Letter from
Bohdan Zachary
I’d like to own up to a mistake we made. Milwaukee
PBS tried something different; we introduced a smaller size of “Fine Tuning”. The critiques began as soon as the magazine arrived in homes. Milwaukee PBS heard you loud and clear: you missed the larger sized format, you wanted more program information and a schedule grid that was easier to read and to highlight your favorite ‘must watch’ programs. We heard you and we took your comments very seriously. We hope you will enjoy “Fine Tuning”, version 2. Please let us know what you think. To say it’s been busy at 1036 N. 8th Street is an understatement. The Milwaukee PBS team successfully concluded the 50th Great TV Auction in an updated format and in a new (but temporary) location on the station’s two soundstages. Thousands of viewers 2
enjoyed our golden anniversary edition of the annual TV Auction. Winning bidders discovered the MATC Walkers Square building, where we housed pick-upand-pay for the Great TV Auction. Milwaukee PBS staff, volunteers and numerous on-air hosts donated countless hours to make the two weekend production a success. A big thank you also goes to everyone who donated items as well as the underwriters who helped make the event possible. In coming months we’ll share details about the 2019 Great TV Auction, which will move into two floors in MATC’s historic Foundation Hall building on the downtown campus. Those two floors are currently under construction and by fall we will have the Great TV Auction moved into its new home. In the meantime, as you travel throughout our beautiful state keep your eye out for John McGivern and his team. They’re out on the road taping the next 12 episodes of Around the Corner with John McGivern™. As always we welcome your comments, critique, and ideas about stories we should cover. Feel free to write me at zacharyb@matc.edu or call me at (414)297-7661.

FLEETWOOD MAC T HE DANCE
Premieres June 2nd at 8:30 on Channel 10
I n 1997, the members of Fleetwood Mac —
Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, John McVie and Stevie Nicks — reunited to commemorate the anniversary of their phenomenally successful album Rumours. Filmed over three nights in an intimate setting at a sound stage in Los Angeles, the band performed songs that have since become among the best known in rock history, including “Don’t Stop,” “The Chain,” “Go Your Own Way,” “Dreams” and “You Make Loving Fun” as well as other favorites such as “Rhiannon,” “Say You Love Me,” “Sara” and “Tusk.” Fleetwood Mac originally formed as a blues band in 1967, but came to worldwide prominence in 1975 with their album Fleetwood Mac. With the release of Rumours in 1977, the group achieved unparalleled success both critically and commercially. Rumours became one of the best-selling albums of all-time, remaining at #1 on the Billboard album charts for 31 consecutive weeks and receiving a Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
The delectable baking competition that has grown into a beloved international phenomenon, returns for a fifth season this summer. Featuring the original cast of Mary Berry, Paul Hollywood, Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, this season has never before been seen in the U.S.
Once again, viewers will meet twelve of Britain’s best amateur bakers who will don their aprons, enter the iconic tent and tackle culinary trials that increase in difficulty as the competition unfolds. Vying to be crowned star baker, challengers prepare three creations in each episode: a signature bake, which tests their creative flair and baking ability; the devilishly difficult technical challenge, in which contestants have to bake creations using only ingredient lists and minimal instruction; and finally the showstopper, designed to fully showcase each baker’s skill and creativity. Contestants face the demanding but endearing judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, two icons of British baking who are now household names in America. Comedy duo Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc are the series hosts, providing the bakers with much-needed emotional support and comic relief. Offering viewers the perfect sweet summer escape, Season 5 features unforgettable contestants attempting some of the series most difficult challenges, from bagels to strudel, treacle tarts to choux gateaus. 3

Summer at last! Unlike past seasons, our Milwaukee PBS Presents programs will be new all year long. Look for new episodes of 10thirtysix™, Adelante!, Black Nouveau and The Arts Page this summer.
Adelante! sits down with artists Mauricio Ramirez, Milwaukee Downtown Wisconsin Avenue’s artist in residence. Ramirez has created murals across the country for Microsoft, vitaminwater and the City of Albuquerque. In Milwaukee he created mural installations on ten utility boxes along Wisconsin Avenue from Cass to 9th Streets as well as a mural of Frida Kalho for the Marcus Corporation’s Cine Latino. Black Nouveau gets up close and personal with entrepreneur Valerie Daniels, the discussion continues on the Kerner Commission Report 50 Years Later, and enjoy a profile of Wisconsinite Ariana Douglas, who recently appeared in the Florentine Opera’s production of The Magic Flute. The Arts Page showcases inspiring local arts. Ceramic sculptor Jef Raasch is inspired by nature for his “creature people”. The award-winning “Stitching History from the Holocaust” exhibit returns to the Jewish Museum Milwaukee featuring two new stories with local ties. Kohl’s Color Wheels uses artworks on display at the Milwaukee Art Museum as inspiration for creating art with kids of all ages. Around the Corner with John McGivern™ continues encore presentations of Season 7 giving viewers a chance to tune in again. John and the crew explore where people live, work and play this month in Brookfield-Elm Grove, Manitowoc, Caldonia-Windpoint, and Mequon-Thiensville. Outdoor Wisconsin heads to UW-Stevens Point to take in the 2017 Federal Duck Stamp competition. Emmy Fink travels to Door County to train with a dog sled team of rescued Huskies whose mission is to educate and save lives. And Host Dan Small joins Tari Costello’s Waupun High School natural resources class on a trapping field trip in Dodge County. Visit milwaukeepbs.org for full program details.

