g{x ]tÇx UÜtwÄxç cxàà|à YÉâÇwtà|ÉÇ Every Monday through Friday, children in the greater Milwaukee community
enjoy fun, engaging, quality children’s programming because of the generous commitment of The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation. Jane Bradley Pettit was committed to improve the lives of all children, from all socio-economic walks of life. Because of her legacy, Milwaukee Public Television and the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation continue to offer high-quality programming that both children and their parents look forward to watching.
Shows such as Sesame Street, Curious George, Sid The Science Kid, Martha Speaks, and others engage and stimulate children’s visual imagination and mental development. Sesame Street, now in its 44th year, and our other acclaimed PBS Kids shows are created specifically to help bridge the literacy gap, including reading skills, language development, and math skills. PBS Kids programs also model important life lessons such as empathy, generosity, and courtesy. Public television programming is an effective teacher. Currently less than 10% of students in Wisconsin score at an advanced reading level, and 82% of Milwaukee Public Schools kids live in poverty, which affects their learning ability. Therefore, it is imperative that Milwaukee Public Television continue our mission, to carry programming that encourages and inspires children to read and learn. “The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation has been a long-time supporter of MPTV’s children’s programming. Jane Bradley Pettit believed it was important to provide learning opportunities for children of all ages. MPTV has been an excellent partner in this endeavor. The Foundation is pleased to continue the partnership that began with Ms. Pettit’s vision.” The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation’s generous gift is one of the primary sources of funding for our award-winning educational children’s programming on Milwaukee Public Television. MPTV is proud of this collaboration with the Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation because we share similar goals – to strengthen local communities by supporting the positive development of all children. Jane Bradley Pettit’s legacy of commitment to children’s educational development continues to live on in her commitment to Milwaukee Public Television’s children’s literacy programming. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV. Contact Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu and (414) 297-8008.

MPTV V-ME, WORLD & CREATE LISTINGS
As we wrap up the 2012-13 fiscal year at Milwaukee Public Television, we want to take a moment once again to express our sincere appreciation for your support. Whether you made a donation during one of our on-air membership drives, are a long-time sustaining partner of the station, provided underwriting through your corporation or foundation, participated in our vehicle donation program, included MPTV in a bequest, or contributed in some other way, you are the reason public television is flourishing today, and we are grateful. For over half a century, Channels 10&36 have been licensed to Milwaukee Area Technical College. As a result, your contribution to the station is administered by MPTV’s Development Department, is deposited in the MATC Foundation’s MPTV Fund, and is earmarked solely for MPTV programming and services. The MATC Foundation is a recognized 501(c)(3) organization, which ensures the greatest tax benefits for you from the state of Wisconsin and the IRS. In fact, your contribution to the MPTV Fund is tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law. Great programs like DOWNTON ABBEY, SESAME STREET, AROUND THE CORNER WITH JOHN McGIVERN, and ANTIQUES ROADSHOW are able to be produced and broadcast as a result of your

contribution and those of over 30,000 other members in southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. When you hear that MPTV is a “community supported” effort, you can take pride in the fact that you are one of those who has chosen to give. We have plans for a number of outstanding new productions and initiatives this coming year, plus the return of many of your favorite series. We encourage you to keep watching and to be as generous as you can when it is time to renew your membership. We also welcome your comments, of course: feel free to call, write, or e-mail at any time. Once again, on behalf of all of us at MPTV, and on behalf of an entire community that benefits from your generosity, please accept our deep and sincere appreciation for your support this year.

