he 4th of July is a happy and festive time as we gather with friends and family to celebrate our nation’s birthday with parades, barbecues, and the traditional Fourth of July fireworks. July is a month of festivals in southeastern Wisconsin, including Gathering on the Green’s annual July weekend of arts entertainment for the entire family. Each summer Gathering on the Green underwrites select programming on MPTV. According to Rob Kos, Executive Director, “We are big believers that Public Television fills a vital role in enriching our lives today. Nowhere else can we find consistent quality programming featuring the performing arts along with a wide array of cultural and educational programs.” For 22 years, Gathering on the Green, a Mequon-based 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization, has presented arts entertainment and built a sense of community through its concerts on one weekend in July. It is an annual summer gathering of music under the stars for all to enjoy – both young and old at Mequon’s Rotary Park. This year’s events are on Friday, July 15, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, July 16, beginning at 2 p.m. Bring a picnic or enjoy some of Milwaukee’s best food trucks at the weekend extravaganza! This year’s entertainment includes Huey Lewis and The News, one of America’s great rock & roll bands, performing their great hits, on Friday night, July 15, at 7:30 p.m. On Saturday afternoon, July 16, at 2:00 p.m., Gathering on the Green celebrates Family Fun Day with rides, games, arts & crafts, and music at the Family & Children’s Village of Gathering on the Green. At 5:30 p.m. The Kids from Wisconsin perform, followed by the Starliner Big Band featuring Jenny Thiel at 7:30 p.m. The evening is capped-off with Gathering on the Green’s Signature Musical Fireworks. Gathering on the Green’s mission includes advancing youth education in addition to presenting exceptional entertainment. Its summer 2016 youth activities include a week-long Summer S.T.E.AM. Youth Program (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Technology) for children ages 8-10. Kids from the Boys & Girls’ Club Davis Center, Children’s Outing Association (COA) Goldin Center, and the suburbs learn new skills through a S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education program that includes arts activities. The program incorporates elements of the Boston Museum of Science Curriculum “Engineering is Elementary” into the outreach activities. MPTV is appreciative and thankful for Gathering on the Green’s support. More information about Gathering on the Green 2016 activities is available at: www.gatheringonthegreen.org Maureen Bradley, Director, Corporate Development and Underwriting

uly 4th is always circled on our calendars as our nation celebrates Independence Day. Whether it be with friends and family at an outdoor barbeque party, or camping out in our community parks to get the best spot for annual fireworks displays, we’ve got that day covered and more with some of the most patriotic programs both locally and nationally produced for public television. But, there’s another date circled on many calendars: November 8th. It’s been on ours for months, and we’re looking forward to that day to vote, having a voice in the decision of who the next President of the United States will be. And, nearly every week of 2016 has been marked with important activity relative to the candidates vying for this position. Since January, PBS has been immersed in campaign coverage, from the Democratic Primary Debate in Milwaukee last February to nightly and weekly coverage of the primary season on The PBS Newshour and Washington Week. This month marks the transition from primaries to the establishment of who our Republican and Democratic presidential candidates will be for Election Day in November. And, in that transition, PBS will provide full coverage of the Republican National Convention
16-17
July 18 – 21 in Cleveland and the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia July 25-28. It is our hope that our coverage of both conventions informs all viewers about each party’s ideology and vision for the future of our nation. Convention coverage doesn’t close our dedication to following the campaign trail to the White House. All PBS current events programs will provide perspective to the Presidential Election from their respective points of view. See our Cover Feature on page 4 for details. From all of us at MPTV, thank you for your vote of confidence in us as a donor to the station. Have a safe and enjoyable Independence Day,