Rick delves deep into the Italian heartland — the place where la dolce vita is a way of life. In Umbria, he connects with rustic, traditional culture: sleeping at an agriturismo (a farmhouse inn), seeing how prosciutto and pecorino cheese are made (and eaten), and hiking down into ancient and fragrant wine cellars. Fishing for anchovies, sipping wine out of rustic barrels, bringing flowers to hilltop cemeteries, and savoring twinkling Mediterranean vistas, Rick visits his favorite stretch of Mediterranean coastline. From hill towns to harbors, and from vino rosso to Giotto, RICK STEVES’ HEART OF ITALY savors the good life in the Italian heartland. 6/9, noon, 10HD

The Great American Read Features Summer Events Television personality and journalist Meredith Vieira hosts the programs. The Great American Read kick-off special aired on Tuesday, May 22. Voting began with the kick-off special and continues throughout the summer, leading up to the grand finale in October 2018. Over the summer, viewers will be able to vote at pbs.org/greatamericanread and through hashtag voting via Facebook and Twitter using #GreatReadPBS. In the fall, viewers will also be able to cast their vote toll-free by phone and through SMS texting. Look for The Great American Read on milwaukeepbs. org for more details.
Do you like to read? Are you curious about why authors write what they write? If you are you will be interested in The Great American Read.
Milwaukee PBS, the Milwaukee Public Library, the
Boswell Book Company and Literacy Services invites viewers to examine the power, passion and joy of reading, with its multi-platform initiative, The Great American Read. The American public and a panel of literary experts selected 100 of their favorite books to take part in the first national vote to choose “America’s Best-Loved Book.” On June 21 join us for a Reading Picnic under the stars at the Washington Park Urban Ecology Center, 1859 N. 40th Street. The program starts at 7 pm. The group will discuss a Milwaukee author’s work of fiction and learn how it evolved. The event is free and open to the public. Tasty treats will be available to enjoy throughout the evening. Please RSVP at milwaukeepbs.org so we can save your spot.
The Great American Read televised series will resume in the fall with several themed episodes, including an exciting finale, culminating in the first-ever national vote to choose “America’s Best-Loved Book.” It will be the most expansive national celebration of books and reading aimed at engaging multi-generational readers across multiple platforms ever created. The top 100 book list is based on a public opinion poll, conducted by YouGov on behalf of PBS for The Great American Read that asked respondents to name their favorite novel. An advisory panel of book industry professionals compiled the results. Each author is represented only once, and series such as the “Alex Cross Mysteries” are included as one entry. The chosen books span five centuries, from “Don Quixote” (1603) to “Ghost” (2016). Authors from 15 different countries are represented, with genres ranging from beloved children’s classics such as “Charlotte’s Web” to modern best-sellers such as “Twilight.”
Designed to spark a national conversation about reading and the books that have inspired, moved and shaped us, The Great American Read includes an eight-part television series airing on Milwaukee PBS. 22

Krainz Foundation
We are pleased to welcome the Krainz Foundation as one of our newest underwriters on Milwaukee PBS. The Krainz Foundation is thrilled to be an underwriter of Milwaukee PBS’s Classic Gospel! It airs Sunday afternoons at 2 p.m. on Channel 10.1.The Krainz Foundation was founded by Wisconsin residents Robert and Katherine Krainz and Dale and the late Trudy Martin. The family foundation is administered by Dale Martin. Over the years, one of Dale and Trudy Martin’s happy memories was staying home on Saturday evenings to watch two of their favorite Milwaukee PBS programs, Classic Gospel and The Lawrence Welk Show. When Dale’s beloved wife Trudy passed away last year, Dale thought it most fitting to support Milwaukee PBS, whose programming brought much pleasure to Trudy and Dale during their marriage. He wanted to particularly support Classic Gospel, as watching it together was a particular joy of Trudy’s during her lifetime. In addition to supporting Milwaukee PBS, the Krainz Foundation’s charitable giving includes funding a food bank in Manatee County, Florida, and financial support to the Parkinson’s Association. The Krainz Foundation is also making a significant gift to the Greendale Veterans Memorial, enabling it to begin breaking ground this year. According to Dale Martin , “The Krainz Foundation supports Milwaukee PBS because it provides quality programming for the entire family, from children’s literacy shows like Sesame Street to adult programing such as Classic Gospel. “ Milwaukee PBS is deeply appreciative of the underwriting commitment of the Krainz Foundation. We thank them for their support! Maureen Bradley, Director, Corporate Development and Underwriting bradley1@matc.edu
