mittens and More Community Service Drive collected 4,567 hats, scarves, gloves and mittens this year for southeastern Wisconsin’s families in need. The items were distributed to 33 agencies and schools. Many thanks to our partners who provided drop-off locations. They are Milwaukee Area Technical College, Frank’s Sewing Center, Copacetic, The Country Springs Hotel, JLK Outlet, Ben Franklin Crafts, and the MPTV Auction Studios. We appreciate you letting us collect our items at your locations. And special thanks too, to all of you who donated and/or volunteered for our drive. AMERICAN MASTERS: RICKY JAY: DECEPTIVE PRACTICE
T
ake a mesmerizing journey into the world of modern magic and the small circle of eccentrics who are its perpetual devotees. At its center is the multi-talented Ricky Jay, a best-selling author, historian, actor and leading collector of antiquarian books and artifacts, and, above all, a conjurer capable of creating a profound sense of wonder and disbelief in even the most jaded of audiences.

SECRETS OF THE DEAD: BEN FRANKLIN’S BONES
I
n November 1997, when the skeletal remains of at least 28 bodies were unearthed in the basement of an elegant townhouse, police feared it was the work of a serial killer. But when research indicated the bones actually dated to the mid-1700s, the implications became even more dramatic. This was no ordinary house: 36 Craven Street was the former residence of one of the most important men in American history, Benjamin Franklin. Could one of America’s most iconic figures have been responsible in some way for the bones in the basement?