F E AT U R E “PBS Election 2016” Offers a Comprehensive Look at Candidates and Issues; Acclaimed News, Public Affairs, Documentaries and Digital Coverage Enhanced by Cross-Platform Partnership with NPR.
M
PTV will air PBS Election 2016, a comprehensive schedule of news, public affairs, documentary and corresponding digital programming. At the center of this multi-platform initiative is a new strategic partnership with NPR that allows for sharing of news content between the two organizations. As one of the country’s most trusted news sources and a leader in developing content for digital platforms, PBS brings to this year’s election coverage a mix of investigative reports, educational opportunities and stories of interest on the local and national levels. “In this election year, PBS promises viewers extensive, in-depth and thoughtful coverage across all platforms,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager of General Audience Programming for PBS. “Our roster of signature programs, specials and online offerings will deliver fully integrated news and analysis from multiple perspectives.” The new partnership between PBS and NPR will enable the two organizations to share digital, video, and audio content in new ways. As part of this collaboration, PBS will launch a new, designated elections-focused digital destination on PBS.org that will include content from NPR, as well as from PBS' signature news and public affairs programs and local PBS station newsrooms across the country. Likewise, NPR will integrate PBS content into its popular Politics section on NPR.org. PBS and NPR will cross-promote both sites and engage audiences through social media tools. “We have an anxious country seeking to pick a new president. There are few tasks more important this election year than giving the country the news coverage, information and conversation to help make sound choices. NPR and PBS share that mission of producing trusted, thoughtful public service journalism to inform the American public,” said Michael Oreskes, NPR Senior Vice President of News and Editorial Director. “Partnering with PBS and working with our member stations, we will provide a forum for a national conversation about politics that goes from the local grassroots perspective our on-the-ground reporters provide, to analysis and context.” PBS Election 2016 includes a mix of new and returning series, and specials that will follow the election trail from the primary debates to election night and beyond. Coverage will highlight all major political events, conventions and election night returns. PBS NEWSHOUR WEEKEND will feature remote broadcasts from Philadelphia and Cleveland on the weekends leading up to the Democratic and Republican Conventions. In addition, the program will provide regular, in-depth reporting, called “Every
Vote Counts: Examining the People, Places and Issues the Candidates Overlook,” throughout the 2016 campaign. FRONTLINE’s acclaimed series “The Choice” returns this fall with a two-hour film investigating what has shaped the two major-party presidential candidates, where they came from, how they lead and why they want to take on one of the most difficult jobs imaginable. Produced by Michael Kirk (“United States of Secrets,” “League of Denial”), “The Choice 2016” will investigate formative moments in the candidates’ lives, providing in-depth reporting and powerful new insights about the candidates. Additionally, in the run-up to the 2016 election, FRONTLINE, PBS NEWSHOUR and APM’s “Marketplace” will team up to investigate the American economy — from the forces that have shaped it to the lives of the people living in it. The collaboration – sparked by “Marketplace” host Kai Ryssdal’s travels and radio reporting, and funded jointly by PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting – will produce 10 videos to be broadcast on PBS NEWSHOUR and shared on FRONTLINE, PBS NEWSHOUR and “Marketplace” websites and social channels. WASHINGTON WEEK WITH GWEN IFILL features the PBS NEWSHOUR anchor alongside Washington’s top journalists, analyzing key election news stories and their effect on the lives of all Americans. This election season, WASHINGTON WEEK will originate from key election locations with a series of live “road shows” along the campaign trail, including from Cleveland, the host city of the Republican National Convention (July 15); and the following week from Philadelphia, host city of the Democratic National Convention (July 22). In September, WASHINGTON WEEK will originate from the battleground state of Colorado with a live-audience program from the campus of Colorado College in Colorado Springs. AMERICAN EXPERIENCE launches The Presidents, an all-new digital portal showcasing hundreds of assets from the Peabody Award-winning collection of films about our nation’s most important leaders. Films in the collection include“Murder of a President” and biographies of John F. Kennedy, Jr., Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, Lyndon B. Johnson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Harry S. Truman, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, Ulysses S. Grant, Abraham Lincoln and John Adams. The portal will allow viewers to screen films, delve deeper with experts and living witnesses, and examine more than 200 primary source documents. The Presidents explores issues faced during various administrations, including the economy, war, dealing with a crisis, and abuses of power. Throughout 2016, PBS will introduce a slate of new and

returning programs focusing on issues important to the American people. Special programming includes: 16 FOR ’16 , is an American political documentary series that revisits the most compelling stories from past U.S. presidential campaigns to uncover gory details, hidden insights and lessons learned. Subjects include Howard Dean, Sarah Palin, Michael Dukakis, Ross Perot and Gary Hart, among others. The sixteen 30-minute episodes will air weekly leading up to election night. In WILLIE VELASQUEZ: EMPOWERING THE PEOPLE, viewers meet the man who led the Southwest Voter Registration and Education Project and launched 1,000 voter registration drives in 200 cities, paving the way for Latinos to have a voice in government and underscoring the growing power of the Latino vote. POSTCARDS FROM THE GREAT DIVIDE is a new series of nine short films, produced by a diverse mix of filmmakers who present a glimpse into grassroots politics in nine states. Each film focuses on a different topic relevant to the dynamics of voter turnout and partisan choice that will help decide the presidential race. The films will premiere on the PBS NEWSHOUR and be distributed online via PBS.org. GETTING AHEAD is a one-hour primetime special that examines the hotly debated nationwide movement to increase the minimum wage. The documentary follows Tavis Smiley as he
travels to Northern California where increases have been in place for more than a year, and offers a thought-provoking look at the real impact of higher wages on communities, businesses and employees. AMERICA BY THE NUMBERS WITH MARIA HINOJOSA, a one-hour prime-time special that examines the changing demographics in the United States, viewing critical electoral issues through the lens of the new American mainstream and the country’s evolution to a majority-minority nation. PBS also launched Election Central, an online educational resource bank for students and teachers. Created by PBS LearningMedia – the free media-on-demand service from PBS that offers more than 100,000 digital resources for classroom use – and PBS NEWSHOUR, Election Central is designed to provide educators with resources to help drive student engagement around the political process throughout the year, while highlighting videos, activities and interactives available through PBS LearningMedia. Content will be refreshed on a weekly basis or when timely events occur, such as a debate or convention. Other educational components will include student contests and debates, and an interactive map that will allow teachers and students to track the campaign trail of the candidates, provide details on candidates’ views, feature fun facts about the election, and house election-specific news from PBS NEWSHOUR.

