he 4th of July is one of the highlights of the summer as we gather with friends and family to celebrate our nation’s birthday with parades, barbecues, and the traditional Fourth of July fireworks. July is also a month of festivals in southeastern Wisconsin, including Gathering on the Green’s annual July weekend of arts entertainment for the entire family. Each spring and summer Gathering on the Green underwrites select programming on Milwaukee PBS. According to Rob Kos, Executive Director, “In an era where quality programming featuring the performing arts is becoming scarce, we are committed to supporting Milwaukee PBS because they have become the place to go to for interesting and informative programs.” For 23 years, Gathering on the Green, a Mequon-based 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, has presented arts entertainment and built a sense of community through its concerts on one weekend in July. It is an annual summer gathering of music under the stars for all to enjoy – both young and old at Mequon’s Rotary Park. This year’s events are on Friday, July 14 at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, July 15, at 7:30 p.m. Bring a picnic or enjoy some of Milwaukee’s best food trucks at the weekend extravaganza! Rotary Park opens each night at 5:00 p.m. This year’s entertainment includes Grammy-award-winning artists Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald performing on Friday night, July 14, at 8 p.m., and 2017 Grammy Award winner Daya performing on Saturday night, July 15, at 7:30 p.m. The distinctive soulful voiced former Doobie Brothers singer, keyboardist, and songwriter, Michael McDonald, takes to the stage with “Takin’ it To the Streets” and “Minute by Minute,” along with his other standards. Kenny Loggins burst on the music scene in the early 1970’s, and over his 40-year career has garnered 12 platinum albums and a pair of Grammys. Friday night Loggins performs such hits as “This is it” “Footloose,” and ”Danger Zone.” On Saturday evening, July 15, at 7:30 p.m. young pop star 2017 Grammy Award winner Daya will perform her hits, “Sit Still, Look Pretty,” and “Hide Away.” Daya took 2016 by storm with Rolling Stone naming her one of their “10 New Artists You Need to Know.” She was #5 on Billboard Magazine’s “21 Under 21,” and “Best New Artist,” by Radio Disney, among others. Also on Saturday night the new all-vocal group, Vocalight, brings to the stage the next generation of vocal music, combining elements from pop, jazz, rock, and electronic dance music. Gathering on the Green’s mission includes advancing youth education in addition to presenting exceptional entertainment. Milwaukee PBS is appreciative and thankful for Gathering on the Green’s support. More information about Gathering on the Green 2017 activities is available at: www.gatheringonthegreen.org Maureen Bradley, Director, Corporate Development and Underwriting bradley1@matc.edu or (414) 297-8008

Our “Summer of Adventure” continues this month with stops that include Canada, Africa, Cuba and Alaska. Check out where you’ll be headed with Milwaukee PBS: Nature’s Great Race follows three iconic animals on three of the world’s most breath-taking wildlife adventures. A Capitol fourth: Behind the Scenes
The Making of a National Institution Executive Producer Jerry Colbert looks back at the evolution of A Capitol Fourth.
E
ach year, more than half a million people join us live on the National Mall for what has become the most spectacular July Fourth celebration in the nation. Nothing could inspire our patriotic fervor more than celebrating America's independence on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. As the national anthem plays, the crowd turns toward the flag, flying over the Capitol, and faces the Statue of Freedom atop the famous dome. Millions more watch the concert on PBS stations around the nation. Producing A Capitol Fourth requires many months of advance planning, writing and coordinating countless details. The Music The partnership between A Capitol Fourth and the National Symphony Orchestra goes back to the very first show. The crowd on-site and the television audience at home always look forward to hearing their favorite patriotic songs performed by one of America's most highly regarded musical ensembles. In particular, the Choral Arts Society of Washington, led by its artistic director Scott Tucker, has become a wonderful addition to the A Capitol Fourth family. Over the years, we have been fortunate to work with many world-renowned conductors, including Mstislav 4
Rostropovich, Henry Mancini, Hugh Wolf, James Conlon, Leonard Slatkin, Erich Kunzel and now, Maestro Jack Everly. All have met the challenge of combining many different American music styles into a single exuberant production. The playing of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, accompanied by live cannons, has become an A Capitol Fourth tradition. Timing the cannons with the fireworks and music requires true precision. The National Symphony Orchestra music librarian cues the United States Army Presidential Salute Battery to fire the cannons at the perfect moment in the score. This is no small feat, considering the complexity of the music and the technical requirements of firing a cannon! The Production The performers in front of the cameras are a thrill to watch, but it’s the talent behind the scenes that makes it all come together. A dedicated crew of more than 400 people returns year after year to produce this one-of-a-kind live broadcast. The production team includes industry veterans who have worked on such prestigious live programs as the Grammy Awards, Academy Awards, Country Music Awards, Primetime Emmy Awards and Tony Awards.