F E AT U R E A CAPITOL FOURTH 2013 CHORUS AND MILITARY GROUP BIOGRAPHIES
The Choral Arts Society of Washington The Choral Arts Society of Washington is a preeminent choral organization in the United States. Founded in 1965 by Norman Scribner, Artistic Director Emeritus, Choral Arts, now completing its 48th season, welcomes Scott Tucker as the new Artistic Director. Tucker comes to the organization from Cornell University and is a perfect complement to Choral Arts, a symphonic chorus of over 170 professional-caliber volunteer singers, respected for its excellence in performing classical and contemporary repertoire through diverse channels. Choral Arts’ programs include an annual concert series presented at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and other reputable venues in the DC metropolitan area, domestic and international tours, recordings, and other broadcast and digital media appearances. In a city known for the choral music, Choral Arts stands out as a leader among its peers, earning awards, not only for its artistic excellence, but its administrative leadership and services to the community. Choral Arts has always been, and continues to be, deeply rooted within the DC community and beyond.
The Military District of Washington (MDW) The Military District of Washington works with Capital Concerts in coordinating the Department of Defense participation of the Premier Service Bands and Service Honor Guards.
United States Army Presidential Salute Battery The 3rd U.S. Infantry Salute Guns Platoon is responsible for rendering honors to visiting foreign dignitaries and heads of state at the White House, the Pentagon and elsewhere in the Washington D.C., area. The platoon also fires the final salutes during many funerals at Arlington National Cemetery. The guns platoon is the only unit of its kind in the Army, and its busy schedule includes more than 300 ceremonies each year.
The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets are the official fanfare ensemble for the President of the United States. Founded in 1959 and patterned after traditional British “fanfare” trumpet ensembles, The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets were formed to add splendor to official military ceremonies. A performing element of The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” in Washington, DC, the ensemble has performed for countless events of national and international significance. Their first official performance welcomed Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II to Chicago for the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway and in the ensuing years they performed for an illustrious array of presidents, prime ministers, and royalty at the White House and abroad. Notable events include 14 presidential inaugurals, the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations, and the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI at the White House in April of 2008. In addition to official military duties, the Herald Trumpets have performed in the opening ceremonies for the Winter and Summer Olympic Games. Also, the ensemble has performed at nationally and internationally 4
televised events such as Super Bowl XXXIX, The Kennedy Center Honors, the relighting of the Statue of Liberty, and annual holiday celebrations, “A Capitol Fourth,” “Christmas in Washington,” and “The National Memorial Day Concert.” The U.S. Army Herald Trumpets have been featured with orchestras from around the world, including the National Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Pops, the Cincinnati Pops, the Saint Louis Symphony, and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. The Herald Trumpets have performed with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Orchestra at Temple Square in Salt Lake City.
The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band In June of 1943, The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” was ordered overseas to perform for American fighting Soldiers and Allies in Europe. During that two-year overseas tour, a representative element known as the “auxiliary band” was established to fulfill the diplomatic and military ceremonial needs in the nation’s capital. Eventually that group was renamed The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band. Since its original organization, The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band has grown to meet a wide range of commitments. While the Ceremonial Band’s primary mission is to support over 2,000 military funerals each year in Arlington National Cemetery, the band performs other missions of national and international importance. These missions include wreath laying ceremonies by heads of state and other foreign dignitaries at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, monthly retirement parades, special reviews, and arrival and departure honors for foreign dignitaries at the White House and Pentagon. Recent major events include 2009 Presidential Inaugural festivities, and nationally televised PBS broadcasts of the “National Memorial Day Concert” and “A Capitol Fourth” with the National Symphony Orchestra. The 70 musicians of The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band come from some of the most prestigious music conservatories and universities in the country. Beyond their ceremonial roles, members of The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band routinely display their versatility and superb musicianship while performing with other elements of The U.S. Army Band, in chamber group performances, on recital programs, and as soloists for summer concerts. Commitments performed by The U.S. Army Ceremonial Band are some of the most visible missions performed by The United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own.”