A Look Ahead at July and August Programs Featuring Comprehensive Election Coverage, New and Returning Drama Series, and Olympic-Themed Specials Back this summer is the popular Independence Day celebration A CAPITOL FOURTH on July 4. The worldwide attention focused on the 2016 Rio Olympics offers viewers a chance to reflect on the history of that international institution with specials that show different sides of the Olympics story. On August 2, two programs examine the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin, and it’s impact on modern-day Olympics. The first is NAZI GAMES – BERLIN 1936 and then, from AMERICAN EXPERIENCE, “The Boys of ’36,” about the American rowing team that triumphed at the 1936 games. The INDEPENDENT LENS documentary “T-Rex Her Fight for Gold” introduces 17-year old boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields and recounts her rise from Flint, Michigan, to the first gold medal podium for women’s boxing at the 2012 London Olympics. COMING IN AUGUST ON MPTV
T
he PBS summer schedule offers comprehensive election coverage, as well as specially themed programs around the 31st Olympiad in August 2016. Anchored by live broadcasts of the Republican ( July 18-21) and Democratic ( July 25-28) National Convention activities, election-themed programs include an encore presentation of six films from the AMERICAN EXPERIENCE award-winning collection “The Presidents,” August 8-18, and a fresh documentary on America’s most prominent address and historic landmark, THE WHITE HOUSE: INSIDE STORY on July 12. The recently announced an Olympic underdog story in AMERICAN EXPERIENCE “The Boys of ’36,” on August 2, round out additional summer features.
“As the national conversation around elections continues throughout the summer, viewers will get comprehensive coverage and reporting from the Republican and Democratic National Conventions through award-winning news and public affairs programs like PBS NEWSHOUR and PBS NEWSHOUR WEEKEND,” said Beth Hoppe, PBS Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming. “Also this summer, timed with the start of the Olympic games in Rio, we are showcasing new documentaries from AMERICAN EXPERIENCE and INDEPENDENT LENS about athletes who have triumphed over adversity to ultimately win the gold. Rounding out the schedule is a fresh selection of Sunday dramas, and intriguing science specials, engaging viewers in a variety of informational and entertaining programming all summer long.” 10
NAZI GAMES – BERLIN 1936 – See how the Nazis and the IOC turned, to their mutual advantage, a relatively small, elitist sports event into an epic global and mass media spectacle that, despite the IOC’s determined attempts to forget, continues to this day. AMERICAN EXPERIENCE “The Boys of ’36” – Explore the thrilling story of the American rowing team that triumphed at the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany. Inspired by #1 best-seller The Boys in the Boat, the film follows the underdog team that took the nation by storm when they captured gold. INDEPENDENT LENS “T-Rex Her Fight for Gold” – Meet Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, who rose from the streets of Flint, Michigan, and at 17 won the first Olympic gold medal for women’s boxing in 2012. In this coming-of-age story, life outside the ring may be an even tougher fight. KOKO THE GORILLA WHO TALKS – In 1971, Penny Patterson began teaching sign language to a gorilla named Koko, unaware that this relationship would define both their lives. More than 40 years later, the now-famous Koko continues to redraw the line between people and animals. – MASTERPIECE “Inspector Lewis, The Final Season” – Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox return one last time as Inspector Lewis and Inspector Hathaway, investigating new cases of murder and other crimes in the seemingly perfect academic haven of Oxford. AMERICAN EXPERIENCE “The Presidents” (Encore) – In advance of the national election, revisit the lives of six recent presidents, from JFK to George H.W. Bush, in films from the award-winning collection.

F.S. KEY AND THE SONG THAT BUILT AMERICA
F
.S. KEY AND THE SONG THAT BUILT AMERICA celebrates the 200th anniversary of Francis Scott Key's writing of America's national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner." Key, a constitutional lawyer, famously penned the lyrics following the 12-hour bombardment of Ft. McHenry in September 1814. The documentary covers Key's major cases (including the Aaron Burr conspiracy), his vehement opposition to the War of 1812, his enlistment in the militia, his participation in the ill-fated defense of Washington, D.C., and his penchant for poetry and art. 7/2, 10a.m. 36HD

nce labeled a “youth-at-risk,” Matt Rutherford risks it all in a death-defying attempt to be the first person to sail alone and nonstop around North and South America. Professional sailors called him crazy and declared the journey “a suicide mission.” Matt’s childhood was fraught with obstacles. Growing up in an obscure Christian cult, he struggled with learning disabilities that made life excruciating at home and at school.
