T

his month we would like to recognize Goodwill as one of the production underwriting sponsors of Around the Corner with John McGivern, Season 4. This delightful and popular program featured 13 Wisconsin communities, plus a one-hour program featuring local historian John Gurda, talking about Wisconsin’s historical treasures and facts. Around the Corner with John McGivern airs on Thursday evenings, at 7 p.m. on Channel 10 and Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. on Channel 36. It will be repeated over the summer at its usual broadcast time. Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin, Inc., is the largest of more than 165 Goodwill organizations in the world and has been providing services since 1919. Goodwill serves over thirteen full or partial counties in southeastern Wisconsin, including Waukesha, Ozaukee, Washington, Racine, Kenosha, and Walworth counties. It takes pride in its mission of providing training, employment, and supportive services for people with disabilities or disadvantages, chronically unemployed and dislocated workers. Goodwill also provides services for seniors, including day programs and homedelivered meals. In addition, Goodwill provides packaging, assembly, inspection, light manufacturing, and document destruction services. Goodwill Talent Bridge provides recruiting, staffing and placement services for area businesses. Goodwill Store & Donation Centers serve as a resource for people to donate gently used clothing and household items, enabling many in the community to be able to purchase low-cost quality clothing and household goods. According to Pat Boelter, Chief Marketing Officer of Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin, “Goodwill supports MPTV because our goals are similar – to strengthen local communities by empowering the people who live and work right here in our neighborhood. Sponsoring a show like Around the Corner with John McGivern is just a natural fit for an organization like Goodwill, which has an established presence and plays a vital role in the very communities that John highlights.” MPTV is most appreciative of the underwriting support of Goodwill Industries of Southeastern Wisconsin. Their commitment and support of programs like Around the Corner with John McGivern, Season 4, enables MPTV to continue to provide quality, informative and entertaining programs to our MPTV viewers. Find out more about how your organization can become an underwriter and be seen on MPTV. Contract Maureen Bradley at: bradley1@matc.edu and (414) 297-8008.

T

he phrase “year end” means different things to different people. Of course, for most, it’s in reference to that time in December when we look toward new things and a fresh start in our lives. In the general television world, it’s a sign of program series that are concluding for the season. Here at MPTV, there’s a third reference: the end of a fiscal year. June 30th marks the end of a full year of operations at the station that have been nothing less than stellar, thanks to the support of you. It’s been a year of great opportunity for community-minded individuals to show critical support for public media throughout all of Wisconsin. With national threats to the funding for public media and the proposed state budget cuts of the educational services public broadcasting provides, you’ve rallied with us to demonstrate the value and need of this commercial-free service. From a financial perspective, we’ve seen growth in the number of individuals who are supporting MPTV once again by rejoining as contributors, and also in the manner which donors are supporting the station. Last month we shared with you that our Sustaining Partner program is becoming a significant choice for how donors support MPTV. In fact, the number of Sustaining Partners to MPTV has grown by 47% this year. Support from area corporations and foundations have provided the funds for us to embark on several community initiatives that speak to important matters in the communities we share. Because of that support, station staff and volunteers had direct interactions with more than 12,000 individuals who participated in moderated panel discussions around 180 Days: A Year Inside an American High School and Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies and the Next Avenue Community Conversations series to our

Around the Corner with John McGivern preview parties and community screenings around Downton Abbey, Milwaukee: A City Built on Water and Storia Italiana: Milwaukee and so much more. To ensure we hit targeted funding goals, we’ll kick off this month with special programming that explores the worlds of science, history, nature, public affairs and pure entertainment and provides viewers with the opportunity to donate to the station. This final fundraising campaign of the year is significant for the station to secure the funds to kick off the exciting new year on July 1st with exciting summer shows for all to enjoy. The momentum is strong for this year to be one of our most successful for highcaliber programming, dynamic community outreach and also for the support of viewers like you to keep funding for MPTV strong. Thank you for being a part of Milwaukee Public Television.

ince their last PBS special two years ago, The Tenors — Remigio Pereira, Victor Micallef, Fraser Walters and Clifton Murray — have performed at The White House, Buckingham Palace and in hundreds of sold-out concerts around the world. Now they’re back with a new album and are ready to share it with the world in a television special taped at Caesars Windsor Colosseum before a live audience of over 4,000 fans. THE TENORS – UNDER ONE SKY is part of special programming premiering on PBS stations this month. Under One Sky is a masterwork delivering the group’s signature blend of classical and contemporary pop, a sound that developed from their backgrounds: two members are classically trained opera singers and two are from the world of pop and stage music.

