uly is a festive and exciting time as we gather with family and friends to celebrate our nation’s 239th birthday – with parades, barbecues, and the Fourth of July fireworks. We would like to recognize a returning underwriter, the Forest County Potawatomi Foundation, for its support of the MPTV children’s program Arthur and MPTV’s PBS KIDS Writers Contest. Arthur airs Monday through Friday at 5:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. The MPTV’s PBS KIDS Writers Contest is a national-local contest designed for children in kindergarten through 3rd grade to create, write, and illustrate their own original story. In doing so, the contest hopes to promote and advance a child’s proficiency in reading, writing, and critical thinking skills. As “Keepers of the Sacred Fire,” the Forest County Potawatomi have maintained traditional tribal values by stressing the importance of family, emphasizing respect for the environment, and instilling the value of looking out for one another. To that end, the Forest County Potawatomi Foundation was established to fight poverty, promote economic opportunity, strengthen communities, and provide an example of responsible citizenship. Since 1999, the Foundation has contributed more than $30 million to charitable causes in Southeast Wisconsin and across the state. According to Kaye Garcia, Executive Director, at the Forest County Potawatomi Foundation, “The Forest County Potawatomi Foundation takes pride in its community support of Milwaukee Public Television and its outstanding programming. Programs such as Arthur promote positive social development in young children, while the MPTV’s PBS KIDS Writers Contest promotes children's creativity and writing competency. Both of these MPTV programs are consistent with the Forest County Potawatomi culture, tradition, and custom of providing and supporting promising futures to children and families in the community. “ MPTV is appreciative of the Forest County Potawatomi Foundation’s underwriting support. Their vision and commitment makes it possible for MPTV to continue to offer engaging children’s literacy programs like Arthur and the MPTV’s PBS KIDS Writers Contest to children and their families. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV. Contact Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu and (414) 297-8008.

hile visiting family in New York last fall, my wife Mel and I took in a Broadway musical that I had always wanted to see, On the Town. You may remember the 1949 film of the show, which starred Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Betty Garrett, and Ann Miller, about three sailors on leave in New York who have 24hour flings with three young women. The music by Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green, is lively and fun, and lots of folks know the song “New York, New York” from it, which teaches a geography lesson about two well-known locations in the city: “the Bronx is up, but the Battery’s down”! We’ve shown the movie on Milwaukee Public Television, but as wonderful as it is, there’s something missing from it – the poignant song, “Some Other Time.” That was the highlight of the Broadway revival for me: that song. As the couples part – the sailors’ one-day leave is ending – they sing: Where has the time all gone to? Haven’t done half the things we want to, Oh well, we’ll catch up some other time…. Just when the fun is starting Comes the time for parting, Let’s be glad for what we’ve had And what’s to come. There’s so much more embracing Still to be done, but time is racing, Oh well, we’ll catch up some other time…. “Some Other Time” is one of those songs that sticks in your head – and it has been lodged in mine for months now. You see, like the sailors, my stay is ending – that is, my stay at MPTV. I retire from the station on June 30. It’s been a wonderful 15-year run for me at MPTV. We have introduced entertaining and important programs to the community, we have hit new heights in fundraising, the terrific MPTV staff has garnered numerous awards for excellence during my tenure, and we have made many internal changes that will serve the station well in coming years. I am humbled by the fact
8-9
that I am the second longest serving general manager in the station’s history; no one will beat Otto Schlaak’s 26-year (19601986) record. Mel and I will be moving to Florida to pursue new professional and personal interests. We won’t miss the snow, but we will miss many other things about southeastern Wisconsin: the lakefront festivals and neighborhood fairs, the brats and frozen custard, walks along Lake Michigan, the theaters and museums, the passionate sports fans, the diversity of our community, excellent schools and welcoming congregations, the best public television station in the country, and above all, the friendliest people you’ll find anywhere. If the sailors in On the Town can be wistful about their one-day romances, Mel and I can certainly have mixed emotions about leaving Milwaukee and MPTV – and we do. But we think it’s the right time for us to do this, and we believe we have left the community and the station good shape for the next generation. True, we haven’t done half the things we want to; there’s still so much more to be done. But we are glad for what we’ve had and what’s to come. It often seems like the fun is just starting. But the clock is racing. And the time has come for parting. Oh well… We’ll catch up some other time. Sincerely,
Ellis Bromberg General Manager 3

