uly is a festive and exciting time as we gather with family and friends to celebrate our nation’s 238th birthday – with parades, barbecues, and the Fourth of July fireworks. We would like to recognize the Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation, for its long-time support of patriotic programming on MPTV, making it possible for the station to offer programs that celebrate our nation’s heritage and legacy. This month, the Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation is an underwriting supporter of A Capitol Fourth and the UW Varsity Marching Band Concert. A Capitol Fourth, America’s annual Independence Day concert celebration extravaganza, held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, can be seen on MPTV on July 4th at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Channel 10. The concert, hosted by Tom Bergeron, features the National Symphony Orchestra, the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets, the U.S. Army Ceremonial Band, and performances from many of our nation’s finest musical artists, including Patti LaBelle, Frankie Valli, former Doobie Brothers singer Michael McDonald, and Tony Award-winning singer Kelli O’Hara. The concert is followed by the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation. That same evening, the UW Varsity Marching Band Concert can be seen at 8:30 p.m. on Channel 10, with a repeat airing on July 5, at 9:00 p.m. on Channel 36. The Dale R. & Ruth L. Michels Family Foundation also underwrites the PBS award-winning series, American Experience, television’s longest-running, most watched history series. Henry Ford: American Experience, chronicles Henry Ford, the Model T inventor, who brought the assembly line process to American manufacturing. It airs on July 5, at 9 a.m. on Channel 36. The following week, Crash of 1929: American Experience, about the collapse of the U.S. stock market on October 29, 1929, airs on Saturday, July 5, at 10:30 p.m. on Channel 36 and Saturday, July 12, at 9 a.m. on Channel 36. The Abolitionists: American Experience airs on Sunday, July 27, at 6 a.m. on Channel 36. “The Dale R. & Ruth L. And, with family reunions, summer cook outs and so many places to explore and play, MPTV has just the right mix of educational programming and resources to keep kids sharp and ready for the new school year ahead. This summer, PBS KIDS provides free resources on-air, on digital platforms and in communities to help bridge the summer learning gap. PBS KIDS has developed a new summer schedule, as well as a variety of digital resources and community activities in partnership with to keep families learning and exploring all summer long. “Research shows that children experience significant learning loss when they do not participate in educational activities during the summer months, and that loss is even greater among children in low-income communities,” said Lesli Rotenberg, General Manager, Children’s Programming, PBS. “PBS KIDS and our stations in communities across the country are working with partners to help parents find free resources and activities to combat the summer slump.” On-air Programming Double Your Fun, Double Your Learning: In June, PBS KIDS rolled out a new weekday schedule on-air, featuring back-to-back episodes of family favorites WILD KRATTS, CURIOUS GEORGE, DANIEL TIGER’S NEIGHBORHOOD, DINOSAUR TRAIN and ARTHUR throughout the day. The new schedule promises families double the fun and double the learning with double episodes. Check out the daytime schedules on page 16 to learn more. his July 4th, America’s national Independence Day celebration will kick off the festivities for our country’s 238th birthday with an all-star salute led by our country’s favorite host, two-time Emmy Award-winning television personality Tom Bergeron (“Dancing With the Stars”). Broadcast live on PBS from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, the event will feature performances by Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Frankie Valli; Grammy Award-winning music legend Patti LaBelle; multiplatinum recording artist and actress Jordin Sparks; five-time Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Michael McDonald; country music superstar Sara Evans; singer-songwriter Kendall Schmidt from “Big Time Rush” and “Heffron Drive”; and five-time Tony Award nominee and Broadway star Kelli O’Hara; with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of top pops conductor Jack Everly. In celebration of the 200th anniversary of our national anthem, five-time Academy Award-winning composer John Williams will debut a special arrangement for orchestra and chorus of the “Star Spangled Banner” with the National Symphony Orchestra, The Joint Armed Forces Chorus, the Choral Arts Society of Washington and the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets. The 34th annual broadcast of A CAPITOL FOURTH airs on Channel 10 Friday, July 4, 7:00-8:30 p.m. before a concert audience of hundreds of thousands, millions more at home, as well as to our troops serving around the world on the American Forces 4