The Tenors have created new arrangements for some of the world’s most beloved songs, including Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven,” Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me,” and Queen’s “Who Wants to Live Forever.” They also perform some of their original cowritten compositions as well as their powerful versions of the classics “Besame Mucho” and “Granada.” The result is a concert of powerful voices, angelic harmonies and world-class arrangements. “This music is our most exciting and most diverse we’ve recorded to date,” said The Tenors. “We are so thrilled to be sharing this with the world!”

4

THE TENORS – UNDER ONE SKY features these performances: • “Besame Mucho” • “A New Day’s Begun” • “How Great Thou Art” • “Nada Mais” • “Who Wants to Live Forever” • “Con Te Partiro” • “My Father’s Son” • “Make You Feel My Love” • “Granada” • “Angels Calling” • “You Are So Beautiful” • “Something in the Way She Moves” • “Love Will Never End” • “Under One Sky” • “Lean on Me” PBS special programming invites viewers to experience the worlds of science, history, nature and public affairs; hear diverse viewpoints; and take front-row seats to world-class drama and performances. Viewer contributions are an important source of funding, making PBS programs possible. PBS and public television stations offer all Americans from every walk of life the opportunity to explore new ideas and new worlds through television and online content.

MASTERPIECE MYSTERY: GRANTCHESTER

S

et in the English countryside’s most idyllic village, Grantchester follows two unlikely allies as they solve a series of cases that reveal the dark side of early 1950s England. Handsome, young vicar Sidney Chambers shares his spiritual duties with a love of jazz, complicated relationships with women, and an enthusiasm for amateur sleuthing. When the concern of a parishioner compels him to dig deeper into a grisly suicide, he gets on the nerve of a tired, local law enforcement officer— Inspector Geordie Keating.

MASTERPIECE’s

Poldark Returns! A

lmost 40 years ago Captain Ross Poldark galloped across the TV screens of millions of PBS viewers, vexing villains and winning female hearts in one of MASTERPIECE’s earliest hit series, Poldark. Now the gallant captain rides again, allowing a new generation to delight in the exploits of an unconventional romantic hero.

Aidan Turner (The Hobbit) stars as Ross Poldark, a redcoat who returns to Cornwall after the American Revolutionary War to discover that his father is dead, his lands are ruined, and his true love is about to marry his first cousin. Also starring is Eleanor Tomlinson (Death Comes to Pemberley) as the fiery servant Demelza, a strong-willed miner’s daughter who runs away from home and finds refuge in Poldark’s enlightened household. In a special appearance, Robin Ellis, who starred as Ross Poldark in MASTERPIECE’s original adaptation, plays Reverend Halse, the village’s sin-obsessed parson.

Poldark is based on a beloved series of novels by Winston Graham. The first, Ross Poldark, was published in 1945; the last, Bella Poldark, appeared in 2002, the year before Graham’s death. All twelve are subtitled A Novel of Cornwall and trace the fortunes of a landed, mine-owning family in windswept Cornwall. The new Poldark airs in eight exciting episodes starting June 19th on MASTERPIECE on MPTV Channel 10.

ent to the tiny island of Saint-Marie to solve a mysterious murder, Detective Inspector Richard Poole is a total fish out of water. A quintessentially British cop, he would much prefer the London drizzle and a freshly pressed shirt to blue seas, sparkling sands and gorgeous tropical weather. This warm, light-hearted detective series takes place against a stunning Caribbean island backdrop - as far away from the grey skies of London as you could possibly get. What Richard finds is a ramshackle station and a very different type of policing.