PBS & MPTV FALL SEASON OFFERS AN ARRAY OF NEW SERIES, SPECIALS AND RETURNING FAVORITES – Season Highlights Include Commemoration of President Kennedy, Heritage Specials, PBS Arts and Showcase of Independent Film –
PBS and MPTV announced their fall primetime line-up featuring a strong roster of wide-ranging programs. New highlights of the season include a series of specials commemorating the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s death; programs exploring American heritage from diverse viewpoints; the first PBS Independent Film Showcase; and captivating new dramas. Fall also marks the second PBS Arts Fall Festival, as well as the return (and a premiere) of acclaimed science programs. PBS and MPTV pay tribute to President Kennedy on the eve of the 50th anniversary of his assassination with intriguing new takes on the president’s life and death, anchored by “JFK,” a new four-hour, two-part special from AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. A new episode from the science series NOVA, the history-focused SECRETS OF THE DEAD and other specials to be announced complete this special anniversary coverage. A collection of programs focuses on the diversity of Americans’ ancestries and cultures, including the new unscripted, interactive series GENEALOGY ROADSHOW, which uses history and science to connect participants nationwide to their individual and family histories; LATINO AMERICANS, the first major documentary series for television to chronicle the rich and varied history of Latinos across 500 years; and from executive producer — and Harvard scholar — Henry Louis Gates, Jr. THE AFRICAN AMERICANS: MANY RIVERS TO CROSS, which chronicles the full sweep of black history in the United States. The arts remain a staple of PBS programming, with the PBS Arts Fall Festival returning for a seven-week run celebrating music and Broadway classics, including NASHVILLE 2.0, a tribute to legendary country stars, a star-studded version of Stephen Sondheim’s musical Company and GREAT PERFORMANCES “Barbra
Streisand: Back to Brooklyn,” the superstar’s first Brooklyn concert since her childhood years. The PBS Independent Film Showcase airs this fall with documentaries from INDEPENDENT LENS and POV. GREAT PERFORMANCES premieres its ambitious four-part miniseries “The Hollow Crown,” combining Shakespeare’s Richard II, Henry IV (Parts I & II) and Henry V into a single chronological narrative. PBS and MPTV continues to stake out Sunday nights with enthralling dramas from MASTERPIECE, including “Foyle’s War, Series VII” for MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! and “The Paradise,” an adaptation of the beloved French novel by Emile Zola. Science remains strong this fall, delving into how things are made wilder, faster, colder and safer with the new multi-part NOVA series, “Making Stuff With David Pogue,” and the new four-part series RAW TO READY (w.t.), which takes viewers inside factories to learn how basic ingredients are transformed into powerhouse machines. lthorp, childhood home and final resting place of Princess Diana, is currently the home of Diana’s brother, Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer. Nineteen generations of Spencers have presided over this grand estate for more than 500 years. The Spencer dynasty has produced politicians, dukes and duchesses and will one day furnish Britain with a king: Diana’s son, Prince William. Noted for their generosity, the Spencers once came to the rescue of a distant cousin fallen on hard times: the great-great-greatgrandfather of George Washington.

SECRETS OF HIGHCLERE CASTLE
I
t may be more famous now than any time in its 1,300-year history as the setting of “Downton Abbey,” but England’s Highclere Castle has its own stories to tell. In its heyday, Highclere was the social epicenter of Edwardian England. See how all the inhabitants of Highclere lived, from the aristocrats who enjoyed a life of luxury to the army of servants toiling “below stairs.” Also find out how the current inhabitants, Lord and Lady Carnarvon, spend their $1 million in annual upkeep funds and what life in a fairytale castle is like today. 7/21, 7p.m. 10HD

n its 500-year history, Chatsworth has been home to some notable inhabitants, among them the 5th Duke of Devonshire, his wife, Lady Georgiana Spencer, and Lady Elizabeth Foster, who lived together in a ménage à trois. King Edward VII enjoyed shooting parties on the estate and was often entertained by Duchess Louisa, one of Britain’s foremost political hostesses. Billy Cavendish, heir of the 10th Duke of Devonshire, wooed and wed Kathleen Kennedy, the sister of future U.S. president John F Kennedy. 7/14, 7p.m. 10HD

rom the courtroom to the living room (thanks to the hit television series CSI), forensic science is king. Expertise on fingerprints, ballistics and bite mark analysis are routinely called on to solve the most difficult criminal cases – and to put the guilty behind bars. But how reliable is the science behind forensics? A FRONTLINE investigation finds serious flaws in some of the best-known tools of forensic science and wide inconsistencies in how forensic evidence is presented in the courtroom.