Network. The program can also be heard live in stereo over NPR member stations nationwide. With twenty cameras positioned around the city, including the U.S. Capitol, the White House and the Washington Monument, viewers are front and center for the greatest display of fireworks anywhere in the nation during this top-rated extravaganza. Capping off the show will be a rousing rendition of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture,” complete with live cannon fire provided by the United States Army Presidential Salute Battery, an audience favorite and A CAPITOL FOURTH tradition. Also participating in the event will be the U.S. Army Ceremonial Band, members of the Armed Forces carrying the state and territorial flags and the Armed Forces Color Guard provided by the Military District of Washington, DC.

In April, 41 MPTV supporters took a unique trip to England to explore the city of London, visit past and current royal residences, tour the BBC studios and sip some afternoon tea. Ultimately, our group traveled to visit Highclere Castle, also known as Downton Abbey. Guests toured areas of the estate that included the bedrooms of Lady Edith and Lady Grantham, The Saloon, State Dining Room and Library, all prominent sets for the exciting period drama. While visiting the location of Mrs. Crawley’s home, we even stumbled upon some external shots being filmed for the upcoming Season 5! MPTV extends a very special thank you to all of our guests who traveled with us, and to Holiday Vacations who provided an exceptionally exciting itinerary enjoyed by all. What’s Cooking This Summer with Next Avenue? Second chances, second careers, new beginnings, July’s Next Avenue Community Conversations explores that and more. Join MPTV on July 22 at HeartLove Place Ministries to discover how baby boomers can continue to lead vital, engaged lives. This live and web streaming event features Alamelu Vairavan, host of MPTV’s Healthful Indian Flavors with Alamelu. She discusses how her love for cooking lead her to become a television show host and cookbook author after a career in healthcare. HeartLove Place Ministries Culinary Arts Program Director Andrew Niedercorn explains how his program offers second chances to people looking for new careers. HeartLove Place offers a 20-week culinary arts and job readiness program for adults 18 and older. The ProStart Program was developed by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) and trains and prepares participants to obtain entry-level careers in the food service and hospitality industry. Both the event and live web streaming begin at 6:00 pm. The event takes place at HeartLove Place Ministries, 3229 N. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, Milwaukee, WI 53212. Smoochy Dog Earns a Badge MPTV has some talented staff members and two of them have collaborated on a children’s book featuring Milwaukee Locations Special Program Producer and Next Avenue Community Conversations Host, Mark Siegrist and Thay Yang, Creative Services Manager. Siegrist says that writing is in his blood. “My father, Robert Siegrist, was a journalist and a writer. He used to talk a lot about the joy of character development. When I met Smoochy, he knocked me through the door to say hello. I realized then he was a character worthy of a story.” Mark said a character in the story is based on MPTV Black Nouveau Producer Liddie Collins-Siegrist and that Liddie and her dog Smoochy inspired the story. Yang, whose work is seen on-air on MPTV and on our website at mptv.org, said working on the book was a great experience for him. “I always enjoyed reading books to my daughter and I was inspired by her interest in the illustrations. By illustrating this book, I hope that someday a father or mother will have those same precious moments with their kids.”

MPTV Viewers Service Volunteers support the television station in a variety of ways. These activities include answering calls and voicemail messages from our viewers, email, filing, simple project related activities for special events, and more. We have space for up to 2 people per shift. Monday 8:30–Noon Wednesday Noon – 4:00 Fridays 8:30 – Noon

Tuesday 8:30 – Noon Thursday 8:30 – Noon

Training will be provided on both the telephone and email systems at MPTV. Parking along with snacks and beverages is free for all volunteers. These are great opportunities for college students looking for customer service experience and retirees. Special Event Research The special event department is seeking a Student Intern or volunteer interested in learning about events and doing research. The work would be done downtown at the TV Station. Parking is provided and hours are flexible.