THE BOMB
PBS’ THE BOMB ExPlOrES THE InvEnTIOn Of THE ATOMIc BOMB And HOw THE nuclEAr AgE cHAngEd THE wOrld
JULY 28TH AT 7:00p.m. ON CHANNEL 10
“The arc of this story is filled with fascinating breakthroughs, agonizing human dilemmas, and unintended consequences,” said Bill Margol, Senior Director of Programming and Development for PBS. “THE BOMB provides a comprehensive look at the nuclear age and offers a chance for current generations to understand the indelible impact this discovery and invention had, and continues to have, on all of us.”
P
BS’ new special THE BOMB tells the story of the most powerful and destructive device ever invented. Premiering on Channel 10, Tuesday, July 28th, 7:00-9:00 p.m. in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the detonation of the atomic bomb, the show highlights how humans harnessed this incredible power and what challenges we have faced living with it for 70 years. THE BOMB features newly restored footage of nuclear weaponry, some of which has been declassified only recently by the Department of Defense. THE BOMB takes viewers behind the scenes of the first atomic bomb, revealing how it was developed and how it changed the planet, ushering in a new era and reshaping our lives even today. Rare footage from bomb tests through the 1950s and 60s demonstrates the power and strangely compelling beauty of nuclear explosions. The film focuses on the choices society has made — and continues to make — to live with an invention that could destroy the planet. Included are interviews with Richard Rhodes, foremost atomic bomb historian, former Secretaries of Defense and State William Perry and George Shultz, respectively, scientists, weapons designers, pilots, witnesses and ordinary men and women who have lived and worked with the atomic bomb.
4
PBS continues to offer timely, relevant programs that look at history and the human experience. Along with THE BOMB, PBS presents URANIUM – TWISTING THE DRAGON’S TAIL on July 28th and July 29th at 9:00 p.m., an epic adventure with physicist and YouTube sensation Dr. Derek Muller to find the most desired and hated rock on Earth. Additionally, NOVA “Nuclear Meltdown Disaster”, which airs on July 29th at 8:00 p.m., pays homage to the brave workers who stayed behind as an earthquake and tsunami crippled the nuclear power plant in one of history’s worst nuclear accidents.

WHITECHAPEL Rupert Penry-Jones, Phil Davis and Steve Pemberton return as detectives Chandler and Miles and historical researcher Ed Buchan in these atmospheric thrillers set in London's East End. This series sees the team confronted by twisted, gothic murders that reach right into their fears and superstitions... While Chandler and team try to solve these crimes, the station itself seems to pulse with unexplained phenomena. Mysterious footsteps in corridors, creeping mold and silty water. Could the station be haunted? And who or what is really behind the evil that surfaces in Whitechapel? Series begins 7/26 at 10p.m. on 10HD 8

AMERICAN EXPERIENCE: MOUNT RUSHMORE High on a granite cliff in South Dakota’s Black Hills tower the huge carved faces of four American presidents. Together they constitute the world’s largest sculpture. The story of Mount Rushmore’s creation is as bizarre and wonderful as the monument itself. It is the tale of a hyperactive, temperamental artist whose talent and determination propelled the project, even as his ego and obsession threatened to tear it apart. It is the story of hucksterism and hyperbole, of a massive public works project in the midst of an economic depression. 7/4, 9p.m. 36HD Complete Up-to-Date Program Listings and Repeats on mptv.org

THE AMBASSADOR
T
HE AMBASSADOR is a thrilling drama set in a world of deception, mistrust and betrayal. Academy Award® nominee Pauline Collins stars as the widowed Harriet Smith, the British ambassador to Ireland, one of the country's most coveted – and potentially explosive – Embassy posts. Supported by her commercial attaché and MI-6 operative John Stone, the Ambassador uses her diplomatic skill and common sense to bravely face a sinister and dangerous world far removed from the cocktail parties of Downing Street.

local Scene Beat the heat with a look at MPTv’s great local programs. July offers a chance to explore the people, places, and events in our area. Tilt-a-Whirls, Cowbells, and Beer from local director ron faiola (wisconsin Supper clubs, fish fry night Milwaukee), is a summer tour of Milwaukee area church festivals. The documentary features the rides, music, food and fun at several parishes, including divine Mercy, St. Matthias, St. roman's and the 55th and final festival at St. veronica's. The Arts Page looks back at some of our favorite local artists and artistic showcases from the past year, including the first annual MotoPhotoShow, the Milwaukee repertory Theater's revival of "liberace!", "Partners in Art" Jerry Hirschmann and Michael Paul Thiry's uniquely combined mixed-media flowers, and hyperrealistic life-size figurative sculptor Marc Sijan. Around the Corner with John McGivern features wisconsin communities that provide great nearby vacation spots. In July John visits Bayfield, rhinelander, East Troy and the Milwaukee neighborhoods, Silver city and the upper East Side. ¡Adelante! explores Mexican cinema at the Milwaukee film festival and highlights St.Adalbert School’s “reading under the Stars” after school literacy program. 4th Street Forum on the Road discusses what lessons we can learn here at home to better compete with the manufacturing powerhouses in other countries. Healthful Indian Flavors with Alamelu shows simple ways to cook an all-time Indian favorite garlic and Pepper chicken. Alamelu also prepares Onion and Tomato Salad and cabbage with ginger & coconut Poriyal. Tracks Ahead explains how steam trains made their way back into the Iowa landscape while honoring and preserving chinese rail history. InterChange focuses on relevant and timely issues important to southeastern wisconsin. Outdoor Wisconsin features a look back at some of the most interesting segments of this season. Black Nouveau features a variety of great segments including professional dance troupe “Step Afrika”, the department of Justice report on the issues in ferguson, Missouri, and talks with two women who have helped shape Milwaukee, gwen T. Jackson and Thelma Sias.