much they enjoy our innovative presentation of this brilliant pyrotechnic display. Coordination among several government entities is required to facilitate such a large undertaking, including the Military District of Washington, National Park Service, Architect of the Capitol and, because of its unique location at the Capitol, three law enforcement agencies – the U.S. Capitol Police, the U.S. Park Police and the Washington Metropolitan Police Department. Over the 48 hours leading up to broadcast, a frenzied pace kicks in, with a musical run-through at the Kennedy Center with Conductor Jack Everly and the National Symphony Orchestra; blocking rehearsals on-site on the West Lawn of the Capitol; one full dress rehearsal the night before the show; and late-night production meetings to tweak the script and make any changes necessary to bring you a seamless and exciting Independence Day celebration. Twenty different cameras are needed for the broadcast to cover the length and breadth of the National Mall and memorials, including cameras placed in the Washington Monument and across the Potomac River in Virginia to capture the entire city landscape illuminated with fireworks. Each year, viewers write in to say how
All the planning, effort and intensity is worth it as the fireworks light up the sky over the Washington Monument in our nation's capital.

What happens in the Alaskan wilderness in late July affects the animals’ survival and well-being for the remainder of the year. With some of largest areas of wilderness left on Earth, Alaska is the best place in the world to see the huge animals and top predators in all their glory. The threenight live presentation also explores the challenges of preserving America’s last frontier, as scientists, filmmakers, photographers and other experts gather there to tell some of the planet’s extraordinary wildlife stories. Over three nights, WILD ALASKA LIVE will visit several locations, including points near Juneau and the Tongass National Forest, where the team will look for black bears and bald eagles; the vast Kenai Fjords National Park, in search of orcas and humpback whales; and the wilderness of Katmai National Park, where brown bears and elusive wolves live and hunt. WILD ALASKA LIVE will also introduce viewers to local experts who explore the relationship between Alaska’s First Peoples and the animals among whom they co-exist.
“WILD ALASKA LIVE is the blueprint for the incredible family trip you’ve always wanted to take,” said Beth Hoppe, Chief Programming Executive and General Manager, General Audience Programming, PBS. “The beauty of America’s most remote state is awe-inspiring and jaw-dropping; it’s the true meaning of wilderness. Nature lovers, adventurers and families alike can follow the action live on TV, online and on their mobile devices throughout the week, to catch every exceptional moment. This immersive event is not to be missed.” “BIG BLUE LIVE was a summer smash in 2015 and I'm delighted that the team behind our BAFTA Award winning series are reuniting for WILD ALASKA LIVE,” said Tom McDonald, BBC Head of Commissioning for Natural History and Specialist Factual. “The series will be the most ambitious live natural history project we've ever commissioned - broadcasting from one of the last truly wild places on earth for what promises to be an unforgettable week of animal encounters.” WILD ALASKA LIVE will use state-of-the-art filming technologies and live reports from the air, by boat and on the rugged Alaskan terrain. The event will be anchored by an on-location team of hosts, including Chris Kratt and Martin Kratt, correspondents, scientists and wildlife experts who will provide insights and perspective during the broadcasts. In addition to the live portions of the programs, PBS and BBC crews will shoot video and b-roll footage in the weeks preceding the live broadcast, to enhance each live broadcast by telling the bigger stories of each unique species. On PBS digital platforms and on social media, viewers can explore the Alaskan wilderness as events take place during the week, on-air and off. Inspired by stunning images, and through video and interactive games, audiences can dive deeper into the region’s environmental challenges and its conservation success stories. On Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, viewers will get behind-thescenes looks at the show’s massive production each broadcast night. All three broadcast episodes will live-stream simultaneously on PBS.org and will be simulcast on the new PBS KIDS 24/7 channel and live stream, which is provided by member stations across the country on TV and streaming on digital platforms.

CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD: MUSICALS
S
ome of the most iconic images ever recorded on film from five classic Hollywood musicals are presented. "The Wizard of Oz," "Yankee Doodle Dandy," "Singin' in the Rain," "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers," and "Viva Las Vegas" journey across the Golden Age of movie musicals, spanning the days from the Great Depression all the way to the Civil Rights Movement. With foot-stomping dance numbers, technicolor fantasy worlds, and soaring ballads sung by some of the world's most beloved stars, these movies still inspire us to laugh, love and dream--even when times are tough.