TWO MPTV PRODUCTIONS
WON FIRST PLACE AT THE WBA AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE
Meet Debra Kunath
D eb Kunath has been a part of MATC and MPTV for so long, she’s almost an institution herself! She began
T wo MPTV productions took top honors at the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Awards Gala on May 4, 2013. RETURN TO PEARL and FIELD OF HONOR both won first place in their categories. RETURN TO PEARL was named first place in the category of Large Market Television Series/Documentary. This onehour documentary chronicles 19 Wisconsin World War II veterans’ return trip to Pearl Harbor. Host Mark Siegrist traveled with veterans who were stationed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the day the Japanese air force attacked this naval base. These Old Glory Honor Flight veterans returned to Pearl Harbor in June 2012 and for many, it was the first time they shared their memories, stories, thoughts and feelings about this unforgettable event. FIELD OF HONOR won first place in the category of Large Market Television Specialty Programming. In August 2012, thousands of World War II veterans from Wisconsin were honored at Miller Park and MPTV covered this spectacular event, both inside and outside the stadium. The program featured veterans discussing the impact of the war on their lives, along with footage from honor flights to the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. As the Senior Producer of RETURN TO PEARL and the Producer of FIELD OF HONOR, Everett Marshburn accepted the awards at the event. Everett joined MPTV in 2006 and has produced the last six seasons of BLACK NOUVEAU. He has also produced a number of documentaries and specials at MPTV including FREEDOM WALKERS FOR MILWAUKEE, JOBS, THIS LITTLE LIGHT OF MINE and STORIES FROM THE HOMEFRONT: THE WAR IN WISCONSIN.
working at MATC in 1980 in the counseling center as part of the secretarial staff. Two years later, she transferred to the Dean’s Office in the Industrial and Technical Division of the school where she spent 9 years. Finally in 1991, Deb joined MPTV’s Community Relations department as an assistant. The same year, she also became an MATC student herself when she enrolled in the Fashion Marketing program. Along with providing administrative support to the Community Relations department, Deb has spent the last 22 years assisting with the department’s special events, such as the Clifford Book Drive, Mr. Rogers Sweater Drive, Mittens and More, and the many community workshops MPTV hosts throughout the year. These special projects have been Deb’s favorite part of working in Community Relations. “I like the challenges that come along with new projects that pop up in Community Relations. This year, I’ve really enjoyed helping out with the Next Avenue Community Conversation events, and I also really like working on the Community Cinemas that run from September to May,” said Deb. Deb received her degree in Fashion Marketing in 2001, and has used this degree in her passion outside of MPTV. She is an accomplished seamstress, winning numerous awards at local competitions. In fact, throughout the years Deb has won a ribbon in every single adult sewing category in the Wisconsin State Fair’s Textile and Craft competition. Deb has “woven” together her two interests in MPTV and sewing. As a member of the American Sewing Guild, Deb has gotten the group involved in MPTV’s “Mittens and More” mitten drive to help children in need. She also sewed the costumes for the Teletubbies and Clifford special events. Deb says the reason she has had such a long tenure at MATC and MPTV is the people. “I love public television, and I strongly believe in education. But what has made the last 33 years so enjoyable has been the people I have had the fortune to work with.” Deb lives in New Berlin with her husband Chris, to whom she has been married for 30 years. 23

wo-and-a-half millennia ago, a new religion was born in northern India, generated from the ideas of a single man, the Buddha, a mysterious Indian sage who famously gained enlightenment while he sat under a large, shapely fig tree. The Buddha never claimed to be God or his emissary on earth. He said only that he was a human being who, in a world of unavoidable pain and suffering, had found a kind of serenity that others could find, too. This documentary tells the story of his life, a journey especially relevant in our own bewildering times of violent change and spiritual confusion. 7/23, 7p.m. 10HD

uring World War II, alarmed by rumors about advanced rockets and missiles, Allied intelligence recruited a team of brilliant minds from British universities and Hollywood studios to a country house near London. Here, they pored over millions of air photos shot at great risk over German territory. Peering at the photos through 3D stereoscopes, the team spotted telltale clues that revealed hidden Nazi rocket bases. With 3D graphics that recreate exactly what the photo spies saw, NOVA tells the suspenseful, previously untold story of air photo intelligence. 7/24, 8p.m. 10HD

THATCHER: A MEMOIR
T
HATCHER: A MEMOIR is a moving documentary about Britain's first and only female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. A controversial figure whose right-wing politics, economic liberalization and bold social changes earned her the moniker "Iron Lady," Thatcher was loved and hated — often at the same time. Through interviews with some of her closest colleagues, the next generation of politicians she inspired, and those who opposed her all through her premiership, viewers get a closer look at the remarkable and effective politician that left an indelible mark on the U.K.

xplore autism from the point of view of autistic people themselves. Four-year-old Violet, teenaged Nicholas and adult Paula occupy different positions on the autism spectrum, but they are all at pivotal moments in their lives. How they and the people around them work out their perceptual and behavioral differences becomes a remarkable reflection of the “neurotypical” world — the world of the non-autistic — revealing inventive adaptations on each side and an emerging critique of both what it means to be normal and what it means to be human.
